MatLib-1.1: Nuclear Material Properties Library: Developed under NQA-1-2017

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) uses the computer code Fuel Analysis under Steady-state and Transients (FAST) to model steady-state and transient fuel behavior to support regulatory decisions. FAST relies on a material properties library (MatLib) that contains the thermal and mechanical properties of the nuclear materials and coolants of interest to support the US commercial nuclear industry. MatLib contains properties for a variety of nuclear fuels, cladding and other structural materials, gases, and coolants. In this document, material property correlations for the materials contained within MatLib are presented and discussed. When available, comparisons are made between the material property correlations and available data. Additionally, uncertainties are quantified on the material properties, which is then used by the NRC to support uncertainty quantification for best-estimate plus uncertainty safety evaluation reviews. This document describes MatLib-1.1, which was updated from MatLib-1.0 to include the addition of Lua functionality and code changes for integration with FAST. The results of MatLib did not change between MatLib-1.0 and MatLib-1.1; however, the source code changes warranted incrementing the minor numbering of the software version number. This document is one of a series of documents on FAST; the other documents detail the models used by FAST as well as its integral assessment to experiments and commercial data.

Yet Another NLA Library: T-LAPACK

In recent years, Randomized numerical linear algebra (RandNLA) proved to be more than a theoretical novelty: projects like RandLAPACK demonstrate its practical value across architectures, and projects like RandBLAS build trust in randomization as a tool for high-performance NLA. This BoF considers two main questions. First, what are the pressing issues in software standards and implementation that need to be resolved for RandNLA to become a core component of HPC? Second, how can we mobilize a community effort to make progress on these issues? The BoF will engage the audience to discuss the idea of growing the role of RandNLA in high-performance computing and what it would take to scale from niche prototypes to robust, production-quality software libraries.

HamLib: A library of Hamiltonians for benchmarking quantum algorithms and hardware

In order to characterize and benchmark computational hardware, software, and algorithms, it is essential to have many problem instances on-hand. This is no less true for quantum computation, where a large collection of real-world problem instances would allow for benchmarking studies that in turn help to improve both algorithms and hardware designs. To this end, here we present a large dataset of qubit-based quantum Hamiltonians. The dataset, called HamLib (for Hamiltonian Library), is freely available online and contains problem sizes ranging from 2 to 1000 qubits. HamLib includes problem instances of the Heisenberg model, Fermi-Hubbard model, Bose-Hubbard model, molecular electronic structure, molecular vibrational structure, MaxCut, Max- k -SAT, Max- k -Cut, QMaxCut, and the traveling salesperson problem. The goals of this effort are (a) to save researchers time by eliminating the need to prepare problem instances and map them to qubit representations, (b) to allow for more thorough tests of new algorithms and hardware, and (c) to allow for reproducibility and standardization across research studies.

Modeling of Induction Motors and Variable Speed Drives for Multi-Domain System Simulations Using Modelica and the OpenIPSL Library

This paper introduces an innovative method for characterizing, implementing, and validating both three-phase and single-phase induction motor models, accompanied by a variable speed drive model. The primary goal is to investigate interactions between the electrical power grid and other dynamic domains (e.g., thermofluidic) that impact motor/load drive behavior. Our approach involves establishing a mechanical interface based on a physically meaningful equation linking motor torque/speed to the electrical model in the phasor domain. This allows seamless integration of diverse domain subsystems into a unified multi-domain model using Modelica v4.0.0 and the OpenIPSL library v3.0.1, overcoming co-simulation limitations. The proposed model, which requires only one Modelica-compliant tool for simulation, introduces additional dynamics through the mechanical interface, enabling explicit simulation of load disturbances based on constitutive physics. This deepens our understanding of dynamic interactions between the electrical power domain and other subsystems connected through the motor. We detail the modeled components using mathematical equations and textual descriptions, emphasizing the Modelica modeling approach. Simulation examples validate the implementation, demonstrating the multi-domain modeling capabilities of the newly developed components.

Rapid Screening of Liquid Metal Wetting for a Materials Compatibility Library

Wetting behavior of molten metals on solid substrates is a critical phenomenon influencing numerous industrial applications, including welding, anti-corrosion coatings, and metal additive manufacturing (AM). In particular, molten metal jetting (MMJ), an emerging AM technology, requires that the molten metal remain pinned at the nozzle exit. Thus, each new metal requires a specific nozzle material to ensure consistent droplet ejection and deposition, making it important to rapidly identify the appropriate wetting combinations. However, traditional measurements of wetting angles require expensive equipment and only allow one combination of materials to be investigated at a time which can be time consuming. This work introduces a rapid screening method based on sessile droplet experiments to evaluate wetting profiles across multiple metal–substrate combinations simultaneously. This study investigates the wetting interactions of molten Al alloy (Al4008), Cu, and Sn on various ceramic and metal substrates to identify optimal material combinations for MMJ nozzle designs. Results demonstrate that Al4008 achieves wetting on ceramic substrates such as AlN, TiO 2 , and SiC, with varying mechanisms including chemical reactions and weak surface interactions. Additionally, theoretical predictions regarding miscibility gaps and melting point differences were verified for Cu and Sn on refractory metals like Mo and W. Findings from this study contribute to the establishment of a materials compatibility library, enabling the selection of wetting/non-wetting combinations for stable MMJ operation. This resource not only advances MMJ technologies but also provides valuable insights for broader applications such as welding, coating, and printed electronics.

Mechanism-Resolved PFM of Ferroionic and Ferroelectric Responses in Thickness-Gradient Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 Libraries

Resolving growth mechanisms and thickness evolution of functional properties is one of the key tasks in materials discovery and optimization involving thin-film materials, traditionally requiring significant experimental budgets. Here we introduce the combination of thickness-gradient libraries and automated scanning probe microscopy as a systematic pathway to elucidate growth modes and disentangle ferroelectric and electrochemical contributions in ferroelectric thin films. As a model system, we explore the Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 (HZO) gradient thin films grown on La x Sr 1-x MnO 3 (LSMO) bottom electrode thin films. Automated piezoresponse force microscopy, spectroscopy, and lithography reveals that irreversible topographic deformation arises from electrochemical activity at the LSMO surface, whereas reversible phase inversion in HZO reflects ferroelectric switching. Automated topography height-map scans are used to further quantify nucleation density, particle-size evolution, and roughness correlations across the thickness-gradient, demonstrating that improved plume stabilization during growth suppresses interfacial reactions and promotes dense, fine-grained HZO conducive to ferroelectric phase formation. This combined materials-engineering and automated-SPM framework establishes a platform for high-throughput, mechanism-resolved characterization of ferroionic and ferroelectric responses in complex oxide films.
