Mode transitions and spoke structures in E × B Penning discharge

Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations in the (radial-azimuthal) plane perpendicular to the axial direction of a cylindrical $E$ x $B$ Penning discharge are presented. The low-pressure discharge is self-consistently supported by plasma ionization from the electron beam injected axially, along the direction of the external magnetic field. It is shown that with the increasing strength of the external magnetic field, the discharge undergoes a sequence of transitions between several azimuthal modes. Azimuthal m > 1 spiral arm structures are excited at low magnetic field values as plasma confinement improves and the radial density profile becomes peaked. With a larger field, spiral arms with m > 1 are replaced by the m = 1 spoke mode, most clearly seen in plasma density. A transition from spiral arms to the spoke regime occurs when the plasma potential in the center changes from weakly positive (or zero) to negative. Further increase in the magnetic field results in a well-developed m = 1 spoke mode with additional small-scale higher-frequency m > 1 structures inside and around the spoke. It is shown that while ionization and collisions affect some characteristics of the observed fluctuations, the basic features of the spoke and m > 1 spiral structure remained similar without ionization. The role of energy conservation in small-scale high-frequency modes and spoke dynamics is discussed. It is demonstrated that in regimes with the m = 1 spoke mode, additional m = 4 harmonics of the ion and electron fluxes to the wall appear due to the square boundary. The frequency of the m = 1 mode is weakly affected by the geometry of the boundary.

Magnetized liner inertial fusion platform development to assess performance scaling with drive parameters

Magnetized liner inertial fusion (MagLIF) experiments have demonstrated fusion-relevant ion temperatures up to 3.1 keV and thermonuclear production of up to 1.1 × 1013 deuterium–deuterium neutrons. This performance was enabled through platform development that provided increases in applied magnetic field, coupled preheat energy, and drive current. Advanced coil designs with internal reinforcement enabled an increase from 10 to 20 T. An improved laser pulse shape, beam smoothing, and thinner laser entrance foils increased preheat energy coupling from less than 1 to 2.3 kJ. A redesign of the final transmission line and load region increased peak load current from 16 to 20 MA. The wider range of input parameters was leveraged to study target performance trends with preheat energy, applied magnetic field, and peak load current. Ion temperature and neutron yield generally followed trends in two-dimensional clean Lasnex calculations. Stagnation performance improved with peak load current when other input parameters were also increased such that convergence was maintained. This dataset suggests that reducing convergence to less than 30 would improve predictability of target performance. Lasnex was used to identify a simulation-optimized scaling path, which suggests 10+ kJ of fusion yield is possible on the Z facility with achievable input parameters. This path also indicates >10 MJ could be generated through volume burn on a future facility with a path to high yield (>200 MJ) using cryogenic dense fuel layers. The newly developed MagLIF platform enables exploration of both this simulation optimized scaling path and a recently developed similarity-scaling path.

Analysis of the HAE activity in the TJ-II stellarator using a Landau closure model

The aim of this study is to analyze the stability of helical Alfvén eigenmodes (HAEs) in TJ-II discharges and the stabilizing effect of the energetic particles generated by the neutral beam injector (NBI) on pressure gradient-driven modes (PGDMs). HAE and PGDM stability is studied using the linear version of the gyro-fluid code FAR3d and the continuous structure by the STELLGAP code. First, Alfvén eigenmode (AE) and PGDM activity observed in the experiments is reproduced by the simulations, identifying unstable m/n = 4/7 − 2/3 and 7/12 − 5/8 HAEs triggered around ρ = 0.66 showing a frequency of 209 and 204 kHz, respectively, as well as 5/3 PGDM. Next, a parametric study is performed with respect to the thermal ion density and iota profile in the middle-outer plasma region to verify the robustness of the simulation results with respect to the uncertainty of experimental profiles. The analysis confirms that experimental uncertainty does not cause large deviations in the simulation results, showing the destabilization of the same HAEs for all the configurations tested. The simulations also indicate the decay of the 5/3 PGDM growth rate as the energetic particle (EP) population in the plasma increases, consistent with the experiment. Stability analysis of the n = 3, 7, 11, n = 5, 9, 13, n = 6, 10, 14, and n = 8, 12 helical families is performed with respect to the NBI operational regime for different EP energies, β as well as deposition profiles. The most unstable configuration is the radially localized on-axis NBI operation (stiff EP density profile gradients nearby the magnetic axis). Using the simulation model that reproduces the observed Alfvén activity, we extend the study to analyze NBI performance within a theoretical framework. It shows that increasing NBI voltage (which raises EP energy) leads to a degradation in NBI performance for a given power (related to EP β and their density). To achieve better NBI operation, higher voltage must be balanced with lower injection power, ensuring stable AEs while keeping the same EP β.
