Fast data-driven spectrometer with direct measurement of time and frequency for multiple single photons

We present a single-photon-sensitive spectrometer based on a linear array of 512 single-photon avalanche diode detectors with 0.04 nm spectral and 40 ps temporal resolutions. We employ a fast data-driven operation that allows direct measurement of time and frequency for simultaneous single photons, time- and frequency-stamping each single-photon detection. Our results combine excellent temporal and spectral resolution. This work opens numerous applications in quantum photonics, especially when both spectral and temporal properties of single photons can be exploited.

Demand Response Optimization and Management System for Real-TIme (DROMS-RT)

To design and demonstrate DROMS-RT, a highly distributed Demand Response Optimization and Management System for Real-Time (DROMS-RT) power flow control to support large scale integration of distributed renewable generation into the grid. AutoGrid developed a novel control and communications platform to allow highly dispatchable demand response (DR) services in time frames suitable for providing ancillary services to the transmission grid. These services will be substantially less expensive and more efficient than other forms of ancillary services options currently available to manage the intermittency associated with large-scale renewable integration. DROMSRT successfully leveraged Automated Demand Response (ADR) by fundamentally re-thinking the architecture of the DR platform from the ground up and by developing innovative new technologies in a number of areas related to DR. DROMS-RT leveraged the low-cost, open, interoperable DR signaling technology, OpenADR, and low-cost, internet-protocol based telemetry solutions to reduce the cost of hardware. This allowed DROMS-RT to provide dynamic price signals to millions of OpenADR clients. Statistically rigorous signal processing techniques were developed to reliably detect even small load reductions in the presence of noisy baseline profiles. Novel forecasting engines based on modern online machine learning algorithms enabled accurate individualized forecasts for customer loads in the presence of dynamic pricing signals, and a real-time decision engines enabled continuous optimization and optimal dispatch of DR resources across a large portfolio of heterogeneous loads that respond at varying time-scales. Moreover, the real-time optimization conducted by the decision engine can utilize grid physics to maximize load reduction at the transmission system in addition to the distribution sites, for more efficient grid operation. Finally, the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) availability of the DROMS-RT platform has reduced the cost of deployment and enable participation of small commercial and residential customers in DR who otherwise would not be able to do so.

Expanding the Knock/Emissions/Misfire Limits for the Realization of Ultra-Low Emissions, High Efficiency Heavy Duty Natural Gas Engines

The Vehicle Technologies Office funds early-stage, high-risk research to develop technology upon which industry can implement innovative transportation energy technologies that increase efficiency, decrease cost, and expand use of domestic energy sources, such as natural gas (NG). To improve the viability of medium and heavy-duty vehicles the natural gas engine efficiency must be closer to that of diesel. This work addresses fundamental limitations to achieve diesel-like efficiencies in heavy duty on-road natural gas engines. The primary goal of this research is to achieve diesel-like efficiencies in heavy duty on-road NG engines, focusing on the Cummins 15 liter engine platform (baseline diesel efficiency of 44% at peak torque). That goal has been achieved, though more work is needed to facilitate practical implementation of the developed technologies.

Pulse Strengthened and Laser Edge Sealed Vacuum Insulation Glazing

A scalable, low-cost processing strategy for glass strengthening and sealing is proposed to improve the thermal performance of insulating glass units and develop innovative window technologies. In this project, a combination of large area photonic processing, additive manufacturing, and laser encapsulation techniques is reported to realize a vacuum glazing technology to meet the cost, performance, reliability, and throughput demands. A modeling framework for evaluating the mechanical and thermal response was established to verify the structural deformation and thermal conductance. Micro-size glass frits in printing ink and a continuous-wave laser curing were employed to allow the formation of a hermetic bonding layer and led to improvement of glass edge sealing. Various sealing parameters, including laser traveling speed, spot diameter, and laser power were optimized. The water seepage and mechanical strength of the resulting glass-to-glass bonding were examined as well. These results showcase the development of a practical vacuum insulating glazing with several unique features through a combination of photonic processing, laser encapsulation, and additive manufacturing.

Microalgae Hydrothermal Liquefaction and Biocrude Upgrading: 2022 State of Technology

A preliminary techno-economic analysis (TEA) was developed for the fiscal year (FY) 2022 state of technology (SOT) assessment to evaluate the benefits and risks of using demonstrated, high-productivity algae strains for fuels generation, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). In 2022, the marine algal strain, Picochlorum celeri, which demonstrated the highest outdoor biomass productivities reported to date in the DOE-funded open-pond raceway testbed at the Arizona Center for Algae Technology and Innovation (AzCATI), was tested for continuous hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) processing at PNNL. HTL testing results demonstrated a biocrude yield of 0.33 g/g algae on an ash-free dry weight (AFDW) basis from P. celeri. The hydrotreatment testing of the HTL biocrude from P. celeri was also conducted to investigate the production of jet fuel from marine algal biomass. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of jet fuel production from autotrophically grown marine algal biomass. The current hydrotreating testing demonstrated approximately 22.7 wt% of the hydrotreated oil within the typical boiling-point range of jet fuel (150–250 °C). Initial testing of the jet fuel cut (JFC) showed that the physical properties under investigation were within typical ranges for petroleum-based jet fuels. The experimental work of this study closes the gap between outdoor algae cultivation and algae conversion to critical transportation fuels using the same algae strain for both cultivation and conversion testing. The continuous HTL and the upgrading testing described herein demonstrate the potential of producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from algae cultivated in open-pond systems using the primary inputs of sunlight and carbon dioxide.

The Scientific Case for Concurrent Neutron and X-ray Scattering and Spectroscopy

The interrogation of materials with X-rays or neutrons to determine the structure, energetics, and dynamics of materials is fundamental to advancing materials' physical and chemical science and developing innovative material technologies. A transcending challenge in developing novel materials is that progress hinges on understanding the structure and dynamics across multiple time and length scales in complex materials that feature multiple components, interfaces, and compositions. Despite the ever-growing demands on materials’ characterization, existing approaches are almost exclusively based on isolated X-ray or neutron scattering, i.e., an approach commensurate with the more narrowly defined needs of fifty years ago. A three-day workshop sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) analyzed the demand for concurrent neutron and X-ray (NeX) experiments. It was held at the Spring Hill Suites, San Jose, California, from June 2 to 4, 2022. In this workshop, 70 national and international experts ascertained the crucial need to establish NeX capabilities to advance the science of complex materials and systems in the US. Here, we illustrate the need for NeX scattering and spectroscopy experiments by showcasing examples that span areas as diverse as biomaterials, energy science, soft matter, and nanomaterials. To provide NeX capability will require new instrumentation that enables concurrent experiments. Affected areas include chemistry, soft matter, quantum materials, pure and applied chemistry, bioscience, geoscience, and applied materials. NeX benefits research outcomes due to the complementarity of the two techniques, which is essential for better model refinement. While joint refinement of data from separate neutron and X-ray experiments is critical to avoid ambiguities, especially in multiphase-multicomponent materials, concurrent experiments overcome scientific and technical barriers associated with single measurements, separated by location and, thus, time. Among all the examples, these factors introduce uncertainties in the results that complicate data analysis. [1,2] [3] While models are strongly sample-dependent, the principles of joint refinement are generally applicable to these disciplines, including the development of advanced parameterization, modeling, and analysis techniques that also consider the temporal and spatial resolutions of the two methods, leading to unambiguous data interpretation. Solutions for technical barriers must be found to realize NeX experiments, including developing robust sample environments that meet the optical requirements of neutrons and X-rays.

Hawaii Fish Company Inc. Technical Assistance Voucher (Abstract)

For the past several years, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) have provided technical assistance to the recipients of Department of Energy (DOE) -funded voucher programs, namely American-Made Challenges (AMC), the Incubator Program, and the Small Business Vouchers Program. Drawing on lessons learned and from first-hand experiences, NREL is leading a new holistic and streamlined voucher program aimed at strengthening ties between American innovators and the national labs. This new program, “Vouchers to Enable Laboratory and Organizational Collaboration for Innovation and Technology Improvements,” or VELOCITI, will leverage the successful elements of past programs, create administrative efficiencies, and enable the buildout of a national program to drive strong relationships between entrepreneurs and the national labs to accelerate the roll-out of new technologies in the US solar sector. This work will evaluate Hawaii Fish Company’s (HFC’s) floating renewable energy-powered aeration systems, designed primarily for aquaculture ponds, with crossover applications to farm ponds, reservoirs, and other water bodies. Notably, HFC’s systems include a variety of configurations, such as direct-solar systems, battery-storage systems, and systems with a secondary wind turbine option. HFC is planning to refine and commercialize their renewable energy aeration platforms. Presently, HFC is fabricating multiple configurations of the systems for deployment in multiple locations in the U.S. PNNL will apply technical expertise to assist in these goals, benefitting the industry partner by giving them an understanding of the performance of their systems. The technical objectives of this project are to understand system performance and reliability, determine a path toward certification, and model the performance of the systems in different locations.
