Production of Xenon-135 from isotopically enriched Xenon-134 and Xenon-136 Targets

Atmospheric radioxenon analyses conducted under the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) necessitates the collection and analysis of air samples to quantify 135Xe, an indicator for nuclear explosions and reactor operations. Analytical instrument calibration for these analyses requires high quality, monoisotopic reference standards that are typically short lived, and therefore must be produced and shipped promptly to monitoring stations worldwide. This work describes the preparation of 135Xe by neutron capture (n, ?) on monoisotopic 134Xe, neutron irradiation (n,2n) on monoisotopic 136Xe, and high energy photon irradiation (?, n) on monoisotopic 136Xe. The targets are prepared by electromagnetic isotope separation of natural xenon. Results from each process are compared for 135Xe yield and purity.

Validation of MCNP Critical Benchmarks Models of Highly Enriched Uranium Cylinders

A new centralized repository of high-quality MCNP models of critical benchmark experiments is currently under development at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The benchmark experiments are described in the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) Handbook, and the initial set of benchmark models are derived from the Whisper Suite provided with MCNP6.2. This effort is a collaboration among the Nuclear Criticality Safety, Nuclear Data, and Monte Carlo code development/application organization at LANL. The objective is to create a current single LANL benchmark collection that includes the latest ICSBEP revision that has a formal review and revision process, is contained in an open- source repository, and utilizes new Python tools for improved input and output file review.

Enrichment of amino acids from biomass residuum

The present invention relates to methods of providing a biomass residuum and compositions thereof. In particular examples, the biomass residuum includes one or more high value amino acids, even after removal of mixed alcohol components. In particular, the methods include implementing pre-treatment conditions and employing fermentation conditions including modified organisms.

Alkaline cation enrichment and water electrolysis to provide CO 2 mineralization and global-scale carbon management

Provided herein are methods of removing carbon dioxide from an aqueous stream or gaseous stream by: contacting the gaseous stream comprising carbon dioxide, when present, with an aqueous solution comprising ions capable of forming an insoluble carbonate salt; contacting the aqueous solution comprising carbon dioxide with an electroactive mesh that induces its alkalinization thereby forcing the precipitation of a carbonate solid from the solution and thereby the removal of dissolved inorganic carbon by electrolysis; and removing the precipitated carbonate solids from the solution, or the surface of the mesh where they may deposit. Also provided herein are flow-through electrolytic reactors comprising an intake device in fluid connection with a rotating cylinder comprising an electroactive mesh, and a scraping device and/or liquid-spray based device for separating a solid from the mesh surface.

High Assay Low Enriched Uranium - A material in demand and the supply efforts underway

The presentation briefly describes the HALEU demand, sources of supply, & work underway @ INL to meet some of the demand. It highlights HALEU recovery from EBR-II, process enhancements including recasting via multi tier drip cast crucible method to produce reduced dose and reduced physical size uranium ingots referred to as regulus. Includes additional polishing, to improve applicability to meeting HALEU needs and briefly touches on innovative recycling concepts under development (i.e. Zircex). HALEU enables reactors of reduced size, provides for increased fuel efficiency and longer core life, all of which contribute to less waste generation. Supplying HALEU from recycled material has the potential for further reductions in waste generation through via reductions in SNF disposition.

AMIA KDDM Working Group Collaborative Workshop: Enriching Electronic Health Records with Social Determinants of Health to Improve Outcomes and Health Equity

Prior research has demonstrated that social determinants of health (SDoH) are major drivers of health outcomes and contributors to widespread health inequities. It was estimated that, in the United States, SDoH could be responsible for up to 40% of all preventable deaths, significantly higher than the 10-15% for which better medical care is responsible. Public health interventions that target SDoH are instrumental for improving health outcomes and reducing long-standing health inequities. Currently, most mainstream EHR vendors have implemented SDoH screeners in their EHR systems. However, the utility of the screeners is low, rendering patient-level SDoH still widely unavailable in the structured fields. SDoH are sometimes mentioned in free-text clinical notes (e.g., social context section) where natural language processing (NLP) can be applied to extract relevant information. Contextual-level SDoH can be identified from multiple data sources, many of which are publicly available and spatiotemporally linked to EHR data. As such, there is an opportunity for the KDDM research community to create innovative solutions to draw meaningful insights by creating and using rich data with SDoH to improve health outcomes while reducing disparities. In this workshop organized by AMIA Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining Working Group (AMIA KDDM WG), we will invite world-leading experts from academia, national laboratories, and life science industry with varied backgrounds in biomedical informatics, epidemiology, data science, machine learning, natural language processing, and pediatric cardiology to discuss the best practice of capturing, standardizing, and using SDoH information in various applications aiming at improving outcomes and health equity.
