Search for heavy Majorana or Dirac neutrinos and right-handed $W$ gauge bosons in final states with charged leptons and jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for heavy right-handed Majorana or Dirac neutrinos N R and heavy right-handed gauge bosons W R is performed in events with energetic electrons or muons, with the same or opposite electric charge, and energetic jets. The search is carried out separately for topologies of clearly separated final-state products (“resolved” channel) and topologies with boosted final states with hadronic and/or leptonic products partially overlapping and reconstructed as a large-radius jet (“boosted” channel). The events are selected from pp collision data at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 collected by the ATLAS detector at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. No significant deviations from the Standard Model predictions are observed. The results are interpreted within the theoretical framework of a left-right symmetric model, and lower limits are set on masses in the heavy right handed W R boson and N R plane. The excluded region extends to about m(W R ) = 6.4 TeV for both Majorana and Dirac N R neutrinos at m(N R ) < 1 TeV. N R with masses of less than 3.5 (3.6) TeV are excluded in the electron (muon) channel at m(W R ) = 4.8 TeV for the Majorana neutrinos, and lim its of m(N R ) up to 3.6 TeV for m(W R ) = 5.2 (5.0) TeV in the electron (muon) channel are set for the Dirac neutrinos. These constitute the most stringent exclusion limits to date for the model considered.

Search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson to a pair of pseudoscalars in the $μμ bb$ and $ττ bb$ final states

A search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson (H) with a mass of 125 GeV to a pair of light pseudoscalars a 1 is performed in final states where one pseudoscalar decays to two quarks and the other to a pair of muons or leptons. A data sample of proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 recorded with the CMS detector is analyzed. No statistically significant excess is observed over the standard model backgrounds. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level (CL) on the Higgs boson branching fraction to μ μ b b and to τ τ b b via a pair of a 1 s. The limits depend on the pseudoscalar mass m a 1 and are observed to be in the range (0.17–3.3) x 10 -4 and (1.7–7.7) x 10 -2 in the μ μ b b and τ τ b b final states, respectively. In the framework of models with two Higgs doublets and a complex scalar singlet (2HDM+S), the results of the two final states are combined to determine upper limits on the branching fraction ${\mathcal {B}}(\text {H} \rightarrow \text {a}_{1} \text {a}_{1} \rightarrow \ell \ell \text{ b } \text{ b})$ at 95% CL, with ℓ being a muon or a τ lepton. For different types of 2HDM+S, upper bounds on the branching fraction ${\mathcal {B}}(\text {H} \rightarrow \text {a}_{1} \text {a}_{1} )$ are extracted from the combination of the two channels. In most of the Type II 2HDM+S parameter space ${\mathcal {B}}(\text {H} \rightarrow \text {a}_{1} \text {a}_{1} )$, values above 0.23 are excluded at 95% CL for m a 1 values between 15 and 60 GeV.

Precise measurements of W - and Z -boson transverse momentum spectra with the ATLAS detector using pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 5.02$ TeV and 13 TeV

This paper describes measurements of the transverse momentum spectra of W and Z bosons produced in proton–proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV and $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Measurements are performed in the electron and muon channels, W → $\ell$$v$ and Z → $\ell$$\ell$ ($\ell$ = e or μ), and for W events further separated by charge. The data were collected in 2017 and 2018, in dedicated runs with reduced instantaneous luminosity, and correspond to 255 and 338 pb -1 at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV and 13 TeV, respectively. These conditions optimise the reconstruction of the W-boson transverse momentum. The distributions observed in the electron and muon channels are unfolded, combined, and compared to QCD calculations based on parton shower Monte Carlo event generators and analytical resummation. The description of the transverse momentum distributions by Monte Carlo event generators is imperfect and shows significant differences largely common to W - , W + and Z production. The agreement is better at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV, especially for predictions that were tuned to Z production data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV. Higher-order, resummed predictions based on DYTurbo generally match the data best across the spectra. Distribution ratios are also presented and test the understanding of differences between the production processes.

Search for a light charged Higgs boson in $t \rightarrow H^{\pm } b$ decays, with $H^{\pm } \rightarrow cs$, in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}={13}\hbox { TeV}$ with the ATLAS detector

A search for a light charged Higgs boson produced in decays of the top quark, $t \rightarrow H^{\pm } b$ with $H^{\pm } \rightarrow cs$, is presented. This search targets the production of top-quark pairs $t\bar{t} \rightarrow WbH^{\pm } b$, with $W \rightarrow ℓv(ℓ = e, μ)$, resulting in a lepton-plus-jets final state characterised by an isolated electron or muon and at least four jets. The search exploits b-quark and c-quark identification techniques as well as multivariate methods to suppress the dominant $t\bar{t}$ background. The data analysed correspond to 140 fb -1 of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC between 2015 and 2018. Observed (expected) 95% confidence-level upper limits on the branching fraction $\mathscr{B}(t \rightarrow H^{\pm } b)$, assuming $\mathscr{B}(t \rightarrow Wb) + \mathscr{B}(t \rightarrow H^{\pm }(\rightarrow cs)b$, are set between 0.066% (0.077%) and 3.6% (2.3%) for a charged Higgs boson with a mass between 60 and 168 GeV.

Measurement of W±-boson differential cross-sections in proton–proton collisions with low pile-up data at s=5.02 TeV and 13TeV with the ATLAS detector

High precision single-differential W±$$W^\pm $$-boson production cross-sections as a function of electron or muon transverse momentum pT$$p_\textrm{T}$$ or their pseudorapity η$$\eta $$, as well as double-differential cross-sections as functions of these variables, are measured in proton–proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies s=5.02$$\sqrt{s}=5.02$$ TeV and 13 TeV. The W-boson charge asymmetry as a function of lepton η$$\eta $$ is also measured. The data, collected in dedicated runs at reduced instantaneous luminosity with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, correspond to integrated luminosities of 255 pb-1$$^{-1}$$ at 5.02 TeV and 338 pb-1$$^{-1}$$ at 13 TeV. The measurements are in agreement with Standard-Model predictions calculated at next-to-next-to-leading-order in the strong coupling constant αs$$\alpha _s$$ including transverse-momentum resummation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy using several parton distribution functions. The impact of the measured differential cross-sections as a function of lepton η$$\eta $$ on the determination of these functions is studied using a profiling technique.

Search for heavy resonances decaying into two Higgs bosons in the $\text {b}{\bar{\text {b}}} \tau ^{+} \tau ^{-}$ final state in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text {Te}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V}$

A search is presented for massive narrow-width resonances in the mass range of 1–4.5 TeV , decaying into pairs of Higgs bosons (HH). The search uses proton–proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC during 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 . The analysis targets final states where one Higgs boson decays into a pair of bottom quarks and the other into a pair of tau leptons, ${\text {X}} \rightarrow {\text {HH}} \rightarrow \text {b}{\bar{\text {b}}}\,\tau ^{+}\tau ^{-}$. It uses a single large radius jet to reconstruct the ${\text {H}} \rightarrow \text {b}{\bar{\text {b}}}$ decay, while the ${\text {H}} \rightarrow \tau ^{+}\tau ^{-}$ decay products can either be contained within a single large radius jet or appear as two isolated tau leptons. The observed data are consistent with standard model background expectations. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the production cross section for resonant HH production for masses between 1 and 4.5 TeV. This analysis sets the most sensitive limits to date on ${\text {X}} \rightarrow {\text {HH}} \rightarrow \text {b}\bar{\hbox {b}}\, \tau ^{+}\tau ^{-}$ decays in the mass range of 1.4–4.5 TeV.

SD-pair shell model: Vibrational and rotational limits in the interacting boson–fermion model for like-nucleon system

Typical features of the Bose–Fermi symmetries associated with [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] limits in the interacting boson model are described in the SD-pair shell model (SDPSM) framework for like-nucleon system. It is found that the limiting spectra associated with [Formula: see text] (vibrational) and [Formula: see text] (rotational) in the interacting boson–fermion model can be well reproduced in the SDPSM framework. It is shown that coupling of collective degree of freedom with the single-particle degree of freedom in the pairing interaction almost has no effect on the spectrum of odd-A system comparing to the adjacent even–even system, while the coupling of the collective degree of freedom with the single-particle degree of freedom in the quadrupole–quadrupole interaction results in the level splitting of several excited levels.

Higgs production via vector-boson fusion at the LHC

In this article, we summarise the recent experimental measurements and theoretical work on Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion at the LHC. Along with this, we provide state-of-the-art predictions at fixed order as well as with parton-shower corrections within the Standard Model at 13.6 TeV. The results are presented in the form of multi-differential distributions as well as in the Simplified Template Cross Section bins. All materials and outputs of this study are available on public repositories. Finally, following findings in the literature, recommendations are made to estimate theoretical uncertainties related to parton-shower corrections.

Approaching scalable VQE of interacting bosons with NISQ devices [Slides]

Scaling up variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) algorithms to practical applications utilizing quantum advantage with noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices is challenging. The expansive cost-function evaluation and demanding optimization quickly exhaust the precious quantum resource available on NISQ devices. In this work, we discuss the appropriate VQE strategy suitable for multi-site interacting boson systems, for example, the Holstein model and the Rabi lattice model. We investigate the cost-function setup and the optimization tactics to utilize the limited quantum resource efficiently. Our strategy illustrates that the scalable VQE algorithms of interacting bosons have a promising future.

Boson Fermion Nuclei And Structures Throughout The Periodic Table Of Elements: Monograph #8

A homologous structural pattern among nuclei that corresponds to the periodicity of the periodic table of elements has been identified. Schematic diagrams of boson fermion nuclei (BFN) are shown for nuclei throughout the periodic table of elements. Transition elements in the fourth, fifth, and sixth periods display bridges between the legs of the tetrahedral nuclear structure, occurring where the nuclear structure is sufficiently massive to create potential wells able to hold the nucleons in a fermion-pocket quantum system bridging the legs. These nuclei are not formed by buildup, as in stepwise nuclear fusion or nucleon capture, but by a process in which the nucleus has “fallen down” in mass during stellar nucleosynthesis from a higher A and Z, shedding nucleons and decaying radioactively to arrive at a lowest-energy-system, stable-boson-fermion nuclear structure.

Towards a combination of LHC and TeVatron W-boson mass measurements

In this note methodological and modelling considerations towards a combination of the ATLAS, CDF and D0 measurements of the W -boson mass are discussed. As they were performed at different moments in time, each measurement employed different assumptions for the modelling of W -boson production and decay, as well as different fits of the parton distribution functions of the proton (PDFs). Methods are presented to accurately evaluate the effect of PDFs and other modelling variations on existing measurements, allowing to extrapolate them to any PDF set and to evaluate the corresponding uncertainties. Based on this approach, the measurements can be corrected to a common modelling reference and to the same PDFs, and subsequently combined accounting for PDF correlations in a quantitative way.

Search for leptophobic bosons decaying into µµ, b jets, and MET with the CMS experiment

The standard model (SM) lacks a description for dark matter, which is implied by astrophysical observations to exist but has not yet been detected directly. An extension of the SM to include a leptophobic Z’ boson allows for the production of stable weakly interacting particles that offer dark matter candidates. Signatures of this interaction that can be detected by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider are mumu, b jets, and MET. As part of a sensitivity study, an examination of Z’ boson kinematics in the low Z’ mass range is presented along with event reconstruction methods and comparisons to ttbar and Drell-Yan backgrounds.

Crosstalk-Robust Quantum Control in Multimode Bosonic Systems

Universal control of multimode bosonic modes typically relies on a dispersively coupled transmon ancilla. However, its frequency undergoes a Stark shift that depends on the state of each coupled bosonic mode, leading to a frequency mismatch in the ancilla drive and ultimately reducing the fidelity of multimode gates

Model-Agnostic Exploration of the Mass Reach of Precision Higgs Boson Coupling Measurements

To understand the possibility for precision Higgs boson coupling measurements to access effects of very heavy new particles, I present five scenarios in which significant deviations in Higgs boson couplings are produced by new particles with multi-TeV masses. These scenarios indicate that such precision measurements provide opportunities to reach well beyond the capabilities of direct particle searches at the HL-LHC.

A measurement of the Higgs boson mass in the diphoton decay channel in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A measurement of the Higgs boson mass in the diphoton decay channel is performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data set recorded with the CMS detector between 2016 and 2018 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. A refined detector calibration and new analysis techniques are employed to improve the precision of the results compared to earlier measurements. The Higgs boson mass is measured to be $m_\mathrm{H}$ = 125.13 $\pm$ 0.15 GeV = 125.13 $\pm$ 0.10 (stat) $\pm$ 0.12 (syst) GeV. In addition, a combination with the mass measurement at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV in the diphoton final state is performed resulting in $m_\mathrm{H}$ = 125.06 $\pm$ 0.14 GeV = 125.06 $\pm$ 0.09 (stat) $\pm$ 0.11 (syst) GeV.

Looking for heavier weak bosons with DUMAND

One or more heavier weak bosons may coexist with the standard weak boson, a broad program may be laid out for a search for the heavier W's via change in the total cross section due to the additional propagator, a concomitant search, and a subsequent search for significant antimatter in the universe involving the same annihilation, but being independent of possible neutrino oscillations. The program is likely to require detectors sensitive to higher energies, such as acoustic detectors.

Theory of the spin-1 bosonic liquid metal - Equilibrium properties of liquid metallic deuterium

The theory of a two-component quantum fluid comprised of spin-1/2 fermions and nonzero spin bosons is examined. This system is of interest because it embodies a possible quantum liquid metallic phase of highly compressed deuterium. Bose condensation is assumed present and the two cases of nuclear-spin-polarized and -unpolarized systems are considered. A significant feature in the unpolarized case is the presence of a nonmagnetic mode with quadratic dispersion owing its existence to nonzero boson spin. The physical character of this mode is examined in detail within a Bogoliubov approach. The specific heat, bulk modulus, spin susceptibility, and thermal expansion are all determined. Striking contrasts in the specific heats and thermal-expansion coefficients of the liquid and corresponding normal solid metallic phase are predicted.
