Boron carbide amorphous solid with tunable band gap

Boron carbide B x C (x = 1/6 – 10) powders were synthesized through a microwave-assisted carbothermic reduction reaction as a potential clean energy material. Their crystallographic structures and optical properties were characterized. X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction indicated that the synthesized B x C powders were amorphous. Electron energy-loss spectroscopy demonstrated that the composition of boron and carbon was in amorphous materials, and their chemical bonding were disclosed from Raman scattering spectroscopy. Here, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy indicated that the bandgap of the bulks varied from 2.30 eV to 3.90 eV, tuned by the boron/carbon element ratio.

Tunable Infrared Laser Absorption Spectroscopy of Aluminum Monoxide $A^2\Pi_i $–$X^2\Sigma^+$.

We report the details of an infrared, laser absorption diagnostic capable of quantifying aluminum monoxide temperature and column density at 100 kHz repetition rate. This novel technique employs a near infrared MEMS-VCSEL to measure rotationally resolved optical absorption spectra of aluminum monoxide $A^2\Pi_i$ - $X^2\Sigma^+$ from approximately 7400 –7900 cm -1 . Temperatures and column densities are extracted from model regressions to provide temporally resolved thermochemical information on aluminum oxidation reactions. The measurement capability is demonstrated by performing 100 kHz measurement in the plume of an exploding bridgewire with measured temperatures of 3450–3100 K and column densities of 1– 11 x 10 16 cm -2 . To the authors knowledge, this is the first use of the AlO $A^2\Pi_i$ - $X^2\Sigma^+$ transition to characterize aluminum combustion environments. Details regarding signal extraction and calibration of MEMS-VCSEL spectra are also included. Although unsuccessful, efforts to extract kinetic temperature and column density from simultaneously measured, atomic aluminum 2 P 3/2,1/2 - 2 S 1/2 transitions at 7618 cm -1 and 7602 cm -1 are also described.

Combustion synthesis of Eu 2 O 3 nanomaterials with tunable phase composition and morphology

Combustion reactions in europium nitrate – acetylacetone – 2-methoxyethanol solutions and gels were investigated to produce europium (III) oxide (Eu 2 O 3 ) nanocrystalline materials and thin films. Thermal analyses of solutions indicated that the 2-methoxyethanol solvent also acts as a fuel in the absence of acetylacetone. Adding acetylacetone increases the overall heat of the reaction. Thermal analysis results revealed that the slow oxidation of unburned hydrocarbon residues follows the primary combustion reaction. Time-temperature profile measurements of the bulk combustion synthesis process in air and nitrogen atmospheres enabled the extraction of the maximum reaction temperature and the heating and cooling rates in the combustion zone. Several direct correlations exist between measured combustion parameters and the phase composition of the products. Combustion in air results in mixed-phase cubic and monoclinic nanocrystalline Eu 2 O 3 . Increasing the acetylacetone concentration in solutions increases the synthesis temperature and decreases the quantity of cubic Eu 2 O 3 . Here, the reaction of solutions in a nitrogen atmosphere or diluted with Eu 2 O 3 provides control of the product phase composition and reduces the quantity of the monoclinic phase. Transmission electron microscopy imaging shows that the Eu 2 O 3 end products are highly porous aggregates of nanocrystalline particles. Electrospraying of reactive solutions onto different substrates followed by short annealing makes the preparation of Eu 2 O 3 materials with diverse morphologies possible.

Strength mechanisms and tunability in Al-Ce-Mg ternary alloys enabled by additive manufacturing

Al-Ce-based alloys are promising candidates for additive manufacturing (AM) due to their hot-cracking resistance and because they do not require heat treatment to obtain precipitation strengthening. Rapid solidification rates enabled by AM methods can lead to enhanced mechanical properties; however, the strengthening mechanisms over large composition ranges were unclear. Here, combinatorial synthesis by directed-energy deposition (DED) and hardness measurements were used to rapidly map the composition-dependent strength of the ternary Al-Ce-Mg system. Tensile testing and microstructure characterization of selected compositions were performed to elucidate the compositional dependence of the strengthening mechanisms. Al 11 Ce 3 precipitates were present in all cases, and the maximum hardness (1.25 GPa) was measured for the Al-8Ce-10Mg composition. A combination of (i) Hall-Petch strengthening, based on the FCC-matrix-phase cell size; (ii) particle strengthening, based on Al 11 Ce 3 volume fraction and size; and (iii) solid-solution strengthening, based on Mg composition of the matrix phase, were used to account for the measured strengths. Vickers hardness is shown to correlate well with ultimate tensile strength in these alloys, highlighting the value of surface-based techniques for rapid screening.

Some exactly solvable and tunable frustrated spin models

In this report we discuss three exactly solvable spin models of geometric frustration. First, we discuss a 1-parameter subfamily of the 16 vertex model, which can be mapped to a planar Ising model and solved via Fisher-Dubedát decorations. We then consider a 1-parameter family generalization of the Villain’s fully frustrated model, which interpolates between Onsager’s 2D Ising model and the Villain one. We then discuss spin ice models on a tree, which can be solved exactly using recursions a lá Bethe.
