The fast camera (Fastcam) imaging diagnostic systems on the DIII-D tokamak

Two camera systems are installed on the DIII-D tokamak at the toroidal positions of 90° (90° system) and 225° (225° system), respectively. The cameras have two types of relay optics, namely, a coherent optical fiber bundle and a periscope system. The periscope system provides absolute intensity calibration stability while sacrificing resolution (10 lp/mm), while the fiber system provides high resolution (16 lp/mm) while sacrificing calibration stability. The periscope is available only for the 90° system. The optics of the 225° system were designed for view stability, repeatability, and easy maintenance. The cameras are located inside optimized neutron, x ray and magnetic shielding in order to reduce electronics damage, reboots, and magnetic and neutron interference, increasing the overall system reliability. An automated filter wheel, providing remote filter change, allows for remote wavelength selection. A software suite automates camera acquisition and data storage, allowing for remote operation and reduced operator involvement. System metadata is used to streamline the data analysis workflow, particularly for intensity calibration. Here, the spatial calibration uses multiple observable wall features, resulting in a reconstruction accuracy ≤2 cm.

A NICER View of the Massive Pulsar PSR J0740+6620 Informed by Radio Timing and XMM-Newton Spectroscopy

We report on Bayesian estimation of the radius, mass, and hot surface regions of the massive millisecond pulsar PSR J0740+6620, conditional on pulse-profile modeling of Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer X-ray Timing Instrument event data. We condition on informative pulsar mass, distance, and orbital inclination priors derived from the joint North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves and Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment/Pulsar wideband radio timing measurements of Fonseca et al. We use XMM-Newton European Photon Imaging Camera spectroscopic event data to inform our X-ray likelihood function. The prior support of the pulsar radius is truncated at 16 km to ensure coverage of current dense matter models. We assume conservative priors on instrument calibration uncertainty. We constrain the equatorial radius and mass of PSR J0740+6620 to be ${12.39}_{-0.98}^{+1.30}$ km and ${2.072}_{-0.066}^{+0.067}$ M ⊙ respectively, each reported as the posterior credible interval bounded by the 16% and 84% quantiles, conditional on surface hot regions that are non-overlapping spherical caps of fully ionized hydrogen atmosphere with uniform effective temperature; a posteriori, the temperature is ${\mathrm{log}}_{10}(T\,[{\rm{K}}])={5.99}_{-0.06}^{+0.05}$ for each hot region. All software for the X-ray modeling framework is open-source and all data, model, and sample information is publicly available, including analysis notebooks and model modules in the Python language. Furthermore, our marginal likelihood function of mass and equatorial radius is proportional to the marginal joint posterior density of those parameters (within the prior support) and can thus be computed from the posterior samples.

DUNE – Simulation Validation of Fermilab Detector Reconstruction

DUNE (Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment) is Fermilab’s flagship international experiment designed to study neutrinos by sending an intense beam from Illinois to detectors located 1,300 kilometers away at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in South Dakota. To prepare for such a large-scale experiment, physicists develop detailed simulations to produce mock data sets which are analyzed by the CAFAna framework. During my internship, I developed software using the CAFAna framework to analyze simulated detector data and generated plots to make data trends easier to interpret and identify patterns. My analysis has uncovered inconsistencies in reconstructed neutrino tracks, duplicated reconstructed tracks causing sporadic spikes in the data, and unnatural differences in energy levels between interaction types. These analyses help verify that the improvements to detector simulations do not introduce unintended resolution errors and ensure proper reconstruction performance, supporting DUNE’s goal of making precise neutrino measurements and advancing the Department of Energy’s mission of fundamental scientific discovery.

AtomAI framework for deep learning analysis of image and spectroscopy data in electron and scanning probe microscopy

Over the past several decades, electron and scanning probe microscopes have become critical components of condensed matter physics, materials science and chemistry research. At the same time, the infrastructure for establishing a connection between microscopy observations and materials behaviour over a broader parameter space is lacking. In this work, we introduce AtomAI, an open-source software package bridging instrument-specific Python libraries, deep learning and simulation tools into a single ecosystem. AtomAI allows direct applications of deep neural networks for atomic and mesoscopic image segmentation converting image and spectroscopy data into class-based local descriptors for downstream tasks such as statistical and graph analysis. For atomically resolved imaging data, the output is types and positions of atomic species, with an option for subsequent refinement. AtomAI further allows the implementation of a broad range of image and spectrum analysis functions, including invariant variational autoencoders for disentangling structural factors of variation and im2spec type of encoder–decoder models for mapping structure–property relationships. Finally, our framework allows seamless connection to the first principles modelling with a Python interface on the inferred atomic positions.

RUScal : Software for the analysis of resonant ultrasound spectroscopy measurements

Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy is used to nondestructively measure the elastic resonances of small solids to elucidate the material's elastic properties or other qualities like size, shape, or composition. In this work, we introduce the software RUScal for the purpose of determining elastic properties by analyzing the eigenfrequencies of solid specimens with common shapes, such as rectangular parallelepipeds, cylinders (solid and hollow tube), ellipsoids, and octahedrons, as well as irregularly shaped ellipsoids that can be described analytically. All symmetry classes are supported, from isotropic to triclinic, along with the option to add or remove up to three orthogonal mirror planes as well as the ability to reorient the crystal axes with respect the sample edges via Euler angles. Additional features include tools to help find initial sets of elastic constants, including grid exploration and Monte Carlo methods, a tool to analyze frequencies as a function of sample length or crystal orientation, an error analysis tool to assess fit quality, and formatting of the input and output files for batch fitting, e.g., as a function of temperature. This software was validated with published resonant ultrasound spectroscopy data for various materials, shapes, and symmetries with noted improvements in calculation time compared to finite element methods.

Trigger-DAQ and Slow Controls Systems in the Mu2e Experiment

The muon campus program at Fermilab includes the Mu2e experiment that will search for a charged-lepton flavor violating processes where a negative muon converts into an electron in the field of an aluminum nucleus, improving by four orders of magnitude the search sensitivity reached so far. Mu2e's Trigger and Data Acquisition System (TDAQ) uses otsdaq as its solution. Developed at Fermilab, otsdaq uses the artdaq DAQ framework and art analysis framework, under the-hood, for event transfer, filtering, and processing. otsdaq is an online DAQ software suite with a focus on flexibility and scalability, while providing a multi-user, web-based, interface accessible through the Chrome or Firefox web browser. The detector Read Out Controller (ROC), from the tracker and calorimeter, stream out zero-suppressed data continuously to the Data Transfer Controller (DTC). Data is then read over the PCIe bus to a software filter algorithm that selects events which are finally combined with the data flux that comes froma Cosmic Ray Ve to System (CRV). A Detector Control System (DCS) for monitoring, controlling, alarming, and archiving has been developed using the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS) Open Source Platform. The DCS System has also been itegrated into otsdaq. The installation of the TDAQ and the DCS systems in the Mu2e building is planned for 2021-2022, and a prototype has been built at Fermilab's Feynman Computing Center. We report here on the developments and achievements of the integration of Mu2e's DCS system into the online otsdaq software.

Evaluating the Feasibility of Transactive Approach for Voltage Management Using Inverters of a PV Plant

This article evaluates the feasibility of a double-auction-based Transactive Energy System (TES) for engaging the reactive power (Var) capability of inverters in a utility-scale pho¬tovoltaic (PV) plant for voltage management in distribution feed¬ers. In this approach, a PV plant owner (seller) provides Var supply curves in terms of price-quantity pairs consider¬ing the inverters’ P-Q capability, efficiency, opportunity cost for real power curtail¬ment, losses, etc. At the same time, the utility (buyer) proposes Var demand curves in price-quantity pairs exhibiting the marginal price of Var. Then, market clearing points are obtained from the intersection points of supply and demand curves which are then used to create Var dispatch sig-nals from the PV plant. To conduct a fea¬sibility study of this approach, an Australian distribution network with a utility-scale PV plant (capacity 3.275 MWP) is modeled in RSCAD and simu¬lated in real-time on MATLAB, RSCAD-RTDS co-simulation platform using real historical data. Consid¬ering a use case, namely, conservation voltage reduction (CVR), the operational feasibility along with cost-benefit analysis is demonstrated in software-in-the-loop (SIL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) platform. Another use case, exploring the benefit from tap-change reduction of step-voltage-regulator, is investigated. These studies explore further use cases, e.g., PV hosting capacity, network reconfiguration, etc., to be incorporated in TES for experiencing substantial economic benefits.

Production Operations Management System (POMS) for Fermilab Experiments

The Production Operations Management System (POMS) software allows production teams and analysis groups across multiple Fermilab experiments to launch, modify and monitor large scale campaigns of related Monte Carlo or data processing jobs, and currently manages the majority of production computing of experiments at Fermilab.POMS provides a web service interface that enables automated job submission on distributed resources according to customers’ requests, as well as subsequent monitoring of those submissions as well as recovery of failed submissions, debugging and record keeping.POMS interfaces with existing HEP data access, processing, movement and monitoring tools at Fermilab, including Jobsub (for job submission), SAM (for data management), and Landscape (for monitoring), and in combination with them handles the creation of intermediate datasets of files for multistage campaigns.POMS visualizes these campaigns with an interactive GUI interface. An important feature of POMS is a one-to-one connection between the GUI campaign visualizer and a text based representation of the complete campaign configuration. An extensible library of template campaign configurations is available. The templates are user modifiable and map cleanly to and from the GUI description of the campaign. This paper will discuss the current usage, history, and some technical details of POMS, as well as planned future extensions, particularly interfacing with Rucio as well as SAM for file movement.

Baycal

Bayesian Model Calibration (BayCal) toolkit is a software plugin for Risk Analysis Virtual Environment (RAVEN) framework, arming at inversely quantifying the uncertainties associated with simulation model parameters based on available experiment data. BayCal seeks statistical inference of the uncertain input parameters that are consistent with the available measurement data or observed data. The unique feature of BayCal is the capability to be linked with RAVEN to build corresponding calibration workflows for complex multi-physics simulations. In addition to be able to use the machine learning capability of RAVEN to significantly reduce the computational cost of expensive simulation models, another distinctive feature of BayCal is the capability to deal with high-dimensional correlated model outputs, such as time series observations at multiple locations, via principal component analysis (PCA) technique.

H420 Imager Calibration Procedure: Field of View Scan

Gamma-ray imagers with coded apertures have a finite field of view (FOV) within which an image of a source can be generated. A “FOV scan” is a facet of imager calibration procedure that involves collecting specialized data for a range of source locations filling the FOV in order to understand and correct for differences in imager performance. Systematic distortions reveal relative displacements between internal imager components, which can be accounted for in data analysis. The success of this scan requires a stable imager position during the full measurement duration (~hours). This document summarizes the hardware and software tools required to conduct a FOV calibration scan of an H3D H420 Coded Aperture Gamma-Ray Imager.

Detector Instrumentation, Energy Reconstruction and Data Analysis in the DUNE and NOvA Neutrino Experiments

Neutrino oscillations are so far the only experimental observation beyond the standard model since its development four decades ago. The remaining fundamental questions that can be answered by long-baseline neutrino oscillations are (1) the CP violation (whether neutrinos and antineutrinos behave the same way in oscillation), and (2) the mass hierarchy ($m_3>m_{1,2}$ or $m_{1,2}>m_3$), and (3) the octant of $\theta_{23}$ ($\theta_{23}>45^\circ, =45^\circ$ or $<45^\circ$). The PI's group at UCI focuses on long-baseline neutrino experiments DUNE and NOvA, key components of DOE's Intensity Frontier program. NOvA is the current major U.S.-based long-baseline neutrino experiment aiming to solve the mass hierarchy and $\theta_{23}$ octant. It is taking $\nu$ and $\bar{\nu}$ data from the NuMI beam at Fermilab. DUNE is the next-generation flagship neutrino experiment in the U.S. which is designed to decisively determine neutrino CP violation, mass hierarchy and $\theta_{23}$ octant. DUNE is Fermilab's first priority, and has been established as an international collaboration. During the period covered by the report, the PI's group has been exceptionally productive, with leading contributions to DUNE argon-purity monitoring detectors, NOvA/DUNE deep-learning reconstruction, and NOvA oscillation and near detector (ND) analyses. The group also is actively involved in DUNE/NOvA detector operation, data production, calibration, software upgrade and maintenance, and ProtoDUNE cold electronic QA/QC. Specifically, we have made accomplishments in the following four research projects: 1) Purity monitor R\&D and data analysis for DUNE, 2) Deep-learning-based energy reconstruction at NOvA and DUNE, 3) Oscillation analysis at NOvA, and 4) $\nu$-e elastic scattering analysis at NOvA.

TDCOSMO. X. Automated modeling of nine strongly lensed quasars and comparison between lens-modeling software

When strong gravitational lenses are to be used as an astrophysical or cosmological probe, models of their mass distributions are often needed. We present a new, time-efficient automation code for the uniform modeling of strongly lensed quasars with GLEE, a lens-modeling software for multiband data. By using the observed positions of the lensed quasars and the spatially extended surface brightness distribution of the host galaxy of the lensed quasar, we obtain a model of the mass distribution of the lens galaxy. We applied this uniform modeling pipeline to a sample of nine strongly lensed quasars for which images were obtained with the Wide Field Camera 3 of the Hubble Space Telescope. The models show well-reconstructed light components and a good alignment between mass and light centroids in most cases. We find that the automated modeling code significantly reduces the input time during the modeling process for the user. The time for preparing the required input files is reduced by a factor of 3 from ~3 h to about one hour. The active input time during the modeling process for the user is reduced by a factor of 10 from ~ 10 h to about one hour per lens system. This automated uniform modeling pipeline can efficiently produce uniform models of extensive lens-system samples that can be used for further cosmological analysis. A blind test that compared our results with those of an independent automated modeling pipeline based on the modeling software Lenstronomy revealed important lessons. Quantities such as Einstein radius, astrometry, mass flattening, and position angle are generally robustly determined. Other quantities, such as the radial slope of the mass density profile and predicted time delays, depend crucially on the quality of the data and on the accuracy with which the point spread function is reconstructed. Better data and/or a more detailed analysis are necessary to elevate our automated models to cosmography grade. Nevertheless, our pipeline enables the quick selection of lenses for follow-up and further modeling, which significantly speeds up the construction of cosmography-grade models. This important step forward will help us to take advantage of the increase in the number of lenses that is expected in the coming decade, which is an increase of several orders of magnitude.

Nuclear Software Validation for 7% Enriched UO 2 Fuel Lattices

This analysis performs validation for the Virtual Environment for Reaction Application’s (VERA’s) neutronics codes MPACT and Shift against measured data from the Seven Percent Critical Experiment (7uPCX) at Sandia National Laboratory. The benchmarking supports the future application of VERA for analysis of high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel in commercial pressurized water reactors (PWRs). VERA demonstrates very good agreement with measured data, and the deterministic code MPACT also agrees very well with higher-fidelity stochastic methods KENO-VI and Shift in both total neutron flux and fission rate distribution comparisons. Despite some significant differences between the 7uPCX and existing commercial PWRs that challenge the neutron cross section data and transport solver methods used by MPACT, all of the results are excellent. The agreement increases the confidence in the applicability and accuracy of VERA for reactor analysis of HALEU fuels in commercial reactors.

Modeling, Load Profile Validation, and Assessment of Solar-Rooftop Energy Potential for Low-and-Moderate-Income Communities in the Caribbean

This document presents the modeling of load profile consumption for Low-and-Moderate-Income (LMI) communities in the Caribbean Islands, as well as an assessment of the solar-rooftop energy potential. In this work, real data, together with synthetic and electricity bill data, were collected to validate and improve the load profile models. The solar-rooftop energy potential was obtained through a National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) software called the PVWatts calculator, and mathematical analysis. The analysis of rooftop solar energy potential was conducted to enable the minimum size of solar power systems to fit the energy demand in the community. The results obtained allow estimation of the capacity of the energy system for each house or an entire community.
