Cast segment evaluation

Evaluation program to determine feasibility of fabricating segmented rocket engine thrust chambers using low cost, lightweight castings extends state of the art in areas of casting size and complexity, and in ability to provide thin sections and narrow, deep, cooling channels. Related developments are discussed.

Aerodynamic characteristics of the Grumman H-33 orbiter mated to a three segment solid propellant booster

Experimental aerodynamic investigations were conducted on a .003366-scale model of the Grumman space shuttle configuration mounted to a three (3) segmented solid propellant booster. These tests were conducted in the MSFC 14-inch trisonic wind tunnel over a Mach number range of 0.6 to 4.96. The purpose of the test was to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of this configuration. Aerodynamic data was taken over a nominal angle of attack and angle of sideslip of -10 degrees to 10 degrees at zero degrees beta and alpha respectively. In addition, data was obtained for the H-33 orbiter alone to supplement data from TWT 502 and TWT 503.

Noise reductions achieved on a 720-023B aircraft using a two-segment approach

A flight investigation to determine the operational feasibility of two-segment approaches as a means for reducing airport community noise has been conducted. The effective perceived noise level (EPNL) associated with these approach profiles, using a 720-023B jet aircraft, has been obtained. The tests were designed to determine an operationally optimum approach profile and to quantify the reduction in noise level at predetermined locations on the ground beneath the flight track. The acoustic aspects of the test program are examined. An analysis of the optimum and reference profiles was made using a group of pilots. Information was also obtained on the types of pilot operational procedures used for the optimum profile.

Flight velocity influence on jet noise of conical ejector, annular plug and segmented suppressor nozzles

An F106 aircraft with a J85-13 engine was used for static and flight acoustic and aerodynamic tests of a conical ejector, an unsuppressed annular plug, and three segmented suppressor nozzles. Static 100 ft. arc data, corrected for influences other than jet noise, were extrapolated to a 300 ft. sideline for comparison to 300 ft. altitude flyover data at M = 0.4. Data at engine speeds of 80 to 100% (max dry) static and 88 to 100% flight are presented. Flight velocity influence on noise is shown on peak OASPL and PNL, PNL directivity, EPNL and chosen spectra. Peak OASPL and PNL plus EPNL suppression levels are included showing slightly lower flight than static peak PNL suppression but greater EPNL than peak PNL suppression. Aerodynamic performance was as anticipated and closely matched model work for the 32-spoke nozzle.

Serial segment method for measuring remnant

For tracking tasks where a sum of sine waves forcing function is used it is often difficult and/or expensive to obtain the pilot's remnant in the vicinity of the sine waves. For the case where each sine wave has at least four times an integer number of cycle per run length, this paper illustrates the serial segments method for measuring remnant power spectral density in a frequency band centered on each sine wave. This method can be implemented on digital, hybrid, or analog Fourier coefficient analyzers, and is particularly advantageous on the latter since properties of Fourier coefficients are exploited to yield both a remnant measure and an improved estimate of the correlated component.
