Design of Star‐Shaped Trimer Acceptors for High‐Performance (Efficiency > 19%), Photostable, and Mechanically Robust Organic Solar Cells

Abstract High power conversion efficiency (PCE), long‐term stability, and mechanical robustness are prerequisites for the commercial applications of organic solar cells (OSCs). In this study, a new star‐shaped trimer acceptor (TYT‐S) is developed and high‐performance OSCs with a PCE of 19.0%, high photo‐stability (t 80% lifetime = 2600 h under 1‐sun illumination), and mechanical robustness with a crack‐onset strain (COS) of 21.6% are achieved. The isotropic molecular structure of TYT‐S affords efficient multi‐directional charge transport and high electron mobility. Furthermore, its amorphous structure prevents the formation of brittle crystal‐to‐crystal interfaces, significantly enhancing the mechanical properties of the OSC. As a result, the TYT‐S‐based OSCs demonstrate a significantly higher PCE (19.0%) and stretchability (COS = 21.6%) than the linear‐shaped trimer acceptor (TYT‐L)‐based OSCs (PCE = 17.5% and COS = 6.4%) and the small‐molecule acceptor (MYT)‐based OSCs (PCE = 16.5% and COS = 1.3%). In addition, the increased molecular size of TYT‐S, relative to that of MYT and dimer (DYT), suppresses the diffusion kinetics of the acceptor molecules, substantially improving the photostability of the OSCs. Finally, to effectively demonstrate the potential of TYT‐S, intrinsically stretchable (IS)‐OSCs are constructed. The TYT‐S‐based IS‐OSCs exhibit high device stretchability (strain at PCE 80% = 31%) and PCE of 14.4%.

Additive‐Free Oxidized Spiro‐MeOTAD Hole Transport Layer Significantly Improves Thermal Solar Cell Stability

Perovskite solar cells are among the most promising new solar technologies, already surpassing polycrystalline silicon solar cell efficiencies. The stability of the highest efficiency devices at elevated temperature is, however, poor. These cells typically use Spiro-MeOTAD as the hole transporting layer. It is generally believed that additives, required for enhancing electrical conductivity and optimizing energy level alignment, are responsible for the reduced stability—inferring that Spiro-MeOTAD based hole transporting layers are intrinsically unstable. Here, a reliable noble metal free synthesis of Spiro-MeOTAD (bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide) 4 is presented which is used as the oxidizing agent. No additives are added to the partially oxidized Spiro-MeOTAD hole-transporting layer. Device efficiencies up to 24.2% are achieved. Electrical conductivity is largely developed by the first 1% oxidation. Further oxidation shifts the energy levels away from the vacuum level, which allows tuning of the energy level alignment without the use of additives—contradicting the current understanding of this system. Without additives, devices demonstrate significant improvement in stability at elevated temperatures up to 85 °C under one sun over 1400 h continuous illumination. The remaining degradation is pinpointed to ion migration and reactions in the perovskite layer which may be further suppressed with compositional engineering and adequate ion barrier layers.

Data‐Driven Insights into Rare Earth Mineralization: Machine Learning Applications Using Functional Material Synthesis Data

Understanding rare‐earth element (REE) mineralization mechanisms is essential for developing efficient separation strategies. Although the geochemical pathways that generate REE deposits are qualitatively known, quantitative links between specific conditions and mineralization outcomes remain limited. Herein, the repurpose laboratory REE hydrothermal synthesis data—originally collected for functional‐materials fabrication—as a surrogate for studying mineralization with data‐driven methods. The compiled 1,200+ hydrothermal reaction records and trained three machine‐learning models—K‐nearest neighbors (KNN), random forest (RF), and extreme gradient boosting (XGB)—to predict product elements and phases from precursors, additives, reaction conditions, and engineered features. Validation shows XGB achieves the highest accuracy. Feature importance indicates thermodynamic properties of cations and anions dominate model decisions. Correlations reveal positive relationships among precursor concentration, reaction time, pH, and temperature, consistent with classical crystallization behavior. XGB‐based regressors are built to predict crystallization temperature and pH from precursor/product attributes. Performance is strongest when similar training examples exist, while accuracy declines for underrepresented reactions, notably REE carbonates and heavy‐REE systems. Overall, the study shows that functional‐materials datasets can illuminate REE mineralization and provide priors for exploration and processing. Expanding datasets with less‐studied chemistries and conditions will improve generality and support deposit discovery and more efficient REE recovery.

2‐Aminobenzenethiol‐Functionalized Silver‐Decorated Nanoporous Silicon Photoelectrodes for Selective CO 2 Reduction

Abstract A molecularly thin layer of 2‐aminobenzenethiol (2‐ABT) was adsorbed onto nanoporous p‐type silicon (b‐Si) photocathodes decorated with Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs). The addition of 2‐ABT alters the balance of the CO 2 reduction and hydrogen evolution reactions, resulting in more selective and efficient reduction of CO 2 to CO. The 2‐ABT adsorbate layer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and modeled by density functional theory calculations. Ex situ X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of the 2‐ABT modified electrodes suggests that surface Ag atoms are in the +1 oxidation state and coordinated to 2‐ABT via Ag−S bonds. Under visible light illumination, the onset potential for CO 2 reduction was −50 mV vs. RHE, an anodic shift of about 150 mV relative to a sample without 2‐ABT. The adsorption of 2‐ABT lowers the overpotentials for both CO 2 reduction and hydrogen evolution. A comparison of electrodes functionalized with different aromatic thiols and amines suggests that the primary role of the thiol group in 2‐ABT is to anchor the NH 2 group near the Ag surface, where it serves to bind CO 2 and also to assist in proton transfer.

Anthraquinone Redox Relay for Dye‐Sensitized Photo‐electrochemical H 2 O 2 Production

Abstract Anthraquinone (AQ) redox mediators are introduced to metal‐free organic dye sensitized photo‐electrochemical cells (DSPECs) for the generation of H 2 O 2 . Instead of directly reducing O 2 to produce H 2 O 2 , visible‐light‐driven AQ reduction occurs in the DSPEC and the following autooxidation with O 2 allows H 2 O 2 accumulation and AQ regeneration. In an aqueous electrolyte, under 1 sun conditions, a water‐soluble AQ salt is employed with the highest photocurrent of up to 0.4 mA cm −2 and near‐quantitative faradaic efficiency for producing H 2 O 2 . In a non‐aqueous electrolyte, under 1 sun illumination, an organic‐soluble AQ is applied and the photocurrent reaches 1.8 mA cm −2 with faradaic efficiency up to 95 % for H 2 O 2 production. This AQ‐relay DSPEC exhibits the highest photocurrent so far in non‐aqueous electrolytes for H 2 O 2 production and excellent acid stability in aqueous electrolytes, thus providing a practical and efficient strategy for visible‐light‐driven H 2 O 2 production.

Herein, we investigate the NIR‐to‐UV/visible emission of sub‐15 nm alkaline‐earth rare‐earth fluoride UCNPs (M 1− x Ln x F 2+ x , MLnF) with a CaF 2 shell. We synthesize 8 alkaline‐earth host materials doped with Yb 3+ and Tm 3+ , with alkaline‐earth (M) spanning Ca, Sr, and Ba, MgSr, CaSr, CaBa, SrBa, and CaSrBa. We explore UCNP composition, size, and lanthanide doping‐dependent emission, focusing on upconversion quantum yield (UCQY) and UV emission. UCQY values of 2.46 % at 250 W cm −2 are achieved with 14.5 nm SrLuF@CaF 2 particles, with 7.3 % of total emission in the UV. Two‐Dimensional Polycyclic Photovoltaic Molecule with Low Trap Density for High‐Performance Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract Typical organic semiconductors show a high trap density of states (10 16 –10 18 cm −3 ), providing a large number of centers for charge‐carrier recombination, thus hindering the development of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Here, we design and synthesize a two‐dimensional polycyclic photovoltaic material, named as TPP, to reduce the trap density to as low as 2.3×10 15 cm −3 , which is 1–3 orders of magnitude lower than those of typical organic semiconductors. Moreover, TPP exhibits a broad and strong absorption, ordered molecular packing with a large crystalline coherence length and enhanced electron mobility. Then, the bulk heterojunction nanoparticles (BHJ‐NPs) based on a blend of polymer donor (PM6) and TPP exhibit an average hydrogen evolution rate (HER) of 64.31 mmol h −1 g −1 under AM1.5G sunlight (100 mW cm −2 ), and 72.75 mmol h −1 g −1 under 330–1100 nm illumination (198 mW cm −2 ) higher than that of the control NPs based on typical PM6 : Y6 (62.67 mmol h −1 g −1 ).

Enhancing Oxygen Reduction Activity of Pt-based Electrocatalysts: From Theoretical Mechanisms to Practical Methods

Pt-based electrocatalysts are considered as one of the most promising choices to facilitate the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and the key factor enabling their success is to reduce the required amount of platinum. Herein, we focus on illuminating both the theoretical mechanisms which enable enhanced and sustained ORR activity and the practical methods to achieve them in catalysts. The various multi-step pathways of ORR are firstly reviewed and the rate-determining steps based on the reaction intermediates and their binding energies are analyzed. We then explain the critical aspects of Pt-based electrocatalysts to tune oxygen reduction properties from the viewpoints of active sites exposure and altering the surface electronic structure, and further summarize representative research progress towards practically achieving these activity enhancements with a focus on platinum size reduction, shape control and core Pt elimination methods. Finally, we outline the remaining challenges and provide our perspectives with regard to further enhancing their activities.

Facile, Versatile and Stepwise Synthesis of High‐Performance Oligomer Acceptors for Stable Organic Solar Cells

Abstract Oligomer acceptors have recently emerged as promising photovoltaic materials for achieving high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and long‐term stability in organic solar cells (OSCs). However, the limited availability of diverse acceptors, resulting from the sole synthetic approach, has hindered their potential for future industrialization. In this study, we present a facile and effective stepwise approach that utilizes two consecutive Stille coupling reactions for the synthesis of oligomer acceptors. To demonstrate the feasibility of the novel approach, we successfully synthesize a trimer acceptor, Tri‐Y6‐OD, and further systematically investigate the impact of oligomerization on device performance and stability. The results reveal that this approach has significant advantages compared to the conventional method, including reduced formation of unwanted by‐products and lower difficulties in purification. Remarkably, the OSC based on PM6 : Tri‐Y6‐OD achieves an impressive PCE of 18.03 % and maintains 80 % of the initial PCE (T 80 ) for 1523 h under illumination, surpassing the performance of the corresponding small molecule acceptor Y6‐OD‐based device. Furthermore, the versatility of the synthetic strategy in obtaining diverse acceptors is further demonstrated. Overall, our findings provide a facile, versatile and stepwise way for synthesizing oligomer acceptors, thereby facilitating the development of stable and efficient OSCs.

Probing Photoelectrochemical Hydrogen and Oxygen Evolution at Individual Al:SrTiO 3 /Rh 2–y Cr y O 3 Photocatalyst Particles

Particle-based photocatalysts for overall water splitting convert solar energy into hydrogen fuel without the use of any photovoltaic devices. As such they have the potential to revolutionize renewable energy production on Earth. While proven efficiencies have reached 1.1%, further improvements of photocatalyst technology depend on a better understanding of energy loss mechanisms on the individual particle level. Here, we conduct the first in operando photoelectrochemical measurements on individual micrometer-sized Al-doped SrTiO 3 /Rh 2–y CryO 3 photocatalyst particles. We find that the photocatalyst particles behave mainly as water oxidation photoanodes reaching up to 0.5 mA cm −2 at 0.8 V versus RHE and a photovoltage of ∼1.00 V under 4.7 mW cm −2 ultraviolet illumination. This proves that charge separation in the unbiased Al:SrTiO 3 /Rh 2–y Cr y O 3 catalyst is driven by a junction at the n-semiconductor-liquid contact. While O 2 is detected symmetrically around photocatalyst particles, uneven H 2 evolution profiles reflect an irregular Rh 2–y Cr y O 3 cocatalyst distribution. Additionally, the H 2 evolution activity varies significantly between different photocatalyst particles. Furthermore, this suggests that performance gains are possible by better controlling catalyst composition on the microscale.

Two Artificial Leaf Architectures for Solar Formate Production From CO 2 and H 2 O

Sunlight-powered artificial leaves for the production of formate from CO 2 are an attractive route to solar fuels, yet existing solar formate devices remain low in performance, and their architecture and material choices are underexplored. Herein, we report the fabrication of two distinct fully integrated, self-standing solar formate device architectures and elucidate the underlying design principles and material selection strategies. The first architecture integrates a Si photocathode with a BiVO 4 photoanode and utilizes a highly active Pd catalyst for CO 2 reduction. It represents the first artificial leaf device comprising two photoelectrodes (excluding photovoltaic [PV]-biased electrodes) for effective formate production under single-beam illumination. The second architecture employs a dark cathode and a dark anode driven by a 4-junction perovskite solar cell and uses a highly stable Bi catalyst for CO 2 reduction. This device delivers a record-high formate production rate of 174 µmol h −1 with a remarkable solar-to-formate energy efficiency of 2% among all artificial leaf devices reported to date. Finally, these results demonstrate the feasibility and outline the design principles of both PV-free and PV-assisted device architectures in solar fuel production.

Impact of Electrolyte Composition on Bulk Electrolysis of Furfural over Platinum Electrodes

Partial oxidation of furanic biomass derivatives such as furfural is of interest for the sustainable production of chemicals including furoic acid, maleic acid, and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). The oxidative bulk electrolysis of furfural is here investigated on platinum electrodes in acidic media. The effects of potential, concentration, pH, and supporting anion are studied, and selectivity trends are coupled with attenuated total reflectance surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS) to illuminate adsorbate structures that influence the catalysis. Increasing potential is found to shift selectivity from primarily C 5 products to C 4 products, coincident with oxidation of the Pt surface. Selectivity changes are also observed moving from pH 1 to pH 4, with an increase in C 5 products at higher pH. Furthermore, changing from the weakly adsorbing perchlorate anion to the specifically-adsorbing phosphate anion results in a number of changes that manifest differently depending on potential and pH. Selectivity to furoic acid is found to be highest above the pKa of phosphoric acid due to the strongly adsorbed phosphate ions suppressing flat-lying configurations of furfural that lead to C−C cleavage. These results point toward opportunities to use electrolyte engineering to tune selectivity and optimize surface conditions to disfavor binding of inhibitory products.

Tracking the Light-Induced Excited-State Dynamics and Structural Configurations of an Extraordinarily Long-Lived Metastable State at Room Temperature

Time-resolved X-ray (Tr-XAS) and optical transient absorption (OTA) spectroscopy in the pico-microsecond time scale coupled with Density Functional theory calculations are applied to study the light-induced spin crossover processes of a Fe-based macrocyclic complex in solution. Tr-XAS analysis after light illumination shows the formation of a seven-coordinated high spin quintet metastable state which relaxes to a six-coordinated high spin configuration before decaying to ground state. Kinetic analysis of the macrocyclic complex reveals an unprecedented long-lived decay lifetime of ~42.6 µs. Comparative studies with a non-macrocyclic counterpart illustrate a significantly shortened ~568-old decay lifetime of ~75 ns, and highlight the importance of the ligand arrangement in stabilizing the reactivity of the excited state. Lastly, OTA analysis shows the seven-coordinated high spin state to be formed within ~6.2 ps. Finally, these findings provide a complete understanding of the spin crossover reaction and relaxation pathways of the macrocyclic complex, and reveal the importance of a flexible coordination environment for their rational design.
