Self-assembly of a supramolecular spin-crossover tetrahedron

A new mononuclear iron(ii) SCO compound featuring H-bonding donor and acceptor units provides an entry to a purely supramolecular switchable {Fe 4 } tetrahedron that exhibits a singular magnetic behavior for each of the four Fe(ii) centers.

Spin-dependent charge transmission through chiral 2T3N self-assembled monolayer on Au

In this study, a gold surface is functionalized by chemisorption of the enantiopure N,N'-bis-[2,2';5',2"]tert-thiophene-5-yl methylcyclohexane-1,2-diamine (2T3N), a chiral oligothiophene derivative, via overnight incubation in a 2T3N ethanol solution. The Au|2T3N interface is characterized by x-ray photoelectron circular dichroism and comparing x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and electro-desorption results. Charge transmission at the Au|2T3N| solution interface is characterized by recording the cyclic voltammetry of the Fe(III)/Fe(II) reversible redox couple, finding a charge transfer rate constant, k°, variation from 1 × 10 -1 to 3.3 × 10 -2 cm s -1 , when comparing the bare Au and the Au|2T3N interfaces, respectively. The “anomalous” high value of k° found for the chiral Au|2T3N interface can be rationalized on the basis of the chiral-induced spin selectivity effect, as further proved by magnetic–conductive atomic force microscopy measurements at room temperature. A spin polarization of about 30% is found.

Self-assembled Ag(111) nanostructures induced by Fermi surface nesting

Scanning tunneling microscopy measurements on Ag(111)/MoS 2 reveal atomically flat preferred, or “magic,” heights occurring at 6, 10, and 14 atomic layers. We note these results are consistent with Ag growth on a variety of semiconducting substrates and correlate with electronic energy savings in electronic structure calculations of freestanding Ag(111) films. Thus, under certain conditions, Ag will spontaneously form quantized structures independent of the substrate. To explain this, we have found Fermi surface nesting vectors in the bulk Ag band structure which account for these results and the fact Ag that is gapped along the surface normal. This model extends to a range of metallic systems which exhibit electronic confinement, epitaxial growth, and minimal strain. As with Au/MoS 2 , the Ag/MoS 2 system exhibits this behavior at unusually high temperatures so that these principles might be used for control over device features at the nanometer scale under standard fabrication conditions.

Self-assembled complex micelle phase stability in ABA-type triblock copolymers and related core-shell bottlebrushes

We report the synthesis and temperature-dependent morphologies of a series of polylactide--poly (-decalactone)--polylactide (LDL) triblock copolymers with M n = 16.0 – 18.1 kg / mol and volume fractions f L = 0.27 – 0.31 and associated core-shell bottlebrush (csBB) polymers, which derive from enchaining LDL triblocks through a polymerizable midchain functionality. While the LDL triblocks form micellar Frank-Kasper A15 and phases due to the conformational asymmetry of this monomer pair, the csBB morphologies sensitively depend on the backbone degree of polymerization ( N bb ). At low N bb values, micellar Frank-Kasper phases with the brush backbone situated in the matrix domain are stable, albeit with a modest reduction in the mean interfacial curvature evidenced by a to A15 order-to-order transition. However, larger N bb values drive csBBs to form hexagonally packed cylinders phases. This N bb -dependent phase behavior is rationalized in terms of a star-to-bottlebrush transition. At low N bb values, the csBBs are akin to star polymers with pointlike junctions that can support complex micelle packings. As N bb increases, the csBBs adopt cylindrical molecular geometries with extended backbones situated in the matrix domain that prefer hexagonally packed cylinders morphologies.
