Intermediate Fidelity Closed Brayton Cycle Power Conversion Model

This paper describes the implementation of an intermediate fidelity model of a closed Brayton Cycle power conversion system (Closed Cycle System Simulation). The simulation is developed within the Numerical Propulsion Simulation System architecture using component elements from earlier models. Of particular interest, and power, is the ability of this new simulation system to initiate a more detailed analysis of compressor and turbine components automatically and to incorporate the overall results into the general system simulation.

Solar Power Satellite antenna phase control system hardware simulation, phase 4. Volume 2: Analytical simulation of SPS system performance

The pilot signal parameter optimization and power transponder analyses are presented. The SPS antenna phase control system is modeled and the hardware simulation study described. Ionospheric and system phase error effects and the effects of high power amplifier phase and amplitude jitters are considered. Parameter optimization of the spread spectrum receiver, consisting of the carrier tracking loop and the code tracking loop, is described.

History of visual systems in the Systems Engineering Simulator

The Systems Engineering Simulator (SES) houses a variety of real-time computer generated visual systems. The earliest machine dates from the mid-1960's and is one of the first real-time graphics systems in the world. The latest acquisition is the state-of-the-art Evans and Sutherland CT6. Between the span of time from the mid-1960's to the late 1980's, tremendous strides have been made in the real-time graphics world. These strides include advances in both software and hardware engineering. The purpose is to explore the history of the development of these real-time computer generated image systems from the first machine to the present. Hardware advances as well as software algorithm changes are presented. This history is not only quite interesting but also provides us with a perspective with which we can look backward and forward.

Dehydrohalogenation of atmospheric contaminants in the space cabin

A total of nine chlorinated ethanes and ethenes were circulated over lithium hydroxide in a laboratory scale closed system simulator. System volume and lithium hydroxide temperature were varied from that intended to maximize possible reactions to conditions approximating those of a space cabin environment. Of the nine compounds tested, seven were found to be dehydrohalogenated (viz., loss of hydrogen chloride) in the course of one or more experimental treatments. Of particular significance was the conversion of 1,2-dichloroethane to chloroethene, a known carcinogen, and of trichloroethene to dichloroethyne, a highly toxic substance. It is therefore concluded that a potentially hazardous situation exists for the inhabitants of closed ecological systems such as spacecraft, one for which precautions must continue to be taken.
