Key Strategies in Industry for Circular Economy: Analysis of Remanufacturing and Beneficial Reuse

Manufacturing, in the effort to be more sustainable, is increasingly focusing on energy efficiency and waste reduction. DOE's Better Buildings Better Plants Program has established Waste Reduction Network that works with 32 industrial partners to achieve higher material efficiency and reduce waste. United States generates 7.6 Billion Tons of industrial solid waste as estimated by EPA. In a linear economy as the economy grows, so does the waste – increasing strain on resources and the environment. The Circular Economy (CE) model keeps the available resources in circulation for longer period of time easing the burden on the environment.Remanufacturing and (Beneficial) reuse are widely accepted channels in 9R methodology and established pillars of CE. This chapter reviews the two key strategies and their adoption in different industrial sectors. It reviews the key barriers faced by manufacturers in implementing these methodologies and discusses the possible solutions to those barriers. The chapter also reviews impact of these CE strategies on sustainability, material efficiency and the economic and social benefits. Finally, this chapter presents two case studies from DOE's Better Plants partners – one on remanufacturing of components in heavy vehicles industry and one on beneficial reuse of spent foundry sand, a non-hazardous solid waste, and discusses the project impacts.

Twinning Enhances Efficiencies of Metallic Catalysts toward Electrolytic Water Splitting

Twinning is demonstrated to be an effective way of enhancing efficiencies of metallic catalysts toward electrolytic water splitting. Dendritic Cu possessing dense coherent nanotwin (NT) boundaries (NTCu-5nm) is successfully prepared with an organic-assisted electrodeposition at high pulse current densities. NT boundaries significantly improve electrocatalytic efficiencies and stability of NTCu-5nm over nanocrystalline Cu (NCCu), reducing overpotentials at 10 mA cm -2 for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) from 378 to 281 mV and from 235 to 88 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), with a small chronoamperometric decay of 5% after 100 h continuous overall water splitting at an ultrahigh initial current density of 500 mA cm -2 , largely outperforming the large chronoamperometric decay of 27% for only 1 h operation of the NCCu//NCCu couple. The defective twin boundaries enable formation of active Cu III O 2 - at low overpotentials, thus enhancing OER performance. Furthermore, the synergistic geometric and electronic effects induced by the twin boundaries result in shifts in Gibbs free energies of hydrogen adsorption (ΔG H ) toward the apex of a volcano plot of exchange current density versus ΔG H , leading to the remarkable improvement in HER activity.

Mixed‐Valence Cu I /Cu III Metal–Organic Frameworks with Non‐innocent Ligand for Multielectron Transfer

Abstract We report two novel three‐dimensional copper‐benzoquinoid metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), [Cu 4 L 3 ] n and [Cu 4 L 3 ⋅ Cu(iq) 3 ] n (LH 4 =1,4‐dicyano‐2,3,5,6‐tetrahydroxybenzene, iq=isoquinoline). Spectroscopic techniques and computational studies reveal the unprecedented mixed valency in MOFs, formal Cu(I)/Cu(III). This is the first time that formally Cu(III) species are witnessed in metal–organic extended solids. The coordination between the mixed‐valence metal and redox‐non‐innocent ligand L, which promotes through‐bond charge transfer between Cu metal sites, allows better metal‐ligand orbital overlap of the d‐π conjugation, leading to strong long‐range delocalization and semiconducting behavior. Our findings highlight the significance of the unique mixed valency between formal Cu(I) and highly‐covalent Cu(III), non‐innocent ligand, and pore environments of these bench stable Cu(III)‐containing frameworks on multielectron transfer and electrochemical properties.

Unveiling Highly Sensitive Active Site in Atomically Dispersed Gold Catalysts for Enhanced Ethanol Dehydrogenation

Developing a desirable ethanol dehydrogenation process necessitates a highly efficient and selective catalyst with low cost. Herein, we show that the “complex active site” consisting of atomically dispersed Au atoms with the neighboring oxygen vacancies (Vo) and undercoordinated cation on oxide supports can be prepared and display unique catalytic properties for ethanol dehydrogenation. The “complex active site” Au–Vo–Zr 3+ on Au 1 /ZrO 2 exhibits the highest H 2 production rate, with above 37,964 mol H 2 per mol Au per hour (385 g H 2 $\text{g}^{-1}_{\text{Au}} \text{h}^{–1}$) at 350 °C, which is 3.32, 2.94 and 15.0 times higher than Au 1 /CeO 2 , Au 1 /TiO 2 , and Au 1 /Al 2 O 3 , respectively. Combining experimental and theoretical studies, we demonstrate the structural sensitivity of these complex sites by assessing their selectivity and activity in ethanol dehydrogenation. Our study sheds new light on the design and development of cost-effective and highly efficient catalysts for ethanol dehydrogenation. Fundamentally, atomic-level catalyst design by colocalizing catalytically active metal atoms forming a structure-sensitive “complex site”, is a crucial way to advance from heterogeneous catalysis to molecular catalysis. Finally, our study advanced the understanding of the structure sensitivity of the active site in atomically dispersed catalysts.

Benzimidazolone-Dioxazine Pigments-Based Conjugated Polymers for Organic Field-Effect Transistor

Molecules based on benzimidazolone-dioxazine are known as blue/violet pigments and have been commercialized for decades. However, unfavorable solubility limits the application of these structures as building blocks of conjugated polymers despite their low band gaps. Herein, a series of donor–acceptor conjugated polymers containing soluble benzimidazolone-dioxazine structures as the acceptors and oligothiophene as donors are synthesized and investigated. With increasing numbers of thiophene rings, the steric hindrance diminishes and high molecular weight polymers can be achieved, leading to an improved performance in organic field effect transistor devices. The hole mobility of polymers with three to six thiophene units is in the order of 10 -1 cm2 V -1 s -1 . Among all the polymers, polymer P3 with three thiophene units between benzimidazolone-dioxazine structures shows the best hole mobility of 0.4 cm2 V -1 s -1 . Grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering results reveal that the high mobility of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) can be accredited by matched donor–acceptor packing in the solid thin films.

FAST discovery of an extremely radio-faint millisecond pulsar from the Fermi -LAT unassociated source 3FGL J0318.1+0252

High sensitivity radio searches of unassociated γ-ray sources have proven to be an effective way of finding new pulsars. Using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) during its commissioning phase, we have carried out a number of targeted deep searches of Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) γ-ray sources. On February 27, 2018 we discovered an isolated millisecond pulsar (MSP), PSR J0318+0253, coincident with the unassociated γ-ray source 3FGL J0318.1+0252. PSR J0318+0253 has a spin period of 5.19 ms, a dispersion measure (DM) of 26 pc cm –3 corresponding to a DM distance of about 1.3 kpc, and a period-averaged flux density of (~11±2) µJy at L-band (1.05–1.45 GHz). Among all high energy MSPs, PSR J0318+0253 is the faintest ever detected in radio bands, by a factor of at least ~4 in terms of L-band fluxes. With the aid of the radio ephemeris, an analysis of 9.6 years of Fermi-LAT data revealed that PSR J0318+0253 also displays strong γ-ray pulsations. Follow-up observations carried out by both Arecibo and FAST suggest a likely spectral turn-over around 350 MHz. This is the first result from the collaboration between FAST and the Fermi-LAT teams as well as the first confirmed new MSP discovery by FAST, raising hopes for the detection of many more MSPs. Finally, such discoveries will make a significant contribution to our understanding of the neutron star zoo while potentially contributing to the future detection of gravitational waves, via pulsar timing array (PTA) experiments.

New bipolar host materials for high power efficiency green thermally activated delayed fluorescence $\mathrm{OLEDs}$

We report four bipolar molecules, namely m-CzPym, p-CzPym, m-CzTrz, and p-CzTrz, with carbazole (Cz) donor and a benzonitrile-substituted pyrimidine (Pym) or triazine (Trz) acceptor core were synthesized and characterized. The electron deficiency of heteroaryl cores together with the substitution pattern of benzonitrile were employed to tune the energy levels as well as the thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) characteristics. The four molecules exhibited TADF behavior with inferior photoluminescent quantum yields (PLQYs) that limit their applications as emitters. These bipolar molecules were employed as TADF host materials for the benchmark TADF emitter 4CzIPN to achieve high-performing green TADF organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Among the molecules, m-CzPym-hosted TADF-OLEDs achieved a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE max ) of 31.5%, maximum power efficiency (PE max ) of 95.6 lm/W, and maximum current efficiency (CE max ) of 100.2 cd/A. Notably, p-CzPym-hosted TADF-OLEDs also achieved a PE max of 116.5 lm/W, turn-on voltage of 2.5 V, and impressive low efficiency roll-off performance (>89% of EQE max at 5000 cd/m 2 ), representing one of the highest efficiencies ever reported in 4CzIPN-doped devices. The high device efficiency can be ascribed to the balanced ambipolar carrier-transporting character of the host materials and high PLQY as well as the outstanding light outcoupling efficiency of the emitting layer.

Stabilizing high-Ni cathodes with gradient surface Ti-enrichment

High-Ni cathodes are being intensely pursued worldwide for electric vehicles and other energy-dense applications due to their high capacity and low cost. However, structural instabilities during electrochemical cycling and when subjected to thermal treatment have been the major issues hindering their practical deployment. We here report a rational design of coating-integrated-into-synthesis protocol for fabricating surface Ti-enriched LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (NMC811#Ti) material. The coating to intermediates is crucial to obtain high structural ordering, both in the bulk and surface of high-Ni cathodes, and the Ti substitute has a unique tri-valence (Ti 3+ ) in a gradient surface distribution. Further, the simulations of projected density of states in the atomistic understanding further certify significantly enhanced stability of lattice oxygen for the NMC811 through such a Ti 3+ -based structure reinforcement. Consequently, the NMC811#Ti cathode delivers a high capacity up to 200mAhg -1 at 0.1 C, along with superior stabilities during air-storage and thermal treatment (up to 297°C at the fully charged state under differential scanning calorimetric measurements). The corresponding NMC811#Ti||graphite full cell exhibits a desired 83.6% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 0.5 C in a voltage range of 2.8–4.3V. This work demonstrates a delicate surface reinforcement to stabilize high-Ni cathodes for long-life and safe lithium-ion batteries.

Three-dimensional feature matching improves coverage for single-cell proteomics based on ion mobility filtering

Single-cell proteomics (scProteomics) promises to advance our understanding of cell functions within complex biological systems. However, a major challenge of current methods is their inability to identify and provide accurate quantitative information for low abundance proteins. Herein, we describe an ion mobility-enhanced mass spectrometry acquisition and peptide identification method, TIFF (Transferring Identification based on FAIMS Filtering), to improve the sensitivity and accuracy of label-free scProteomics. TIFF extends the ion accumulation times for peptide ions by filtering out singly charged ions. The peptide identities are assigned by a three-dimensional MS1 feature matching approach (retention time, accurate mass, and FAIMS compensation voltage). TIFF method enabled unbiased proteome analysis to a depth of >1,700 proteins in single HeLa cells with >1,100 proteins consistently identified. As a demonstration, we applied the TIFF method to obtain temporal proteome profiles of >150 single murine macrophage cells during lipopolysaccharide stimulation and identified time-dependent proteome changes.

Dose Fractionation During Puberty Is More Detrimental to Mammary Gland Development Than an Equivalent Acute Dose of Radiation Exposure

Computed tomographic (CT) scans in adolescents have increased dramatically in recent years. However, the effects of cumulative low-dose exposures on the development of radiation sensitive organs, such as the mammary gland, is unknown. The purpose of this work was to define the effects of dose rate on mammary organ formation during puberty, an especially sensitive window in mammary development. We used a fractionated low-dose x-ray exposure to mimic multiple higher dose CT scans, and we hypothesized that fractionated exposure would have less of an effect on the number of mammary gland defects compared with an acute exposure.

Unveiling mesoscopic structures in distorted lamellar phases through deep learning-based small angle neutron scattering analysis

Hypothesis: The formation of distorted lamellar phases, distinguished by their arrangement of crumpled, stacked layers, is frequently accompanied by the disruption of long-range order, leading to the formation of interconnected network structures commonly observed in the sponge phase. Nevertheless, traditional scattering functions grounded in deterministic modeling fall short of fully representing these intricate structural characteristics. Our hypothesis posits that a deep learning method, in conjunction with the generalized leveled wave approach used for describing structural features of distorted lamellar phases, can quantitatively unveil the inherent spatial correlations within these phases. Experiments and Simulations: This report outlines a novel strategy that integrates convolutional neural networks and variational autoencoders, supported by stochastically generated density fluctuations, into a regression analysis framework for extracting structural features of distorted lamellar phases from small angle neutron scattering data. To evaluate the efficacy of our proposed approach, we conducted computational accuracy assessments and applied it to the analysis of experimentally measured small angle neutron scattering spectra of AOT surfactant solutions, a frequently studied lamellar system. Findings: The findings unambiguously demonstrate that deep learning provides a dependable and quantitative approach for investigating the morphology of wide variations of distorted lamellar phases. It is adaptable for deciphering structures from the lamellar to sponge phase including intermediate structures exhibiting fused topological features. In conclusion, this research highlights the effectiveness of deep learning methods in tackling complex issues in the field of soft matter structural analysis and beyond.
