Nanostructured Block Polymer Electrolytes: Tailoring Self-Assembly to Unlock the Potential in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Ion-containing solid block polymer (BP) electrolytes can self-assemble into microphase-separated domains to facilitate the independent optimization of ion conduction and mechanical stability; this assembly behavior has the potential to improve the functionality and safety of lithium-ion batteries over liquid electrolytes to meet future demands (e.g., large capacities and long lifetimes) in various applications. However, significant enhancements in the ionic conductivity and processability of BPs must be realized for BP-based electrolytes to become robust alternatives in commercial devices. Toward this end, the controlled modification of BP electrolytes’ intra-domain (nanometer-scale) and multi-grain (micrometer-scale) structure is one viable approach; intra-domain ion transport and segmental compatibility (related to the effective Flory–Huggins parameter, χ eff ) can be increased by tuning the ion and monomer-segment distributions, and the morphology can be selected such that the multi-grain transport is less sensitive to grain size and orientation.

Tailoring Crosslinks through Time─A Paradigm for Tough Hydrogels

The multidisciplinary applications of hydrogels have motivated a thorough exploration of the relationship between their structural and mechanical properties, i.e., spatial structure–function relationships, with particular regard to strength and toughness. While this approach has driven fundamental advancements in the design of robust hydrogel structures, further complementary perspectives are needed to enable holistic, rational design schemes that integrate considerations such as fabrication and advanced functions like response and adaptation. To these ends, this review focuses on the dynamics of temporal-function relationships and their fundamental bases in order to highlight how the dynamic regulation of polymer interactions programs: 1) polymer assembly and material structure; 2) response to deformation and fracture behavior; 3) dynamic modulation of properties and structural remodeling/self-healing. Here, by exploring this intersection of hydrogel formation, function, and remodeling, this review seeks to shed light on the fundamental relationship between molecular structure, material assembly, and performance in order to connect the emerging area of bioinspired materials processing with tough hydrogel design, and further provides a lasting inspiration and impetus for future hydrogel development that enables valuable scientific and technological advancements.

Tailoring Pore Architecture and Heteroatom Functionality of Polymeric Waste-Derived Nanoporous Carbon for CO 2 Capture Applications

This study proposes upcycling polymeric waste, i.e., waste floral foam, into high-performance nanoporous carbon that efficiently captures CO 2 . This paper presents strategies for improving the properties of nanoporous carbon, which aid in a superior CO 2 capture performance. Initially, pristine nanoporous carbon was produced from waste floral foam using various KOH impregnation ratios. The nanoporous carbon with a 1:2 (waste floral foam:KOH) ratio exhibiting optimal CO 2 capture capability was further advanced through single and dual atom doping. The doping of N and codoping of N,S atoms into the nanoporous carbon altered its textural and surface chemical properties, making them efficient for CO 2 capture. Comparative CO 2 capture studies of pristine nanoporous carbon (NC-x), N-doped nanoporous carbon (N-NC2), and N,S-codoped nanoporous carbon (N,S-NC2) demonstrate the superiority of N-doping. N-doped nanoporous carbon exhibited the largest ultramicroporosity (0.3100 cm3/g, 63.43%) and highest heteroatom content (34.94 atomic %), contributing to its enhanced CO 2 capture capability (4.54 mmol/g). Finally, implementing the “waste-to-depollution” approach, this research lays the groundwork for producing low-cost, environmentally friendly nanoporous carbon with remarkable CO 2 capture attributes.

Pyrrophens: Pyrrole-Based Hexadentate Ligands Tailor-Made for Uranyl (UO 2 2+ ) Coordination and Molecular Recognition

Derivatives of a novel pyrrole-containing Schiff base ligand system (called “pyrrophen”) are presented which feature substituted phenylene linkers (R 1 = R 2 = H (H 2 L 1 ); R 1 = R 2 = CH 3 (H 2 L 2 )) and a binding pocket modeled after macrocyclic species. These ligands bind neutral CH 3 OH in the solid state through pyrrolic hydrogen-bonding. Here, the interaction of the uranyl cation (UO 2 2+ ) and H 2 L 1–2 yields planar hexagonal bipyramdial uranyl complexes, while the Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ complexes were found to self-assemble as dinuclear helicate complexes (M 2 L 2 ) with H 2 L 1 under identical conditions. The favorable binding of UO 2 2+ over Zn 2+ provides insight into the molecular recognition of uranyl over other metal species. Structural features of these complexes are examined with special attention to features of the UO 2 2+ coordination environment which distinguish them from other related salophen and porphyrinoid complexes.

Tailorable Micelle Morphology in Self-Assembling Block Copolymer Gels for Templating Nanoporous Ceramics

The self-assembly of block copolymers offers opportunities for the facile organization and templating of inorganic nanomaterials. Here, we describe a morphology map for a poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-poly(n-butyl acrylate)-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA-b-PnBA-b-PMMA) block copolymer/polycarbosilane system that allows for tunable control over nanoscale micelle geometry via manipulation of the preceramic polymer content. We produced gels with spherical, wormlike, and bicontinuous morphologies, which were processed to create silicon carbide-based ceramic structures with tunable nanoscale porosities. The role of the constituent polymers in influencing the structure and rheology of this system is discussed. The PMMA-b-PnBA-b-PMMA block copolymer/preceramic polymer system offers a number of advantages including: (i) commercial availability, (ii) rapid self-assembly kinetics, and (iii) successful conversion of the self-assembled nanostructure to ceramic via pyrolysis. Finally, this system may be useful for catalytic, structural, or thermal applications in both industrial and academic settings because of its ease of use and relatively inexpensive reagents.

Tailoring Lifetimes and Properties of Carbodiimide-Fueled Covalently Cross-linked Polymer Networks

The mechanical properties of nonequilibrium polymer hydrogels obtained from the transient cross-linking of polymer chains by a chemical fuel were investigated. Aqueous polymers featuring pendant carboxylic acids were treated with a carbodiimide to give anhydride-cross-linked gels. The anhydrides spontaneously hydrolyze back to the polymer solution, and the cycle can be repeated multiple times. Oscillatory rheology was employed to study the effects of temperature, fuel concentration, chain length, and polymer composition on the storage and loss moduli of the polymeric materials as well as the time taken for the polymers to undergo decross-linking. Regardless of the temperature used, at constant carbodiimide concentration, degelation times are more sensitive to experimental temperature than are the peak storage moduli. Decross-linking times decrease with increasing temperature. As carbodiimide concentration decreases, there is a decrease in moduli and decross-linking times. Within the scope of materials studied, the polymer structure was found to have a relatively small impact on the transient properties of gel networks compared to the fuel concentration and temperature. Furthermore, these findings facilitate the design of tunable on-demand networks and gels.
