Portable lightweight cell provides controlled environment

Inflatable, lightweight cell provides a separate, secondary environment for a spacesuited man in case of spacesuit damage or malfunction. The cell has a pressure-sealing zipper and is equipped to maintain a livable atmosphere.

Shelton, S.↗

Portable Pulse Code Modulation /PCM/

Small, programmable, high speed PCM subsystem, supports the variety of signals inherent in sophisticated equipment. A signal generated by a transducer is first conditioned to the proper signal range, then sampled by an external multiplexer or by the subsystem directly and then converted and transmitted to a receiving station.

Bradanini, P. A.↗

Portable vibration exciter

Gas-driven vibration exciter produces a sinusoidal excitation function controllable in frequency and in amplitude. It allows direct vibration testing of components under normal loads, removing the possibility of component damage due to high static pressure.

Beecher, L. C.↗

Metal drilling with portable hand drills

Study of metal drilling solves problems of excessive burring, oversized holes, and out-of-round holes. Recommendations deal with using the proper chemical coolants, applying the coolants effectively, employing cutting oils, and dissipating the heat caused by drilling.

Edmiston, W. B.↗

Portable low-frequency vibration measuring and recording system

Information gathering system measures and records vibrations which affect personnel comfort in space, air, and surface vehicles. Three vibration transducers with mutually perpendicular axes control the frequency output of voltage controlled oscillators /VCO/. Outputs of VCO'S are multiplexed and then recorded on one track of stereo tape recorder.

Clevenson, S. A.↗

Portable lightweight bandsaw

Bandsaw of aluminum-6061 weighs about five kg and is operable by one or two men. Spiral blade cuts in any direction and at any angle. Hardness of materials to be cut is limited by material and dimension of blade.

Searle, H. J.↗

Portable circuit-interruption indicator

Device locates transient power interruptions occurring in electrical equipment. Indicator operates on principle that circuit in normal use retains residual current in the line prior to an interruption.

University role in astronaut life support systems: Portable thermal control systems

One of the most vital life support systems is that used to provide the astronaut with an adequate thermal environment. State-of-the-art techniques are reviewed for collecting and rejecting excess heat loads from the suited astronaut. Emphasis is placed on problem areas which exist and which may be suitable topics for university research. Areas covered include thermal control requirements and restrictions, methods of heat absorption and rejection or storage, and comparison between existing methods and possible future techniques.

Ephrath, A. R.↗

Portable life support for instrumentation of an offshore platform

A compressor was used to supply air through a nylon hose to the offshore platform field engineer working at the bottom of the piling. Air quality in the pile was sampled periodically for carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, and combustible gases by an universal tester and an explosion meter.

Mull, M. M.↗

Portable light detection system for the blind

System can be used to detect "ready" light on automatic cooking device, to tell if lights are on for visitors, or to tell whether it is daylight or dark outside. Device is actuated like flashlight. Light impinging on photo cell activates transistor which energizes buzzer to indicate presence of light.

Wilber, R. L.↗

Small portable speed calculator

Calculator is adapted stopwatch calibrated for fast accurate measurement of speeds. Single assembled unit is rugged, self-contained, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture. Potential market includes automobile-speed enforcement, railroads, and field-test facilities.

Burch, J. L.↗

Portable apparatus with CRT display for nondestructive testing of concrete by the ultrasonic pulse method

The development of methods for the nondestructive study of concrete structures is discussed. The nondestructive test procedure is based on the method of ultrasonic pulse transmission through the material. The measurements indicate that the elastic properties of concrete or other heterogeneous materials are a function of the rate of ultrasonic propagation. Diagrams of the test equipment are provided. Mathematical models are included to support the theoretical aspects.

Manta, G.↗

Low-cost, portable fire hose tester

Availability of pumping unit permits scheduling and performing required periodic hose tests in proper manner while retaining full fire equipment readiness. Use of pumping unit preserves operating life and capability of pumper truck.

Jocke, R. F.↗

Portable automatic blood analyzer

Analyzer employs chemical-sensing electrodes for determination of blood, gas, and ion concentrations. It is rugged, easily serviced, and comparatively simple to operate. System can analyze up to eight parameters and can be modified to measure other blood constituents including nonionic species, such as urea, glucose, and oxygen.

Coleman, R. L.↗

Technology assessment of portable energy RDT and P, phase 1

A technology assessment of transportation energy research, development, technology, and production was undertaken to assess the technical, economic, environmental, sociopolitical issues associated with transportation energy options, and to determine those courses of action impacting aviation and air transportation research and technology. A technology assessment workshop was used to determine the problem statements that would be considered. Study tasks are summarized along with the problem statements.
