Environmental Life Cycle Assessment of Electricity from PV Systems: 2021 Data Update

PV Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a structured, comprehensive method of quantifying and assessing material and energy flows and their associated emissions from manufacturing, transport, installation, use and end of life. This is the second version of this Fact Sheet, published in 2022 based on the 2021 update of the LCA database.

Evaluation of Maximum Allowable Working Pressure and Svensson Burst Pressure Recommended in API 579-1 2021 Edition

ABSTRACT API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 2021 Edition provides the minimum wall thickness, the maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP), and the membrane stress equations for thin and thick-walled cylindrical shells subject to internal pressure in Section 2C.3.3.1 of Appendix 2C – Thickness, MAWP, and Stress Equations for an FFS Assessment. The minimum wall thickness and MAWP are determined using the hoop stress and the Tresca yield criterion. Section 2C.7 – Estimation of Burst Pressure newly added the Svensson method for calculating burst pressure of cylindrical shells under internal pressure, where the plastic yielding is characterized by the von Mises yield criterion. For thin-walled cylinders, the von Mises flow solution of burst pressure in Equation (2C.179) was recommended. For thick-walled cylinders, an implicit burst pressure solution in an integral equation (2C.176) was recommended. But this integral equation is inconvenient to use in practice. It is well known that the classic plasticity theory includes the Tresca and von Mises yield criteria, with the Tresca criterion predicting a lower bound solution and the von Mises criteria predicting an upper bound solution. In addition, the present author developed an average shear stress yield criterion that can determine more accurate limit and burst pressures for thin and thick-walled cylinders. This work uses these three yield criteria to evaluate the minimum required wall thickness, MAWP and Svensson burst pressure recommended in the API 579 code.

SCALE inventory and reactivity analysis as part of the Hermes 2021 PSAR review

The readiness of SCALE for comprehensive studies of pebble-bed reactors has been demonstrated through detailed analysis of a fluoride salt–cooled, high-temperature pebble-bed reactor (PB-FHR). The methods developed for pebble-bed reactor modeling in SCALE, particularly for inventory generation, have proven effective in gaining insights into the reactor physics of this advanced reactor. Excellent agreement with another code package has been observed, further highlighting SCALE’s strong performance. The SCALE results supported the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s construction permit application review of the Hermes low-power PB-FHR demonstration reactor. A SCALE model of the Hermes reactor was developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory using information from the Preliminary Safety Analysis Report (PSAR) and supplemented with publicly available data. SCALE reactivity coefficient simulations reproduced PSAR results within 1σ statistical uncertainties. Sensitivity studies emphasized the importance of graphite specifications for accurate keff predictions.

Inversion of dynamical Bragg intensities to complex structure factors by iterated projections. For Ultramic. 2020. ("Pico" Festschrift, May 2021)

We discuss a method for recovering complex structure factors from many simultaneously excited Bragg beam intensities is described. The method is applied to simulated transmission electron diffraction data over a wide range of crystal thickness and beam energies. The method is based on iterated projections between structure and scattering matrices, which are related by a matrix unitary transformation, exponential, which we invert. The algorithm removes multiple-scattering perturbations from diffraction data and might be extended to other fields, including X-ray and neutron diffraction and cryo-electron microscopy. Because coherent multiple scattering involves interference between Bragg beams, the method also solves the phase problem. Unlike dynamical inversion from electron microscope images or ptychography data, the method, which starts with Bragg beam intensities, provides complex structure factors unaffected by focusing errors or resolution limitations imposed by lenses. We provide inversions from simulated data with 441 simultaneously excited Bragg beams over a range of thickness and beam energy. We discuss the retrieval of chirality information from enantiomorphs, the efficient incorporation of symmetry information using the irreducible representation of the group of structure matrices, and the effect of HOLZ lines to provide three-dimensional information.
