Tunable quantum anomalous Hall effects in ferromagnetic van der Waals heterostructures

ABSTRACT The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) has unique advantages in topotronic applications, but it is still challenging to realize the QAHE with tunable magnetic and topological properties for building functional devices. Through systematic first-principles calculations, we predict that the in-plane magnetization induced QAHE with Chern numbers C = ±1 and the out-of-plane magnetization induced QAHE with high Chern numbers C = ±3 can be realized in a single material candidate, which is composed of van der Waals (vdW) coupled Bi and MnBi2Te4 monolayers. The switching between different phases of QAHE can be controlled in multiple ways, such as applying strain or (weak) magnetic field or twisting the vdW materials. The prediction of an experimentally available material system hosting robust, highly tunable QAHE will stimulate great research interest in the field. Our work opens a new avenue for the realization of tunable QAHE and provides a practical material platform for the development of topological electronics.

Itinerant ferromagnetism and intrinsic anomalous Hall effect in amorphous iron-germanium

The amorphous iron-germanium system ( a - Fe x Ge 1 - x ) lacks long-range structural order and hence lacks a significant Brillouin zone. The magnetization of a - Fe x Ge 1 - x is well explained by the Stoner model for Fe concentrations x above the onset of magnetic order around x = 0.4 , indicating that the local order of the amorphous structure preserves the spin-split density of states of the Fe- 3 d states sufficiently to polarize the electronic structure despite k being a bad quantum number. Measurements reveal an enhanced anomalous Hall resistivity ρ x y AH relative to crystalline FeGe; this ρ x y AH is compared to density-functional theory calculations of the anomalous Hall conductivity to resolve its underlying mechanisms. The intrinsic mechanism, typically understood as the Berry curvature integrated over occupied k states but shown here to be equivalent to the density of curvature integrated over occupied energies in aperiodic materials, dominates the anomalous Hall conductivity of a - Fe x Ge 1 - x ( 0.38 ≤ x ≤ 0.61 ). The density of curvature is the sum of spin-orbit correlations of local orbital states and can hence be calculated with no reference to k space. This effect and the accompanying Stoner-like model for the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity establish a unified understanding of the underlying physics of the anomalous Hall effect in both crystalline and disordered systems.

Carrier tuning of Stoner ferromagnetism in ThCr 2 Si 2 -structure cobalt arsenides

CaCo 2–y As 2 is an unusual itinerant magnet with signatures of extreme magnetic frustration. The conditions for establishing magnetic order in such itinerant frustrated magnets, either by reducing frustration or increasing electronic correlations, is an open question. Here, we use results from inelastic neutron scattering and magnetic susceptibility measurements and density functional theory calculations to show that hole doping in Ca(Co 1–x Fe x ) 2–y As 2 suppresses magnetic order by quenching the magnetic moment while maintaining the same level of magnetic frustration. In this work, the suppression is due to tuning the Fermi energy away from a peak in the electronic density of states originating from a flat conduction band. This results in the complete elimination of the magnetic moment by $\textit{x}$ ≈ 0.25, providing a clear example of a Stoner-type transition.

Two-step electronic response to magnetic ordering in a van der Waals ferromagnet

The two-dimensional material Cr 2 ⁢Ge 2 ⁢Te 6 is a member of the class of insulating van der Waals (vdW) magnets. Here, using high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in a detailed temperature dependence study, we identify a clear response of the electronic structure to a dimensional crossover in the form of two distinct temperature scales marking onsets of modifications in the electronic structure. Specifically, we observe Te 𝑝-orbital-dominated bands to undergo changes at the Curie transition temperature 𝑇 𝐶 while the Cr 𝑑-orbital-dominated bands begin evolving at a higher temperature scale. Combined with neutron scattering, density functional theory calculations, and Monte Carlo simulations, we find that the electronic system can be consistently understood to respond sequentially to the distinct temperatures at which in-plane and out-of-plane spin correlations exceed a characteristic length scale. Finally, our findings reveal the sensitivity of the orbital-selective electronic structure for probing the dynamical evolution of local moment correlations in vdW insulating magnets.

Bloch Chirality Induced by an Interlayer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction in Ferromagnetic Multilayers

Chiral spin textures stabilized by the interfacial Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction, such as skyrmions and homochiral domain walls, have been shown to exhibit qualities that make them attractive for their incorporation in a variety of spintronic devices. However, for thicker multilayer films, mixed textures occur in which an achiral Bloch component coexists with a chiral Néel component of the domain wall to reduce the demagnetization field at the film surface. We show that an interlayer Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction can break the degeneracy between Bloch chiralities. We further find large population asymmetries and chiral branching in the Bloch component of the domain walls in well-ordered Co/Pd multilayers. This asymmetry is a result of the combined effect of the demagnetization field and an interlayer Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction, and is strongly related to film thickness and structural ordering. This work paves the way toward the utilization of this effect toward controlling Bloch chirality in magnetic multilayers.

Collective Ferromagnetism of Artificial Square Spin Ice

In this work, we study the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the total magnetic moment of large-area permalloy artificial square spin ice arrays. The temperature dependence and hysteresis behavior are consistent with the coherent magnetization reversal expected in the Stoner-Wohlfarth model, with clear deviations due to interisland interactions at small lattice spacing. Through micromagnetic simulations, we explore this behavior and demonstrate that the deviations result from increasingly complex magnetization reversal at small lattice spacing, induced by interisland interactions, and depending critically on details of the island shapes. These results establish new means to tune the physical properties of artificial spin ice structures and other interacting nanomagnet systems, such as patterned magnetic media.
