Gate-defined wires in twisted bilayer graphene: From electrical detection of intervalley coherence to internally engineered Majorana modes

Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) realizes a highly tunable, strongly interacting system featuring superconductivity and various correlated insulating states. We establish gate-defined wires in TBG with proximity-induced spin-orbit coupling as (i) a tool for revealing the nature of correlated insulators and (ii) a platform for Majorana-based topological qubits. We show that the band structure of a gate-defined wire immersed in an intervalley coherent correlated insulator inherits electrically detectable fingerprints of symmetry breaking native to the latter. Surrounding the wire by a superconducting TBG region on one side and an intervalley coherent correlated insulator on the other further enables the formation of Majorana zero modes—possibly even at zero magnetic field depending on the precise symmetry-breaking order present. Our proposal not only introduces a highly gate-tunable topological qubit medium relying on internally generated proximity effects but can also shed light on the Cooper-pairing mechanism in TBG.

Magnetic Bloch theorem and reentrant flat bands in twisted bilayer graphene at 2 π flux

Bloch's theorem is the centerpiece of topological band theory, which itself has defined an era of quantum materials research. However, Bloch's theorem is broken by a perpendicular magnetic field, making it difficult to study topological systems in strong flux. For the first time, moiré materials have made this problem experimentally relevant, and its solution is the focus of this paper. We construct gauge-invariant irreps of the magnetic translation group at 2π flux on infinite boundary conditions, allowing us to give analytical expressions in terms of the Siegel theta function for the magnetic Bloch Hamiltonian, non-Abelian Wilson loop, and many-body form factors. We illustrate our formalism using a simple square lattice model and the Bistritzer-MacDonald Hamiltonian of twisted bilayer graphene, obtaining reentrant ground states at 2π flux under the Coulomb interaction.

Electric-field-tunable band gap in commensurate twisted bilayer graphene

Bernal bilayer graphene exhibits a band gap that is tunable through the infrared with an electric field. In this study, we show that sublattice odd commensurate twisted bilayer graphene (C-TBG) exhibits a band gap that is tunable through the terahertz with an electric field. We show that from the perspective of terahertz optics the sublattice odd and even forms of C-TBG are “inflated” versions of Bernal and AA-stacked bilayer graphene, respectively, with energy scales reduced by a factor of 110 for the 21.79° commensurate unit cell. This lower energy scale is accompanied by a correspondingly smaller gate voltage, which means that the strong-field regime is more easily accessible than in the Bernal case. Finally, we show that the interlayer coherence energy is a directly accessible experimental quantity through the position of a power-law divergence in the optical conductivity.

Weak-coupling theory of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Strong correlations occur in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) when the octet of flat moiré minibands centered on charge neutrality (CN) is partially occupied. The octet consists of a single valence band and a single conduction band for each of four degenerate spin-valley flavors. Motivated by the importance of Hartree electrostatic interactions in determining the filling-factor-dependent band structure, we use a time-dependent Hartree approximation to gain insight into electronic correlations. We find that the electronic compressibility is dominated by Hartree interactions, that paramagnetic states are stable over a range of density near CN, and that the dependence of energy on flavor polarization is strongly overestimated by mean-field theory. Nuclear suppression of coherent J / ψ photoproduction in heavy-ion ultraperipheral collisions and leading twist nuclear shadowing

We determine the nuclear suppression factor S Pb ( x ) , where x = M J / ψ 2 / W γ p 2 with M J / ψ the J / ψ mass and W γ p the photon-nucleon energy, for the cross section of coherent J / ψ photoproduction in heavy-ion ultraperipheral collisions at the Large Hadron Collider and Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider by performing the χ 2 fit to all available data on the cross section d σ A A → J / ψ A A / d y as a function of the J / ψ rapidity y and the photoproduction cross section σ γ A → J / ψ A ( W γ p ) as a function of W γ p . We find that while the d σ A A → J / ψ A A / d y data alone constrain S Pb ( x ) for x ≥ 10 − 3 , the combined d σ A A → J / ψ A A / d y and σ γ A → J / ψ A ( W γ p ) data allow us to determine S Pb ( x ) in the wide interval 10 − 5 < x < 0.05 . In particular, the data favor S Pb ( x ) , which decreases with a decrease of x in the 10 − 4 < x < 0.01 interval and can be both decreasing or constant for x < 10 − 4 . Identifying S Pb ( x ) with the ratio of the gluon distributions in Pb and the proton R g ( x , Q 0 2 ) = g A ( x , Q 0 2 ) / [ A g p ( x , Q 0 2 ) ] , we demonstrate that the leading twist approximation for nuclear shadowing provides a good description of all the data on d σ A A → J / ψ A A / d y and σ γ A → J / ψ A ( W γ p ) as well as on the experimental values for S Pb ( x ) derived from σ γ A → J / ψ A ( W γ p ) . We also show that modern nuclear parton distributions reasonably reproduce S Pb ( x ) as well. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Extraction of the higher-twist parton distribution $e(x)$ from CLAS data

We present the first point-by-point extraction of a twist-3 PDF. The scalar PDF, e(x), is accessed through the analysis of the data for the sin φR-moment of the beam-spin asymmetry for dihadron production in semi-inclusive DIS off proton target at CLAS and CLAS12. The dihadron formalism allows for use of collinear framework, hence calling for a minimal set of approximations and hypotheses. The extracted PDF e(x) carries insights into the physics of the largely-unexplored quark-gluon correlations, and its first Mellin moment is related to the marginally known scalar charge of the nucleon. We show that the proton flavor combination of the scalar PDF is nonzero at more than 74% probability.

Spatial imaging of proton via leading-twist nonskewed GPDs with basis light-front quantization

The internal image of the proton is unveiled by examining the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) at zero skewness, within the basis light-front quantized environment. Several distributions emerge when a quark is sampled with different currents depending upon the helicity arrangements of the active quark and the proton target. We investigate six of the eight leading-twist proton GPDs of the valence quarks, the helicity conserving distributions ( H , E , H ˜ ) and the helicity nonconserving ( H T , E T , H ˜ T ) distributions at skewness set to zero ( ζ = 0 ). We consider purely transverse momentum transfer and, hence, obtain results describe only the proton’s two-dimensional structure in the transverse plane. We present the Mellin moments of these distribution functions, where the first moment produces a form factor and the second Mellin moments help extract the information on partonic contributions to the hadronic angular momentum. We compare our results for the Mellin moments with those from lattice QCD and other approaches where available. We also present the GPDs in transverse position space. Nucleon axial and pseudoscalar form factors using twisted-mass fermion ensembles at the physical point

We compute the nucleon axial and pseudoscalar form factors using three N f = 2 + 1 + 1 twisted-mass fermion ensembles with all quark masses tuned to approximately their physical values. The values of the lattice spacings of these three physical point ensembles are 0.080, 0.068, and 0.057 fm and spatial sizes 5.1, 5.44, and 5.47 fm, respectively, yielding m π L > 3.6 . Convergence to the ground-state matrix elements is assessed using multistate fits. We study the momentum dependence of the three form factors and check the partially conserved axial-vector current (PCAC) hypothesis and the pion pole dominance (PPD). We show that in the continuum limit, the PCAC and PPD relations are satisfied. We also show that the Goldberger-Treimann relation is approximately fulfilled and determine the Goldberger-Treiman discrepancy. Our final results are g A = 1.245 ( 28 ) ( 14 ) for the nucleon axial charge, ⟨ r A 2 ⟩ = 0.339 ( 48 ) ( 06 ) fm 2 for the axial radius, g π N N ≡ lim Q 2 → − m π 2 G π N N ( Q 2 ) = 13.25 ( 67 ) ( 69 ) for the pion-nucleon coupling constant, and G P ( 0.88 m μ 2 ) ≡ g P * = 8.99 ( 39 ) ( 49 ) for the induced pseudoscalar form factor at the muon capture point. Consistency of the pion form factor and unpolarized transverse momentum dependent parton distributions beyond leading twist in the light-front quark model

We investigate the interplay among the pion’s form factor, transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMDs), and parton distribution functions (PDFs) extending our light-front quark model (LFQM) computation based on the Bakamjian-Thomas construction for the two-point function [1,2] to the three-point and four-point functions. Ensuring the four-momentum conservation at the meson-quark vertex from the Bakamjian-Thomas construction, the meson mass is taken consistently as the corresponding invariant meson mass both in the matrix element and the Lorentz factor in our LFQM computation. We achieve the current-component independence in the physical observables such as the pion form factor and delve into the derivation of unpolarized TMDs and PDFs associated with the forward matrix element. We address the challenges posed by twist-4 TMDs and exhibit the fulfillment of the sum rule. Effectively, our LFQM successfully handles the light-front zero modes and offers insights for broader three-point and four-point functions and related observables.

Mechanism for Anomalous Hall Ferromagnetism in Twisted Bilayer Graphene

Motivated by the recent observation of an anomalous Hall effect in twisted bilayer graphene, here we use a lowest Landau level model to understand the origin of the underlying symmetry-broken correlated state. This effective model is rooted in the occurrence of Chern bands which arise due to the coupling between the graphene device and its encapsulating substrate. Our model exhibits a phase transition from a spin-valley polarized insulator to a partial or fully valley unpolarized metal as the bandwidth is increased relative to the interaction strength, consistent with experimental observations. In sharp contrast to standard quantum Hall ferromagnetism, the Chern number structure of the flat bands precludes an instability to an intervalley coherent phase, but allows for an excitonic vortex lattice at large interaction anisotropy.

Topology-Bounded Superfluid Weight in Twisted Bilayer Graphene

While regular flat bands are good for enhancing the density of states and hence the gap, they are detrimental to the superfluid weight. We show that the predicted nontrivial topology of the two lowest flat bands of twisted bilayer graphene (TBLG) plays an important role in the enhancement of the superfluid weight and hence of superconductivity. We derive the superfluid weight (phase stiffness) of the TBLG superconducting flat bands with a uniform pairing, and show that it can be expressed as an integral of the Fubini-Study metric of the flat bands. This mirrors results already obtained for nonzero Chern number bands even though the TBLG flat bands have zero Chern number. We further show that the metric integral is lower bounded by the topological $C_{2z}T$ Wilson loop winding number of TBLG flat bands, which renders that the superfluid weight is also bounded by this topological index. In contrast, trivial flat bands have a zero superfluid weight. The superfluid weight is crucial in determining the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature of the superconductor. Based on the transition temperature measured in TBLG experiments, we estimate the topological contribution of the superfluid weight in TBLG.

Obstruction and Interference in Low-Energy Models for Twisted Bilayer Graphene

The electronic bands of twisted bilayer graphene (TBLG) with a large-period moiré superlattice fracture to form narrow Bloch minibands that are spectrally isolated by forbidden energy gaps from remote dispersive bands. When these gaps are sufficiently large, one can study a band-projected Hamiltonian that correctly represents the dynamics within the minibands. This inevitably introduces nontrivial geometrical constraints that arise from the assumed form of the projection. Here we show that this choice has a profound consequence in a low-energy experimentally observable signature that therefore can be used to tightly constrain the analytic form of the appropriate low-energy theory. Additionally, we find that this can be accomplished by a careful analysis of the electron density produced by backscattering of Bloch waves from an impurity potential localized on the moiré superlattice scale. We provide numerical estimates of the effect that can guide experimental work to clearly discriminate between competing models for the low-energy band structure.

Current-Induced Reversal of Anomalous Hall Conductance in Twisted Bilayer Graphene

It is observed experimentally that the sign of the Hall resistance can be flipped by a dc electric current in the twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) at 3/4 filling of the fourfold degenerate conduction flat bands. The experiment implies a switching of the valley polarization (VP) and topology in TBG. In this work, we present a theory on the current-induced switching of VP and topology. The presence of current in the bulk causes the redistribution of electron occupation in bands near the Fermi energy, which then deforms and shifts the band dispersion due to the Coulomb interaction. Above a critical current, the original occupied and empty bands can be swapped, resulting in the switching of VP and topology.

Charge-4e Superconductivity from Multicomponent Nematic Pairing: Application to Twisted Bilayer Graphene

We show that unconventional nematic superconductors with multicomponent order parameter in lattices with three- and sixfold rotational symmetries support a charge-4e vestigial superconducting phase above T c . The charge-4e state, which is a condensate of four-electron bound states that preserve the rotational symmetry of the lattice, is nearly degenerate with a competing vestigial nematic state, which is nonsuperconducting and breaks the rotational symmetry. This robust result is the consequence of a hidden discrete symmetry in the Ginzburg-Landau theory, which permutes quantities in the gauge sector and in the crystalline sector of the symmetry group. We argue that random strain generally favors the charge-4e state over the nematic phase, as it acts as a random mass to the former but as a random field to the latter. Furthermore, we propose that two-dimensional inhomogeneous systems displaying nematic superconductivity, such as twisted bilayer graphene, provide a promising platform to realize the elusive charge-4e superconducting phase.

Weak-Field Hall Resistivity and Spin-Valley Flavor Symmetry Breaking in Magic-Angle Twisted Bilayer Graphene

Near a magic twist angle, the lowest energy conduction and valence bands of bilayer graphene moiré superlattices become extremely narrow. The band dispersion that remains is sensitive to the moiré’s strain pattern, nonlocal tunneling between layers, and filling-factor-dependent Hartree and exchange band renormalizations. In this Letter, we analyze the influence of these band-structure details on the pattern of flavor symmetry breaking observed in this narrow band system and on the associated pattern of Fermi surface reconstructions revealed by weak-field Hall and Shubnikov–de Haas magnetotransport measurements.

Competing Zero-Field Chern Insulators in Superconducting Twisted Bilayer Graphene

The discovery of magic angle twisted bilayer graphene has unveiled a rich variety of superconducting, magnetic, and topologically nontrivial phases. Here, we show that the zero-field states at odd integer filling factors in h-BN nonaligned devices are consistent with symmetry broken Chern insulators, as is evidenced by the observation of the anomalous Hall effect near moiré cell filling factor ν = +1. The corresponding Chern insulator has a Chern number C = ±1 and a relatively high Curie temperature of T c ≈ 4.5 K. In a perpendicular magnetic field above B > 0.5 T we observe a transition of the ν = +1 Chern insulator from Chern number C = ±1 to C = 3, characterized by a quantized Hall plateau with R yx = h/3e 2 . These observations demonstrate that interaction-induced symmetry breaking leads to zero-field ground states that include almost degenerate and closely competing Chern insulators, and that states with larger Chern numbers couple most strongly to the B field. In addition, the device reveals strong superconducting phases with critical temperatures of up to T c ≈ 3.5 K. By providing the first demonstration of a system that allows gate-induced transitions between magnetic and superconducting phases, our observations mark a major milestone in the creation of a new generation of quantum electronics.

Cascades between Light and Heavy Fermions in the Normal State of Magic-Angle Twisted Bilayer Graphene

We present a framework for understanding the cascade transitions and the Landau level degeneracies of twisted bilayer graphene. The Coulomb interaction projected onto narrow bands causes the charged excitations at an integer filling to disperse, forming new bands. If the excitation moves the filling away from the charge neutrality point, then it has a band minimum at the moiré Brillouin zone center with a small mass that compares well with the experiment; if towards the charge neutrality point, then it has a much larger mass and a higher degeneracy. At a nonzero density away from an integer filling the excitations interact. The system on the small mass side has a large bandwidth and forms a Fermi liquid. On the large mass side the bandwidth is narrow, the compressibility is negative and the Fermi liquid is likely unstable. This explains the observed sawtooth features in compressibility, the Landau fans pointing away from charge neutrality and their degeneracies. The framework sets the stage for superconductivity at lower temperatures.

Observation of Reentrant Correlated Insulators and Interaction-Driven Fermi-Surface Reconstructions at One Magnetic Flux Quantum per Moiré Unit Cell in Magic-Angle Twisted Bilayer Graphene

The discovery of flat bands with nontrivial band topology in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) has provided a unique platform to study strongly correlated phenomena including superconductivity, correlated insulators, Chern insulators, and magnetism. A fundamental feature of the MATBG, so far unexplored, is its high magnetic field Hofstadter spectrum. Here, we report on a detailed magnetotransport study of a MATBG device in external magnetic fields of up to B = 3 1 T , corresponding to one magnetic flux quantum per moiré unit cell Φ 0 . At Φ 0 , we observe reentrant correlated insulators at a flat band filling factors of ν = + 2 and of ν = + 3 , and interaction-driven Fermi-surface reconstructions at other fillings, which are identified by new sets of Landau levels originating from these. These experimental observations are supplemented by theoretical work that predicts a new set of eight well-isolated flat bands at Φ 0 , of comparable band width, but with different topology than in zero field. Overall, our magnetotransport data reveal a qualitatively new Hofstadter spectrum in MATBG, which arises due to the strong electronic correlations in the reentrant flat bands.
