Topography and pigeon orientation

Two types of homing experiments with pigeons to determine the influence of topographical features on the orientation behavior of the birds are discussed. The releases and following were conducted by ground experiments in which the birds are tracked by visual observation at points of topographical interest and the helicopter method by which the birds are tracked throughout the entire flight. The ground experiments showed a strong influence of topographical features on initial orientation. The helicopter experiments showed that the ground experiments do not provide adequate information on the manner in which homing occurs.

Mariner 9 S-band Martian occultation experiment - Initial results on the atmosphere and topography of Mars.

A preliminary analysis of 15 radio occultation measurements taken on the day side of Mars between 40 deg S and 33 deg S has revealed that the temperature in the lower 15 to 20 km of the atmosphere of Mars is essentially isothermal and warmer than expected. This result, which is also confirmed by the increased altitude of the ionization peak of the ionosphere, can possibly be caused by the absorption of solar radiation by fine particles of dust suspended in the lower atmosphere. The floor of the classical bright area of Hellas was found to be about 6 km below its western rim and 4 km below the mean radius of Mars at that latitude.

Venus - Topography revealed by radar data.

Surface height variations over the entire equatorial region on Venus have been estimated from extended series of measurements of interplanetary radar echo delays. Most notable is a mountainous section of about 3-kilometer peak height located at a longitude of 100 degrees (International Astronomical Union coordinate system). The eastern edge has an average inclination of about 0.5 degrees, which is unusually steep for a large-scale slope on Venus. The resolution of the radar measurements along the surface of Venus varied between about 200 and 400 kilometers with a repeatability in altitude determination generally between 200 and 500 meters. The mean equatorial radius was found to be 6050.0 plus or minus 0.5 kilometers.

Mars - The effects of topography on baroclinic instability.

The effects of a sloping lower boundary on the quasi-geostrophic baroclinic instability model of Eady are considered. Although the analytical model is too simplified for direct application to Martian conditions, the results should be useful in the interpretation of observations and numerical experiments. For slope orientations of most interest on Mars, the wavelength, growth rate and heat fluxes associated with the most unstable waves are decreased. As a result, the radiative-dynamical equilibrium state is closer to radiative equilibrium than one would calculate for a model with a horizontal lower boundary.
