Architecture and Performance of Perlmutter’s 35 PB ClusterStor E1000 All-Flash File System

NERSC's newest system, Perlmutter, features a 35 PB all-flash Lustre file system built on HPE Cray ClusterStor E1000. We present its architecture, early performance figures, and performance considerations unique to this architecture. We demonstrate the performance of E1000 OSSes through low-level Lustre tests that achieve over 90% of the theoretical bandwidth of the SSDs at the OST and LNet levels. We also show end-to-end performance for both traditional dimensions of I/O performance (peak bulk-synchronous bandwidth) and non-optimal workloads endemic to production computing (small, incoherent I/Os at random offsets) and compare them to NERSC's previous system, Cori, to illustrate that Perlmutter achieves the performance of a burst buffer and the resilience of a scratch file system. Finally, we discuss performance considerations unique to all-flash Lustre and present ways in which users and HPC facilities can adjust their I/O patterns and operations to make optimal use of such architectures.

Purification of legacy Ra-226 from ingrown Pb-210 using cation exchange chromatography

With the growing interest in using radium-226 (Ra-226) as a source material to produce essential radionuclides for targeted alpha therapies, the global demand for Ra-226 has surged, rendering its acquisition difficult. The shortage necessitates the exploration of alternative pathways to obtain this isotope beyond traditional commercial vendors. Legacy radium sources remain widespread due to Ra-226’s historical use but require the removal of ingrown daughter products to obtain a pure Ra-226 product. In conclusion, a straightforward and effective purification method for legacy Ra-226 ampoules has been developed using cation exchange chromatography, enabling the reliable conversion of legacy materials into high-purity Ra-226 solutions.

Potential for constraining sequence stratigraphy and cycle stratigraphy with U-Pb dating of carbonates

Studies of sequence stratigraphy and cycle stratigraphy in carbonate formations increasingly improve our understanding of depositional systems and basinal to global correlations. However, there is still a scarcity of dated sequences to determine the time length of sequences and cycles. Furthermore, the durations of sequences and cycles provide tests of the processes that produce them. Poor age resolution mostly stems from the lack of recognizable volcanic ash deposits in many sections. Through continuing advances in analytical techniques and approaches to sampling, the current state of Usingle bondPb dating of carbonate sedimentary rocks provides opportunities to fill in age gaps. The approach should build on well-constrained 3-dimensional stratigraphic architectures and diagenetic stratigraphies.

Measurement of prompt D + and ${D}_s^{+}$ production in p Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The production of prompt D + and $D^+_s$ mesons is studied in proton-lead collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{^{S}NN}$ = 5.02 TeV. The data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of (1.58 ± 0.02)nb –1 is collected by the LHCb experiment at the LHC. The differential production cross-sections are measured using D + and $D^+_s$ candidates with transverse momentum in the range of 0 < p T < 14 GeV/c and rapidities in the ranges of 1.5 < y* < 4.0 and –5.0 < y* < –2.5 in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass system. For both particles, the nuclear modification factor and the forward-backward production ratio are determined. These results are compared with theoretical models that include initial-state nuclear effects. In addition, measurements of the cross-section ratios between D + , $D^+_s$ and D 0 mesons are presented, providing a baseline for studying the charm hadronization in lead-lead collisions at LHC energies.

Nucleation and growth of PbSeO 3 , Pb 3 (CO 3 ) 2 (OH) 2 , and Se on the PbSe surfaces by decomposing PbSe in water

PbSe materials are widely researched and utilized in visible-infrared photodetectors, displays, transistors, thermoelectric devices, and photovoltaics. However, the instability of PbSe limits practical utilization. The decomposition mechanisms of PbSe needs to be clarified for guiding targeted design to improve its stability. Here, we studied the decomposition process of PbSe in water, which is exposed to air, by using ex-situ and semi in situ transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electron tomography reconstruction (ETR). We found that, besides water molecules, PbSe particles also react with O 2 and CO 2 that are adsorbed in water from air. Pd 3 (CO 3 ) 2 (OH) 2 , PbSeO 3 , and Se nucleate and grow on the surface of PbSe powders. This work provides understanding of the mechanism of materials nucleation, growth, and decomposition. Furthermore, the findings can be used as a reference to improve the stability and lifetime of PbSe devices.

PbI 2 Nanocrystal Growth by Atomic Layer Deposition from Pb(tmhd) 2 and HI

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) allows for fine control over the thickness, stoichiometry, and structural defects of materials. ALD provides a suitable route to deposit lead halides, which can further be converted to perovskites for photovoltaics, photoemission, and photodetection, among other applications. Deposition of lead halides by ALD has already begun to be explored; however, the precursors used in published processes are highly hazardous, require expensive fabrication processes, or contain impurities that can jeopardize the optoelectronic properties of metal halide perovskites after conversion. In this work, we deposited lead iodide (PbI 2 ) by a facile ALD process involving only two readily accessible and low-cost precursors. PbI 2 nanocrystals were grown on soda-lime glass (SLG), silicon dioxide support grids, and silicon wafer substrates and provided the groundwork for further investigation into developing lead halide perovskite processes by ALD. Further, the ALD-grown PbI 2 was characterized by annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (ADF-STEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), among other methods. This work presents the first step to synthesize lead halide perovskites with atomic control for applications such as interfacial layers in photovoltaics and for deposition in microcavities for lasing.
