Energy supply and its effect on aircraft of the future. II - Liquid-hydrogen-fueled aircraft: Prospects and design issues.

The performance of hydrogen-fueled commercial aircraft is examined in the subsonic, supersonic, and hypersonic speed regime and compared with JP-fueled systems. Hydrogen aircraft are shown to provide substantial improvements in range and payload fraction as well as to minimize or eliminate many environmental problems. The major elements of a development program required to make hydrogen-fueled aircraft a commercial reality are also outlined and the rationale for and characteristics of both a subsonic demonstrator and a high speed research airplane are described.

The development of a non-cryogenic nitrogen/oxygen supply system

A hydrazine/water electrolysis process system module design was fabricated and tested to demonstrate component and module performance. This module is capable of providing both the metabolic oxygen for crew needs and the oxygen and nitrogen for spacecraft leak makeup. The component designs evolved through previous R and D efforts, and were fabricated and tested individually and then were assembled into a complete module which was successfully tested for 1000 hours to demonstrate integration of the individual components. A survey was made of hydrazine sensor technology and a cell math model was derived.

Results from investigations in the NASA/MSFC TWT on a .004 scale model space shuttle launch vehicle (model 13P-OTS) to determine gas supply strut effects on model pressure environment (IA53)

The Rockwell Space Shuttle Launch Vehicle components were tested in a Trisonic Wind Tunnel. Pressure measurements were made on the aft portion, in the base regions, and on the wing surfaces. Axial force determination were made from the pressure data. Data were recorded with the model at zero degrees angle of attack and sideslip through a Mach number from 0.9 to 3.0. The only configuration changes investigated were strut mounting techniques and gas line fairing location between the external tank and the orbiter.

The design and development of a high voltage power supply

A high voltage circuit system was redesigned, breadboarded, and tested to meet revised specification requirements. Circuit component subassemblies are described and include the firing unit, regulator, dc to dc converter, and output and trigger circuits. Design changes, tests, and equipment fabrication are outlined chronologically by month. A list of design specifications is included.

Potable water supply

The history and evolution of the Apollo potable water system is reviewed. Its operation in the space environment and in the spacecraft is described. Its performance is evaluated. The Apollo potable water system satisfied the dual purpose of providing metabolic water for the crewmen and water for spacecraft cooling.

Future US energy demands based upon traditional consumption patterns lead to requirements which significantly exceed domestic supply

Energy consumption in the United States has risen in response to both increasing population and to increasing levels of affluence. Depletion of domestic energy reserves requires consumption modulation, production of fossil fuels, more efficient conversion techniques, and large scale transitions to non-fossile fuel energy sources. Widening disparity between the wealthy and poor nations of the world contributes to trends that increase the likelihood of group action by the lesser developed countries to achieve political and economic goals. The formation of anticartel cartels is envisioned.

Assurance of lubricant supply in wet-lubricated space bearings

Conventional lubrication techniques appear to be satisfactory, but rigorous proof of meeting a ten-year life requirement is lacking. One approach provides additional lubricant only when commanded from ground control, while the other passively augments lubrication at all times. Each technique has specific advantages, and selection should be related to the application to obtain optimum performance.

Very low-power power supplies

Unit may be used in systems requiring milliwatt power for bias voltage functions and can be used as control mechanism for large electric power systems. Logic and energy storage techniques yield processing efficiencies of 1000 to 1 over conventional designs.

Cryogenic Hydrogen/helium Storage and Supply System, Phase 1

An existing cryogenic tank was refurbished, microspheres were installed in the tank annulus, and the thermal performance of the unit was tested. The performance data was compared with NRC-2 multilayer insulation and low emittance aluminized surfaces installed in tanks of the same basic design. The cryogenic tank modified during the program was originally designed for the Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL) Program, and subsequently modified by vacuum-depositing aluminum on all annulus surfaces and leaving out the NRC-2 multilayer insulation. It is concluded that the application of aluminized-microsphere insulation is not yet very predictable for tank design purposes, especially at LH2 temperature and in the presence of a vapor-cooled shield.

Monitoring systems for community water supplies

Water monitoring system includes equipment and techniques for waste water sampling sensors for determining levels of microorganisms, oxygen, chlorine, and many other important parameters. System includes data acquisition and display system that allows computation of water quality information for real time display.

Development of a non-cryogenic nitrogen/oxygen supply system

Modular components were refined or replaced to improve the performance of the electrolysis module in a system which generates both oxygen and hydrogen from hydrazine hydrate. Significant mechanical and electrical performance improvements were achieved in the cathode. Improvements were also made in the phase separation area but at considerable cost in time and money and to the detriment of other investigative areas. Only the pump/bubble separator failed in a manner necessitating redesign. Its failure was, however, due to its being operated above the temperature range for which it was designed. The basic electrolysis cell design was not changed.

Stationary diesel engines for use with generators to supply electric power

The procurement of stationary diesel engines for on-site generation of electric power deals with technical criteria and policy relating to federal agency, not electrical components of diesel-generator sets or for the design of electric-power generating plants or their air-pollution or noise control equipment.

Demand-type gas supply system for rocket borne thin-window proportional counters

A simple closed loop control system has been developed to maintain the gas pressure in thin-window proportional counters during rocket flights. This system permits convenient external control of detector pressure and system flushing rate. The control system is activated at launch with the sealing of a reference volume at the existing system pressure. Inflight control to plus or minus 2 torr at a working pressure of 760 torr has been achieved on six rocket flights.

Dust from periodic comet Encke - Large grains in short supply

A photographic observation of periodic comet Encke is analyzed which reveals the emission of large dust grains from the comet. Photometric reduction of the photographic plate is described, and a two-dimensional isodensitometer scan of P/Encke is presented. An analytical expression is obtained for the average mass-loss rate of the dust over the revolution period of about 1200 days. A comparison of the results for P/Encke with previous results for P/d'Arrest indicates that both comets shed dust at just about equal average rates. It is concluded that the current contribution of P/Encke to the interplanetary dust is quite negligible if the dust particles reflect more than 1% of light and that smaller dust grains probably tend to contribute more mass than larger grains.
