CBRN Situational Awareness Tools for the Modern Age

CBRN Situational awareness (SA) should be a key operational requirement in the CNI area of discussion, not only for the “boots-on-the-ground” warfighter, but at a strategic level. For example, maneuver plans will need to be developed for contamination avoidance and battlefield survivability. Large datasets from instruments dispersed across the battlefield will thus need to be collected and processed into a holistic assessment of the radiological hazard. From there, hazard maps then must be distributed at the tactical level, all while continuing to effectively engage a peer adversary. This vision represents a network of sensors, software tools, data processing algorithms, communications suites, and common operational picture (COP) platforms working in concert to inform warfighters and command echelons alike of evolving nuclear and radiological hazards. This complex system-of-systems and the ultimate goal of effective engagement in a nuclear or radiological-hazard battlefield can be achieved through pursuit of improvement in collaborative SA tools.

Manufacturing control systems and logic for prognosis of defects in composite materials

Presented are manufacturing control systems for composite-material structures, methods for assembling/operating such systems, and transfer molding techniques for predicting and ameliorating void conditions in fiber-reinforced polymer panels. A method for forming a composite-material construction includes receiving a start signal indicating a fiber-based preform is inside a mold cavity, and transmitting a command signal to inject pressurized resin into the mold to induce resin flow within the mold cavity and impregnate the fiber-based preform. An electronic controller receives, from a distributed array of sensors attached to the mold, signals indicative of pressure and/or temperature at discrete locations on an interior face of the mold cavity. The controller determines a measurement deviation between a calibrated baseline value and the pressure and/or temperature values for each of the discrete locations. If any one of the respective measurement deviations exceeds a calibrated threshold, a void signal is generated to flag a detected void condition.

Virtual synchronous generator system and method with virtual inertia control

A virtual synchronous generator device disclosed. The device includes an inverter and inverter controller having a power control portion, a power reserve portion, a power point tracking control portion, and a virtual inertia control portion. The power reserve portion determines an amount of power to be reserved and sends a signal, indicative of the determined amount of power to the power point tracking controller. The power point tracking controller determines a power point that is less than a MPP, and provides a signal to the power control portion indicative of the determined power point. The inertia control portion determines a virtual inertia and provides a signal indicative of the virtual inertia to the power control portion. The power control portion provides a power control signal to the inverter based on the power point tracking signal and the inertia command signal.

Software classification using phylogenetic techniques

Software, such as malware, may be classified using phylogenetic techniques. An evolutionary history of a representative set of software programs may be reconstructed to generate a reference phylogeny. Dynamic traces of the representative software programs may be obtained. The dynamic traces may include time-ordered sequences of execution commands extracted from running software binaries. Metrics may be developed using the dynamic traces. One or more unknown software programs may then be classified against the reference phylogeny using the metrics developed using the dynamic traces of the representative set of software programs.

Deploying Software-Defined Networking in Operational Technology Environments

Software Defined Networking for Operational Technologies, referred to as OT-SDN, is a leading technology to secure critical infrastructure and command and control (C2) systems. As the name implies, OT-SDN networks are programmable, which allows system owners to utilize the characteristics of their physical process to inform the security of their network. There are best practices for deploying OT-SDN into an environment, whether it is all at once or over time (hybrid) that the network is converted to SDN technologies. Through the development of data mining tools and standardized process control, OT-SDN can be deployed reliably. These tools will minimize or eliminate any communication failures during the transition and provide the network owner with complete documentation of their environment. This documentation could enable or facilitate the network owner to pass any audits or policy checks (Authority to Operate) before being allowed to utilize the OT-SDN infrastructure.

Persistent Engagement and the Private Sector

The concepts of “persistent engagement” and “defend forward” signify a shift in how the U.S. employs its military cyber capabilities. These new concepts reorient United States Cyber Command from a reactive, response force to a proactive force with continuous engagement that operates outside U.S. military networks to discover and expose adversary activity as well as execute actions before they harm U.S. national interests. Persistent engagement can form the basis for a whole-of-nation cyber strategy if the private sector is a central player rather than an afterthought.

Systems and methods for advanced grid integration of distributed generators and energy resources

A circuit for a smart photovoltaic (PV) inverter system and the smart PV inverter system are described. The circuit includes one or more strings coupled to an electrical load. Each of the one or more strings further includes one or more string members coupled in series, where each of the one or more string members comprises a voltage source and an inverter. The circuit also includes a controller to receive an output from an operator controller and control the strings, where the controller is configured to control the strings by providing a function command to a first string member of each of the one or more strings based on the output from the operator controller. The voltage source may also receive an output from an energy output device. Further, the inverter may be configured to convert the output of energy output device into an energy source of electrical load.

Coordinated Optimal Control of PV Inverters and HVAC Loads in Distribution Systems

The increasing integration of distributed energy resources (DERs), such as photovoltaics (PVs) and smart buildings into distribution systems complicate power system operation and controls. This paper proposes a coordinated optimal control strategy for PV inverters and Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) loads in smart buildings to minimize the total network loss in a distribution system. For the HVAC units, we enforce minimum on and off time constraints to avoid frequent switching that can degrade the unit. The proposed control will dispatch optimal control signals of active and reactive power to PV inverters and on/off commands to HVAC units while maintaining the nodal voltage within a secure range and the temperature of HVAC units at a comfort level. The simulation results on a modified IEEE 33-node distribution system demonstrate that the proposed coordinated control scheme can reduce the network loss.

Space vehicle with customizable payload and docking station

A “black box” space vehicle solution may allow a payload developer to define the mission space and provide mission hardware within a predetermined volume and with predetermined connectivity. Components such as the power module, radios and boards, attitude determination and control system (ADCS), command and data handling (C&DH), etc. may all be provided as part of a “stock” (i.e., core) space vehicle. The payload provided by the payload developer may be plugged into the space vehicle payload section, tested, and launched without custom development of core space vehicle components by the payload developer. A docking station may facilitate convenient development and testing of the space vehicle while reducing handling thereof.

Neural interface methods and apparatus to provide artificial sensory capabilities to a subject

Embodiments of neural interfaces according to the present invention comprise sensor modules for sensing environmental attributes beyond the natural sensory capability of a subject, and communicating the attributes wirelessly to an external (ex-vivo) portable module attached to the subject. The ex-vivo module encodes and communicates the attributes via a transcutaneous inductively coupled link to an internal (in-vivo) module implanted within the subject. The in-vivo module converts the attribute information into electrical neural stimuli that are delivered to a peripheral nerve bundle within the subject, via an implanted electrode. Methods and apparatus according to the invention incorporate implantable batteries to power the in-vivo module allowing for transcutaneous bidirectional communication of low voltage (e.g. on the order of 5 volts) encoded signals as stimuli commands and neural responses, in a robust, low-error rate, communication channel with minimal effects to the subjects' skin.

Science Federation Emulation Testbed: Demonstration of VFSIE Functionalities

The Virtual Federated Science Instrument Environment (VFSIE) is a digital twin of a federated infrastructure of multiple sites with science instruments and computing systems that are geographically dispersed. It emulates the federation using containers and virtual hosts (vhosts) connected over local and wide-area networks for the main purpose of supporting the development and testing of science workflows and software stacks, which will subsequently transition to the physical infrastructure. In this demo, we present VFSIE of a four sites scenario and illustrate the following use cases: (i) execution of federation stack components that expose resources to enable a science user to execute workflows, (ii) execution of remote control commands of beam-line instruments to collect measurements and position the sensor, and (iii) remote execution and access of Jupyter Notebook for tomographic image computations

Resin transfer molding systems and control logic for manufacturing fiber-reinforced composite parts

Presented are manufacturing control systems for fabricating composite-material structures, methods for making/operating such systems, and resin transfer molding techniques for ameliorating race-tracking effects in fiber-reinforced polymer panels. A method for forming a composite-material construction includes confirming, via a system electronic control unit (ECU), that a fiber-based preform is placed in a mold cavity and that opposing mold segments of the molding apparatus are sealed together. A filler, such as a compressible bladder, a cluster of spring-biased pins, or a spray-chopped fiber bed, is introduced into a void between the fiber-based preform and a tool face of one mold segment to thereby eliminate an unwanted resin race track. The system ECU commands a resin pump to inject resin through a primary gate of the molding apparatus and into the mold cavity to thereby impregnate the fiber-based preform with the resin. One or more vents operate to evacuate air from the mold.

Studying Performance Portability of LAMMPS across Diverse GPU-based Platforms

The molecular dynamics simulation software, LAMMPS, utilizes the Kokkos acceleration library to port computation to a diverse set of architectures including those based on GPU accelerators. In addition to Kokkos, LAMMPS contains a vast code base that leverages the CUDA application programming interface using library functions such as cuFFT, CUDA’s fast-fourier transform (FFT) library, and, more recently, also support for AMD’s Heterogeneous Interface for Portability (HIP) that is rapidly growing. While preparing LAMMPS tests for the AMD GPU-based test system precursors to Frontier, we investigated several strategies for accelerating LAMMPS on AMD GPUs, using the AMD Instinct MI100 and MI250X. In this work, we integrated the HIP FFT library, hipFFT, into the particle-particle particle-mesh (PPPM) long-range solver, which allowed the porting of PPPM calculations to the GPUs. Kokkos behavior on the MI100 and MI250X was also investigated through the package kokkos command of LAMMPS, targeting com- munication, memory usage, and particle grid decomposition. The Tersoff, Reax, Lennard-Jones (LJ), EAM, Granular, and PPPM potentials were investigated in this effort, and results from these experiments are provided. The selected potentials were run on Spock (AMD Instinct MI100), Crusher (AMD Instinct MI250X), AFW HPC11 (NVIDIA A100) and Summit (NVIDIA V100), for comparison. Operational roofline models were constructed and analyzed for the Tersoff, Reax, and Lennard-Jones potentials on Crusher and Summit.

Methods and system for a battery

Systems and methods for operating a redox flow battery system may include switching the redox flow battery system to an idle mode, wherein the idle mode includes operation of the redox flow battery system outside of a charging mode and outside of a discharge mode; in response to switching to the idle mode, repeatedly cycling operation of an electrolyte pump between an idling threshold flow rate less than a charging threshold flow rate and a deactivation threshold flow rate; and in response to switching to the charging mode, maintaining operation of the electrolyte pump at the charging threshold flow rate greater than the idling threshold flow rate. In this way, a responsiveness of the redox flow battery system to charging and discharging commands can be maintained while in idle, while reducing parasitic pumping losses due to pumping and heating, and reducing shunt current losses.
