Abundancies of Ni, Cr, CO and major elements in the silicate portion of the Moon: Constraints from primary lunar magmas

The lunar volcanic glasses are samples of primary magnas derived by partial melting of the Moon mantle. The twenty-seven varieties of glass define three linear arrays having nearly constant Mg/Si ratios. The low-Ti magmas in each array approach the chondritic Ti/Al ratio. In addition, the Ca/Al ration in these low-Ti magmas trends toward the chrondritid value as one proceeds from array 1 through array 3. Using the chemistries of these primary magmas, as well as the assumption that the Moon possesses chondritic Ca/Al/Ti/Mg ratios, the silicate composition of the Moon has been estimated. The implications of these results are discussed.

The influence of hold times on LCF and FCG behavior in a P/M Ni-base superalloy

The relative importance of creep and environmental interactions in high temperature fatigue behavior has been investigated for as-HIP Rene 95. Strain-controlled low cycle fatigue and load-controlled fatigue crack growth tests were performed at elevated temperatures in argon, followed by fractographic analyses of the fracture surfaces by scanning electron microscopy. Fatigue lives were drastically reduced and crack growth rates increased one hundred fold as a result of superposition of hold times on continuous cycling. A change in fracture mode with hold time also was noted. Chromium oxide was detected on the fracture surface by Auger electron spectroscopy. The drastic changes in fatigue resistance due to hold times were attributed primarily to environmental interactions with fatigue processes.

XCN, X = Ag, Cu and Ni, a model for CN on a metal surface

The bonding between the CN radical and the metal atom is a highly polarized single sigma bond involving the coupling of the CN 5 sigma open shell orbital to the metal ns valence orbital. The bonding is very similar in all three systems and has very little d involvement. The derivative of the dipole moment with respect to R(CN) is found to be much smaller than for free CN, leading to a predicted decreased intensity of CN vibrational transitions for the chemisorbed species.

Undercooled and rapidly quenched Ni-Mo alloys

Hypoeutectic, eutectic, and hypereutectic nickel-molybdenum alloys were rapidly solidified by both bulk undercooling and melt spinning techniques. Alloys were undercooled in both electromagnetic levitation and differential thermal analysis equipment. The rate of recalescence depended upon the degree of initial undercooling and the nature (faceted or nonfaceted) of the primary nucleating phase. Alloy melts were observed to undercool more in the presence of primary Beta (NiMo intermetallic) phase than in gamma (fcc solid solution) phase. Melt spinning resulted in an extension of molybdenum solid solubility in gamma nickel, from 28 to 37.5 at % Mo. Although the microstructures observed by undercooling and melt spinning were similar the microsegregation pattern across the gamma dendries was different. The range of microstructures evolved was analyzed in terms of the nature of the primary phase to nucleate, its subsequent dendritic growth, coarsening and fragmentation, and final solidification of interfenderitic liquid.

The tensile and fatigue deformation structures in a single crystal Ni-base superalloy

Dislocation structures produced in Rene N4 crystals of various orientations deformed in tension and low cycle fatigue (LCF) at 760 and 980 degrees C were examined in order to elucidate the observed differences in stress-strain behavior. Specimens tensile tested at 760 degrees C displayed significant crystallographic orientation dependences in mechanical response but comparable inhomogeneous dislocation structures. LCF specimens of various orientations had comparable cyclic stress-strain curves and generally similar somewhat more homogeneous dislocation structures. Tensile specimens at the higher temperature had comparable mechanical response and corresponding similar quite homogeneous dislocation structures with gamma' faulting; and LCF specimens had orientation-dependent mechanical response but comparable homogeneous loose dislocation networks.

The nature of the bonding in XCO for X = Fe, Ni, and Cu

The bonding in the (5,3)Sigma - and 3Delta states of FeCO, the (3,1)Sigma + , 3Delta, and 3Pi states of NiCO, and the 2Sigma + state of CuCO are analyzed using the constrained-space orbital-variation (CSOV) technique for both (CASSCF) and SCF wave functions. The bonding is discussed in terms of sigma repulsion between the metals 4s and the CO 5-sigma and CO-to-metal sigma donation when there is an empty or partly occupied d-sigma orbital and metal-to-CO 2pi(asterisk) backdonation. The bonding is compared for the different metals and between the different states.

Effect of NASA advanced designs on thermal behavior of Ni-H2 cells

As part of an overall effort to advance the technology of nickel-hydrogen batteries for low Earth orbit (LEO) applications, advanced designs for individual pressure vessel (IPV) nickel-hydrogen cells have been conceived. These designs incorporate alternative methods of oxygen recombination which affect the thermal behavior of the cells. The effect of these oxygen recombination methods on the cell temperature profiles is examined.

Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS) orbiting profiles and Ni-Cd use

The Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS) is one of the more recently launched satellites of the Goddard Space Flight Center. The flight data of the two 50 Ah NASA standard batteries that are being flown on the ERBS are presented. Trend characteristics of the batteries were collected over a period of two years. The parameters that were trended are: the battery end-of-discharge voltage, time in peak power track, and time in constant current mode. All were plotted versus mission elapsed time. The slopes exhibited by the trended parameters indicate no adverse trends that would signify any appreciable degradation in the batteries.

On the cyclic stress-strain behaviour of a Ni-base superalloy at room temperature

The cyclic stress-strain behavior of Nimonic alloy PE16 was studied at room temperature and at different aging conditions to determine whether the plateau in the cyclic stress-strain curve (CSSC) reported by Arbuthnot (1982) is typical of the room temperature behavior and/or some specific initial microstructural states. Specimen blanks were heat-treated in batches in Ar/H2 (98/2) atmosphere to produce gamma-prime precipitates of different average sizes, but with the volume fraction of gamma-prime precipitates kept constant at about 7 percent at all the heat-treatment conditions. Total axial strain controlled LCF tests were conducted under fully reversed loading (R = -1) at a constant strain rate of 0.004/s, using a servohydraulic machine. The load response in tension and compression was recorded continually, and stress-strain hysteresis loops were recorded at frequent intervals. In the present investigation, the CSSCs of the P16 alloy at room temperature did not display the plateaus reported by Arbuthnot.

Directional solidification of Al-Ni/SiC composites during parabolic trajectories

Aluminum-6.1 wt. pct. nickel-silicon carbide composites containing varying volume fractions and particle sizes of SiC were directionally solidified at different translation rates and temperature gradients, under variable gravity levels. High-gravity, high-volume fractions of particles or high effective viscosity of liquid favored the engulfment of particles by the melt interface. Solidification under low gravity seemed to deflocculate the SiC particle agglomerates, while opposite results were obtained when solidifying under high gravity. Intercellular spacings were higher under low gravity solidfication.

The effect of composition and cooling rate on the structure of rapidly solidified (Fe, Ni)3Al-C alloy

The quench rate-metastable structure dependence in the Fe-20Ni-8Al-2C wt pct alloy has been experimentally studied. The nonequilibrium gamma-prime and gamma phases were noted in foils 65-100 microns thick, while at higher quench rates (thinner samples) the matrix was found to be in a disordered fcc gamma phase with kappa carbide precipitates. With the addition of silicon to the alloys, the nonequilibrium gamma-prime and gamma structures are observed at higher cooling rates.

The application of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy for characterizing the degradation of Ni(OH)2/NiOOH electrodes

Electrochemical impedance spectra of rolled and bonded and sintered porous nickel battery electrodes were recorded periodically during charge/discharge cycling in concentrated KOH solution at various temperatures. A transmission line model (TLM) was adopted to represent the impedance of the porous electrodes, and various model parameters were adjusted in a curve fitting routine to reproduce the experimental impedances. Degradation processes for rolled and bonded electrodes were deduced from changes in model parameters with electrode cycling time. In developing the TLM, impedance spectra of planar (non-porous) electrodes were used to represent the pore wall and backing plate interfacial impedances. These data were measured over a range of potentials and temperatures, and an equivalent circuit model was adopted to represent the planar electrode data. Cyclic voltammetry was used to study the characteristics of the oxygen evolution reaction on planar nickel electrodes during charging, since oxygen evolution can affect battery electrode charging efficiency and ultimately electrode cycle life if the overpotential for oxygen evolution is sufficiently low. Transmission line modeling results suggest that porous rolled and bonded nickel electrodes undergo restructuring during charge/discharge cycling prior to failure.
