Rapidity dependence of initial state geometry and momentum correlations in p + Pb collisions

Event geometry and initial state correlations have been invoked as possible explanations of long range azimuthal correlations observed in high multiplicity p+p and p+Pb collisions. We study the rapidity dependence of initial state momentum correlations and event-by-event geometry in √s = 5.02 TeV p+Pb collisions within the 3+1D IP-Glasma model [1], where the longitudinal structure is governed by JIMWLK rapidity evolution of the incoming nuclear gluon distributions. Furthermore, we find that the event geometry is correlated across large rapidity intervals whereas initial state momentum correlations are relatively short range in rapidity. Based on our results, we discuss implications for the relevance of both effects in explaining the origin of collective phenomena in small systems.

Observation of strangeness enhancement with charmed mesons in high-multiplicity p Pb collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV

The production of prompt D s + and D + mesons is measured by the LHCb experiment in proton-lead ( p Pb ) collisions in both the forward ( 1.5 < y * < 4.0 ) and backward ( − 5.0 < y * < − 2.5 ) rapidity regions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of s NN = 8.16 TeV . The nuclear modification factors of both D s + and D + mesons are determined as a function of transverse momentum, p T , and rapidity. In addition, the D s + to D + cross section ratio is measured as a function of the primary charged particle multiplicity in the event. An enhanced D s + to D + production in high-multiplicity events is observed for the whole measured p T range, in particular at low p T and backward rapidity, where the significance exceeds six standard deviations. This constitutes the first observation of strangeness enhancement in charm quark hadronization in high-multiplicity p Pb collisions. The results are also qualitatively consistent with the presence of quark coalescence as an additional charm quark hadronization mechanism in high-multiplicity proton-lead collisions. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Probing the Partonic Degrees of Freedom in High-Multiplicity p–Pb collisions at √ s NN = 5.02 TeV

We investigate the role of partonic degrees of freedom in high-multiplicity p–Pb collisions at √ s NN = 5.02 TeV carried out at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) by studying the production and collective flow of identified hadrons at intermediate p T via the coalescence of soft partons from the viscous hydrodynamics (VISH 2 + 1) and hard partons from the energy loss model, linear Boltzmann transport (LBT). We find that combining these intermediate p T hadrons with the low p T hadrons from the hydrodynamically expanding fluid and high p T hadrons from the fragmentation of quenched jets, the resulting hydro-dynamics-coalescence-fragmentation model provides a nice description of measured p T spectra and differential elliptic flow v 2 (p T ) of pions, kaons, and protons over the p T range from 0 to 6 GeV. We further demonstrate the necessity of including the quark coalescence contribution to reproduce the experimentally observed approximate number of constituent quark scaling of hadron v 2 at intermediate p T . Furthermore, our results thus indicate the importance of partonic degrees of freedom and also hint at the possible formation of quark-gluon plasma in high-multiplicity p–Pb collisions at the LHC.

Accurate Determination of the Neutron Skin Thickness of Pb 208 through Parity-Violation in Electron Scattering

We report a precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry A PV in the elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from 208 Pb. We measure A PV = 550 ± 16 (stat) ±8 (syst) parts per billion, leading to an extraction of the neutral weak form factor F W (Q 2 = 0.00616 GeV 2 ) = 0.368 ± 0.013. Combined with our previous measurement, the extracted neutron skin thickness is R n -R p = 0.283 ± 0.071 fm. The result also yields the first significant direct measurement of the interior weak density of 208 Pb: ρ$^0_W$ = -0.0796 ± 0.0036(exp) ± 0.0013(theo) fm -3 leading to the interior baryon density ρ$^0_b$ = 0.1480 ± 0.0036(exp) ± 0.0013(theo) fm -3 . Finally, the measurement accurately constrains the density dependence of the symmetry energy of nuclear matter near saturation density, with implications for the size and composition of neutron stars.

Fraction of χ c Decays in Prompt J / ψ Production Measured in p Pb Collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV

The fraction of χ c 1 and χ c 2 decays in the prompt J / ψ yield, F χ c → J / ψ = σ χ c → J / ψ / σ J / ψ , is measured by the LHCb detector in p Pb collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV . The study covers the forward ( 1.5 < y * < 4.0 ) and backward ( − 5.0 < y * < − 2.5 ) rapidity regions, where y * is the J / ψ rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass system. Forward and backward rapidity samples correspond to integrated luminosities of 13.6 ± 0.3 and 20.8 ± 0.5 nb − 1 , respectively. The result is presented as a function of the J / ψ transverse momentum p T , J / ψ in the range 1 < p T , J / ψ < 20 GeV / c . The F χ c → J / ψ fraction at forward rapidity is compatible with the LHCb measurement performed in p p collisions at s = 7 TeV , whereas the result at backward rapidity is 2.4 σ larger than in the forward region for 1 < p T , J / ψ < 3 GeV / c . The increase of F χ c → J / ψ at low p T , J / ψ at backward rapidity is compatible with the suppression of the ψ ( 2 S ) contribution to the prompt J / ψ yield. The lack of in-medium dissociation of χ c states observed in this study sets an upper limit of 180 MeV on the free energy available in these p Pb collisions to dissociate or inhibit charmonium state formation. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Growth and stability of Pb intercalated phases under graphene on SiC

Graphene intercalation is a novel way to control graphene's band structure and generate two-dimensional quantum materials with unusual spintronic and electronic properties. In spite of its importance, information about the intercalation mechanism is lacking, especially the role of low density domain boundaries between regions of graphene of different thickness. With high resolution surface diffraction we have systematically studied Pb intercalation on epi-graphene grown on SiC, with domain boundaries between buffer and single layer graphene. By examining the evolution of different diffraction spots as a function of tempertature, the location of Pb and stability of the intercalated phases underneath were determined.

Azimuthal correlations of prompt D mesons with charged particles in pp and p–Pb collisions at \({\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02\ \hbox {TeV}\)

The measurement of the azimuthal-correlation function of prompt D mesons with charged particles in pp collisions at \(\sqrt{s} =5.02\ \hbox {TeV}\) and p–Pb collisions at \(\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02\ \hbox {TeV}\) with the ALICE detector at the LHC is reported. The \(\mathrm{D}^{0}\) , \(\mathrm{D}^{+} \) , and \(\mathrm{D}^{*+} \) mesons, together with their charge conjugates, were reconstructed at midrapidity in the transverse momentum interval \(3< p_\mathrm{T} < 24\ \hbox {GeV}/c\) and correlated with charged particles having \(p_\mathrm{T} > 0.3\ \hbox {GeV}/c\) and pseudorapidity \(|\eta | < 0.8\) . The properties of the correlation peaks appearing in the near- and away-side regions (for \(\Delta \varphi \approx 0\) and \(\Delta \varphi \approx \pi \) , respectively) were extracted via a fit to the azimuthal correlation functions. The shape of the correlation functions and the near- and away-side peak features are found to be consistent in pp and p–Pb collisions, showing no modifications due to nuclear effects within uncertainties. The results are compared with predictions from Monte Carlo simulations performed with the PYTHIA, POWHEG+PYTHIA, HERWIG, and EPOS 3 event generators.

Multiplicity and rapidity dependence of $\textrm{K}^{*}(\mathrm {{\textbf {892}}})^{0}$ and $\mathrm {\phi ({\textbf {1020}})}$ production in p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} =$ 5.02 TeV

The transverse-momentum (p T ) spectra of K*(892) 0 and Φ(1020) measured with the ALICE detector up to p T = 16 GeV/c in the rapidity range -1.2 < y < 0.3, in p–Pb collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon collision $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV are presented as a function of charged particle multiplicity and rapidity. The measured p T distributions show a dependence on both multiplicity and rapidity at low p T whereas no significant dependence is observed at high p T . A rapidity dependence is observed in the p T -integrated yield (dN/dy), whereas the mean transverse momentum ($\langle$p T $\rangle$) shows a flat behavior as a function of rapidity. The rapidity asymmetry (Y asym ) at low p T (< 5 GeV/c) is more significant for higher multiplicity classes. At high p T , no significant rapidity asymmetry is observed in any of the multiplicity classes. Both K*(892) 0 and Φ(1020) show similar Y asym . The nuclear modification factor (Q CP ) as a function of p T shows a Cronin-like enhancement at intermediate p T , which is more prominent at higher rapidities (Pb-going direction) and in higher multiplicity classes. At high p T (> 5 GeV/c), the Q CP values are greater than unity and no significant rapidity dependence is observed.

Charm fragmentation fractions and $\mathbf {c\overline{c}}$ cross section in p–Pb collisions at $\mathbf {\sqrt{s _{NN}}=5.02 TeV}$

The total charm-quark production cross section per unit of rapidity dσ($\mathbf {c\overline{c}}$)/dy, and the fragmentation fractions of charm quarks to different charm-hadron species f(c → h c ), are measured for the first time in p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV at midrapidity (–0.96 < y < 0.04 in the centre-of-mass frame) using data collected by ALICE at the CERN LHC. The results are obtained based on all the available measurements of prompt production of ground-state charm-hadron species: D 0 , D + , D$^{+}_{s}$, and J/ψ mesons, and Λ$^{+}_{c}$ and $Ξ$$^{0}_{c}$ baryons. The resulting cross section is dσ($\mathbf {c\overline{c}}$)/dy = 219.6 ± 6.3 (stat.) $^{+10.5}_{–11.8}$ (syst.) $^{+8.3}_{–2.9}$ (extr.) ± 5.4 (BR) ± 4.6 (lumi.) ± 19.5 (rapidity shape) + 15.0 (Ω$^{0}_{c}$) mb, which is consistent with a binary scaling of pQCD calculations from pp collisions. The measured fragmentation fractions are compatible with those measured in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV, showing an increase in the relative production rates of charm baryons with respect to charm mesons in pp and p–Pb collisions compared with e + e – and e – p collisions. The p T -integrated nuclear modification factor of charm quarks, R pPb ($\mathbf {c\overline{c}}$) = 0.91 ± 0.04 (stat.) $^{+0.08}_{–0.09}$ (syst.) $^{+0.05}_{–0.03}$ (extr.) ± 0.03 (lumi.), is found to be consistent with unity and with theoretical predictions including nuclear modifications of the parton distribution functions.

Measurement of isolated prompt photon production in pp and p–Pb collisions at the LHC

This paper presents the measurement of the isolated prompt photon inclusive production cross section in pp and p–Pb collisions by the ALICE Collaboration at the LHC. The measurement is performed in p–Pb collisions at centre-of-mass energies per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 Te and 8.16 TeV, as well as in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV and 8 TeV. The cross section is obtained at midrapidity (|γ| < 0.7) using a charged-track based isolation momentum p$^{iso,~ch}_{T}$ < 1.5 GeV/c in a cone with radius R = 0.4. The data for both collision systems are well reproduced by perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations at next-to-leading order (NLO) using recent parton distribution functions for free (PDF) and bound (nPDF) nucleons. Furthermore, the nuclear modification factor R pA for both collision energies is consistent with unity for p T > 20 GeV/c. However, deviations from unity (R pA < 1) of up to 20% are observed for p T < 20 GeV/c with limited significance, indicating the possible presence of nuclear effects in the initial state of the collision.

$\overline{\Sigma }^{\pm }$ production in $\text {pp}$ and $\text {p}{-}\text{Pb}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV with ALICE

The transverse momentum spectra and integrated yields of anti-$Σ$ hyperons ($\overline{\Sigma}^{\pm}$) have been measured in and collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV with the ALICE experiment. Measurements are performed via the newly accessed decay channel $\overline{\Sigma}^{\pm}$ → $\bar{\textrm{n}}π^±$. A new method of antineutron reconstruction with the PHOS electromagnetic spectrometer is developed and applied to this analysis. The p T spectra of $\overline{\Sigma}^{\pm}$ are measured in the range 0.5 < p T < 3 GeV/c and compared to predictions of the PYTHIA 8, DPMJET, PHOJET, EPOS LHC and EPOS4 models. The EPOS LHC and EPOS4 models provide the best descriptions of the measured spectra both in pp and p-Pb collisions, while models which do not account for multiparton interactions provide a considerably worse description at high p T . The total yields of $\overline{\Sigma }^{\pm }$ in both pp and p-Pb collisions are compared to predictions of the Thermal-FIST model and dynamical models PYTHIA 8, DPMJET, PHOJET, EPOS LHC and EPOS4. All models reproduce the total yields in both colliding systems within uncertainties. The nuclear modification factors R pPb for both $\overline{\Sigma}^{+}$ and $\overline{\Sigma}^{-}$ are evaluated and compared to those of protons, $Λ$ and $Ξ$ hyperons, and predictions of EPOS LHC and EPOS4 models. No deviations of R pPb for $\overline{\Sigma}^{\pm}$ from the model predictions or measurements for other hadrons are found within uncertainties.

Substitution of Pb with (Li 1/2 Bi 1/2 ) in PbZrO 3 -based antiferroelectric ceramics

PbZrO 3 -based antiferroelectric (AFE) ceramics are promising dielectrics for high-energy-density capacitors due to their reversible phase transitions during charge–discharge cycles. In this work, a new composition series, [Pb 0.93–x La 0.02 (Li 1/2 Bi 1/2 ) x Sr 0.04 ][Zr 0.57 Sn 0.34 Ti 0.09 ]O 3 , with Li + and Bi 3+ substitution of Pb 2+ at x=0 , 0.04, 0.08, 0.12, 0.16 is investigated for the microstructure evolution, ferroelectric (FE) and dielectric properties. It is found that Li + and Bi 3+ substitution can significantly reduce the sintering temperature and simultaneously enhance the dielectric breakdown strength. An ultrahigh energy efficiency (94.0%) and a large energy density (3.22J/cm 3 ) are achieved in the composition of x = 0.12 with a low sintering temperature (1075°C).

Fast-Spectrum Critical Assemblies with a Pb-HEU Core Surrounded by a Copper Reflector

The Department of Energy invests tens of millions of dollars each year to develop the next generation of nuclear engineering modeling & simulation (M&S) tools. These M&S tools are used to analyze advanced reactor designs and the safety of current nuclear operations. As computers become more powerful, we are able to enhance resolution in our calculations. This improved resolution is taking us to a point where the limitations of simulation capability are in the quality of data, including our ability to quantify the uncertainty and sensitivity of the data. In order to accurately model systems of interest, the industry must improve key nuclear data measurements and our confidence of how well we understand the data. Thus, M&S tools need evaluated and quality-assured experimental data for validation purposes. The International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) compiles benchmark experiment data in a handbook that can be used by criticality safety engineers to validate computer codes and cross-section libraries at nuclear facilities. Both critical and subcritical experiments are included in the handbook. Figure 1 organizes all the benchmark evaluations that have been performed by the isotope of interest, in this case Pb, and the neutron energy within the system. Compared to other isotopes of interest for nuclear applications, there are few benchmark evaluations for Pb systems. This has caused the latest nuclear cross-section libraries to over/underestimate changes in the neutron population compared to experimental results. Therefore, this evaluation fills an important knowledge gap in benchmark evaluations.

Solubility Product of Vanadinite Pb 5 (VO 4 ) 3 Cl at 25 °C—A Comprehensive Approach to Incongruent Dissolution Modeling

Although vanadinite (Pb 5 (VO 4 ) 3 Cl occurs in abundance in various terrestrial geochemical systems of natural and anthropogenic origin and is seriously considered as a potential nuclear waste sequestering agent, its actual application is severely limited by a lack of understanding of its basic thermodynamic parameters. In this regard, the greatest challenge is posed by its incongruent dissolution, which is a pivotal hurdle for effective geochemical modeling. Our paper presents an universal approach for geochemical computing of systems undergoing incongruent dissolution which, along with unique, long-term experiments on vanadinites’ stability, allowed us to determine the mineral solubility constant. The dissolution experiments were carried out at pH = 3.5 for 12 years. Vanadinite has dissolved incongruently, continuously re-precipitating into chervetite (Pb 2 V 2 O 7 ) with the two minerals remaining in mutual equilibrium until termination of the experiments. The empirically derived solubility constant K sp,V,298 = 10 –91.89 ± 0.05 of vanadinite was determined for the first time. The proposed modeling method is versatile and can be adopted to other mineral systems undergoing incongruent dissolution.

Bismuth Subcarbonate Decorated Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposite for the Sensitive Stripping Voltammetry Analysis of Pb(II) and Cd(II) in Water

In this paper, bismuth subcarbonate (BiO)2CO3-reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite incorporated in Nafion matrix ((BiO)2CO3-rGO-Nafion) was synthesized and further applied, for the first time, in the sensitive detection of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). The as-synthesized nanocomposites were characterized by energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). (BiO)2CO3 composite plays a key role in the improvement of the detection sensitivity, which can form multicomponent alloy with cadmium and lead. Additionally, the unique structure of rGO can enlarge the surface area and provide abundant active sites. Moreover, Nafion incorporation in the nanocomposite can effectively increase the adhesion and mechanical strength of the film, and further improve the preconcetration ability due to the cation-exchange capacity of its abundant sulfonate groups. As expected, the (BiO)2CO3-rGO/Nafion nanocomposite-modified glassy carbon electrode ((BiO)2CO3-rGO-Nafion/GCE) achieved low detection limits of 0.24 μg/L for Pb(II) and 0.16 μg/L for Cd(II), in the linear range of 1.0–60 μg/L, and showed some excellent performance, such as high stability, good selectivity, and sensitivity. Finally, synthetic water samples were prepared and further used to verify the practicability of the (BiO)2CO3-rGO-Nafion/GCE with satisfactory results.

The Neutron Skin of 48 Ca and 208 Pb: A Critical Analysis

We discuss the neutron skins of 48 Ca and 208 Pb. We review and critically examine modern predictions and empirical constraints, with special attention to the different interpretations of the findings from the PREX-II experiment and the recently reported value of the neutron skin in 48 Ca extracted from the CREX experiment. We argue that, in the spirit of the ab initio philosophy, the path to understanding the behavior of dense neutron-rich matter must not circumvent fundamental nuclear forces. Based only on that argument, a thick neutron skin in 208 Pb is highly unlikely.

Some Pb and Sr isotopic measurements on eclogites from the Roberts Victor Mine, South Africa.

Five nodules of eclogite, one nodule of garnet peridotite, and one sample of kimberlite from the Roberts Victor Mine in the Orange Free State were analyzed for concentrations of U, Th, Pb, Rb, and Sr, and also isotopic compositions of Pb and Sr. Results are presented and analyzed. They indicate that the Roberts Victor eclogites have been contaminated by lead from the host rock of kimberlite. This finding suggests that stepwise extraction of lead may be a means of obtaining the isotopic composition of the primary lead in kimberlitic eclogites.

Epitaxy and fiber texture of Pb films on mica and glass.

We report the production of (111) epitaxial Pb films on mica and (111) textured Pb films on mica and glass. Film structure is studied by reflection electron diffraction and by etching and optical microscopy. Thin (about 1000 A) epitaxial films are found to be doubly positioned. Reorientation during growth of thicker films leads to single positioning in areas several tenths of a millimeter across.
