Summary of highlights of the symposium

Organized studies to isolate the mechanism which might link solar activity to meteorological phenomena are outlined. The importance of relating meteorological and purely solar parameters is stressed, and the need for further satellite studies on the relation of solar sectors to interplanetary properties of the solar wind and magnetic field lines is emphasized.

The United States earth resources survey program and ERTS experiments benefit highlights

With the launch of the first Earth Resources Technology Satellite in July 1972 a major new tool has become available for decision making in the assessment, exploitation, and management of the earth's resources on a national and international basis. The current status of the earth resources survey program is discussed and the future potential is reviewed. The supportive roles of all stages of the system, including surface, aircraft, and satellite components are noted. Specific cases of application of ERTS data are presented together with a discussion of benefits that might accrue. Need for cooperative, coordinated efforts between participants is emphasized.

Highlights in planetary spectroscopy 1962-75

Recent advances in spectroscopic studies of the planets with ground-based telescopes in the photomultiplier and IR spectral ranges are reviewed. Results of spectroscopic observations of Venus and Mars are briefly summarized, noting that the crucial problem confronting the interpretation of the Venusian spectrum is the nature of the clouds and that the outstanding problem in understanding the Martian atmosphere is the N2 or Ar concentration that may be present. Spectroscopic results for Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are discussed, emphasizing observations of molecular hydrogen, HD, water, (C-13)H4, other hydrocarbons, and deuterated hydrocarbons. IR and visual spectroscopic observations of Titan and Io are reviewed which show that the CH4 bands in Titan's spectrum are pressure broadened and that a flattened ring of sodium is situated around Jupiter in the orbital plane of Io.

Advanced thermionic energy conversion: Joint highlights

A theoretical model was used to study the effects of structured electrodes on converter I-V characteristics and results are given. An auxiliary-ion-source triode operated as a plasmatron was used for studying the enhancement distribution and magnetic effects, and results are reported. Design features of the high current-zero power (ZEPO) converter tests are given.

Technical highlights in general aviation

Improvements in performance, safety, efficiency, and emissions control in general aviation craft are reviewed. While change is slow, the U.S. industries still account for the bulk (90%) of the world's general aviation fleet. Advances in general aviation aerodynamics, structures and materials, acoustics, avionics, and propulsion are described. Supercritical airfoils, drag reduction design, stall/spin studies, crashworthiness and passenger safety, fiberglass materials, flight noise abatement, interior noise and vibration reduction, navigation systems, quieter and cleaner (reciprocating, turboprop, turbofan) engines, and possible benefits of the Global Position Satellite System to general aviation navigation are covered in the discussion. Some of the developments are illustrated.

Balloon-borne ultraviolet stellar spectrograph. I - Instrumentation and observation. II - Highlights of first observational results

A dual star-tracking system and a system including a telescope, an echelle spectrograph, and a SEC vidicon are the chief components of the Balloon-borne Ultraviolet Stellar Spectrograph (BUSS), which has flown four successful missions. The BUSS missions have yielded 81 spectra for 56 stars, recorded with a resolution of 0.1 A in the wavelength range from 2200 to 3400 A. BUSS observations include: profiles of Mg II lines indicating considerable mass flow in early-type supergiants; Mg II features suggesting a cool expanding outer shell above a hotter chromosphere; emission features in Zeta Tau (a shell star) indicating infalling material; and emission features of the Be star Phi Per suggesting mass outflow.

Aerospace highlights and potential medical applications

An attempt is made to provide an overview of activities going on in NASA from aeronautics to manned space flight, to exploration of other planets. Some of the spin-offs of NASA research related to the medical profession are described. The discussion focuses on the Space Shuttle, the unmanned spacecraft Seasat program, the exploration of other planets in the solar system, a water-cooled helmet, and some breakthroughs in medical diagnostic instrumentation.

Highlights of 10th plasma chemistry meeting

The chemical structure is given of a film formed by plasma polymerization from pyridine monomers. The film has a hydrophilic chemical structure, its molecular weight is 900, and the molecular system is C55H50N10O3. The electrical characteristics of a plasma polymerized film are described. The film has good insulating properties and was successfully applied as video disc coating. Etching resistance properties make it possible to use the film as a resist in etching. The characteristics of plasma polymer formed from monomers containing tetramethyltin are discussed. The polymer is in film form, displays good adhesiveness, is similar to UV film UV 35 in light absorption and is highly insulating.

Highlights of NASA/DOE photovoltaic market assessment visit to Morocco

A broad range of agricultural, rural development, and other power applications in various regions of Morocco were examined to determine the potential market for photovoltaic products in Moroccan development. The primary focus of the study was the agriculture sector which accounts for approximately 17% of the country's GNP. The country has a clear need for reliable remote power systems, but does not have the financial resources to invest in the relatively high capital cost PV equipment. A modest potential for PV use was identified in nonagricultural rural services, such as refrigerators for rural clinics and rural radio-telephones. The main potential for PV in Morocco in the next five years lies mainly in the telecommunications sector. Applications include rural TV sets, TV repeater stations, microwave relay stations, and railroad, marine, and airline signalling. Market size estimates were derived from development and expansion plans. At an average customer cost for complete installed systems from $18/Wp to $30/Wp the total potential market value is estimated in the range of $6.6 to $11 million over the 1981-1986 period.
