Separating beam-induced and cosmogenic muon backgrounds in the ICARUS detector

Due to high cosmic ray flux near the earth's surface, the rejection of cosmogenic muon backgrounds is a preeminent concern for particle detectors using Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) technology. One such detector, ICARUS of the short baseline neutrino experiment, also observes muons generated from neutrino interactions with nuclei in the surrounding rock. Our analysis exploits the differences between cosmogenic and rock-generated muons to separate rock-generated muons from the background. We develop a selection with 96.5\% efficiency and 81\% accuracy. Use of this selection on data and Monte-Carlo indicates monte-carlo may underestimate the true rock muon flux. These results have implications for calibration of the ICARUS detector and tuning of simulation.

Baryon Number Violation Searches in DUNE

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is an international project that will study neutrinos and search for phenomena predicted by theories Beyond the Standard Model (BSM). DUNE will use a 70-kton liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) located more than a kilometer underground. The bubble chamber like imaging capabilities of the LArTPC technology, in addition to the large size and underground location, allow the experiment to probe many types of rare processes. This poster will summarize DUNE’s sensitivity to the baryon number violating processes of nucleon decay with p→K^+ ν ̅ and n→n ̅ oscillations.

Exploring Dark Sector Physics in MicroBooNE with e+e- Final States

Neutrinos are the second most abundant massive particle in the universe, but because of their small mass and weak interactions with matter, they are still not well understood. Due to their pervasive nature and unique properties, neutrinos make great probes to explore fundamental questions about the universe such as what is the composition of dark matter? The MiniBooNE experiment, designed to study neutrino oscillations, detected what has become a longstanding anomaly – an excess of low energy electromagnetic events from accelerator neutrino interactions. A possible explanation of the anomaly comes from neutrino interactions with nuclei that create heavier, sterile neutrinos that will decay quickly into electron-positron pairs. Complementing this is the MicroBooNE experiment, a liquid argon time projection chamber, that can reconstruct events well in both two and three dimensions and can distinguish electrons from photons. This reconstruction ability enables us to select dark sector neutrino interactions from other possible interactions using machine learning techniques such as graph neural networks (GNNs) which is the primary focus of this project.

Measurement of ambient radon daughter decay rates and energy spectra in liquid argon using the MicroBooNE detector

We report measurements of radon daughters in liquid argon within the MicroBooNE time projection chamber (LArTPC). The presence of radon in MicroBooNE’s 85 metric tons of active liquid argon bulk is probed with newly developed charge-based low-energy reconstruction tools and analysis techniques to detect correlated 214 Bi- 214 Po radioactive decays. Special datasets taken during periods of active radon doping enable new demonstrations of the calorimetric capabilities of singlephase neutrino LArTPCs for β and α particles with electron-equivalent energies ranging from 0.1 to 3.0 MeV. By applying 214 Bi- 214 Po detection algorithms to beam-external physics data recorded over a 46-day period, no statistically significant presence of radon is detected, corresponding to a limit of < 0.38 mBq/kg at the 95% confidence level. The obtained radon radiopurity limit – the first ever reported for a noble element detector incorporating liquid-phase purification – is well below the target value of the future DUNE neutrino detector.

LBNF/DUNE Cryostats and Cryogenics Infrastructure for the DUNE Far Detector (Design Report)

DUNE is an international experiment dedicated to addressing some of the questions at the forefront of particle physics and astrophysics, including the mystifying preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early universe. The dual-site experiment will employ an intense neutrino beam focused on both a near detector and a cryogenic far detector. The DUNE far detector implements liquid argon time-projection chamber (LArTPC) technology, and combines many tens-of-kilotons of fiducial mass with sub-centimeter spatial resolution to collect neutrino events and image them with high precision. Given its size, this detector will be implemented as a set of up to four modules, each of which will require its own cryostat that will contain approximately 17.5 metric kilotons of ultra-pure liquid argon (LAr). The cryogenics infrastructure to support the detector modules includes systems to receive, transfer, store, purify, and maintain the LAr. This design report describes the cryostats and the cryogenics infrastructure required for the first two detector modules; this infrastructure is designed to support expansion to up to four far detector modules.

Xenon-Doped Liquid Argon TPCs as a Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay Platform

Next-generation large liquid argon time-projection chambers offer an unprecedented amount of active detector mass in a deep location. Modifications to the detector design could enable neutrinoless double beta decay searches, with the possibility of reaching the normal ordering region. These modifications include adding external neutron moderation, filling the detector with argon depleted in Ar42, doping with xenon, and a method to achieve percent-level energy resolution at the MeV scale. One way to achieve this desired level of energy resolution is to introduce a photosensitive dopant into the argon, converting the isotropic scintillation photons into a directional ionization signal. This would enhance the achievable energy resolution in large LArTPCs, and would lead to sizeable improvements to many facets of the broad physics program such a detector could offer.

Prototyping the Light Detection of the DUNE Near Detector

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment with a 70kt liquid argon time projection chamber (LAr TPC) at the Far Detector complex at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) and a Near Detector (ND) complex planned for the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The ND complex plans for three detector subsystems, including a modular LAr TPC comprised of 35 optically segregated modules. The modular detector design required the development a novel dielectric light readout, the ArCLight technology, which can be operated in a high voltage environment and has a large active surface. A demonstrator of four modular detectors, DUNE ND-LAr 2x2, will operate in 2023 in Fermilab's NuMI beam. After the construction of the modules was completed, they were successfully operated and commissioned in liquid argon using cosmic-ray muons at the University of Bern. This talk will discuss the designs of the light readout systems used in these modules with focus on the construction and commissioning of the ArCLights as well as the performance of the LRS during the tests at Bern.

Nuclear Physics of Compact Binaries with GADGET

The research goal of this project was to experimentally constrain the thermonuclear rate of the 15 O(α, Υ) 19 Ne reaction, whose uncertainty has a strong influence on the modeling of astrophysical Type-I X-ray bursts on accreting neutron stars. To this end, Experiment 21072 was run in November 2022 at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams using the GADGET II detection system. The limited scope and duration of this award included work in the year following the experiment: drafting a technical paper on the time projection chamber of the GADGET II detection system, and analysis of data from Experiment 21072. The award contributed to the education and development of the scientific and technical workforce by partially supporting one postdoctoral Research Associate who did this work.

Muon-Neutrino Charged-Current Cross Sections from MicroBooNE: First Simultaneous Measurements of Final States with and without Protons for Muon-Neutrino Scattering on Argon

A detailed understanding of muon neutrino charged-current interactions on argon is crucial to the study of neutrino oscillations in current and future experiments using liquid argon time projection chambers. To help fill this need, MicroBooNE has produced a comprehensive set of cross section measurements which simultaneously probe the leptonic and hadronic systems by dividing the inclusive channel into final states with and without protons. Data-driven model validation utilizing the conditional constraint formalism is employed to detect mismodeling that may bias the nominal flux averaged cross section results, which are extracted with the Wiener-SVD unfolding method. The results are compared to widely used event generator predictions revealing significant mismodeling of final states without protons, possibly due to insufficient treatment of final state interactions. These are first differential muon neutrino-argon cross section measurements made simultaneously for final states with and without protons and provide novel information that will help stimulate the improvement of event generator modeling.

TinyTPC - A Test Stand for Photosensitive Dopants

Liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs) are widely used to study accelerator neutrinos. Since LArTPCs are sensitive down to 10– 100 keV, neutrino experiments' physics programs could be extended to lower energies. However, in this scale, LArTPCs' energy resolution is significantly degraded because only charge is collected efficiently. One solution is the introduction of photosensitive dopants, which convert scintillation light to ionization yield. We have built a test stand (TinyTPC) with a LArPix pixelated anode plane and an active mass of 2.1 kg to study these charge enhancements. Our plan is to measure TinyTPC’s energy resolution with and without dopants using radioactive sources. This poster presentation will discuss TinyTPC's status and goals.

Enhancing Neutrino Event Simulation through Overlays at the ICARUS Experiment on the Short-Baseline Neutrino Program

In the pursuit of precise neutrino event simulation, the ICARUS experiment within the Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) program at Fermilab uses an overlay technique to closely align simulations with experimental data. This technique consists of taking signals from data from each of the each of the three subsystems (TPC, PMT, CRT) and overlaying a simulated neutrino interaction onto the event. The overlay procedure includes superimposing simulated waveforms from neutrino interactions from both Time Projection Chambers (TPC) and Photomultiplier Tubes (PMTs) onto their respective data counterparts. Furthermore, the Cosmic Ray Tagger (CRT) hits from both data and simulations are combined to form the overlay event. By combining signals in this manner, we can obtain a data-driven modeling of cosmic backgrounds as well as the detector response enabling a more precise handling of noise sources when using neutrino simulations.

Measurements of Pion and Muon Nuclear Capture at Rest on Argon in the LArIAT Test Beam Experiment

LArIAT is a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) experiment in a test beam at Fermilab from 2015 to 2017 to understand and characterize interactions of particles in LAr which are commonly observed in neutrino-Ar final-states. Tracks for pions and muons in LArTPCs are difficult to differentiate since both particles exhibit very similar ionization profiles for muon and pion that stop in the TPC. We are exploring unique new particle discrimination capabilities by exploiting information from small, isolated ionization depositions, referred to as "blips", reconstructed near the endpoint of stopping tracks. These blips are formed by gammas emitted when an at-rest pion or muon captures on the argon nucleus. The relatively low beam energy provided by LArIAT makes it uniquely suited for performing this demonstration. In this poster, we present an overview of event candidate selection, blip reconstruction, and background subtraction corresponding to our signal of interest, nuclear captures of pions and muons at rest inside LArIAT's TPC.

Search for a Long-Lived $\mu\mu$ Resonance in the NuMI Beam at ICARUS

The ICARUS detector in the Short-Baseline Neutrino program at Fermilab is sensitive to “long-lived” new physics particles that would be produced in the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam and decay inside the ICARUS liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC). We show results from a new analysis in ICARUS which searched for di-muon decays from a long-lived particle produced in kaon decay in the NuMI beam. The search is sensitive to new areas of parameter space for the Higgs portal scalar and an axion-like particle model. The sensitivity is also presented in a model-independent way applicable to any new physics model predicting the process $K \to \pi+S(\to\mu\mu)$, for a long-lived particle S. This is the first search for new physics performed with the ICARUS detector at Fermilab. It paves the way for the future program of long-lived particle searches at ICARUS.

Measurement of Differential Neutral Current Elastic $ν_μ$-Argon Scattering Cross Sections with MicroBooNE

The MicroBooNE experiment is an 85 ton active mass liquid-argon time projection chamber located in the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beamline. MicroBooNE’s ability to detect low-energy protons allows us to study single proton events with momenta as low as 300 MeV/c. We present a measurement of the flux-averaged neutral-current elastic differential cross section for neutrinos scattering on argon as functions of four-momentum transfer squared, Q 2 , proton kinetic energy, momentum and angle with respect to the beam direction. Our measured cross section as a function of Q 2 goes as low Q 2 = 0.10 GeV2 . This is our first step towards extracting the strange quark contribution to the axial form factor, which is not only the least-constrained contribution to the neutral-current elastic scattering cross section but is also crucial for understanding the strange quark contribution to the proton spin.

Progress Toward the First Search for Bound Neutron Oscillation into Antineutron in a Liquid Argon TPC

This note presents current progress for a neutron-antineutron oscillation ($n–\overline{n}$) search in MicroBooNE paving the way for the first search analysis of such process in a Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC). Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Boosted Decision Tree (BDT) algorithms were used to select signal $n–\overline{n}$ events over cosmogenic backgrounds. The CNN-only, BDT-only, and the combined (CNN+BDT) methods were demonstrated on the Monte-Carlo signal and background events. Validation of the CNNonly and the BDT-only methods was carried out on a small dataset of MicroBooNE Run1 off-beam data, setting the starting point toward further improvement of the analysis.

Status of ICARUS NUMI Interaction Cross-Section Analysis

The ICARUS experiment, utilizing Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr TPC) technology, has been installed at Fermilab in Chicago, Illinois, following its initial operation in Italy and subsequent refurbishment at CERN. ICARUS completed commissioning in June 2022. Currently, the experiment is in the phase of analyzing data from its two runs of physics data acquisition and gearing up for the third run. While its primary objective is to function as the far detector of the Short Baseline Neutrino program (SBN), seeking sterile neutrino signatures, ICARUS also offers diverse physics capabilities, including searches beyond the standard model and measurements of cross-sections. In addition to being exposed to the common Booster Neutrino (BNB) beamline, ICARUS also receives off-axis neutrinos from the Main Injector (NuMI) beam. Due to the off-axis angle between NuMI and ICARUS, coupled with contributions from both pion and kaon decays to neutrino fluxes, interactions of NuMI neutrinos within ICARUS can be detected over a range of several GeV in energy. These interactions present opportunities for crucial cross-section measurements and model tests within an energy range that overlaps both the SBN oscillation search and a portion of the DUNE spectrum. This poster presentation will delve into our efforts to conduct a muon-neutrino cross-section measurement, where the signal is defined by events with no pions produced in the final state of the interaction, along with some preliminary muon-neutrino inclusive measurements. Additionally, it will provide updates on the current status and future plans, including reconstruction, selection, and analysis procedures.
