Structural, magnetic, optical, dielectric and electronic properties of R 2 NiIrO 6 (R = Pr and Nd): A comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigation

Double perovskites are highly promising materials capable of exhibiting a wide variety of phenomena. In this work, we perform a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of polycrystalline R 2 NiIrO 6 (R = Pr and Nd) compounds. Both compounds were synthesised using the solid-state reaction method. Rietveld refinement confirmed a monoclinic structure with the P2 1 /n space group for both compounds. The scanning electron images showed the average grain sizes of 0.55 μm for R = Pr and 0.46 μm for R = Nd. Fourier transform infrared ra- diation spectra of the two compounds presented two intense bands at 470 cm -1 and 540 cm -1 . The optical measurements revealed that the band gaps of the compounds were in the visible absorption range. The field- cooled magnetisation - field hysteresis measurements indicated exchange bias properties in the synthesised compounds at low temperatures. Both temperature and frequency variation of dielectric constant and loss tangent measurements were conducted. The frequency-dependent ac conductivity measurements indicated that the conductivity increases with the increase of frequency as well as temperature. The Nd 2 NiIrO 6 compound showed lower ac conductivities compared to its isostructural Pr 2 NiIrO 6 compound. The atomic and electronic structures of Nd 2 NiIrO 6 and Pr 2 NiIrO 6 were explored using the spin-polarised calculations performed within the DFT+U method. Our results suggested that the inclusion of on-site correlations and repulsions for the d-states of atoms was necessary in order to obtain finite band gaps of Nd 2 NiIrO 6 and Pr 2 NiIrO 6 systems.

Spectral deconvolution without the deconvolution: Extracting temperature from x-ray Thomson scattering spectra without the source-and-instrument function

X-ray Thomson scattering (XRTS) probes the dynamic structure factor of the system, but the measured spectrum is broadened by the combined source-and-instrument function (SIF) of the setup. In order to extract properties such as temperature from an XRTS spectrum, the broadening by the SIF needs to be removed. Recent work [Dornheim et al. Nat. Commun. 13 , 7911 (2022)] has suggested that the SIF may be deconvolved using the two-sided Laplace transform. However, the extracted information can depend strongly on the shape of the input SIF, and the SIF is in practice challenging to measure accurately. Here, we propose an alternative approach: we demonstrate that considering ratios of Laplace-transformed XRTS spectra collected at different scattering angles is equivalent to performing the deconvolution, but without the need for explicit knowledge of the SIF. From these ratios, it is possible to directly extract the temperature from the scattering spectra, when the system is in thermal equilibrium. We find the method to be generally robust to spectral noise and physical differences between the spectrometers, and we explore situations in which the method breaks down. Furthermore, the fact that consistent temperatures can be extracted for systems in thermal equilibrium indicates that non-equilibrium effects could be identified by inconsistent temperatures of a few eV between the ratios of three or more scattering angles.

Optical and Plasmonic Properties of High-Electron-Density Epitaxial and Oxidative Controlled Titanium Nitride Thin Films

The present paper reports on the fabrication, detailed structural characterizations, and theoretical modeling of titanium nitride (TiN) and its isostructural oxide derivative, titanium oxynitride (TiNO) thin films that have excellent plasmonic properties and that also have the potential to overcome the limitation of noble metal and refractory metals. The TiNO films deposited at 700 °C in high vacuum conditions have the highest reflectance (R = ~ 95%), largest negative dielectric constant (ε 1 = –161), and maximal plasmonic figure of merit (FoM = –ε 1 /ε 2 ) of 1.2, followed by the 600 °C samples deposited in a vacuum (R = ~ 85%, ε 1 = –145, FoM = 0.8) and 700 °C–5 mTorr sample (R = ~ 82%, ε 1 = –8, FoM = 0.3). To corroborate our experimental observations, we calculated the phonon dispersions and Raman active modes of TiNO by using the virtual crystal approximation. From the experimental and theoretical studies, a multilayer optical model has been proposed for the TiN/TiNO epitaxial thin films for obtaining individual complex dielectric functions from which many other optical parameters can be calculated. The advantages of oxide derivatives of TiN are the continuation of similar free electron density as in TiN and the acquisition of additional features such as oxygen-dependent semiconductivity with a tunable bandgap.

Calibration and characterization of the line-VISAR diagnostic at the HED-HIBEF instrument at the European XFEL

In dynamic-compression experiments, the line-imaging Velocity Interferometer System for Any Reflector (VISAR) is a well-established diagnostic used to probe the velocity history, including wave profiles derived from dynamically compressed interfaces and wavefronts, depending on material optical properties. Knowledge of the velocity history allows for the determination of the pressure achieved during compression. Such a VISAR analysis is often based on Fourier transform techniques and assumes that the recorded interferograms are free from image distortions. In this paper, we describe the VISAR diagnostic installed at the HED-HIBEF instrument located at the European XFEL along with its calibration and characterization. It comprises a two-color (532, 1064 nm), three-arm (with three velocity sensitivities) line imaging system. We provide a procedure to correct VISAR images for geometric distortions and evaluate the performance of the system using Fourier analysis. We finally discuss the spatial and temporal calibrations of the diagnostic. As an example, we compare the pressure extracted from the VISAR analysis of shock-compressed polyimide and silicon.

Enhanced Ion Transport and Molecular Packing Stability in Asymmetric 2D Nanostructured π‐Conjugated Thieno[3,2‐b]Thiophene‐Based Liquid Crystal

Organic semiconductors based on liquid crystal (LC) molecules have attracted increasing interest. Here, in this work, two linear LCs based on 2,5‐bis(thien‐2‐yl)thieno[3,2‐b]thiophene (BTTT) mesogen are designed and synthesized, including BTTT/dEO3 with two symmetrically attached tri(ethylene oxide) groups and BTTT/mEO6 with one asymmetrically attached hexa(ethylene oxide) group. These two molecules have comparable functional‐group compositions but different molecular geometries, leading to their moderately different material performances. Both LCs show smectic mesophases with relatively low transition temperatures as confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. A combination of experimental grazing incidence wide‐angle X‐ray scattering and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations reveals a herringbone packing motif of BTTT segments in both LCs while a smaller molecular tilt angle in BTTT/mEO6. Ionic conductivities are measured by doping LCs with different amounts of ionic dopants, lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI). BTTT/mEO6 shows better smectic phase stability to higher LiTFSI doping ratios. Both LCs exhibit similar ionic conductivities in the smectic phases, but BTTT/mEO6 outperforms BTTT/dEO3 by a factor of three in the amorphous phase at higher temperatures. MD simulations, performed to examine the ion solvation environment, reveal that BTTT/mEO6 is more efficient in coordinating Li‐ions and screening their interactions with TFSI‐ions which further promote ionic transport.

Structure–Activity Relationships for Ethanol Dehydrogenation to Acetaldehyde by Silica-Supported Zinc Oxide Catalysts

Silica-supported ZnO efficiently catalyzes the nonoxidative dehydrogenation of ethanol to acetaldehyde, which is relevant for production of 1,3-butadiene from bioethanol. Characterization with in situ spectroscopies under dehydrated conditions (high sensitivity-low energy ion scattering (HS-LEIS), diffuse reflectance (DR) UV–vis, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS), inelastic neutron scattering (INS), and UV Raman), and ammonia adsorption probed by temperature-programmed desorption followed by DRIFTS and mass spectrometry (DRIFTS-MS NH 3 -TPD), and DFT calculations revealed that the supported ZnO x phase was present as isolated surface ZnO x sites on SiO 2 , with the vast majority coordinated by two siloxane bonds and one silicon atom with two nonbridging oxygens ((≡SiO) 2 Zn 2+ O 2 Si=), anchored at 4-, 5-, and 6-membered siloxane rings. A minor fraction of surface ZnO x sites possessed Lewis acidity, and even fewer sites possessed a Bro̷nsted acidic Zn(OH) + Si moiety. Ethanol temperature-programmed surface reaction-mass spectrometry (TPSR-MS) with various oxidative or ethanol reaction pretreatments indicated that only sites with Lewis and Bro̷nsted acidic character (Zn(OH) + Si) were active for ethanol dehydrogenation, while the majority surface (≡SiO) 2 Zn 2+ O 2 Si= sites were inactive. Greater heterogeneity among all surface ZnO x sites, as assessed by in situ DR UV–vis spectroscopy, was associated with a greater number of ZnO x sites that were active for ethanol dehydrogenation as well as lower enthalpic barriers for acetaldehyde production among the most active surface ZnO x sites. Turnover frequencies and the apparent activation energy for ethanol dehydrogenation were determined from steady-state kinetics. Together, these findings suggested that anchoring inactive surface (≡SiO) 2 Zn 2+ O 2 Si= sites on the silica support caused a greater number of active surface ZnO x sites to adopt a more strained configuration, promoting ethanol dehydrogenation catalysis. Pretreatments and catalysts that promoted desorption of ethanol during TPSR, taken as a marker of surface dehydroxylation, were associated with an increased number of the most active surface (Zn(OH) + Si) sites. Such findings suggested that inactive surface ZnO x sites were activated for ethanol dehydrogenation by dehydroxylation of the support and/or decreased coordination to hemilabile siloxane ligands.

VERITAS and Multiwavelength Observations of the Blazar B3 2247+381 in Response to an IceCube Neutrino Alert

While the sources of the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux detected by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory are still largely unknown, one of the promising methods to improve our understanding of them is investigating the potential temporal and spatial correlations between neutrino alerts and the electromagnetic radiation from blazars. We report on the multiwavelength target-of-opportunity observations of the blazar B3 2247+381, taken in response to an IceCube multiplet alert for a cluster of muon neutrino events compatible with the source location between 2022 May 20 and 2022 November 10. B3 2247+381 was not detected with VERITAS during this time period. The source was found to be in a low-flux state in the optical, ultraviolet, and gamma-ray bands for the time interval corresponding to the neutrino event, but was detected in the hard X-ray band with NuSTAR during this period. We find the multiwavelength spectral energy distribution is described well using a simple one-zone leptonic synchrotron self-Compton radiation model. Moreover, assuming the neutrinos originate from hadronic processes within the jet, the neutrino flux would be accompanied by a photon flux from the cascade emission, and the integrated photon flux required in such a case would significantly exceed the total multiwavelength fluxes and the VERITAS upper limits presented here. The lack of flaring activity observed with VERITAS, combined with the low multiwavelength flux levels, as well as the significance of the neutrino excess being at a 3σ level (uncorrected for trials), makes B3 2247+381 an unlikely source of the IceCube multiplet. We conclude that the neutrino excess is likely a background fluctuation.

EP 250108a/SN 2025kg: Observations of the Most Nearby Broad-line Type Ic Supernova Following an Einstein Probe Fast X-Ray Transient

With a small sample of fast X-ray transients (FXTs) with multiwavelength counterparts discovered to date, their progenitors and connections to γ-ray bursts (GRBs) and supernovae (SNe) remain ambiguous. Here, we present photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN 2025kg, the SN counterpart to the FXT EP 250108a. At z = 0.17641, this is the closest known SN discovered following an Einstein Probe (EP) FXT. We show that SN 2025kg’s optical spectra reveal the hallmark features of a broad-lined Type Ic SN. Its light-curve evolution and expansion velocities are comparable to those of GRB-SNe, including SN 1998bw, and two past FXT-SNe. We present JWST/NIRSpec spectroscopy taken around SN 2025kg’s maximum light, and find weak absorption due to He I 1.0830 μm and 2.0581 μm and a broad, unidentified emission feature at ∼4–4.5 μm. Further, we observe broadened Hα in optical data at 42.5 days that is not detected at other epochs, indicating interaction with H-rich material. From its light curve, we derive a 56 Ni mass of 0.2–0.6 M ⊙ . Together with our companion Letter, our broadband data are consistent with a trapped or low-energy (≲10 51 erg) jet-driven explosion from a collapsar with a zero-age main-sequence mass of 15–30 M ⊙ . Finally, we show that the sample of EP FXT-SNe supports past estimates that low-luminosity jets seen through FXTs are more common than successful (GRB) jets, and that similar FXT-like signatures are likely present in at least a few percent of the brightest Type Ic-BL SNe.

Noncontacting device to indicate deflection of turbopump internal rotating parts

Phase 2 (development) which was concluded for the ultrasonic Doppler device and the light-pipe-reflectance device is reported. An ultrasonic Doppler breadboard system was assembled which accurately measured runout in the J-2 LOX pump impeller during operation. The transducer was mounted on the outside of the pump volute using a C-clamp. Vibration was measured by conducting the ultrasonic wave through the volute housing and through the fluid in the volute to the impeller surface. The impeller vibration was also measured accurately using the light-pipe probe mounted in an elastomeric-gland fitting in the pump case. A special epoxy resin developed for cryogenic applications was forced into the end of the fiber-optic probe to retain the fibers. Subsequently, the probe suffered no damage after simultaneous exposure to 2150 psi and 77 F. Preliminary flash X-radiographs were taken of the turbine wheel and the shaft-bearing-seal assembly, using a 2-megavolt X-ray unit. Reasonable resolution and contrast was obtained. A fast-neutron detector was fabricated and sensitivity was measured. The results demonstrated that the technique is feasible for integrated-time measurements requiring, perhaps, 240 revolutions to obtain sufficient exposure at 35,000 rpm. The experimental verification plans are included.

The optical polarization of Scorpius X-1.

The X-ray source Sco X-1 is known to have a slight linear polarization in visible light. An investigation was conducted to determine whether the origin of the polarization is intrinsic to the source or interstellar. No evidence could be found for unusual polarization properties in Sco X-1 that would point to an intrinsically polarized source, although this cannot be excluded. It is pointed out that the case for interstellar polarization would become very strong if stars in the immediate vicinity are found to be polarized with the same position angle.

Soft X-rays from Cygnus X-2 and from Cygnus X-1 /in eclipse/.

Observations of Cygnus X-1 (probably in eclipse) and Cygnus X-2 on Oct. 23, 1971, show quite low absorption in their spectrum, and yet they are thought to be in a double or multiple star system from the optical data. The lack of intrinsic absorption in their spectra may be taken to mean that they lie sufficiently far from their primaries for a reduction to virtually zero of their interaction with the atmosphere of the primaries.
