Magnetic order and fluctuations in the quasi-two-dimensional planar magnet Sr( Co 1-x Ni x ) 2 As 2

We use neutron scattering to investigate spin excitations in Sr ( Co 1 - x Ni x ) 2 As 2 , which has a c -axis incommensurate helical structure of the two-dimensional (2D) in-plane ferromagnetic (FM) ordered layers for 0.013 ≤ x ≤ 0.25 . By comparing the wave vector and energy dependent spin excitations in helical ordered Sr ( Co 0.9 Ni 0.1 ) 2 As 2 and paramagnetic SrCo 2 As 2 , we find that Ni doping, while increasing lattice disorder in Sr ( Co 1 - x Ni x ) 2 As 2 , enhances quasi-2D FM spin fluctuations. However, our band structure calculations within the combined density functional theory and dynamic mean field theory ( DFT + DMFT ) failed to generate a correct incommensurate wave vector for the observed helical order from nested Fermi surfaces. Furthermore, since transport measurements reveal increased in-plane and c -axis electrical resistivity with increasing Ni doping and associated lattice disorder, we conclude that the helical magnetic order in Sr ( Co 1 - x Ni x ) 2 As 2 may arise from a quantum order-by-disorder mechanism through the itinerant electron mediated Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions.

Role of phonon softening induced by anisotropic fluctuations in the enhanced mobility at free glassy surfaces

The surface of a glassy material exhibits enhanced mobility compared to the bulk counterpart, however the underlying mechanism for this remains elusive. Herein, we present studies of the dynamical properties of a prototypical glass-forming metallic liquid Zr 50 Cu 50 as a function of the distance from both the free surface and pinned surface using molecular dynamics simulations. We found that the surface mobility increases gradually on approaching the free surface, with a concomitant increase of the non-Gaussianity. The phonon density of states at the free surface exhibits lower characteristic frequencies than in the bulk and pinned surface. These findings suggest phonon softening caused by anisotropic fluctuations at free surfaces as an alternative physical mechanism leading to the enhanced dynamics at free glassy surfaces from the perspective of collective excitations.

Fluctuation-induced interactions and the spin-glass transition in Fe 2 TiO 5

In this work, we investigate the spin-glass transition in the strongly frustrated well-known compound Fe 2 TiO 5 . A remarkable feature of this transition, widely discussed in the literature, is its anisotropic properties: The transition manifests itself in the magnetic susceptibly only along one axis, despite Fe 3 + d 5 spins having no orbital component. We demonstrate, using neutron scattering, that below the transition temperature T g = 55 K, Fe 2 TiO 5 develops nanoscale surfboard-shaped antiferromagnetic regions in which the Fe 3 + spins are aligned perpendicular to the axis which exhibits freezing. We show that the glass transition may result from the freezing of transverse fluctuations of the magnetization of these regions and we develop a mean-field replica theory of such a transition, revealing a type of magnetic van der Waals effect.

Pressure-induced changes of valence fluctuation in β - YbAlB 4 probed by x-ray absorption spectroscopy

Here we report detailed valence fluctuation phenomena in the unique quantum-critical compound β-YbAlB 4 under pressures and at low temperatures. We directly observed the drastic change in the pressure dependence of the mean Yb valence at about 3 GPa with no pressure-induced structural transition. Below 3 GPa, the anomaly in the temperature dependences of the mean Yb valence was observed at about 55 K under ambient pressure, corresponding to a previously observed reduced Kondo coherence temperature, and this temperature rapidly decreases to 22 K at 2.2 GPa, in contrast to the monotonous decrease of the high Kondo temperature (~250K at ambient pressure). The present results reveal that this reduced Kondo coherence temperature is responsible for the unconventional quantum critical behaviors in β-YbAlB 4 . Above 3 GPa, it was found that the temperature dependence of the mean Yb valence exhibits a discontinuous change at low temperature (10.5 and 9 K under 4.8 and 5.5 GPa, respectively).

Thermal conductivity and theory of inelastic scattering of phonons by collective fluctuations

We study the intrinsic scattering of phonons by a general quantum degree of freedom, i.e., a fluctuating “field” Q, which may have completely general correlations, restricted only by unitarity and translational invariance. From the induced scattering rates, generalizing the model studied in a companion paper [Mangeolle et al., Phys. Rev. X 12, 041031 (2022)], we obtain the consequences on the thermal conductivity tensor of the phonons. We confirm that, even within our generalized model, the off-diagonal scattering rates involve a minimum of three- to four-point correlation functions of the Q fields, and we discuss the “semiclassical” versus “quantum” nature of all contributions. We obtain general and explicit forms for these correlations which isolate the contributions to the Hall conductivity, and we provide a general discussion of the implications of symmetry and equilibrium; this elaborates on, and extends, the results of Mangeolle et al. [Phys. Rev. X 12, 041031 (2022)]. We also extend the discussion and evaluation of these two- (diagonal scattering) and four-point correlation functions, and hence the thermal transport, for the illustrative example of an ordered two-dimensional antiferromagnet, where the Q field is a composite of magnon operators arising from spin-lattice coupling, and confirm numerically that the results, while satisfying all the necessary symmetry restrictions, lead to nonvanishing scattering and Hall effects. In particular, we investigate, both analytically and numerically, the dependence of such intrinsic scattering on a crucial parameter—the magnon to phonon velocity ratio v. We in particular confirm that within some range of v of order 1 the skew-scattering mechanism leads to comparable thermal Hall conductivity for thermal currents within and normal to the plane of the antiferromagnetism, and we discover that the temperature scaling of the longitudinal conductivity displays a threshold effect and a nonuniversal, continuous variation of the scaling exponent with v.

Magnetic Structure and Spin Fluctuation in Colossal Magnetoresistance Ferrimagnet Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6

The ferrimagnetic insulator Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 , which features a Curie temperature T c at 78 K and a delicate yet consequential magnetic frustration, exhibits colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) when the magnetic field is applied along the magnetic hard axis, surprisingly inconsistent with existing precedents [Y. Ni, H. Zhao, Y. Zhang, B. Hu, I. Kimchi, and G. Cao, Phys. Rev. B 103, L161105 (2021)]. This discovery motivates a thorough single-crystal neutron diffraction study in order to gain insights into the magnetic structure and its hidden correlation with the new type of CMR. Here we report a noncollinear magnetic structure below the T c where the moments lie predominantly within the basal plane but tilt toward the c axis by ≈10° at ambient conditions. A substantial magnetic diffuse scattering decays slowly and persists well above the T c . The evolution of the spin correlation lengths agrees well with the electrical resistivity, underscoring the role of spin fluctuation contributing to the magnetoresistivity near the transition. Further, application of magnetic field along the c axis renders a swift occurrence of CMR but only a slow tilting of the magnetic moments toward the c axis. The unparalleled changes indicate a nonconsequential role of magnetic polarization.

Fluctuating intertwined stripes in the strange metal regime of the Hubbard model

Strongly correlated electron systems host a variety of poorly understood correlations in their high-temperature normal state. Unlike ordered phases defined by order parameters, regions of the normal state are often defined through unconventional properties such as strange metallic transport or spectroscopic pseudogaps. Characterizing the microscopic correlations in the normal state is necessary to elucidate mechanisms that lead to these properties and their connection to ground-state orders. Here, in this paper, we establish the presence of intertwined charge and spin stripes in the strange metal normal state of the Hubbard model using determinant quantum Monte Carlo calculations. The charge and spin density waves constituting the stripes are fluctuating and short ranged; yet they obey a mutual commensurability relation and remain microscopically interlocked, as evidenced through measurements of three-point spin-spin-hole correlation functions. Our findings demonstrate the ability of many-body numerical simulations to unravel the microscopic correlations that define quantum states of matter.

Phonon softening and slowing-down of charge density wave fluctuations in BaNi 2 As 2

BaNi 2 As 2 is a nonmagnetic analog of the iron pnictide superconductors, and exhibits an incommensurate charge density wave (IC-CDW) and a sizable elastoresistance. Here, in this Letter, phonons in BaNi 2 As 2 associated with the IC-CDW and uniform in-plane lattice distortions are investigated using high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering. The in-plane transverse acoustic phonons reveal no softening at temperatures where the elastoresistance increases strongly, indicating the latter to be electronically driven. Systematic phonon measurements suggest the IC-CDW occurs in two stages upon cooling: Underdamped phonons first soften to zero energy well above the IC-CDW ordering temperature, then the resulting quasielastic IC-CDW fluctuations gradually slow down and coalesce into the static IC-CDW order. A possible origin for our observations is the IC-CDW in BaNi 2 As 2 being uniaxial, which provides an additional Ising degree of freedom favorable for disordered IC-CDW modulations, and accounts for the elastoresistance through a weak coupling to the lattice.

Competing magnetic fluctuations and orders in a multiorbital model of doped SrCo 2 ⁢As 2

We revisit the intriguing magnetic behavior of the paradigmatic itinerant frustrated magnet Sr⁢Co 2 ⁢As 2 , which shows strong and competing magnetic fluctuations yet does not develop long-range magnetic order. By calculating the static spin susceptibility Χ⁡(q) within a realistic 16-orbital Hubbard-Hund model, we determine the leading instability to be ferromagnetic (FM). We then explore the effect of doping and calculate the critical Hubbard interaction strength U c that is required for the development of magnetic order. We find that U c decreases under electron doping and with increasing Hund's coupling J, but increases rapidly under hole doping. This suggests that magnetic order could possibly emerge under electron doping but not under hole doping, which agrees with experimental findings. We map out the leading magnetic instability as a function of doping and Hund's coupling and find several antiferromagnetic phases in addition to FM. We also quantify the degree of itinerant frustration in the model and resolve the contributions of different orbitals to the magnetic susceptibility. Lastly, we discuss the dynamic spin susceptibility Χ⁡(q,ω) at finite frequencies, where we recover the anisotropy of the peaks at Q π = (π,0) and (0,π) observed by inelastic neutron scattering that is associated with the phenomenon of itinerant magnetic frustration. By comparing results between theory and experiment, we conclude that the essential experimental features of doped SrCo 2 ⁢As 2 are well captured by an itinerant Hubbard-Hund multiorbital model if one considers a small shift of the chemical potential towards hole doping.

Absence of strong magnetic fluctuations or interactions in the normal state of LaNiGa 2

Here, we present nuclear magnetic (NMR) and quadrupole (NQR) resonance and magnetization data in the normal state of the topological crystalline superconductor LaNiGa 2 . We find no evidence of significant magnetic fluctuations or enhanced paramagnetism. These results suggest that the time-reversal symmetry breaking previously reported in the superconducting state of this material is not driven by strong electron correlations.

Local aging effects in PuB 4 : Growing inhomogeneity and slow dynamics of local field fluctuations probed by 239 Pu NMR

Plutonium-based correlated electron materials host exotic physical phenomena ranging from unconventional heavy-fermion superconductivity to topological Kondo insulating states. Self-irradiation damage can influence many properties of such radioactive materials. Structural disorder effects due to α radiation have been frequently studied using techniques such as transport, thermodynamics, and x-ray diffraction. Here, in this study, we use 239 Pu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to study the long-term influence of self-damage on the lattice and local electronic structures in a single crystal of the candidate topological insulator plutonium tetraboride (PuB 4 ). We first characterize the anisotropy of the 239 Pu resonance and confirm the local axial-site symmetry inferred from previous polycrystalline measurements. Aging effects are then evaluated over the time frame of six years. We find that, though the static 239 Pu NMR spectra show a slight modulation in their shape, their field-rotation pattern reveals no change in 239 Pu local site symmetry over time, suggesting that aging has a surprisingly small impact on the spatial distribution of the static hyperfine field. Further, ligand-site 11 B NMR finds little time-dependent change in the size of electric field gradient around 11 B sites. By contrast, aging has a prominent impact on the 239 Pu NMR relaxation processes and signal intensity. Specifically, aging-induced damage manifests itself as an increase in the spin-lattice relaxation time 𝑇 1 , an increased distribution of 𝑇 1 , and a signal intensity that decreases linearly by 20% per year. An effective spin-spin relaxation time 𝑇 2,eff in the aged sample shortens drastically towards lower temperature, suggesting growth of slow fluctuations of the hyperfine field that are linked to radiation-damage-induced inhomogeneity. Our NMR study sheds light on the interplay of radiation damage and local magnetic interactions in correlated insulators.

Nonstatistical fluctuations in the 35 Cl(n,p) 35 S reaction cross section at fast-neutron energies from 0.6 to 6 MeV

The lack of experimental data on the 35 Cl(n,p) 35 S reaction above 100 keV has led to nuclear data evaluations that are relatively unconstrained at fast neutron energies. As a result, efforts to explore, develop, and potentially certify next generation reactor designs that incorporate chloride salts as a coolant material have been hindered. Here, we report partial cross section data for the 35 Cl(n,p) 35 S and 35 Cl(n,α) 32 P reactions at incident neutron energies between 0.6 MeV and 6 MeV. The measurement was performed using the pulsed beam of neutrons at the unmoderated WNR spallation neutron source at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center, with the outgoing charged particles detected by the LENZ experimental setup, consisting of annular silicon detectors. Nonstatistical fluctuations in the 35 Cl(n,p 0 ) cross section were observed up to around 3 MeV, and the magnitude of the cross section was systematically lower than all available data evaluations at energies above 1 MeV. Modifications to the ENDF/B-VIII.0 data evaluation are suggested to better reproduce the energy averaged experimental data.

Transverse momentum fluctuations and their correlation with elliptic flow in nuclear collision

In this article, we propose observables v 0 and v 0 (p T ) which quantify the relative fluctuations in the total transverse momentum at fixed multiplicity. We first study the factorization of the fixed multiplicity momentum dependent two particle correlation function into a product of v 0 ($p^{a}_{T}$) and v 0 ($p^{b}_{T}$) within realistic hydrodynamic simulations. Then we present computations of v 0 (p T ) for different particle types. We determine the relation between the integrated v 0 and previously measured observables, and compare results from a hybrid hydrodynamics based model to experimental data. The effects of bulk viscosity and an initial pre-equilibrium stage on the results are quantified. We find that v 0 is strongly correlated with the initial state entropy per elliptic area, S/A. Using this result, we explain how the observed correlations between the elliptic flow and the transverse momentum (both in simulations and experiment) reflect the initial state correlations between 1/A and ellipticity ε 2 at fixed multiplicity. Furthermore, we argue that the systematic experimental study of v 0 , with the same sophistication as used for the other v n , can contribute significantly to our understanding of quark gluon plasma properties.

Baseline predictions of elliptic flow and fluctuations for the RHIC Beam Energy Scan using response coefficients

Currently the RHIC Beam Energy Scan is exploring a new region of the Quantum Chromodynamic phase diagram at large baryon densities that approaches nuclear astrophysics regimes. This provides an opportunity to study relativistic hydrodynamics in a regime where the net conserved charges of baryon number, strangeness, and electric charge play a role, which will significantly change the theoretical approach to simulating the baryon-dense Quark-Gluon Plasma. In this work, we detail many of the important changes needed to adapt both initial conditions and the medium to baryon-rich matter. Then, we make baseline predictions for the elliptical flow and fluctuations based on extrapolating the physics at LHC and top RHIC energies to support future analyses of where and how the new baryon-dense physics causes these extrapolations to break down. First we compare eccentricities across beam energies, exploring their underlying assumptions; we find the the extrapolated initial state is predicted to be nearly identical to that at AuAu $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. Then the final flow harmonic predictions are based on linear+cubic response. We discuss preliminary STAR results in order to determine the implications that they have for linear+cubic response coefficients at the lowest beam energy of AuAu $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7 GeV.

Correlating confinement to topological fluctuations near the crossover transition in QCD

We show the existence of strong (anti)correlations between the topological hot spots and the local values of the trace of the Polyakov loop in 2 + 1 flavor QCD with physical quark mass, in the vicinity of the crossover transition corresponding to the simultaneous restoration of chiral symmetry and deconfinement. Using sophisticated lattice techniques, we have carefully identified the topological hot spots using quark zero modes and measured the short-distance fluctuations of the Polyakov loop about them, showing how the latter is repelled quite strongly around the peak of the zero modes. Though we could explain some aspects of these correlations within the instanton-dyon picture, our work sets the stage for a larger goal towards a systematic study of the role of different topological species that interact with the Polyakov loop, establishing the strong connection between topology and confinement.

Low Mach number fluctuating hydrodynamics model for ionic liquids

We present a new mesoscale model for ionic liquids based on a low Mach number fluctuating hydrodynamics formulation for multicomponent charged species. The low Mach number approach eliminates sound waves from the fully compressible equations leading to a computationally efficient incompressible formulation. The model uses a Gibbs free energy functional that includes enthalpy of mixing, interfacial energy, and electrostatic contributions. These lead to a new fourth-order term in the mass equations and a reversible stress in the momentum equations. We calibrate our model using parameters for [DMPI+][F6P-], an extensively-studied room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL), and numerically demonstrate the formation of mesoscopic structuring at equilibrium in two and three dimensions. In simulations with electrode boundaries the measured double layer capacitance decreases with voltage, in agreement with theoretical predictions and experimental measurements for RTILs. Finally, we present a shear electroosmosis example to demonstrate that the methodology can be used to model electrokinetic flows.

Observing the Suppression of Superconductivity in RbEuFe 4 As 4 by Correlated Magnetic Fluctuations

Our scanning Hall microscopy data reveal a pronounced suppression of the superfluid density near the magnetic ordering temperature in good qualitative agreement with a recently developed model describing the suppression of superconductivity by correlated magnetic fluctuations. Furthermore, these results indicate a pronounced exchange interaction between the superconducting and magnetic subsystems in RbEuFe 4 As 4 , with important implications for future investigations of physical phenomena arising from the interplay between them.

Freezing of a Disorder Induced Spin Liquid with Strong Quantum Fluctuations

We report Sr2CuTe 0.5 W 0.5 O 6 is a square-lattice magnet with superexchange between S =$\frac{1}{2}$Cu 2+ spins mediated by randomly distributed Te and W ions. Here, using sub-K temperature and 20 μeV energy resolution neutron scattering experiments we show that this system transits from a gapless disorder-induced spin liquid to a new quantum state below T f =1.7(1) K, exhibiting a weak frozen moment of $\langle$S$\rangle$/S~0.1 and low energy dynamic susceptibility, χ"(ℏω), linear in energy which is surprising for such a weak freezing in this highly fluctuating quantum regime.
