Evolution of magnetic loops associated with coronal mass ejections involves a redistribution of solar magnetic helicity. The conservation of magnetic helicity then implies that ejection of helicity into the solar wind has to be accompanied by encapture of an equal amount of helicity of opposite sign at the Sun. A simple model is constructed which icludes this effect and other MHD effects on the evolution of magnetic helicity.
Due to the constant observation environment and low energy access of Sun-Earth libration point orbits, they have become extremely popular for many NASA science missions. The nonlinearity and instability of the orbits have made mission analysis more difficult as traditional approximations are no longer applicable. But the sensitivity of the orbits also provides greater flexibility in orbit design. Some typical mission trajectories are examined.
Project SUN is part of NASA's 'Mission to Planet Earth' education outreach effort. It is based on development of low cost, scientifi- cally accurate instrumentation and computer interfacing, coupled with Apple II computers as dedicated data loggers. The project is com- prised of: instruments, interfacing, software, curriculum, a detailed operating manual, and a system of training at the school sites.
Radio occultation and white-light measurements have shown that the solar corona comprises three distinction morphological regions in path-integrated density: streamer, quiet Sun, and polar coronal hole.
It has long been recognized that a Solar Polar mission passing over the poles of the Sun is also needed to complete our understanding of the three dimensioal structure of the corona and the heliosphere.
