Operating and Maintaining the JWST Cleanroom attached to JSC's Chamber A during preparations for the OTIS Cryogenic Thermal Vacuum Test

In order to maintain cleanliness during preparations for JWST’s OTIS (Optical Telescope Element-Integrated Science Instrument Module) Cryogenic Thermal Vacuum Test, a cleanroom was built that attached directly to the 60-year-old Chamber A. The cleanroom and chamber were outfitted with independent environmental control systems each providing ISO Class 71 air cleanliness. To maintain balanced, positive pressure in both the cleanroom and chamber volumes, a special control protocol was developed and successfully implemented. Dual back-up environmental control units (one each for the chamber and cleanroom) were installed just outside the building to provide environmental control redundancy due to a single source chilled water supply and weather threats. In addition, lack of a dedicated cleanroom airlock facilitating clean ingress and egress made it necessary to perform additional cleaning and packaging, as well as augment the uncontrolled truck lock space with small clean tents for pre-cleaning. Special procedures were developed to allow ingress of extra-large support equipment required for load testing of the cleanroom crane, installation of optical equipment in Chamber A and accommodation of the OTIS shipping container. A thorough bake-out and cleaning of Chamber A was also necessary to reduce volatiles from the shroud’s black thermal paint and to reduce particle fallout. Acrylic adhesive fracture discovered during early cryo-testing represented a significant challenge that was successfully mitigated prior to OTIS testing. A dedicated team of Contamination Control (CC) Technicians was specifically trained to clean support equipment and screen materials entering the cleanroom and chamber to ensure cleanliness and vacuum compatibility.

Nevada National Security Site Environmental Report 2021 with 2021 Environmental Report Attachment A: Site Description

This Nevada National Security Site Environmental Report (NNSSER) summarizes actions taken in 2021 to protect the environment and the public while achieving the NNSA/NFO mission goals. It is prepared for the public and our stakeholders in hopes that it is readily understandable and usable. It is a key component in our efforts to keep the public informed of environmental conditions at the NNSS and its support facilities in Las Vegas, Nevada. The accompanying Attachment A expands on the general description of the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) presented in the Introduction to the Nevada National Security Site Environmental Report 2021. Included are subsections that summarize the site’s geological, hydrological, climatological, and ecological settings and the cultural resources of the NNSS.

Torsionally flexible attachment system and method

A flexible attachment assembly is described having a bellows capable of absorbing torsion having a first end; a second end opposite to the first end; and a plurality of tubes, each of which is hollow and wound around a longitudinal axis while extending from the first end to the second end, where the plurality of tubes are communicated with each other all along the longitudinal length of the bellows so as to form a bore between the first end and the second end. Also provided is a bellows assembly having at least two sections, each section having a plurality of tubes, each of which is hollow and wound around a longitudinal axis and thus form a bore, where the plurality of sections are connected with each other so that their bores are communicated.

Underground Test Area Activity Waste Management Plan; and Attachment 1 Fluid Management Plan for the Underground Test Area Activity

The U.S. Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration Nevada Field Office initiated the Underground Test Area Activity to characterize the risk posed to human health and the environment as a result of underground nuclear testing activities at the Nevada National Security Site. The UGTA Activity is now administered by the DOE Environmental Management Nevada Program. This document is a revision to NNSA/NSO (2009). The new document and revision number reflect EM Nevada Program as the current UGTA Activity administrator.

Fiber Attachment Module Experiment (FAME): Using a Multiplexed Miniature Hollow Fiber Membrane Bioreactor Solution for Rapid Process Testing

Bioreactor research is mostly limited to continuous stirred-tank reactors (CSTRs) which are not an option for microgravity (g) applications due to the lack of a gravity gradient to drive aeration as described by the Archimedes principle. Bioreactors and filtration systems for treating wastewater in g could avoid the need for harsh pretreatment chemicals and improve overall water recovery. Solution: Membrane Aerated Bioreactors (MABRs) for g applications, including possible use for wastewater treatment systems for the International Space Station (ISS).
