USAID Colombia Young Leaders Workforce Training Program Action Plans: Planning for Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure in Bogotá

As part of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)-National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Young Leaders Workforce Training Program in Colombia, the Grupo Energía Bogotá (GEB) participants leveraged their training and professional experience to develop an action plan for modeling and evaluating Bogotá's projected electric vehicle (EV) charging needs to meet future demand. This case study summarizes the collaboration between USAID-NREL, GEB, and the Bogotá Department of Transportation Mobility Secretariat (SDM) to estimate EV charging station needs to meet projected future EV sales in the city of Bogotá and determine high-priority locations within the greater Bogotá metropolitan area for planning and applying EVSE investment and installation.

Altered ß-cell Prohormone Processing and Secretion in Type 1 Diabetes

Analysis of data from clinical cohorts and more recently from human pancreatic tissue, indicate that defects in prohormone processing are an early and persistent component of type 1 diabetes pathogenesis. In this Perspectives article, we review the current state of knowledge of alterations in islet prohormone expression and processing in type 1 diabetes, and consider the clinical impact of these findings. Lingering questions, including pathologic etiologies and consequences of altered prohormone expression and secretion in type 1 diabetes, and the natural history of circulating prohormone production in health and disease are considered. Finally, key steps required to move forward in this area are outlined, including longitudinal testing of relevant clinical populations, studies that probe the genetics of altered prohormone processing, the need for combined functional and histologic testing of human pancreatic tissues, continued interrogation of the intersection between prohormone processing and autoimmunity, and optimal assays or approaches for analysis. Successful resolution of these questions may offer the potential to use altered prohormone processing as a pathogenic anchor that can be used to cluster different endotypes enveloping a large set of variables, and inform therapeutic strategies aimed at personalized intervention in the natural history of type 1 diabetes.

Assess The Water Resistance And Thermal Performance Of Pre-flashing Methods When Adding Continuous Insulation During Re-siding (AIRS)

Retrofitting existing buildings by adding continuous insulation during re-siding projects has become a popular method for enhancing energy efficiency, especially given the aging building stock and stricter energy codes. When properly integrated with existing window systems, continuous insulation can significantly improve thermal performance, but it also presents challenges related to water resistance and building envelope integrity. Research indicates that the interface between windows and wall assemblies is critical as improper installation or sealing can lead to water intrusion, materials deterioration, and energy loss. Moreover, studies show that fully integrating the windows with the insulation layer can reduce window heat loss by up to 40%, emphasizing the importance of optimizing window placement and sealing during retrofitting to ensure both energy efficiency and structural performance. In this study, we conducted experimental tests to evaluate the water penetration and thermal performance of two window types: an aluminum window with a 2-inch installation fin and a wood window, representing typical mid-20th century designs. Using the Heat, Air, and Humidity (HAM) chamber at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), we assessed bulk water penetration and performed COMSOL analysis for thermal flux and examined the effectiveness of different pre-flashing methods, i.e., standard self-adhered flashing tape and high-performance flashing tape with low-expansion foam, to enhance water resistance. The results indicate that applying proper flashing techniques and moisture management strategies can mitigate these risks, improving the overall performance and durability of retrofitted buildings. Additionally, proper sealing during retrofitting is essential, as improper installation can lead to moisture issues that compromise both energy efficiency and structural integrity.

Application of Machine Learning to Improve Biobased Glucaric Acid Production: Cooperative Research and Development Final Report, CRADA Number CRD-20-17260

The Agile Biofoundry (ABF) is a multi-national lab consortium funded by the DOE Bioenergy Technologies Office that has developed a biofoundry that enables the rapid deployment of bioproducts into the market. Working with four ABF laboratory members (National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR), Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), and Argonne National Laboratory (ANL)), Kalion will use advanced high throughput techniques, advanced analytics, and machine learning to optimize the production environment for glucaric acid. Low-cost, high-purity glucaric acid enables products in a wide range of fields to improve the chemical properties of products and applications ranging from water treatment, polymers & textiles, coatings, detergents, and pharmaceuticals. With its broad range of applications, glucaric acid has the potential to demonstrate how such bio-based materials offer great benefit to the US economy.

The 2030 National Charging Network: Estimating U.S. Light-Duty Demand for Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure; A Nationwide Assessment

Ambitious federal clean goals, along with historic investment in American manufacturing, have put the United States on track to see 30-42 million light-duty electric vehicles (EVs) on the road by 2030. Now, a groundbreaking study from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has estimated the EV charging infrastructure needed nationwide to support a sweeping transition to electrified transportation. The study, titled "The 2030 National Charging Network: Estimating U.S. Light-Duty Demand for Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure," estimates the number, type, and location of the chargers needed to create a comprehensive network of EV charging infrastructure. Its use of proprietary NREL software tools and sophisticated analysis have resulted in a nationwide infrastructure needs assessment with a never-before-seen level of detail - one that takes into account the different ways Americans travel, from running errands to taking road trips, and can adjust to changing circumstances as EV adoption rates change over time.
