Structural and Electronic Effect Driven Distortions in Visible Light Absorbing Polar Materials A Ta 2 V 2 O 11 ( A = Sr, Pb)

Complex vanadates of tantalum(V), such as ATa 2 V 2 O 11 (A = Sr, Pb), are rare and underrated materials, which have potential application domains that could be substantially expanded, mitigating the existing controversy on their atomic and electronic organization. Herein, we present a thorough structural examination combining synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction-aided distortion mode analysis with computational methods to study hettotypes of SrTa 2 V 2 O 11 (STVO) and PbTa 2 V 2 O 11 (PTVO). Being distinct from the perovskite family due to the presence of [VO 4 ] groups, both compounds are polar dielectric materials with certain similarities to SBT and PBT Aurivillius phases. Applying the model of anions of metallic matrices to the analysis of electron localization functions calculated on top of as-established equilibrium structures helps retrace the effects in the Sr and Pb surroundings on the respective crystal packings of STVO and PTVO.

Imaging Ferroelastic Domain Walls in Hybrid Improper Ferroelectric Sr 3 Sn 2 O 7

For this work, we combined synchrotron-based near field infrared spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy to image the properties of ferroelastic domain walls in Sr 3 Sn 2 O 7 . Although frequency shifts at the walls are near the limit of our sensitivity, we can confirm semiconducting rather than metallic character and widths between 20 and 60 nm. The latter is significantly narrower than in other hybrid improper ferroelectrics like Ca 3 Ti 2 O 7 . We attribute this trend to the softer lattice in Sr 3 Sn 2 O 7 , which may enable the octahedral tilt and rotation order parameters to evolve more quickly across the wall without significantly increased strain. These findings are crucial for the understanding of phononic properties at interfaces and the development of domain wall-based devices.

Unveiling the Degradation Mechanism of High-Temperature Superconductor Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ in Water-Bearing Environments

We report the physical properties of copper oxide high-temperature superconductors have been studied extensively, such as its band structure, and doping effects of Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ (Bi-2212). However, some chemical-related properties of these superconductors are rarely reported, such as their stability in air. Here, we report experiments combined with ab initio calculations that address the effects of water in contact with Bi-2212. The evolution of Bi-2212 flake with exposure to water for different time intervals were tested and characterized by optical microscopy (OM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electrical measurements. The thickness of Bi-2212 flakes is gradually decreased in water, and some thin flakes can be completely etched away after a few days. The stability of Bi-2212 in other solvents is also evaluated, including alcohol, acetone, HCl and KOH. The morphology of Bi-2212 flakes is relatively stable in organic solvents. However, the flakes are etched relatively quick in HCl and KOH, especially in acidic environment. Our results imply that hydrogen ion is primarily responsible for the deterioration of their properties. Both TEM and calculation results demonstrate that the atoms in Bi-O plane is relatively stable when compared to the inner atoms in Sr-O, Ca-O and Cu-O planes. This work contributes towards understanding the chemical stability of Bi-2212 superconducting device in environmental medium, which is important for both fundamental studies and practical applications of copper oxide high-temperature superconductors.

Double-Site Substitution of Ce into (Ba, Sr)MnO 3 Perovskites for Solar Thermochemical Hydrogen Production

Solar thermochemical hydrogen production (STCH) is a renewable alternative to hydrogen production using fossil fuels. While serial bulk experimental methods can accurately measure STCH performance, screening chemically complex materials systems for new promising candidates is more challenging. Here we identify double-site Ce-substituted (Ba,Sr)MnO 3 oxide perovskites as promising STCH candidates using a combination of bulk synthesis and high-throughput thin-film experiments. The Ce substitution on the B-site in 10H-BaMnO 3 and on the A-site in -SrMnO 3 leads to 2–3 times higher hydrogen production compared to CeO 2 , but these bulk single-site substituted perovskites suffer from incomplete reoxidation. Double-site Ce substitution on both A- and B-sites in (Ba,Sr)MnO 3 thin films increases Ce solubility and extends the stability of 10H and 3C structures, which is promising for their thermochemical reversibility. This study demonstrates a high-throughput experimental method for screening complex oxide materials for STCH applications.

Understanding (La,Sr)(Co,Fe)O$_{3-δ}$ Phase Instability within SOECs Using a Combined Experimental and Atomistic Modeling Approach

Understanding the onset of degradation in the air electrode within solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs), and the subsequent impact on cell performance, is a critical step in mitigating the performance losses and stability issues of SOECs. In an effort to identify early onset degradation phenomena, SOECs were characterized as fabricated and after testing potentiostatically at 1.3 V for 1000 h at 750 °C. SOEC air electrodes composed of a 1:1 composite of La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3–δ (6428-LSCF) and Gd 0.1 Ce 0.9 O 1.95 (GDC) were studied using synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (STEM-EDS), and X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) to evaluate the changes in the air electrode structurally and chemically. These techniques show the migration of Sr species from the air electrode through pores in the GDC barrier layer, progressing to the electrolyte boundary, where it accumulates and reacts with (Zr 0.84 Y 0.16 )O 2–δ (YSZ) to form SrZrO 3 . Microscopy results are paired with atomistic simulations to better understand the relationship between the thermodynamic instability of 6428-LSCF and cell fabrication/testing conditions. First-principles calculations reveal that LSCF-6428 is not stable during cell manufacturing and testing conditions, which supports the experimental identification of secondary phases in both as-fabricated and tested cells. Together, these results demonstrate that the challenging environments encountered by SOECs during cell manufacturing and operation lead to instabilities of the target 6428-LSCF anode material and underscore the need for more durable, high-performing SOEC components.

Toward tunable quantum transport and novel magnetic states in Eu 1– x Sr x Mn 1– z Sb 2 ( z < 0.05)

Magnetic semimetals are very promising for potential applications in novel spintronic devices. Nevertheless, realizing tunable topological states with magnetism in a controllable way is challenging. Here, we report novel magnetic states and the tunability of topological semimetallic states through the control of Eu spin reorientation in Eu 1–x Sr x Mn 1–z Sb 2 . Increasing the Sr concentration in this system induces a surprising reorientation of noncollinear Eu spins to the Mn moment direction and topological semimetallic behavior. The Eu spin reorientations to distinct collinear antiferromagnetic orders are also driven by the temperature/magnetic field and are coupled to the transport properties of the relativistic fermions generated by the 2D Sb layers. These results suggest that nonmagnetic element doping at the rare earth element site may be an effective strategy for generating topological electronic states and new magnetic states in layered compounds involving spatially separated rare earth and transition metal layers.

Elastocaloric determination of the phase diagram of Sr 2 RuO 4

One of the main developments in unconventional superconductivity in the past two decades has been the discovery that most unconventional superconductors form phase diagrams that also contain other strongly correlated states. Many systems of interest are therefore close to more than one instability, and tuning between the resultant ordered phases is the subject of intense research. In recent years, uniaxial pressure applied using piezoelectric-based devices has been shown to be a particularly versatile new method of tuning, leading to experiments that have advanced our understanding of the fascinating unconventional superconductor Sr 2 RuO 4 . Here we map out its phase diagram using high-precision measurements of the elastocaloric effect in what we believe to be the first such study including both the normal and the superconducting states. We observe a strong entropy quench on entering the superconducting state, in excellent agreement with a model calculation for pairing at the Van Hove point, and obtain a quantitative estimate of the entropy change associated with entry to a magnetic state that is observed in proximity to the superconductivity. The phase diagram is intriguing both for its similarity to those seen in other families of unconventional superconductors and for extra features unique, so far, to Sr 2 RuO 4 .

Linear-in-temperature resistivity for optimally superconducting (Nd,Sr)NiO 2

The occurrence of superconductivity in proximity to various strongly correlated phases of matter has drawn extensive focus on their normal state properties, to develop an understanding of the state from which superconductivity emerges. The recent finding of superconductivity in layered nickelates raises similar interests. However, transport measurements of doped infinite-layer nickelate thin films have been hampered by materials limitations of these metastable compounds: in particular, a high density of extended defects. Here, by moving to a substrate (LaAlO 3 ) 0.3 (Sr 2 TaAlO 6 ) 0.7 that better stabilizes the growth and reduction conditions, we can synthesize the doping series of Nd 1– x Sr x NiO 2 essentially free from extended defects. In their absence, the normal state resistivity shows a low-temperature upturn in the underdoped regime, linear behaviour near optimal doping and quadratic temperature dependence for overdoping. This is phenomenologically similar to the copper oxides despite key distinctions—namely, the absence of an insulating parent compound, multiband electronic structure and a Mott–Hubbard orbital alignment rather than the charge-transfer insulator of the copper oxides. In this study, we further observe an enhancement of superconductivity, both in terms of transition temperature and range of doping. These results indicate a convergence in the electronic properties of both superconducting families as the scale of disorder in the nickelates is reduced.

Giant electron–phonon coupling of the breathing plane oxygen phonons in the dynamic stripe phase of $\hbox {La}_{1.67}\hbox {Sr}_{0.33}\hbox {NiO}_4$

Doped antiferromagnets host a vast array of physical properties and learning how to control them is one of the biggest challenges of condensed matter physics. La 1.67 Sr 0.33 NiO 4 (LSNO) is a classic example of such a material. At low temperatures holes introduced via substitution of La by Sr segregate into lines to form boundaries between magnetically ordered domains in the form of stripes. The stripes become dynamic at high temperatures, but LSNO remains insulating presumably because an interplay between magnetic correlations and electron–phonon coupling localizes charge carriers. Magnetic degrees of freedom have been extensively investigated in this system, but phonons are almost completely unexplored. We searched for electron–phonon anomalies in LSNO by inelastic neutron scattering. Giant renormalization of plane Ni–O bond-stretching modes that modulate the volume around Ni appears on entering the dynamic charge stripe phase. Other phonons are a lot less sensitive to stripe melting. Dramatic overdamping of the breathing modes indicates that dynamic stripe phase may host small polarons. We argue that this feature sets electron–phonon coupling in nickelates apart from that in cuprates where breathing phonons are not overdamped and point out remarkable similarities with the colossal magnetoresistance manganites.

Forensic tracers of exposure to produced water in freshwater mussels: a preliminary assessment of Ba, Sr, and cyclic hydrocarbons

Hydraulic fracturing is often criticized due in part to the potential degradation of ground and surface water quality by high-salinity produced water generated during well stimulation and production. This preliminary study evaluated the response of the freshwater mussel, Elliptio complanata, after exposure to produced water. A limited number of adult mussels were grown over an 8-week period in tanks dosed with produced water collected from a hydraulically fractured well. The fatty tissue and carbonate shells were assessed for accumulation of both inorganic and organic pollutants. Ba, Sr, and cyclic hydrocarbons indicated the potential to accumulate in the soft tissue of freshwater mussels following exposure to diluted oil and gas produced water. Exposed mussels showed accumulation of Ba in the soft tissue several hundred times above background water concentrations and increased concentrations of Sr. Cyclic hydrocarbons were detected in dosed mussels and principle component analysis of gas chromatograph time-of-flight mass spectrometer results could be a novel tool to help identify areas where aquatic organisms are impacted by oil and gas produced water, but larger studies with greater replication are necessary to confirm these results.

Air separation via two-step solar thermochemical cycles based on SrFeO 3-δ and (Ba,La) 0.15 Sr 0.85 FeO 3-δ perovskite reduction/oxidation reactions to produce N 2 : rate limiting mechanism(s) determination

Two-step solar thermochemical cycles based on reversible reactions of SrFeO 3–δ and (Ba,La) 0.15 Sr 0.85 FeO 3–δ perovskites were considered for air separation. The cycle steps encompass (1) the thermal reduction of SrFeO 3–δ or (Ba,La) 0.15 Sr 0.85 FeO 3–δ perovskites driven by concentrated solar irradiation and (2) oxidation in air to remove O 2 and produce N 2 . Rate limiting mechanisms were examined for both reactions using a combination of isothermal and non-isothermal thermogravimetry for temperature-swings between 673 and 1373 K, heating rates of 10, 20, and 50 K min –1 , and O 2 pressure-swings between 20% O 2 /Ar and 100% Ar at atmospheric pressure. Evolved O 2 and associated lag due to transport behavior were measured with gas chromatography and used with measured sample temperatures to predict equilibrium compositions from a compound energy formalism thermodynamic model. Measured and predicted chemical equilibrium changes in deviation from stoichiometry were compared. Rapid chemical kinetics were observed as the samples equilibrated rapidly for all conditions, indicative that heat and mass transfer were the rate limiting mechanisms. Furthermore, the effects of bulk diffusion (or gas diffusion through the bed or pellet) were examined using pelletized and loose powdered samples and determined to have no discernable impact.

Electrospun porous La–Sr–Co–Ni–O nanofibers for highly sensitive non-enzymatic glucose detection

Glucose biosensors are widely used for clinical, industrial, and environmental applications. Nonenzymatic electrochemical glucose biosensors based on metal oxides with a perovskite structure have exhibited high sensitivity, excellent stability, and cost efficiency. In this work, porous La–Sr–Co–Ni–O (LSCNO) nanofibers, with an ABO 3 -type perovskite structure, were prepared through optimizing the A-site and B-site elements by electrospinning, followed with calcination at 700 °C for 5 h. Characterized by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, fabricated nanofibers were confirmed to be porous and nanosized polycrystalline grains with high crystallinity. A novel La 0.75 Sr 0.25 Co 0.5 Ni 0.5 O 3 -based nonenzymatic electrochemical biosensor was developed, which is sensitive to glucose because of an electrochemically catalytic mechanism, a mediated electron transfer involving Ni(II)/Ni(III) or Co(II)/Co(III), accompanying with gluconic acid complexation. The glucose biosensor presented a linear response in the range of 0.1–1.0 mM with a calibration sensitivity of 924 ± 28 μA mM –1 , a proportion of the variance of 0.9926, and a lower limit of detection of 0.083 mM, respectively, demonstrating an outstanding analytical performance. The biosensor showed no response to the most widely used anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate, and low sensitivity to other biomolecules, such as fructose, lactose, galactose, mannose, dopamine, and ascorbic acid. A urine sample was tested by this novel nonenzymatic electrochemical biosensor by standard addition method, suggesting a potential application for clinical test.

Re-entrance to a ferromagnetic insulator with oxygen-vacancy ordering in the La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 /SrTiO 3 superlattice

The charge-density wave is correlated with the properties in transition metal oxides, and regulating this state is important to explore the potential of oxides. Defects could modulate the local environment, in which the effect is subject to the concentration and arrangement, and an artificial arrangement of defect-ordering is highly expected to design the material properties. In this work, the ordering of oxygen vacancies with a preferred location on the (001) La/SrO plane by self-structural optimization was induced in La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 /SrTiO 3 superlattices with medium oxygen pressure during SrTiO 3 deposition, and then the ferromagnetic charge-ordering (CO)/charge-density-wave (CDW) state was formed in La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 with susceptibility to magnetic field, temperature, and superlattice configuration. In addition, re-entrance to the ferromagnetic insulator CO/CDW could be induced by a high magnetic field. The selective occupancy of oxygen vacancies on the (001) La/SrO plane and the phase fluctuation around the CO/CDW-to-ferromagnetic metal phase transition were critical to the above properties. The interfacial diffusion with atomic-level resolution to control oxygen vacancies could be used in other magnetoelectric systems and corresponding device applications.

Correlation between oxygen evolution reaction activity and surface compositional evolution in epitaxial La 0.5 Sr 0.5 Ni 1– x Fe x O 3– δ thin films

Water electrolysis can use renewable electricity to produce green hydrogen, a portable fuel and sustainable chemical precursor. Improving electrolyzer efficiency hinges on the activity of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst. Earth-abundant, ABO 3 -type perovskite oxides offer great compositional, structural, and electronic tunability, with previous studies showing compositional substitution can increase the OER activity drastically. However, the relationship between the tailored bulk composition and that of the surface, where OER occurs, remains unclear. Here, we study the effects of electrochemical cycling on the OER activity of La 0.5 Sr 0.5 Ni 1– x Fe x O 3– δ ( x = 0–0.5) epitaxial films grown by oxide molecular beam epitaxy as a model Sr-containing perovskite oxide. In this work, electrochemical testing and surface-sensitive spectroscopic analyses show Ni segregation, which is affected by electrochemical history, along with surface amorphization, coupled with changes in OER activity. Our findings highlight the importance of surface composition and electrochemical cycling conditions in understanding OER performance, suggesting common motifs of the active surface with high surface area systems.

Remote surface optical phonon scattering in ferroelectric Ba 0.6 Sr 0.4 TiO 3 gated graphene

We report the effect of remote surface optical (RSO) phonon scattering on carrier mobility in monolayer graphene gated by ferroelectric oxide. We fabricate monolayer graphene transistors back-gated by epitaxial (001) Ba 0.6 Sr 0.4 TiO 3 films, with field effect mobility up to 23 000 cm 2 V –1 s –1 achieved. Switching ferroelectric polarization induces nonvolatile modulation of resistance and quantum Hall effect in graphene at low temperatures. Ellipsometry spectroscopy studies reveal four pairs of optical phonon modes in Ba 0.6 Sr 0.4 TiO 3 , from which we extract RSO phonon frequencies. The temperature dependence of resistivity in graphene can be well accounted for by considering the scattering from the intrinsic longitudinal acoustic phonon and the RSO phonon, with the latter dominated by the mode at 35.8 meV. Furthermore, our study reveals the room temperature mobility limit of ferroelectric-gated graphene transistors imposed by RSO phonon scattering.

Fast lithium ion diffusion in brownmillerite Li x Sr 2 Co 2 O 5

Transition metal oxides not only exhibits novel magnetic properties but also provides outstanding ionic transports. Ionic conductors have great potential for interesting tunable physical properties via ionic liquid gating and novel energy storage applications such as all-solid-state lithium batteries. In particular, low migration barriers and high hopping attempt frequency are the keys to achieve fast ion diffusion in solids. Taking advantage of the oxygen-vacancy channel in Li x Sr 2 Co 2 O 5 , we show that migration barriers of lithium ion are as small as 0.28–0.17 eV depending on the lithium concentration rates. Our first-principles calculation also investigated hopping attempt frequency and concluded the room temperature ionic diffusivity and ion conductivity are high as 10 −7 –10 −6 cm 2 s −1 and 10 −3 –10 −2 Scm −1 , respectively, which outperform most of perovskite-type, garnet-type, and sulfide Li-ion solid-state electrolytes. This work proves Li x Sr 2 Co 2 O 5 as a promising super-ionic conductor.

Structural, magneto transport and magnetic properties of Ruddlesden–Popper La 2-2x Sr 1+2x Mn 2 O 7 (0.42≤x≤0.52) layered manganites

The magneto transport of Ruddlesden–Popper, La 2-2x Sr 1+2x Mn 2 O 7 (0.42≤x≤0.52), 2-dimensional bilayered manganites have been investigated in a broad temperature range. The samples have been synthesized using the solid-state reaction method. Rietveld refinement of the X-ray diffraction data indicates the tetragonal structure formation with I4/mmm space group. The resistivity curves of the samples present a general characteristic of metal-insulator (MI) transition at certain temperature (T MI ). Besides, for samples with x = 0.48, 0.50, and 0.52, at a certain temperature (T CO ) well below T MI the charge ordering is also evident. Furthermore, the samples display a shallow upturn in resistivity below T min due to the Kondo like spin scattering effect, weak localization and electron-phonon interaction. The high temperature semiconducting (T>T MI ) region, the resistivity curve follows the 3D Mott’s variable hopping transport mechanism. The overall suppression of resistivity accounts for a substantial magnetoresistance by applying a magnetic field and the characteristic change in T MI , T CO , and T min are discussed. Temperature-dependent magnetization demonstrates the suppression of ferromagnetism and evident of antiferromagnetic nature with an apparent charge ordering with increasing concentration of Sr 2+ .

Theory of the strange metal Sr 3 Ru 2 O 7

The bilayer perovskite Sr 3 Ru 2 O 7 has been widely studied as a canonical strange metal. It exhibits T -linear resistivity and a T log(1/ T ) electronic specific heat in a field-tuned quantum cr itical fan. Criticality is known to occur in “hot” Fermi pockets with a high density of states close to the Fermi energy. We show that while these hot pockets occupy a small fraction of the Brillouin zone, they are responsible for the anomalous transport and thermodynamics of the material. Specifically, a scattering process in which two electrons from the large, “cold” Fermi surfaces scatter into one hot and one cold electron renders the ostensibly noncritical cold fermions a marginal Fermi liquid. From this fact the transport and thermodynamic phase diagram is reproduced in detail. To conclude, we show that the same scattering mechanism into hot electrons that are instead localized near a 2D van Hove singularity explains theanomalous transport observed in strained Sr 2 RuO 4 .
