The 2022 Hunga eruption exercises the nuclear explosion monitoring community

The 2022 Hunga eruption was a global event recorded by all three Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) International Monitoring System (IMS) geophysical waveform sensor technologies: seismic, infrasound, and hydroacoustic. Large volcanic eruptions are rare and additionally present an opportunity to test seismoacoustic detection, location, and identification methods for nuclear explosion monitoring.

MagNetUS 2022 Proceedings

2022 MagNetUS meeting is open for anyone toparticipate either virtually or in-person. The in-personcomponent will be held at The College of William &Mary inWilliamsburg, VA. The purpose of this meeting is (1)to spotlight exciting research in and adjacent to theMagNetUS community and (2) to foster andmaintaincollaborations in basic magnetized plasmaresearch.Intended participants include anyone researching the basic science of magnetized plasmas. More specifically, this could include, but is not limited to, those using spacecraft data, simulationists, theoreticians, and those working with experiments rangingfrom collaborative research facilities (e.g. BaPSF, WiPPL, MPRL, and Frontier experiments on DIII-D) to single-PI college and university-scale labs. Membersof the HED, LTP, and fusion plasma communities areencouraged to participate with an eye toward developing potentially collaborative projects for magnetizedmidscalefacilities. Information about the meeting and MagNetUS in general can be found at http://MagNetUS.net.

Status of New Models Hosted on the Virtual Test Bed (VTB) in 2022

The VTB hosts 20 distinct models, 8 of which were recently developed during 2022 and will be discussed in more detail here. This article provides an overview of the various models hosted and their capabilities. Part of the intent of the VTB is to showcase a ‘block’ style approach to modeling and simulation: if a capability is not showcased for a specific reactor type, it could, in theory, be easily ported/replicated from another. The breadth of advanced reactor types considered is representative of the large variety of concepts being proposed for demonstration.
