High-fidelity Modeling and Visualizing of Solar Radiation Pressure A Framework for High-fidelity Analysis

Solar Radiation Pressure (SRP) is the force produced by the impact of sunlight photons on the surface of the spacecraft. This extra force, despite being small, plays an important role on trajectory design and orbit determination. In this pa-per we present an open-source tool that enables the user to compute high-fidelity approximations of SRP accelerations for a given spacecraft using ray-tracing techniques. The tool also allows the user to compare between different fidelity levels and different models like the N-plate or the cannonball finding a trade-off on the SRP accuracy between computation time and accuracy.

Radiation tests of highly scaled, high-density, commercial, nonvolatile NAND flash memories— update 2012

The space radiation environment poses a certain risk to all electronic components on Earth-orbiting and planetary mission spacecraft. In recent years, there has been increased interest in the use of high-density, commercial, nonvolatile flash memories in space because of ever-increasing data volumes and strict power requirements. They are used in a wide variety of spacecraft subsystems. At one end of the spectrum, flash memories are used to store small amounts of mission-critical data such as boot code or configuration files and, at the other end, they are used to construct multi-gigabyte data recorders that record mission science data. This report examines single-event effect (SEE) and total ionizing dose (TID) response in single-level cell (SLC) 32-Gb, multi-level cell (MLC) 64-Gb, and Triple-level (TLC) 64-Gb NAND flash memories manufactured by Micron Technology with feature size of 25 nm.

Extinction and Backscatter retrievals for High Spectral Resolution Lidar for high noise situations

High Spectral Resolution Lidars are uniquely valuable for characterizing atmospheric aerosol and clouds, both alone and in combination with passive instruments such as polarimeters. The benefits of HSRL are the ability to characterize the vertical variability of the atmosphere, to a greater degree than any passive instruments, and – compared to other lidar—additional channels of measurements that permit the direct retrieval of particulate extinction. HSRLs have been successfully deployed from both ground-based and airborne platforms, and will soon be included on satellites as well. From space, new challenges await, due to the need for fully au-tonomous cost-effective instrumentation and lower signal-to-noise ratios. Accordingly, algorithms for the retrieval of HSRL backscatter and extinction must also be reexamined and optimized for best performance in these more challenging circumstances. Motivated by the need for algorithms for the Clio lidar on the future Atmosphere Observing System polar platform, we explore and compare three methods of aerosol extinction retrieval for HSRL data: the direct differentiation method used in standard processing of LaRC airborne HSRL, optimal estimation, and Twomey-Tikhonov regularization. Pros and cons of each methodology will be dis-cussed and explored.

A Virtual Reality Planning Environment for High-Risk, High-Latency Teleoperation

Teleoperation of robots in space is challenging due to high latency and limited workspace visibility. Previously, the Interactive Planning and Supervised Execution (IPSE) and Augmented Virtuality systems were developed to reduce failure risk. These tools were visualized on a 3D da Vinci surgical console and operated using the da Vinci manipulators or visualized on conventional monitors and operated with a keyboard and mouse. Experimental studies indicated operator preference for the latter. In this work, we develop a 3D virtual reality (VR) interface for IPSE, implemented on a Meta Quest 2 head-mounted display (HMD), and evaluate it against the prior 2D, keyboard-and-mouse-based interface. The results demonstrate improved operator load with the 3D VR interface, with no decrease in task performance, while also providing cost and portability benefits compared to the conventional 2D interface.

High Power, High Voltage Electric Power System for Electric Propulsion

This paper provides an overview of the 30 KW, 600 V MRHE power subsystem. Descriptions of the power subsystem elements, the mode of power transfer, and power and mass estimates are presented. A direct-drive architecture for electric propulsion is considered which reduces mass and complexity. Solar arrays with concentrators are used for increased efficiency. Finally, the challenges due to the environment of a hypothetical lunar mission as well as due to the advanced technologies considered are outlined.

Transmission Lines for High Frequency and High Density Packaging

We report on resistivity and chemical stability of Cr/Au bilayers deposited by sputtering on three kinds of substrates: alumina, aluminum nitride and aluminum nitride coated alumina. The insertion loss of Cr/Au microstrip lines fabricated on these three substrates was low and stable after 100 cycles in the -65 degree C to 125 degree C temperature range.
