Development of signal processing algorithms for ultrasonic detection of coal seam interfaces

A pattern recognition system is presented for determining the thickness of coal remaining on the roof and floor of a coal seam. The system was developed to recognize reflected pulse echo signals that are generated by an acoustical transducer and reflected from the coal seam interface. The flexibility of the system, however, should enable it to identify pulse-echo signals generated by radar or other techniques. The main difference being the specific features extracted from the recorded data as a basis for pattern recognition.

Applications of remote sensing, volume 1

The author has identified the following significant results. ECHO successfully exploits the redundancy of states characteristics of sampled imagery of ground scenes to achieve better classification accuracy, reduce the number of classifications required, and reduce the variability of classification results. The information required to produce ECHO classifications are cell size, cell homogeneity, cell-to-field annexation parameters, input data, and a class conditional marginal density statistics deck.

Magnetospheric whistler ducts observed by ISIS satellites

The latitudinal width of the magnetospheric whistler duct has been estimated by the first and final invariant latitudes of whistler echoes and the conservation of the magnetic flux for the centered dipole field, using 105 whistler echoes in ISIS VLF data received at Kashima, Japan for 1972-1973. The latitudinal distribution of whistler duct occurrence shows a maximum at invariant latitudes of 40-45 degrees near the maximum occurrence latitude of ground whistlers. The radial width of magnetospheric whistler duct in the geomagnetically equatorial plane increases with invariant latitude of the geomagnetic flux tube in which whistlers propagate.

Precipitation mapping with an airborne synthetic aperture imaging radar

Use of an airborne synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) of 3.1-cm wavelength for the detection and mapping of precipitation echoes is described. Difficulties in mapping related to the incoherence of the echoes are discussed; methods of increasing resolution by Doppler filtering are suggested. Observations made with a vertical side-looking SAR system flying above a stratiform storm were found to resemble vertical cross sections obtained with conventional radar showing snow streamers, the bright band and rain. However, the actual section sampled by the SAR after filtering for zero Doppler is shown to depend upon both the relative motion of the particles and the relative winds below the aircraft. Knowledge of the relative winds, deduced from Doppler spectrum variations, and of the particle fall speeds permits the generation of horizontal and vertical cross sections displaced from the aircraft's position.

Test of spectral/spatial classifier

The author has identified the following significant results. The supervised ECHO processor (which utilizes class statistics for object identification) successfully exploits the redundancy of states characteristic of sampled imagery of ground scenes to achieve better classification accuracy, reduce the number of classifications required, and reduce the variability of classification results. The nonsupervised ECHO processor (which identifies objects without the benefit of class statistics) successfully reduces the number of classifications required and the variability of the classification results.

ADRF experiments using near n.pi pulse strings

Adiabatic demagnetization (ADRF) can be achieved in a dipolar coupled nuclear spin system in solids by applying a string of short RF pulses and gradually modulating the pulse amplitudes or pulse angles. This letter reports an adiabatic inverse polarization effect in solids and a rotary spin echo phenomenon observed in liquids when the pulse angle is gradually changed across integral multiples of pi during a string of RF pulses. The RF pulse sequence used is illustrated along with the NMR signal from a CaF2 single crystal as observed between the RF pulses and the rotary spin echo signal observed in liquid C6F6 for n = 2. The observed effects are explained qualitatively on the basis of average Hamiltonian theory.

Radar studies of the Martian surface at centimeter wavelengths - The 1975 opposition

The Goldstone radar system was operated at wavelengths of 3.5 and 12.6 cm to probe the Martian surface during the 1975 opposition. Regions studied in detail by range-Doppler techniques are Syrtis Major, Sinus Meridiani, and the crater Schiaparelli. Average rms slopes of 1.6 and 1.1 deg were measured in Syrtis Major at 3.5 and 12.6 cm, respectively, while the average reflectivity was about 0.064 at both wavelengths. No wavelength dependence of surface roughness was seen in Sinus Meridiani, where rms surface slopes averaged 1.8 deg and the reflectivity was about 0.08. The regions around Schiaparelli were probed at a 12.6-cm wavelength. The echo from the bottom of the crater was undetectable. Operating at 3.5 cm during May and June of 1976, 149 CW echo spectra were obtained near latitude 18 deg, sampling most longitudes including the early Viking landing sites. The average total radar cross section is 4.8% of the geometrical cross section. The diffuse component was estimated to be 1.9%, leaving 2.9% to the average quasi-specular component. The average rms slope is 4.1 deg.

Definition of mutually optimum NDI and proof test criteria for 2219 aluminum pressure vessels. Volume 3: Applications to rail defect evaluation

The technique for inspection of railroad rails containing transverse fissure defects was discussed. Both pulse-echo and pitch-catch inspection techniques were used. The pulse-echo technique results suggest that a multiple-scan approach using varying angles of inclination, three-surface scanning, and dual-direction traversing may offer promise of characterization of transverse defects. Because each scan is likely to produce a reflection indicating only a portion of the defect, summing of the individual reflections must be used to obtain a reasonably complete characterization of the defect. The ability of the collimated pitch-catch technique to detect relatively small amounts of flaw growth was shown. The method has a problem in characterizing the portions of the defect near the top surface or web intersection. The work performed was a preliminary evaluation of the prospects for automated mapping of rail flaws.

The Urbana coherent-scatter radar: Synthesis and first results

A coherent scatter radar system was synthesized and several hundred hours of echo power and line of sight velocity data obtained. The coherent scatter radar utilizes a diode array and components from meteor radar. The receiving system permits a time resolution of one minute in the data. Echo power from the D region shows a high degree of variability from day to day. Examples of changes in power level at shorter time scales are observed. Velocity data show the existence of gravity waves and occasionally exhibit vertical standing wave characteristics.

On cumulus mergers

A study of cumulus mergers for three undisturbed untreated days in the summer of 1973 is reported. Mergers produce more than an order of magnitude more rain than unmerged echoes, while mergers of mergers produce still an order of magnitude more rain. Duration, echo area, and rain depths are also compared for merged and unmerged systems, and each day is analyzed individually, indicating a correlation between organization and rain amount. The relevance of mergers to hydrology, weather modification, and the large-scale impacts of convective clouds is discussed.

High-altitude resolution stratospheric measurements with the Arecibo 430-MHz radar

Instrumental modification at the Arecibo Observatory are described, which make possible a resolution of 150 m, the maximum allowed by the transmitter bandwidth. Attention is given to digital decoding, the radar controller, and the fact that a complementary coded pulse scheme generating no pulse side lobes has been used for the first time. It is noted that power spectra of the signals corresponding to 256 altitudes are evaluated on line by means of an array processor. A profile of the E-W component of the wind as a function of altitude has been observed, as well as the discrete layered structure of turbulence, especially at higher altitudes; in addition, the maximum range at which an echo has been detected is about 31 km. The results obtained show the importance for stratospheric studies of high resolution when using radar to obtain wind information from the Doppler shift of turbulence echoes.

Rocket study of auroral processes

Abstracts are presented of previously published reports analyzing data from three Echo 3 rocket flights. Particle experiments designed for the Terrier-Malmute flight, the Echo 5 flight, and the Norwegian Corbier Ferdinand 50 flight are described and their flight performance evaluated. Theoretical studies on auroral particle precipitation are reviewed according to observations made in three regions of space: (1) the region accessible to rockets and low altitude satellites (few hundred to a few thousand kilometers); (2) the region extending from 4000 to 8000 km (S3-3 satellite range); and (3) near the equatorial plane (geosynchronous satellite measurements). Questions raised about auroral arc formation are considered.

Determination of spacecraft attitude using synthetic aperture radar data

A method has been developed for precise sensor platform attitude determination which exploits the availability of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors on future planned NASA earth orbiting spacecraft. Using the ephemeris along with data on planet shape and rotation, the relative motion between sensor and target area and therefore the Doppler frequency shift in the returned echo data is determined. Equations have been developed that relate the Doppler shift to the antenna attitude. The method is tested by comparing attitude predictions from SEASAT SAR digital echo data with available conventionally determined SEASAT attitude information.

Preliminary results of the study of lightning location relative to storm structure and dynamics

Lightning is being studied relative to storm structure using a VHF space-time discharge mapping system, radar, a cloud-to-ground flash locator, acoustic reconstruction of thunder, and other instrumentation. The horizontal discharge processes within the cloud generally propagate at speeds of 10,000-100,000 m/s. Horizontal extents of lightning were found up to 90 km. In an analysis of a limited number of flashes, lightning occurred in or near regions of high cyclonic shear. Positive cloud-to-ground flashes have been observed emanating from several identifiable regions of severe storms. Lightning echoes observed with 10-cm radar generally are 10-25 dB greater than the largest precipitation echo in the storm.

Radar investigation of asteroids

The dual polarization CW radar system which permits simultaneous reception in the same rotational sense of circular polarization as transmitted (i.e., the "SC" sense) and in the opposite ("OC") sense, was used to observe five previously unobserved asteroids: 2 Pallas, 8 Flora, 22 Kalliope, 132 Aethra, and 471 Papagena. Echoes from Pallas and Flora were easily detected in the OC sense on each of several nights. Weighted mean echo power spectra also show marginally significant responses in the SC sense. An approximately 4.5 standard deviation signal was obtained for Aethra. The Doppler shift of the peak is about 10 Hz higher than that predicted from the a priori trial ephemeris. Calculations are performed to determine whether this frequency offset can be reconciled dynamically with optical positions reported for Aethra.

Comet Encke - Radar detection of nucleus

The nucleus of the periodic comet Encke was detected in November 1980 with the Arecibo Observatory's radar system (wavelength, 12.6 cm). The echoes in the one sense of circular polarization received imply a radar cross section of 1.1 + or - 0.7 sq km. The estimated bandwidth of these echoes combined with an estimate of the rotation vector of Encke yields a radius for the nucleus of 1.5 +2.3 or -1.0. The uncertainties given are dependent primarily on the range of models considered for the comet and for the manner in which its nucleus backscatters radio waves. Should this range prove inadequate, the true value of the radius of the nucleus might lie outside the limits given.

ISEE 1 observations of VLF line radiation in the earth's magnetosphere

VLF line radiation in the magnetosphere is analyzed in an attempt to clarify the role of radiation from electric power lines in magnetospheric wave-particle interactions. Observations were made by the ISEE 1 satellite from October 1977 through August 1979 between L = 2 and L = 8 and 50 to 110 deg W longitude, a region encompassing the magnetic field lines linking the Eights, Siple and Roberval stations and in which VLF chorus activity had been linked to power line radiation. Line radiation was detected on 5 of 90 orbits, in all cases at frequencies below 4 kHz. The one event with a high S/N ratio exhibited lines changing frequency at rates from 22 to 6 Hz/min over a 9-min period. The radiation was detected at a time when whistler mode echoing was quite pronounced on lower L shells, and thus may have been a scattered component of line radiation echoing between hemispheres. It is concluded that very little of the background VLF wave energy in the outer magnetosphere is contained in line radiation, although the catalytic role of line radiation in controlling wave-particle interactions remains to be assessed.
