IDAES enables users to efficiently search vast, complex design spaces to discover the lowest cost solutions while supporting the full process modeling lifecycle, from conceptual design to dynamic optimization and control. The extensible, open platform empowers users to create models of novel processes and rapidly develop custom analyses, workflows, and end-user applications. IDAES-PSE 2.6.0 Release Highlights Upcoming Changes IDAES will be switching to the new Pyomo solver interface in the next release. Whilst this will hopefully be a smooth transition for most users, there are a few important changes to be aware of. The new solver interface uses a different version of the IPOPT writer (“ipopt_v2”) and thus any custom configuration options you might have set for IPOPT will not carry over and will need to be reset. By default, the new Pyomo linear presolver will be activated with ipopt_v2. Whilst are working to identify any bugs in the presolver, it is possible that some edge cases will remain. IDAES will begin deploying a new set of scaling tools and APIs over the next few releases that make use of the new solver writers. The old scaling tools and APIs will remain for backward compatibility but will begin to be deprecated. New Models, Tools and Features New Intersphinx extension automatically linking Jupyter notebook examples to project documentation New end-to-end diagnostics example demonstrated on a real problem New complementarity formulation for VLE with cubic equations of state, backward compatibility for old formulation New solver interface with presolve (ipopt_v2) in support of upcoming changes to the initialization and APIs methods, with default set to ipopt to maintain backwards compatibility; this will deprecate once all examples have been updated New forecaster and parameterized bidder methods within grid integration library Updated surrogates API and examples to support Keras 3, with backwards compatibility for older formats such as TensorFlow SavedModel (TFSM) Updated costing base dictionary to include the 2023 cost year index value Updated ProcessBlock to include information on the constructing block class Updated Flowsheet Visualizer to allow visualize() method to return value and functions Bug Fixes Fixed bug in the Modular Property Framework that would cause errors when trying to use phase-based material balances with phase equilibria. Development of Tunable, Precision Permanent Magnet Phase Shifter for X-Ray FEL

In an X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL), a high quality relativistic electron beam from a linear accelerator traverses an array of undulator magnets to generate a high power X-ray beam by allowing the FEL to reach saturation. In many XFELs, phase shifters haven’t been commonly used or included in their designs. The importance of the phase shifter was recognized only recently. A phase shifter can be constructed using either an electromagnet (EM) or a permanent magnet (PM). EM phase shifters are heavy, complex to operate, and take more valuable longitudinal space between the undulators. Compared to EMs, the PMs have several outstanding advantages, including compactness, lighter weights, simple operation, and low maintenance. This project has developed an innovative design of fixed-gap, tunable PM-based compact phase shifter for the XFEL. While keeping the poles and gap fixed, the new design incorporates proven features from the prior work, along with novel field tuning methods, which allow the field strength to be adjusted within a reasonably large range to achieve the desired range of the phase delay control. The PM design without electric currents and power electronics associated with EMs improves reliability by reducing the number of possible points of failure and lowers the operation cost. The compactness makes it possible to use PM phase shifters in the existing XFELs with small gaps between adjacent undulators, as well as in the new XFELs without significantly increasing the FEL length. In Phase I we have accomplished the followings; 1) determined the optimum physics parameters for both weak and strong phase shifters; 2) conducted magnetic design with concrete magnetic and geometrical parameters of actual produced PM materials; 3) provided solutions to achieve precision fine tuning of the magnetic fields with unique methods; 4) elaborated a design based upon ease of manufacturing and cost analysis; and 5) produced rare-earth PM materials, which will be used for prototyping in Phase II. The phase I results provide a foundation for the research and development in the Phase II project, which will aim at building two full-size PM phase shifters and testing at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. This project will significantly provide the potential to bring a paradigm change in accelerator technology, replacing conventional electromagnets for many existing accelerator applications and allowing the development of new applications in completely new areas. For example, the PM FEL phase shifters can help significantly improve coherence and power of an XFEL. The proposed use of PM phase shifters will also bring significant cost savings to the construction, operation and maintenance of FEL facilities.

International Applications for Floating Solar PV (FPV) [Slides]

Floating solar is a comparatively new concept. Floating solar is about to form a third pillar in the market for solar energy next to ground mounted and rooftop solar. The Asia-Pacific region already dominates the fast-emerging market in floating solar PV (FPV), and it looks set to build on that position as more nations get on board and costs fall. Asia-Pacific is set to increase its market share from 74% in 2020 to 87% in 2026 in terms of global installed FPV capacity. However, since floating solar systems are still a new application, there is a lack of information on its performance, cost, technical complexity, and operations and maintenance (O&M). This seminar series seeks to partially remedy that through presenting case studies that highlight the benefits, challenges, and applications of FPV in South and Southeast Asia.

Advancing $otsdaq$ for Optimized Data Acquisition

High-energy physics (HEP) experiments demand data acquisition (DAQ) systems capable of orchestrating complex detector operations, high data throughput, and responsive, real-time feedback. Traditional systems often have steep learning curves, making onboarding difficult for new users. The Off-The-Shelf Data Acquisition $otsdaq$ framework was developed to address these issues by providing a modular and flexible interface that is easier to operate while remaining customizable enough for experimental setups. As the upcoming Mu2e experiment prepares for deployment, improving stability, usability, and performance has become increasingly critical. Our work enhances $otsdaq$ with features that streamline visualization, correct data metrics, improve debugging workflows, and stabilize the user interface.

Experimental Study of the Invariance of Pressure Gain with Respect to the Dynamics of Multiple Competing Waves in a Rotating Detonation Combustor

Changes in the overall performance of a rotating detonation combustor with respect to changes in operation mode and wave dynamics arising by operation with fixed inlet/exit geometry but at different combustor, lengths are investigated experimentally. The air inlet, fuel injection, and exit constriction geometry are held constant while only the length of the detonation channel is varied from 71 to 137 mm (which corresponds to about 10 to 20 channel widths). Operation of H2/air over a range of air mass flow rates and equivalence ratios are considered for every chamber length. The number and speed of (primary) detonation and secondary waves are characterized through high-speed pressure measurements in the detonation channel and aft chemiluminescence videos. The number of waves is found to increase with length while detonation wave speed decreases significantly. Particular emphasis is given to characterize a phenomenon that is observed at operation with longer combustor lengths and higher mass flow rates. The phenomenon manifests as a super-cycle behavior with a period equal to many detonation wave rotational periods and is characterized by a periodic and structured ascending/descending sequence of the number, speed, and direction of both (primary) detonation and secondary waves. This phenomenon is likely a manifestation of the system failing in achieving operation with a higher number of detonation waves as length and/or mass flow rate are increased. The performance of the device is quantified in terms of measured thrust and pressure gain (through the use of the equivalent available pressure). Both metrics are essentially found to be invariant with respect to combustor length and most importantly, mode of operation. Surprisingly, even operation with complex wave dynamics arising from transitions between multiple competing wave systems does not appear to alter the overall global performance of the device but rather, it remains defined by the total (capture) air mass flow rate, equivalence ratio, and inlet/outlet areas.

Prognostics and Health Management in Nuclear Power Plants: An Updated Method-Centric Review With Special Focus on Data-Driven Methods

In a carbon-constrained world, future uses of nuclear power technologies can contribute to climate change mitigation as the installed electricity generating capacity and range of applications could be much greater and more diverse than with the current plants. To preserve the nuclear industry competitiveness in the global energy market, prognostics and health management (PHM) of plant assets is expected to be important for supporting and sustaining improvements in the economics associated with operating nuclear power plants (NPPs) while maintaining their high availability. Of interest are long-term operation of the legacy fleet to 80 years through subsequent license renewals and economic operation of new builds of either light water reactors or advanced reactor designs. Recent advances in data-driven analysis methods—largely represented by those in artificial intelligence and machine learning—have enhanced applications ranging from robust anomaly detection to automated control and autonomous operation of complex systems. The NPP equipment PHM is one area where the application of these algorithmic advances can significantly improve the ability to perform asset management. This paper provides an updated method-centric review of the full PHM suite in NPPs focusing on data-driven methods and advances since the last major survey article was published in 2015. The main approaches and the state of practice are described, including those for the tasks of data acquisition, condition monitoring, diagnostics, prognostics, and planning and decision-making. Research advances in non-nuclear power applications are also included to assess findings that may be applicable to the nuclear industry, along with the opportunities and challenges when adapting these developments to NPPs. Finally, this paper identifies key research needs in regard to data availability and quality, verification and validation, and uncertainty quantification.

Pollution reduction technology program for small jet aircraft engines, phase 1

A series of combustor pressure rig screening tests was conducted on three combustor concepts applied to the TFE731-2 turbofan engine combustion system for the purpose of evaluating their relative emissions reduction potential consistent with prescribed performance, durability, and envelope contraints. The three concepts and their modifications represented increasing potential for reducing emission levels with the penalty of increased hardware complexity and operational risk. Concept 1 entailed advanced modifications to the present production TFE731-2 combustion system. Concept 2 was based on the incorporation of an axial air-assisted airblast fuel injection system. Concept 3 was a staged premix/prevaporizing combustion system. Significant emissions reductions were achieved in all three concepts, consistent with acceptable combustion system performance. Concepts 2 and 3 were identified as having the greatest achievable emissions reduction potential, and were selected to undergo refinement to prepare for ultimate incorporation within an engine.
