The OGO attitude control subsystem redesign as a result of OGO 3 experience. Volume 1: System analysis and design studies

An oscillation in the OGO-3 roll control channel, resulting from the EP-5 and EP-6 boom motion coupling into the control channel and causing loss of attitude control, is investigated. The study includes (1) an analysis of the OGO-3 and OGO-2 flight data to determine the nature and extent of the roll oscillation phenomena, (2) design analysis of the complete attitude control subsystem (ACS) to evolve changes which would prevent recurrences of the coupled ACS boom oscillation observed on OGO-3, and (3) analog simulations to verify the performance of the design changes selected. Portions of OGO-3 and OGO-2 flight data are illustrated and the major flexible body oscillation are identified. A model of the major flexible appendage dynamics is developed and is shown analytically and through analog simulations to reproduce the OGO-3 oscillation phenomena. The design changes which were found necessary are: a reversal delay logic for the roll reaction wheels, widening of the solar array dead zone from 0.5 to 1.0 deg, and modification of the OPEP control loop to include a filter and stabilizing feedback loops.

Alternating current losses of stabilized NbN.

The ac losses of thin films of NbN have been measured on uncoated samples and samples coated with copper and aluminum. The reversibility of the superconducting to normal transition was studied under conditions of swept current at fixed field and swept field at fixed current. Results show that thin films of NbN can be stabilized by using normal metal overlays, and that ac losses in the stabilized material are substantially lower than those in the equivalent unstabilized material.

Selection and preliminary evaluation of three structures as potential solid conductors of alkali ions: Two hollandites, a titanate, and a tungstate

Utilization of crystal-chemical criteria has suggested three structure types in which alkali ions may be mobile: (1)hollandites K(x)Mg(x/2)Ti(8-x/2)O16 and K(x)Al(x)Ti(8-x)O16 for 1.6 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 2.0 tungstate K2W4013; and (3) sodium hexatitante Na2Ti6O13. Each is a tunnel structure. An electrical screening procedure, previously tested on beta-alumina, has indicated high K(+) ion mobility in the hollandites and in the tungstate, but not in the hexatitanate. Specimens were polycrystalline disks near 90 percent of theoretical density. The ac conductivity calculated from dielectric and capacitance measurements has been attributed to ion mobility. This ac conductivity was up to 0.01/ohm-cm for hollandites and about 0.0001/ohm-cm for the tungstate, with approximate activation energies of 21 to 25 and 16 kJ/mole (5 to 6 and 4 kcal/mole), respectively. Electronic conduction and chemical reactivity have eliminated the tungstate from further consideration. The hollandites have been considered worthy of further development and evaluation.

Electric power processing, distribution and control for advanced aerospace vehicles.

The results of a current study program to develop a rational basis for selection of power processing, distribution, and control configurations for future aerospace vehicles including the Space Station, Space Shuttle, and high-performance aircraft are presented. Within the constraints imposed by the characteristics of power generation subsystems and the load utilization equipment requirements, the power processing, distribution and control subsystem can be optimized by selection of the proper distribution voltage, frequency, and overload/fault protection method. It is shown that, for large space vehicles which rely on static energy conversion to provide electric power, high-voltage dc distribution (above 100 V dc) is preferable to conventional 28 V dc and 115 V ac distribution per MIL-STD-704A. High-voltage dc also has advantages over conventional constant frequency ac systems in many aircraft applications due to the elimination of speed control, wave shaping, and synchronization equipment.

Performance improvement in remote manipulation with time delay by means of a learning system.

A teleoperating system is presented that involves shared control between a human operator and a general-purpose computer-based learning machine. This setup features a trainable control network termed the autonomous control subsystem (ACS) which is able to observe the operator's control actions, learn the task at hand, and take appropriate control actions. A working ACS system is described that has been put in operation for the purpose of exploring the uses of a remote intelligence of this type. The expansion of the present system into a multifunctional learning machine capable of a greater degree of autonomy is also discussed.

KSC lubricant testing program

A program was conducted to evaluate the performance of various lubricants in use and considered for use at Kennedy Space Center (KSC). The overall objectives of the program were to: (1) determine the lubrication characteristics and relative corrosion resistance of lubricants in use and proposed for use at KSC; (2) identify materials which may be equivalent to or better than KELF-90 and Krytox 240 AC greases; and (3) identify or develop an improved lubricating oil suitable for use in liquid oxygen (LOX) pumps at KSC. It was concluded that: (1) earth gel thickened greases are very poor corrosion preventive materials in the KSC environment; (2) Halocarbon 25-5S and Braycote 656 were suitable substiutes for KELF-90 and Krytox 240 AC respectively; and (3) none of the oils evaluated possessed the necessary inertness, lubricity, and corrosion prevention characteristics for the KSC LOX pumping systems in their present configuration.

Solid state power controllers

The rationale, analysis, design, breadboarding and testing of the incremental functional requirements are reported that led to the development of prototype 1 and 5 Amp dc and 1 Amp ac solid state power controllers (SSPC's). The SSPC's are to be considered for use as a replacement of electro-mechanical relays and circuit breakers in future spacecraft and aircraft. They satisfy the combined function of both the relay and circuit breaker and can be remotely controlled by small signals, typically 10 mA, 5 to 28 Vdc. They have the advantage over conventional relay/circuit breaker systems in that they can be located near utilization equipment and the primary ac or dc bus. The low level control, trip indication and status signals can be circuited by small guage wire for control, computer interface, logic, electrical multiplexing, unboard testing, and power management and distribution purposes. This results in increased system versatility at appreciable weight saving and increased reliability.

Improvement program for polycarbonate capacitors

Hermetically sealed, wound, AC, polycarbonate capacitors incorporating design improvements recommended in a previous study were designed and built. A 5000 hour, 400 Hz ac life test was conducted using 384 of these capacitors to verify the adequacy of the design improvements. The improvements incorporated in the capacitors designed for this program eliminated the major cause of failure found in the preceding work, termination failure. A failure cause not present in the previous test became significant in this test with capacitors built from one lot of polycarbonate film. The samples from this lot accounted for 25 percent of the total test complement. Analyses of failed samples showed that the film had an excessive solvent content. This solvent problem was found in 37 of the total 46 failures which occurred in this test. The other nine were random failures resulting from causes such as seal leaks, foreign particles, and possibly wrinkles.

Design development and test: Two-gas atmosphere control subsystem

An atmosphere control subsystem (ACS) was developed for NASA-IBJSC which is designed to measure the major atmospheric constituents in the manned cabin of the space shuttle orbiter and control the addition of oxygen and nitrogen to maintain the partial pressures of these gases within very close limits. The ACS includes a mass spectrometer sensor (MSS) which analyzes the atmosphere of a shuttle vehicle pressurized cabin, and an electronic control assembly (ECA). The MSS was built and tested to meet the requirements for flight equipment for the M-171 Metabolic Analyzer experiment for the Skylab flight program. The instrument analyzes an atmospheric gas sample and produces continuous 0-5 vdc analog signals proportional to the partial pressures of H2, O2, N2, H2O, CO2 and total hydrocarbons having a m/e ratio between 50 and 120. It accepts signals from the MSS proportional to the partial pressures of N2 and O2 and controls the supply of these gases to the closed cabin.

Pulse-modulated dual-gas control subsystem for space cabin atmosphere

An atmosphere control subsystem (ACS) was developed for use in a closed manned cabin, such as the Space Shuttle Orbiter. This subsystem uses the Perkin Elmer mass spectrometer for continuous measurement of major atmospheric constituents (H2, H2O, N2, O2, and CO2). The O2 and N2 analog signals are used as inputs to the controller, which produces a pulse-frequency-modulated output to operate the N2 gas admission solenoid valve and an on-off signal to operate the O2 valve. The proportional controller characteristic results in improved control accuracy as compared with previously used on-off controllers having significant dead-band. A 60-day evaluation test was performed on the ACS during which operation was measured at various values of control setpoint and simulated cabin leakage.

Preliminary design of a Primary Loop Pump Assembly (PLPA), using electromagnetic pumps

A preliminary design study of flight-type dc conduction-permanent magnetic, ac helical induction, and ac linear induction pumps for circulating 883 K (1130 F) NaK at 9.1 kg/sec (20 lb/sec) is described. Various electromagnetic pump geometrics are evaluated against hydraulic performance, and the effects of multiple windings and numbers of pumps per assembly on overall reliability were determined. The methods used in the electrical-hydraulic, stress, and thermal analysis are discussed, and the high temperature electrical materials selected for the application are listed.

Is the red arc a good indicator of ionosphere-magnetosphere conditions

Weak red arcs were observed on the two consecutive nights of July 12-13 and July 13-14, 1969, at Richland, Washington, whereas no red arcs were detectable on the nights preceding and following the observations. Satellite (Ogo 6) data of electron temperature and density, low-frequency ac electric field, and suprathermal electron flux corresponding to the conjugate region of Richland show no significant variations during these days. The data show elevated electron temperatures and enhanced low-frequency ac noise levels at the expected red arc position in the neighborhood of the density trough, as indicated by previous observations. The data appear to indicate that the optical criterion of red arc occurrence would lead to the conclusion of significantly different ionosphere-magnetosphere conditions during these four nights, whereas the more detailed in situ data show that the conditions were very similar.

Performance characteristics of the U.VA. superconducting wind tunnel balance

Initial operational characteristics of a wind tunnel electromagnetic balance utilizing superconducting coils are reported. Both dc and ac superconducting coils are used for balancing and measuring 3-component aerodynamic forces on simple models in Mach 3, room temperature flow. Liquid helium boil-off measurements corresponding to a wide range of operating conditions are presented together with results of systematic ac losses scaling experiments using various pancake coils wound with superconducting tape. This unique prototype facility is primarily for studying the practical feasibility of using superconducting magnetic suspension techniques for aerodynamic testing and accumulating the knowledge and expertise required for extrapolating these techniques to large-scale facilities.

Solar electric propulsion thrust beam interactive effects

Interactive effects between ion engine thrust beams and an SEP spacecraft and its science payload have been examined. AC electric contamination from thrust beam potential fluctuations of both 'common mode' and 'point-to-point' forms has been evaluated. Quenching of point-to-point E-fields by both thrust ion and charge exchange ion plasmas is expected. Reduction methods for AC electric contamination from common mode thrust beam potential fluctuations have been developed. Charged particle contamination of ambient space and plasma wave contamination may result from density magnitude and spatial extent of charge exchange plasma plumes. Reduction methods for cone of directions of high angle charge exchange ions have been examined.

VLF-emissions from ring current electrons. An interpretation of the band of missing emissions

VLF-emissions associated with the enhancement of ring current electrons during magnetic storms and substorms which were detected by the equatorially orbiting S-A satellite (Explorer 45) are described. The emissions observed near the geomagnetic equator consist of essentially two frequency regimes, i.e., one above the electron gyrofrequency, f sub H at the equator and the other below f sub H. This is indicated as a part of the wide-band data obtained during the main phase of the December 17, 1971 magnetic storm. The upper figure is the ac-magnetic field data measured by the search-coil magnetometer with the upper cutoff of 3kHz and the lower figure is the ac-electric field data obtained by the electric field sensor with the upper cutoff of 10kHz. These figures show the time sequence of the observed emissions along the inbound orbit (No. 101) of the satellite as f sub H changes approximately from 3 kHz at 20 UT to 6 kHz at 21 UT. The emissions above f sub H are electrostatic mode, which peak near the frequencies of (n + 1/2) f sub H where n is positive integer, and sometimes emissions up to n = 10 are observed. The emissions below f sub H are whistler mode, which have a conspicuous gap along exactly half electron gyrofrequency, f sub H/2.

The development of a portable cardiac ultrasonoscope

This paper describes a new, portable, battery powered echocardioscope developed at the NASA-Ames Research Center in cooperation with the Stanford University School of Medicine. This instrument has three major advantages over existing equipment. First, it is compact and light weight for easy portability. Second, its DC operation makes it safer to use in remote settings where AC power is unavailable or in intensive care and neonatal units where AC instruments could present electrical hazards for the patient. Third, its design and packaging should enable it to sell for several thousand dollars less than presently marketed ultrasonoscopes. The cooperative development of this instrument, its principles of operation, and the significance of its unique features are presented.
