Two-way coherent tracking systems.

Review of some results pertinent to the development of nonlinear theory on two-way coherent tracking systems. In particular, the model of cascaded systems is presented, and approximations to steady state probability density functions of the two-way system phase and Doppler error are developed. From these, certain numerical results required in the design and planning of these systems are derived.

Simulation of superposed coherent and chaotic radiation of arbitrary spectral shape.

A simulation technique is described and utilized to generate superposed coherent and chaotic (thermal) radiation of arbitrary spectral shape. The statistical properties of a simulated radiation field with a Lorentzian spectral density are investigated with a photoelectron counting experiment. The experimental photocount distribution and normalized mth-order factorial moments are compared to theory and verify that the simulated radiation field, an appropriately modulated laser beam, has the expected statistical properties. The concept described indicates that one may, in principle, generate a thermal source of comparable intensity to that of a laser, arbitrary spectral shape, and bandwidth.

Ion-molecule collision frequencies in gases determined by phase coherent pulsed ICR.

The transient method considered is analogous to similar phase coherence experiments performed in NMR and plasma physics. Using a pulsed ion cyclotron resonance (ICR) spectrometer equipped with a trapped ion analyzer cell, gaseous ions are formed by a pulse of an electron beam and then trapped in the cell by the combined effects of the magnetic and electrostatic fields. The results obtained in the experiments indicate that the classical mobility treatment of Wannier (1953) is helpful in the understanding of collision frequencies under the considered conditions.

A compact and low power coherent optical system for on-board spacecraft data processing.

Discussion of the design and performance of a compact low-power coherent optical data processing system suitable for spacecraft onboard applications. The system is a modification of the conventional optical data processing system in which a much more efficient solid state GaAs laser is substituted for the bulky and inferior He-Ne laser and paraboloidal mirror segments are substituted for the axially symmetric optical system of the conventional data processing system. Theoretical considerations are given to substantiate the improvement of performance aimed at in the modified system. Preliminary tests of the modified design being in progress indicate that a low power, rugged, small size optical system, capable of onboard spacecraft data processing, can be constructed by using off-axis paraboloidal mirror segments.-

Populating excited states of incoherent atoms using coherent light.

Study of the influence of various experimental parameters on the interaction between a multimode high-intensity laser light and the absorbing atoms of an atomic gas. Using a simplified treatment of line broadening which does not include correlations between momentum-changing collisions and pressure-broadening collisions, expressions are obtained that show the effect of pressure, laser-pulse length, and intensity on the excitation. It is found that, as long as the dephasing time of the atomic system is sufficiently short, the interaction reduces to a two-body collision between the atoms and photons, where coherence effects do not occur.

Transfer of resonance-line radiation in differentially expanding atmospheres. II - Analytic solution for the case of coherence in the frame of the fluid.

Derivation of an exact solution for the problem of line transfer by resonant scattering (assumed coherent in the fluid frame) in a differentially expanding atmosphere. The probabilistic method developed is a generalization of the method of addition of layers plus a decomposition of the radiation field into partial radiation fields due to those photons that scatter exactly n times before escaping (n = 0, 1, 2, 3,

Coherence-length extender

Holograms of large objects may be formed by using several coherent low-intensity laser sources. If several low intensity laser sources are available, they can be applied simultaneously. Each source is then used to establish one object beam and one reference beam whose path lengths are equal, recording a small portion of the total object.

Coherent Optical Processing of Phased Array Radar Data

Interfacing a coherent optical processor, which utilizes an electron-beam addressed, potassium dideuterium phosphate (KDP) crystal modulator, with a linear phased array is studied. An abbreviated development of typical radar signals from a linear array is included. A plan for formating the spatial modulator with linear array signals is presented. The theoretical expectations which include target angle and Doppler are derived. A simulated set of M signals which are typical of a linear array of M elements was devised. This set of signals was used to modulate the wave front of collimated laser light via the KDP crystal according to the format presented.

Signal-to-noise ratios in coherent soft limiters

Expressions for the output signal-to-noise power ratio of a bandpass soft limiter followed by a coherent detection device are presented and discussed. It is found that a significant improvement in the output signal-to-noise ratio at low input SNRs can be achieved by such soft limiters as compared to hard limiters. This indicates that the soft limiter may be of some use in the area of threshold extension. Approximation methods for determining output signal-to-noise spectral densities are also presented.

Single step detection of blurred images in a coherent optical processor.

Two important operations that can be performed by coherent optical processing systems are image detection and image restoration. These operations require complex spatial filters, and if both operations are to be performed, cascaded processing stages employing two separate spatial filters are usually needed. Spatial filters are described that will perform in a single step both operations simultaneously, thus eliminating the need for extra processing stages while providing the advantages of higher efficiency and smaller space requirements. The filters are characterized by their simplicity and are easily fabricated using conventional techniques. Experimental results are presented.

The optical pumping of alkali atoms using coherent radiation from semi-conductor injection lasers and incoherent radiation from resonance lamps

An experimental study for creating population differences in the ground states of alkali atoms (Cesium 133) is presented. Studies made on GaAs-junction lasers and the achievement of population inversions among the hyperfine levels in the ground state of Cs 133 by optically pumping it with radiation from a GaAs diode laser. Laser output was used to monitor the populations in the ground state hyperfine levels as well as to perform the hyperfine pumping. A GaAs laser operated at about 77 K was used to scan the 8521 A line of Cs 133. Experiments were performed both with neon-filled and with paraflint-coated cells containing the cesium vapor. Investigations were also made for the development of the triple resonance coherent pulse technique and for the detection of microwave induced hyperfine trasistions by destroying the phase relationships produced by a radio frequency pulse. A pulsed cesium resonance lamp developed, and the lamp showed clean and reproducible switching characteristics.

Investigation of the large scale coherent structure in a jet and its relevance to jet noise

A study was conducted to determine the causes of aircraft noise in large jet aircraft. It was determined that jet noise varies strongly with velocity and that significant pure tones are generated by rotor-stator interaction in the jet engines. An objective method for deducing the large eddy structure in a large jet is described. The provisions of lighthill's theory are analyzed and applied to investigating the nature of jet noise. There is considerable evidence that a large scale coherent structure exists in a jet and that this structure can play a major role in sound radiation. Mathematical models are developed to define the parameters of orthogonal decomposition, finite extent velocity field, homogeneous fields, and periodic velocity fields.

Feasibility of coherent X-ray production by X-ray pumping

It is suggested that coherent X-rays can be produced by inverting the electron population in a suitable target, such as Li, through irradiation with X-rays generated by fast electrons traversing an electromagnetic field (as in a storage ring). Conditions to be satisfied by target and radiation parameters are stated, and examples given.

Determination of atmospheric structure function by using a single coherent detector

The wave structure function associated with atmospheric turbulence is important in the effective design of telescopes for coherent optical receivers. This paper describes a method of measurement of the wave structure function by employing an already existing optical receiver. The aperture of this receiver's telescope is masked by an opaque screen with two small holes. It is then shown that when the incident beam obeys Gaussian statistics, the receiver's A.M. output can be simply related to the wave structure function of the incident beam.

On the distribution of source coherency in subsonic jets

Recent experimental and theoretical studies on the sources of far field noise generated by subsonic circular jets have given convincing indications that a coherent wave motion does exist in the potential core of subsonic jets. Cross-covariance measurements using single and cross hot-wire probes in the potential core as well as the turbulent mixing region and microphone measurements in the far field have resulted in cross-correlation coefficients of sufficiently high magnitudes to indicate that significant, if not dominant, noise sources may be located in the potential core. The paper presents the analytical and experimental results of this research.
