Spontaneous Nernst effect in the iron-based superconductor Fe 1+y Te 1–x Se x

We present a study of the Nernst effect in an iron-based superconductor with a nontrivial band topology Fe 1+y Te 1–x Se x . A nonzero Nernst signal is observed in a narrow temperature region around the superconducting transition temperature Tc at a zero field. This anomalous Nernst signal shows symmetric dependence on the external magnetic field and indicates an unconventional vortex contribution in an s-wave superconductor with a strong spin-orbit coupling, which is originated from the local magnetic moments of the interstitial Fe atoms. Furthermore, our experiments also provide the first evidence of a locally broken time-reversal symmetry in bulk Fe 1+y Te 1–x Se x single crystals.

Phenomenological model of the third-harmonic magnetic response due to superconducting fluctuations: Application to Sr 2 RuO 4

Here, we employ the phenomenological Lawrence-Doniach model to compute the contributions of the superconducting fluctuations to the third-harmonic magnetic response, denoted here by $\bar{M_3}$, which can be measured in a precise way using ac magnetic fields and lock-in techniques. We show that, in an intermediate temperature regime, this quantity behaves as the third-order nonlinear susceptibility, which shows a power-law dependence with the reduced temperature ε = $\frac{T-T_c}{T_c}$ as ε -5/2 . Very close to T c , however, $\bar{M_3}$ saturates due to the nonzero amplitude of the ac field. We compare our theoretical results with experimental data for three conventional superconductors—lead, niobium, and vanadium—and for the unconventional superconductor Sr 2 RuO 4 (SRO). We find good agreement between theory and experiment for the elemental superconductors, although the theoretical values for the critical field systematically deviate from the experimental ones. In the case of SRO, however, the phenomenological model completely fails to describe the data, as the third-harmonic response remains sizable over a much wider reduced temperature range compared to Pb, Nb, and V. We show that an inhomogeneous distribution of T c across the sample can partially account for this discrepancy, since regions with a locally higher T c contribute to the fluctuation $\bar{M_3}$ significantly more than regions with the “nominal” T c of the clean system. However, the exponential temperature dependence of $\bar{M_3}$ first reported by Pelc et al. [Nat. Commun. 10, 2729 (2019)] is not captured by the model with inhomogeneity. We conclude that, while inhomogeneity is an important ingredient to understand the superconducting fluctuations of SRO and other perovskite superconductors, additional effects may be at play, such as non-Gaussian fluctuations or rare-region effects.

Modeling Unconventional Superconductivity at the Crossover between Strong and Weak Electronic Interactions

High-temperature superconductivity emerges in many different quantum materials, often in regions of the phase diagram where the electronic kinetic energy is comparable to the electron-electron repulsion. Describing such intermediate-coupling regimes has proven challenging as standard perturbative approaches are inapplicable. In this study, we employ quantum Monte Carlo methods to solve a multiband Hubbard model that does not suffer from the sign problem and in which only repulsive interband interactions are present. In contrast to previous sign-problem-free studies, we treat magnetic, superconducting, and charge degrees of freedom on an equal footing. We find an antiferromagnetic dome accompanied by a metal-to-insulator crossover line in the intermediate-coupling regime, with a smaller superconducting dome appearing in the metallic region. Across the antiferromagnetic dome, the magnetic fluctuations change from overdamped in the metallic region to propagating in the insulating region. Our findings shed new light on the intertwining between superconductivity, magnetism, and charge correlations in quantum materials.

Chiral superconductivity with enhanced quantized Hall responses in moiré transition metal dichalcogenides

Experimental demonstrations of tunable correlation effects in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene have put two-dimensional moiré quantum materials at the forefront of condensed-matter research. Other twisted few-layer graphitic structures, boron-nitride, and homo- or hetero-stacks of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have further enriched the opportunities for analysis and utilization of correlations in these systems. Recent experiments within the latter material class confirmed the relevance of many-body interactions and demonstrated the importance of their extended range. Since the interaction, its range, and the filling can be tuned experimentally by twist angle, substrate engineering and gating, we here explore Fermi surface instabilities and resulting phases of matter of hetero-bilayer TMDs. Using an unbiased renormalization group approach, we establish in particular that hetero-bilayer TMDs are platforms to realize topological superconductivity with winding number |$\mathcal{N}$| = 4. We show that this state reflects in pronounced experimental signatures, such as distinct quantum Hall features.

Superconductivity in type-II Weyl-semimetal WTe 2 induced by a normal metal contact

WTe 2 is a material with rich topological properties: it is a 2D topological insulator as a monolayer and a Weyl-semimetal and higher-order topological insulator in a bulk form. Inducing superconductivity in topological materials is a way to obtain topological superconductivity, which lays at the foundation for many proposals of fault tolerant quantum computing. Here, we demonstrate the emergence of superconductivity at the interface between WTe 2 and the normal metal palladium. The superconductivity has a critical temperature of about 1.2 K. By studying the superconductivity in a perpendicular magnetic field, we obtain the coherence length and the London penetration depth. These parameters correspond to a low Fermi velocity and a high density of states at the Fermi level. This hints to a possible origin of superconductivity due to the formation of flatbands. Furthermore, the critical in-plane magnetic field exceeds the Pauli limit, suggesting a non-trivial nature of the superconducting state.

Two-Dimensional Uranyl Borates: From Conventional to Extreme Synthetic Conditions: Two-Dimensional Uranyl Borates: From Conventional to Extreme Synthetic Conditions

A systematic investigation of uranyl borates under different synthetic conditions resulted in five new 2D compounds, namely, (H 3 O)[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )], Li[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )] · (H 2 O), α-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ], β-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] and K 2.5 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 2.5 (OH) 1.5 ] · (H 2 O) 2.5 . (H 3 O)[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )] and Li[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )] · (H 2 O) were obtained from hydrothermal reactions at 220 °C using the same mineralizer. Both materials possess the uranophane sheet topology with different symmetry of the unit cells. In the structure of (H 3 O)[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )] and Li[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )] · (H 2 O), UO 7 pentagonal bipyramids share edges and vertexes with four BO 3 planar triangles. α-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] and β-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] are polytypes. α-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] was synthesized from a high-temperature solid-state reaction under ambient pressure; whereas β-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] was obtained from a high-temperature/high-pressure (HT/HP) reaction. Both structures have an identical anion topology, but β-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] crystallizes in space group with higher symmetry. In K 2.5 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 2.5 (OH) 1.5 ] · (H 2 O) 2.5 , which was obtained from a hydrothermal reaction, UO 7 polyhedra share vertexes and edges with two independent BO 3 triangles, forming the most complex uranyl borate layers among all five compounds. The different synthetic routes, novel topologies, thermal behavior and Raman spectra are discussed.

Melting of charge order in the low-temperature state of an electronic ferroelectric-like system

Strong electronic interactions can drive a system into a state with a symmetry breaking. Lattice frustration or competing interactions tend to prevent symmetry breaking, leading to quantum disordered phases. In spin systems frustration can produce a spin liquid state. Frustration of a charge degree of freedom also can result in various exotic states, however, experimental data on these effects is scarce. In this work we demonstrate how in a Mott insulator on a weakly anisotropic triangular lattice a charge ordered state melts on cooling down to low temperatures. Raman scattering spectroscopy finds that κ -(BEDT-TTF) 2 Hg(SCN) 2 Cl enters an insulating “dipole solid” state at T =30K, but below T =15K the order melts, while preserving the insulating energy gap. Based on these observations, we suggest a phase diagram relevant to other quantum paraelectric materials.

High-throughput screening for discovery of benchtop separations systems for selected rare earth elements

Abstract Rare earth (RE) elements (scandium, yttrium, and the lanthanides) are critical for their role in sustainable energy technologies. Problems with their supply chain have motivated research to improve separations methods to recycle these elements from end of life technology. Toward this goal, we report the synthesis and characterization of the ligand tris[(1-hydroxy-2-oxo-1,2-dihydropyridine-3-carboxamido)ethyl]amine, H 3 1·TFA (TFA = trifluoroacetic acid), and complexes 1·RE (RE = La, Nd, Dy). A high-throughput experimentation (HTE) screen was developed to quantitatively determine the precipitation of 1·RE as a function of pH as well as equivalents of H 3 1·TFA. This method rapidly determines optimal conditions for the separation of RE mixtures, while minimizing materials consumption. The HTE-predicted conditions are used to achieve the lab-scale separation of Nd/Dy ( SF Nd/Dy = 213 ± 34) and La/Nd ( SF La/Nd = 16.2 ± 0.2) mixtures in acidic aqueous media.

Two-magnon bound states in the Kitaev model in a [111] field

It is now well established that the Kitaev honeycomb model in a magnetic field along the [111] direction harbors an intermediate gapless quantum spin liquid (QSL) phase sandwiched between a gapped non-Abelian QSL at low fields $H < H_{c1}$ and a partially polarized phase at high fields $H > H_{c2}$. Here, we analyze the low-field and high-field phases and phase transitions in terms of single- and two-magnon excitations using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods. In this work, we find that the energy to create a bound state of two-magnon $Δ_p$ becomes lower than the energy to create a single spin flip $Δ_s$ near $H_{c2}$. In the entire Kitaev spin liquid, $Δ_p < Δ_s$ and both gaps vanish at $H_{c2}$. We make testable predictions for magnon pairing that could be observable in Raman scattering measurements on Kitaev QSL candidate materials.

First-principles coupled cluster theory of the electronic spectrum of transition metal dichalcogenides

The electronic properties of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) have attracted much attention during the last decade. Here we show how a diagrammatic ab initio coupled cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) treatment paired with a careful thermodynamic limit extrapolation in two dimensions can be used to obtain converged band gaps for monolayer materials in the MoS 2 family. We find CCSD gaps to lie in the upper range of the spread of $\textit{GW}$ approximation based on density functional theory (DFT) simulations, and also find slightly higher effective hole masses compared to previous reports. We also investigate the ability of CCSD to describe trion states, finding a reasonable qualitative structure, but poor excitation energies due to the lack of screening of three-particle excitations in the effective Hamiltonian. Our study provides an independent high-level benchmark of the role of many-body effects in 2D TMDs and showcases the potential strengths and weaknesses of diagrammatic coupled cluster approaches for realistic materials.

Spatially inhomogeneous magnetic superconductors

Here we consider a problem of superconductivity coexistence with the spin-density-wave order in disordered multiband metals. It is assumed that random variations of the disorder potential on short length scales render the interactions between electrons to become spatially correlated. As a consequence, both superconducting and magnetic order parameters become spatially inhomogeneous and are described by the universal phenomenological quantities, whereas all the microscopic details are encoded in the correlation function of the coupling strength fluctuations. We consider a minimal model with two nested two-dimensional Fermi surfaces and disorder potentials which include both intra- and interband scattering. The model is analyzed using the quasiclassical approach to show that short-scale pairing-potential disorder leads to a broadening of the coexistence region.

High critical field superconductivity at ambient pressure in MoB 2 stabilized in the P6/mmm structure via Nb substitution

Recently it was discovered that, under elevated pressures, MoB 2 exhibits superconductivity at a critical temperature T c as high as 32 K. The superconductivity appears to develop following a pressure-induced structural transition from the ambient pressure $\text{R}\bar{3}$⁢m structure to an MgB 2 -like P6/mmm structure. This suggests that remarkably high T c values among diborides are not restricted to MgB 2 as previously appeared to be the case, and that similarly high T c values may occur in other diborides if they can be coerced into the MgB 2 structure. In this paper, we show that density functional theory calculations indicate that phonon free energy stabilizes the P6/mmm structure over the $\text{R}\bar{3}$⁢m at high temperatures across the Nb 1–x ⁢Mo x B 2 series. X-ray diffraction confirms that the synthesized Nb-substituted MoB 2 adopts the MgB 2 crystal structure. Finally, high magnetic field electrical resistivity measurements and specific heat measurements demonstrate that Nb x ⁢Mo 1–x⁢ B 2 exhibits superconductivity with T c as high as 8 K and critical fields approaching 6 T.

Quantum quenches of an SO(5) pseudospin reveal Higgs bosons

A controlled dynamical probe measurement of complex order parameter fluctuations of a system may reveal its massive collective excitations. Here, we design dynamical quench protocols to excite independently all ten midgap Higgs bosons in the isotropic Balian-Werthamer state of a spinful p -wave superfluid or superconductor. The analysis is based on microscopic equations of motion of an SO(5) pseudospin, an extension of the usual Bloch equation to a five-dimensional space. Key to these protocols is the realization of quenches that break the rotational symmetry of the kinetic energy and exploit the irreducible representation of the angular momentum J = 2. For perturbative quenches, we find ( nondecaying ) periodic oscillations in time of these Higgs modes. Finally, we present experimental protocols for superconductors (superfluids), with the intention of unveiling the nature of their order parameters.
