Soil mechanics surface sampler - Lunar surface test and results

After the success of Surveyor I in meeting the objectives of the engineering flight series, selection from among candidate experiments led to the inclusion of the Soil Mechanics Surface Sampler (SMSS) on the payload. Though originally planned for later Surveyors, the SMSS design was modified to fit the reduced telemetry and commanding capability of the earlier spacecraft. These modifications included removal of the strain-, acceleration-, and position-measuring systems originally planned, and incorporation of a means for measuring current drawn by the motors during operation. A description of the modified device, its performance on Surveyor III, and some conclusions regarding the lunar surface material drawn from the experiment are presented.

Metastable atom probe for measuring electron beam density profiles

Metastable atom probe was developed for measuring current density in electron beam as function of two arbitrary coordinates, with spatial resolution better than 0.5 mm. Probe shows effects of space charge, magnetic fields, and other factors which influence electron current density, but operates with such low beam densities that introduced perturbation is very small.

Some major results of the Fourth Annual Conference on Effects of Lithium Doping on Silicon Solar Cells

Lithium doped silicon solar cells having dimensions as large as 12 sq cm are now possible, due to significantly improved boron-diffusion techniques. A large increase was observed in the short circuit current measured in tungsten light for cells that were fabricated using the improved diffusion techniques as compared with previous cells, indicating a preservation of minority carrier diffusion length in the base region of the former cells. Sintering of the contacts of lithium doped cells fabricated from Lopex silicon resulted in large increases in maximum power, mostly due to an open circuit voltage improvement, over non-sintered cells. Efficiencies as high as 12.8% were observed, with the average efficiency being about 11.9%.

Microelectronic fabrication of superconducting devices and circuits

It is expected that thin-film superconductors can be used as detectors or sources of infrared and microwave radiation, as magnetometers, as voltage standards, and for voltage and current measurements, for electronic signal processing, and in digital circuitry.

The hydrogen sulfide emissions abatement program at the Geysers Geothermal Power Plant

The scope of the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) abatement program at The Geysers Geothermal Power Plant and the measures currently under way to reduce these emissions are discussed. The Geysers steam averages 223 ppm H2S by weight and after passing through the turbines leaves the plant both through the gas ejector system and by air-stripping in the cooling towers. The sulfide dissolved in the cooling water is controlled by the use of an oxidation catalyst such as an iron salt. The H2S in the low Btu ejector off gases may be burned to sulfur dioxide and scrubbed directly into the circulating water and reinjected into the steam field with the excess condensate. Details are included concerning the disposal of the impure sulfur, design requirements for retrofitting existing plants and modified plant operating procedures. Discussion of future research aimed at improving the H2S abatement system is also included.

Evaluation of ERTS-1 data for certain hydrological uses

The author has identified the following significant results. ERTS-1 MSS data have been used in a variety of hydrologic research including snow-extent mapping; studies of snowmelt, snowmelt runoff, spectral reflectance of snow for assessing snowpack conditions, and snow albedo; lake ice formation, breakup, and migration; lake current measurements; multispectral studies of lake ice; and flood studies. MSS sensing of soil moisture over a well-vegetated test site was unsuccessfully attempted. Although a powerful research tool, ERTS-1 has very limited use as an operational system for hydrologic communities because of its 18-day revisit cycle and its lack of a quick look capability.

The 15 cm mercury ion thruster research 1975

Doubly charged ion current measurements in the beam of a SERT II thruster are shown to introduce corrections which bring its calculated thrust into close agreement with that measured during flight testing. A theoretical model of doubly charged ion production and loss in mercury electron bombardment thrusters is discussed and is shown to yield doubly-to-singly charged ion density ratios that agree with experimental measurements obtained on a 15 cm diameter thruster over a range of operating conditions. Single cusp magnetic field thruster operation is discussed and measured ion beam profiles, performance data, doubly charged ion densities, and discharge plasma characteristics are presented for a range of operating conditions and thruster geometries. Variations in the characteristics of this thruster are compared to those observed in the divergent field thruster and the cusped field thruster is shown to yield flatter ion beam profiles at about the same discharge power and propellant utilization operating point. An ion optics test program is described and the measured effects of grid system dimensions on ion beamlet half angle and diameter are examined. The effectiveness of hollow cathode startup using a thermionically emitting filament within the cathode is examined over a range of mercury flow rates and compared to results obtained with a high voltage tickler startup technique. Results of cathode plasma property measurement tests conducted within the cathode are presented.

Gate-controlled-diodes in silicon-on-sapphire: A computer simulation

The computer simulation of the electrical behavior of a Gate-Controlled Diode (GCD) fabricated in Silicon-On-Sapphire (SOS) was described. A procedure for determining lifetime profiles from capacitance and reverse current measurements on the GCD was established. Chapter 1 discusses the SOS structure and points out the need of lifetime profiles to assist in device design for GCD's and bipolar transistors. Chapter 2 presents the one-dimensional analytical formula for electrostatic analysis of the SOS-GCD which are useful for data interpretation and setting boundary conditions on a simplified two-dimensional analysis. Chapter 3 gives the results of a two-dimensional analysis which treats the field as one-dimensional until the silicon film is depleted and the field penetrates the sapphire substrate. Chapter 4 describes a more complete two-dimensional model and gives results of programs implementing the model.

Storm-associated variations of equatorially mirroring ring current protons, 1-800 keV, at constant first adiabatic invariant

Explorer 45 observations of ring current protons mirroring near the equator, 1-800 keV, are presented at constant first adiabatic invariant mu throughout the period of the December 17, 1971, geomagnetic storm. The parameter mu is obtained from simultaneous magnetic field and particle observations. Particle deceleration in response to the storm time magnetic field decrease causes ring current measurements viewed at constant energy to underestimate the storm time increase in proton intensities at energies not exceeding 200 keV. This adiabatic deceleration also accounts for the large flux decreases observed at energies above 200 keV during the storm, in contradiction with previous results (Soraas and Davis, 1968) obtained using a model for the storm time magnetic field.

Superconductivity in sputtered CuMO6S8

Samples were prepared by melting the metals, followed by annealing to various temperatures. The result was a structurally weak material. Sputtered films on sapphire substrates were prepared and studied. The substrates give the films mechanical strength and permit easy attachment of electrical leads. Materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, electrical resistance vs. temperature, and critical current measurements. Some of the results on CuMo6S8 are presented.

Magnetic pulsations as a probe of the interplanetary magnetic field - A test of the Borok B index

A magnetic pulsation index based on the periods of Pc 2-4 pulsations as recorded in earth current measurements at the Borok Geophysical Observatory has been claimed to be a measure of the interplanetary field. Tests of this index for the period 1972 to June 1974 show only a 27% success rate. However, a simple recalibration of the index improves the success rate to 51%. The success of the index indicates that the source of many terrestrial magnetic pulsations is external to the magnetosphere.
