MMIC devices for active phased array antennas

The study of printed circuit discontinuities is necessary in order to design, for example, transitions between rectangular waveguides and printed circuits. New developments with respect to the analytical approaches to this problem are discussed. A summary of the progress in the experimental approach is presented. The accurate solution for the modes in various millimeter-wave waveguides is essential in the analysis of many integrated circuit components, such as filters and impedance transformers. Problems associated with the numerical computation of these modes in two frequently used waveguide forms, namely, the finline and microstrip, are presented. The spectral domain method of formulation, with a moment method solution, is considered. This approach can be readily extended to analyze an arbitrary configuration of dielectric and metallized regions in a shielded enclosure. Galerkin's method is used, where the testing and basic functions are the same. It is shown that the mode functions, or eigenfunctions, are more sensitive to errors than the phase constants, or eigenvalues. The approximate mode functions do not satisfy the orthogonality relationship well, resulting in difficulties when these modal solutions are used to form an approximate Green's function or are used in a mode matching analysis.

Aircraft cabin noise prediction and optimization

Theoretical and experimental studies were conducted to determine the noise transmission into acoustic enclosures ranging from simple rectangular box models to full scale light aircraft in flight. The structural models include simple, stiffened, curved stiffened, and orthotropic panels and double wall windows. The theoretical solutions were obtained by model analysis. Transfer matrix and finite element procedures were utilized. Good agreement between theory and experiment has been achieved. An efficient acoustic add-on treatment was developed for interior noise control in a twin engine light aircraft.

Measurements of the response of transport aircraft ceiling panels to fuel pool fires

Tests were performed to characterize the responses of various aircraft ceiling panel configurations to a simulated post-crash fire. Attention was given to one currently used and four new ceiling configurations exposed to a fuel pool fire in a circulated air enclosure. The tests were controlled to accurately represent conditions in a real fire. The panels were constructed of fiberglass-epoxy, graphite-phenolic resin, fiberglass-phenolic resin, Kevlar-epoxy, and Kevlar-phenolic resin materials. The phenolic resin-backed sheets performed the best under the circumstances, except when combined with Kevlar, which became porous when charred.

Pressure measurement system for the National Transonic Facility

The electronically scanned pressure (ESP) measurement system concept was selected for application at the Langley Research Center's National Transonic Facility. This pressure measurement application required a complex system design to meet the pressure resolution, range, and accuracy requirements over this facility's wide operating pressure and temperature range of 1.38 x 10 to the 5th to 9.3 x 10 to the 5th N/sq m and 80 to 340 K, respectively. The design uses five ESP systems to measure the nearly 1000 channels of pressure located throughout the facility circuit. Pressure modules mounted inside the facility were housed in specially designed thermal enclosures, while the modules mounted outside the tunnel were mounted in pressure vessels. The unique features of this pressure measurement system design including a special ESP module pressure calibration unit are presented.

An experimental reciprocating expander for cryocooler application

An experimental reciprocating expander was designed with features appropriate for cryocooler cycles. The expander has a displacer piston, simple valves, and a hydraulic/pneumatic stroking mechanism. The expander has a valve in head configuration with the valves extending out the bottom of the vacuum enclosure while the piston extends out the top. The expander was tested using a CTI 1400 liquefier to supply 13 atm in the temperature range 4.2 to 12 K. Expander efficiency was measured in the range 84 to 93% while operating the apparatus as a supercritical wet expander and in the range 91 to 93% aa a single phase expander. The apparatus can also be modified to operate as a compressor for saturated helium vapor.

Prediction of Acoustical Response of Three-dimensional Cavities Using an Indirect Boundary Element Method

A technique which characterizes the acoustics of generalized cavities with the minimum model possible is developed. All boundary element methods have two advantages over finite element methods: (1) the models are smaller; and (2) the assumed variable behavior, inherent in the method to allow discretization, is harmonic rather than polynomial. Further, IBEM often requires one rather than two numerical boundary integrals as required by DBEM. Thus, a quadratic, isoparametric IBEM program was developed. The source distribution in this solution is continuous and quadratically variable rather than continuous and constant. The program was also formulated to include the additional capability of interior point sources and impedance boundary conditions. To test the quadratic, isoparametric IBEM program, several simple cavity enclosure problems where studied. Results are shown.

Simulation of the temperature distribution in crystals grown by Czochralski method

Production of perfect crystals, free of residual strain and dislocations and with prescribed dopant concentration, by the Czochralski method is possible only if the complex, interacting phenomena that affect crystal growth in a Cz-puller are fully understood and quantified. Natural and forced convection in the melt, thermocapillary effect and heat transfer in and around the crystal affect its growth rate, the shape of the crystal-melt interface and the temperature gradients in the crystal. The heat transfer problem in the crystal and between the crystal and all other surfaces present in the crystal pulling apparatus are discussed at length. A simulation and computer algorithm are used, based on the following assumptions: (1) only conduction occurs in the crystal (experimentally determined conductivity as a function of temperature is used), (2) melt temperature and the melt-crystal heat transfer coefficient are available (either as constant values or functions of radial position), (3) pseudo-steady state is achieved with respect to temperature gradients, (4) crystal radius is fixed, and (5) both direct and reflected radiation exchange occurs among all surfaces at various temperatures in the crystal puller enclosure.

Solid sorbent air sampler

A fluid sampler for collecting a plurality of discrete samples over separate time intervals is described. The sampler comprises a sample assembly having an inlet and a plurality of discreet sample tubes each of which has inlet and outlet sides. A multiport dual acting valve is provided in the sampler in order to sequentially pass air from the sample inlet into the selected sample tubes. The sample tubes extend longitudinally of the housing and are located about the outer periphery thereof so that upon removal of an enclosure cover, they are readily accessible for operation of the sampler in an analysis mode.

Propagation of quasifracture in viscoelastic media under low-cycle repeated stressing

The propagation of a craze as quasifracture under repeated cyclic stressing in polymeric systems has been under intensive investigation recently. Based upon a time-dependent crazing theory, the governing differential equation describing the propagation of a single craze as quasifracture in an infinite viscoelastic plate has been solved for sinusoidal stresses. Numerical methods have been employed to obtain the normalized craze length as a function of time. The computed results indicate that the length of a quasifracture may decelerate and decrease indicating that its velocity can reverse. This behavior may be consistent with the observed and much discussed craze healing and the enclosure model in fatigue and fracture of solids.

The National Transonic Facility

The National Transonic Facility, NTF, is a high Reynolds Number facility where the increase in Reynolds Number is obtained by operating at high pressures and low temperatures. Liquid nitrogen is allowed to vaporize, making gaseous nitrogen the test medium with temperatures extending down to approximately 100 degrees Kelvin. These factors have created unique, new challenges to those developing sensors and instrumentation. Pressure vessels, thermal enclosures or elaborate temperature compensations schemes, are needed for environmental protection and special materials are needed for sensors and model fabrication. The need for a new measurement, model deformation, was also created. An extensive program to develop the unique sensors and instrumentation was initiated. The data acquisition system and systems to measure aerodynamic forces and pressures, model attitude, and model deformation, are discussed.

Orbital maneuvering vehicle thermal design and analysis techniques

This paper describes the OMV thermal design that is required to maintain components within temperature limits for all mission phases. A key element in the OMV thermal design is the application of a motorized thermal shade assembly that is a replacement for the more conventional variable conductance heat pipes or louvers. The thermal shade assembly covers equipment module radiator areas, and based upon the radiator temperature input to onboard computer, opens and closes the shade, varying the effective radiator area. Thermal design verification thermal analyses results are presented. Selected thermal analyses methods, including several unique subroutines, are discussed. A representation of enclosure Script F equations, in matrix form, is also included. Personal computer application to the development of the OMV thermal design is summarized.

Interface shape in Czochralski grown crystals - Effect of conduction and radiation

A sequential modular computational scheme has been proposed for the calculation of temperature profiles in the melt and crystal including the melt-crystal interface shape and the crystal pulling rate for a fixed crystal radius. The heat transfer in the melt is assumed to occur by conduction only. The shape of melt-gas meniscus, described by Laplace-Young equation, is incorporated in the model and its effects on interface shape and pulling rate are examined. Further, the model incorporates the detailed radiation interaction among the various surfaces in the puller using the Gebhart enclosure theory which accounts for both direct and reflected radiation. The effects of various process parameters on the interface shape and the pulling rate have been investigated. The results of this study indicate that the shape of the melt-gas meniscus has a significant effect on the pulling rate and the interface shape in conformity with earlier studies. Further, it is shown that a simple radiation model (Stefan's model) is inadequate to model the radiation heat exchange in the Czochralski puller apparatus and the detailed Gebhart analysis is necessary for accurate calculation of both the temperature profile in the crystal as well as the interface shape.
