Intermediate-mass Early-type Disk Galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. II. Near-Infrared Spectra and Evidence for Differences in Evolution

We discuss near-infrared (NIR) slit spectra of six early-type disk galaxies in the Virgo Cluster that were examined previously at visible/red wavelengths. Despite having similar intrinsic luminosities, colors, and morphologies, the NIR spectrophotometric properties of these galaxies indicate that they are not a homogeneous ensemble differing only in terms of luminosity-weighted age and metallicity. While the depth of the CO(2,0) band is consistent with the centers of these galaxies having solar or slightly sub-solar luminosity-weighted metallicities, galaxy-to-galaxy variations in the depth of the Na i 2.21 μm doublet are found, with Na i2.21 μm lines in three galaxies (NGC 4491, NGC 4584, and NGC 4620) that are deeper than those predicted for a solar chemical mixture and a solar-neighborhood mass function. In contrast, the Ca i2.26 μm triplet shows good galaxy-to-galaxy agreement but tends to be deeper than the model prediction. Considering the depth of the NaD lines, the deep Na i2.21 μm lines are tentatively attributed to a bottom-heavy mass function. This is counter to observed trends between mass function slope and velocity dispersion, and so the possibility of a super-solar [Na/Fe] is also discussed. Two of the three galaxies with deep Na i 2.21 μm (NGC 4584 and NGC 4620) have Sérsic exponents that are consistent with a classical bulge. As for NGC 4491, its central NIR spectrum contains prominent emission lines. The relative strengths of Brγ and H{sub 2}S(1), the presence of [Fe ii] emission, and the mid-infrared spectral-energy distribution are all consistent with intense recent star formation near the center of that galaxy. The NIR spectrum of NGC 4584 is devoid of line emission in the NIR, suggesting that star formation does not power the emission detected at visible wavelengths from that galaxy. Wavelengths that contain the Ballick–Ramsey C{sub 2} band at 1.76 μm are matched by moderately metal-poor E-MILES model spectra with an age of 2 Gyr. The radial age trends in these galaxies are in the opposite sense to those in late-type disk galaxies, and it is concluded that they have evolved in a cluster environment for at least several Gyr.

Spatially Resolved Velocity Structures in Jets of DF Tau and UY Aur A

Young stars accrete mass and angular momentum from their circumstellar disks. Some of them also drive outflows, which can be distinguished in optical forbidden emission lines. We analyze a sample of binary T Tauri stars observed with long-slit spectroscopy by the Hubble Space Telescope between 1998 and 2000, searching for spatially resolved outflows. We detect resolved [O i] emission in 2 cases out of 21. In DF Tau we resolve high- and medium-velocity outflows in a jet and counterjet out to 60 au. The outflows are accelerated within the inner 12 au and retain a constant speed thereafter. In UY Aur, we detect a blue- and a redshifted outflow from UY Aur A, as well as a blueshifted jet from UY Aur B. All of these features have been seen in [Fe ii] with data taken 10 years apart indicating that the underlying outflow pattern is stable on these timescales.

The Near-infrared Spectrum of the Nuclear Star Cluster: Looking below the Tip of the Iceberg, and Comparisons with Extragalactic Nuclei

Long-slit near-infrared (NIR) spectra of the Galactic nuclear star cluster (NSC) are discussed. The spectra sample the major axis of the NSC out to its half-light radius. The absorption spectrum of the central regions of the NSC is averaged over angular scales of tens of arc seconds in order to sample globular cluster-like total luminosities, and the results are compared with model spectra. The equivalent widths of Na i2.21 μm and Ca 2.26 μm outside of the center of the NSC, where light from nuclear bulge stars contributes a large fraction to the total flux, are consistent with solar chemical mixtures. In contrast, the equivalent widths of Na i2.21 μm and Ca i2.26 μm near the center of the NSC are larger than expected from models with solar chemical mixtures, even after light from the brightest evolved stars is removed. The depths of spectroscopic features changing along the major axis of the NSC are consistent with imaging studies that have found evidence of population gradients in the NSC. That Na i2.21 μm and Ca i2.26 μm are deeper than predicted for solar chemical mixtures over a range of evolutionary states is consistent with previous studies that find that the majority of stars near the center of the NSC formed from material that had nonsolar chemical mixtures. The depths of the Na i2.21 μm and Ca i2.26 μm features in the central regions of the NSC are comparable to those in the nuclear spectrum of the early-type Virgo disk galaxy NGC 4491, and are deeper than in the central spectra of NGC 253 and 7793. A spectrum of nebular emission and the youngest stars near the galactic center is also extracted. The equivalent widths of emission features in the extracted NIR spectrum are similar to those in the nuclear spectrum of NGC 253, and it is argued that this agreement is best achieved if the current episode of star formation near the center of the NSC has been in progress for at least a few megayears.

NGC 6845 Revisited: Stellar Kinematics on the Early Type Member Galaxies

We observed the compact group of galaxies NGC 6845 with GMOS-S imaging and long-slit spectroscopy. The group itself is comprised of two spiral galaxies and two S0 galaxies, and shows signs of gravitational interaction among them. While the spiral galaxies have been already well studied, the two S0 galaxies have received little attention. We investigate the morphology and stellar kinematics of the two S0 galaxies in detail in order to derive the value for their mass and subsequently incorporate them into the mass model for the group. It was found that the internal kinematics of the largest S0 (NGC 6845 C) is mostly regular, while the smallest S0 (NGC 6845 D) shows some hint of interaction, most likely with NGC 6845 C and NGC 6845 A. The new determination of the dynamical mass of the group implies that the group mass has to be 10 times the combined mass of the individual members according to their internal kinematics. The results point to an early stage of the group interaction and also to the possibility that it has still not reached virial equilibrium. From the galaxy evolution viewpoint, this group represents an example of the case of the transformation of Spirals into S0 galaxies in dense environments.

Resolving the Circumstellar Environment of the Galactic B[e] Supergiant Star MWC 137.II. Nebular Kinematics and Stellar Variability

The Galactic B[e] supergiant MWC 137 is surrounded by a large-scale optical nebula. To shed light on the physical conditions and kinematics of the nebula, we analyze the optical forbidden emission lines [N ii] λ λ 6548,6583 and [S ii] λ λ 6716,6731 in long-slit spectra taken with ALFOSC at the Nordic Optical Telescope. The radial velocities display a complex behavior but, in general, the northern nebular features are predominantly approaching while the southern ones are mostly receding. The electron density shows strong variations across the nebula with values spreading from about zero to ~800 cm{sup -3}. Higher densities are found closer to MWC 137 and in regions of intense emission, whereas in regions with high radial velocities the density decreases significantly. We also observe the entire nebula in the two [S ii] lines with the scanning Fabry–Perot interferometer attached to the 6 m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory. These data reveal a new bow-shaped feature at P.A. = 225°–245° and a distance 80" from MWC 137. A new Hα image has been taken with the Danish 1.54 m telescope on La Silla. No expansion or changes in the nebular morphology appear within 18.1 yr. We derive a mass of 37{sub -5}{sup +9} M{sub ⊙} and an age of 4.7 ± 0.8 Myr for MWC 137. Furthermore, we detect a period of 1.93 d in the time series photometry collected with the TESS satellite, which could suggest stellar pulsations. Other, low-frequency variability is seen as well. Whether these signals are caused by internal gravity waves in the early-type star or by variability in the wind and circumstellar matter currently cannot be distinguished.

The Stability of Fiber Spectrographs in the Faint-source Regime

The use of optical fibers in astronomical instrumentation offers high-multiplex and light-gathering flexibility. However, with most previous fiber spectrographs optimized for large fields of view on modest-aperture telescopes, the performance of fibers in the context of faint targets on large telescopes remains largely untested. In this paper, we evaluate aspects of fiber stability, especially as they apply in the context of precision sky subtraction of faint sources at modest spectral resolution ($R$ ~ 3000). After introducing a framework for describing potential systematic errors, we use publicly available data from existing instruments, including instrumentation used by the fourth-generation Sloan Digital Sky Survey’s MaNGA project (MaNGA: Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory) and the Very Large Telescope’s FLAMES: Fiber Large Array Multi Element Spectrograph. We isolate sources of fiber systematics and estimate the observed amplitude of persistent residuals as well as stochastic noise contributions resulting from changing fiber stresses. Comparing these levels against their impact on various sky subtraction schemes demonstrates that 0.1% precision sky subtraction with fiber instruments is possible. As a demonstration, we show that the MaNGA instrument can deliver 0.2% residuals on bright near-IR sky lines with nonlocal sky subtraction, if pseudo-slit limitations are addressed by allocating 50% of its fibers to sky. We further highlight recently published deep exposures that achieved a 1$σ$ background level of 27.6 AB per square arc second, equivalent to a precision of 0.2% of the sky background continuum.

The MASSIVE Survey. XVI. The Stellar Initial Mass Function in the Center of MASSIVE Early-type Galaxies

The stellar initial mass function (IMF) is a fundamental property in the measurement of stellar masses and galaxy star formation histories. In this work, we focus on the most massive galaxies in the nearby universe $\mathrm{log}({M}_{\star }/\,{M}_{\odot })\gt 11.2$. We obtain high-quality Magellan/LDSS-3 long-slit spectroscopy with a wide wavelength coverage of 0.4–1.01 μm for 41 early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the MASSIVE survey and derive high signal-to-noise spectra within an aperture of R e /8. Using detailed stellar synthesis models, we constrain the elemental abundances and stellar IMF of each galaxy through full spectral modeling. All the ETGs in our sample have an IMF that is steeper than a Milky Way (Kroupa) IMF. The best-fit IMF mismatch parameter, α IMF = (M/L)/(M/L) MW , ranges from 1.1 to 3.1, with an average of $\langle$α IMF $\rangle$ = 1.84, suggesting that on average, the IMF is more bottom heavy than Salpeter. Comparing the estimated stellar masses with the dynamical masses, we find that most galaxies have stellar masses that are smaller than their dynamical masses within the 1σ uncertainty. We complement our sample with lower-mass galaxies from the literature and confirm that $\mathrm{log}({\alpha }_{\mathrm{IMF}})$ is positively correlated with $\mathrm{log}(\sigma )$, $\mathrm{log}({M}_{\star })$, and $\mathrm{log}({M}_{\mathrm{dyn}})$. From the combined sample, we show that the IMF in the centers of more massive ETGs is more bottom heavy. In addition, we find that $\mathrm{log}({\alpha }_{\mathrm{IMF}})$ is positively correlated with both [Mg/Fe] and the estimated total metallicity [Z/H]. We find suggestive evidence that the effective stellar surface density Σ Kroupa might be responsible for the variation of α IMF . We conclude that σ, [Mg/Fe], and [Z/H] are the primary drivers of the global stellar IMF variation.

Monochromation of pulsed electron beams with terahertz radiation at a planar mirror

Exquisite control of electron beam energy is required for many electron spectroscopy and imaging applications. For both continuous and pulsed beams, the beam energy spread is fundamentally limited by the electron source, and is typically a sizable fraction of an electron-volt. In this paper, we present a means to reduce electron beam energy spread after emission to the level of a few 10s of meV rms using femtosecond photoemission and an interaction with laser-derived single- to few-cycle terahertz (THz) radiation. We show analytically and in particle tracking simulations that this interaction can remove energy spread stored in both the transverse and longitudinal degrees of freedom. We analytically formulate the limit of energy spread that this technique can achieve, and map the non-ideal affects arising at high frequencies. The interaction is mediated by the beam's passage through a mirror which is reflective to terahertz radiation but allows transmission of the majority of the electron beam (e.g. a wire mesh). This method then only requires beam current losses of a few tens of percent, far smaller than what is achieved in prism and slit-based electron monochromators.

Diagnostic development for parallel wave-number measurement of lower hybrid waves in EAST

An eight-channel magnetic probe diagnostic system has been designed and installed adjacent to the 4.6 GHz lower hybrid (LH) grill antenna in the low-field side of the EAST tokamak in order to study the n|| evolution of lower hybrid waves in the first pass from the launcher to the core plasma. The magnetic probes are separated by 6.6 mm, which allows measurement of the dominant parallel refractive index n|| up to n|| =5 for 4.6GHz LH waves. The magnetic probes are designed to be sensitive to the magnetic field component perpendicular to the background magnetic field with a slit on the casing that encloses the probe. The intermediate frequency (IF) stage, which consists of two mixing stages, down-coverts the frequency of the measured wave signals at 4.6 GHz to 20 MHz. A bench test demonstrates the phase stability of the magnetic probe diagnostic system. By evaluating the phase variation of the measured signals along the background magnetic field, the dominant n|| of the LH wave in the scrape-off layer (SOL) has been deduced during the 2019 experimental campaign. In the low density plasma, the measured dominant n|| of the lower hybrid waves is about 2.1, corresponding to the main peak 2.04 of the launched n|| spectrum. The n|| deduced by the least square linear fit method remains near this value in the low density plasma with a high spatial correlation magnitude of 0.9. With an eight-channel probe system a wave-number spectrum has also been deduced, which has a peak near to the measured dominant n||.

THE DETECTION OF WATER VAPOR ON MARS

We have found eleven weak lines of water vapor on a high dispersion near-infrared spectrogram of Mars taken at the coudè focus of the Mount Wilson 100-inch reflector on April 12/13,1963. We exposed 43 hours on ammoniated IV-N emulsion with a dispersion of 5.6 A/mm; the plate is well exposed at the poles and somewhat overexposed at the center of the planet’s disk. The Martian H 2 O lines in the X 8200 water-vapor band are displaced 0.42 A longward of their telluric counterparts due to the relative velocities of the earth and Mars: AV = +15 km/sec on that date. The Martian lines are strongest over the poles of the planet-we set the spectrograph slit daost north-south to cover both polar regions. This apparent polar strengthening of the Martian H 2 O lines is at least partially due to the increased air mass through the line of sight to high latitudes.

Improved source of infrared radiation for spectroscopy

Radiation from a crimped V-groove in the electrically heated metallic element of a high-resolution infrared spectrometer is more intense than that from plane areas adjacent to the element. Radiation from the vee and the flat was compared by alternately focusing on the entrance slit of a spectrograph.
