Solvents and slurries comprising a poly(carboxylic acid) binder for silicon electrode manufacture

An silicon-containing electrode is formed by coating a silicon-containing slurry onto a conductive current collector. The slurry comprises a binder solution comprising a poly(carboxylic acid) binder dissolved in a mixed solvent system comprising an amide solvent of Formula I, as described herein, and a second solvent which can be water and/or an organic solvent. The binder preferably comprises poly(acrylic acid). The mixed solvent system comprises about 10 to about 99 vol % of the amide solvent of Formula I. The binder solution is utilized as a solvent for a slurry of silicon-containing particles for preparing the silicon-containing electrode. The slurries comprising the mixed solvent system have higher viscosity and are more stable than slurries containing the same concentrations of silicon particles, carbon particles, and binder in water as the sole solvent.

Mixed Ionic–Electronic Conductor of Perovskite Li x La y MO 3-δ toward Carbon-Free Cathode for Reversible Lithium–Air Batteries

Mixed ionic–electronic conductors (MIECs) can play a pivotal role in achieving high energies and power densities in rechargeable batteries owing to their ability to simultaneously conduct ions and electrons. In our study, a new strategy is proposed wherein late 3d transition metals (TMs) are substituted into a perovskite Li-ion conductor to transform it into a Li-containing MIEC. First-principles calculations show that perovskite Li x La y MO 3 with late 3d TMs have a low oxygen vacancy formation energy, implying high electron carrier concentrations corresponding to high electronic conductivity. The activation barriers for Li diffusion in Li x La y MO 3 (M = Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co) are below 0.411 eV, resulting in high Li-ion conductivity. The designed perovskites of Li0.34La 0.55 MnO 3-δ experimentally prove to have high electronic (2.04 × 10 -3 S cm -1 ) and Li-ion (8.53 × 10 -5 S cm -1 ) conductivities, and when applied in a carbon-free cathode of a Li–air cell, they deliver superior reversibility at 0.21 mAh cm -2 over 100 charge/discharge cycles while avoiding the degradation associated with carbonaceous materials. Finally, this strategy enables the effective design of Li-conducting MIEC and reversible Li–air batteries.

The pNab experiment and the quest for ever better neutron beam polarization

The Nab and pNAB collaborations are conducting a program of studies of free neutron beta decay, with the primary goal of testing the unitarity of the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix that describes quark mixing due to the weak interaction. For this purpose, a large, novel electromagnetic spectrometer, the Nab spectrometer, has been designed, built, and placed in use to determine the correlation coefficients in unpolarized neutron beta decay: "a", the neutrino-electron correlation coefficient; and "b", the Fierz term. The subject of this paper is pNAB, the second phase of the program, that will deploy the same spectrometer with a polarized neutron beam to determine "A", the beta asymmetry; and "B", the neutrino asymmetry coefficients. A focus of this paper will be on the strategies to provide a high and precisely known neutron beam polarization.

DME-Propane Ignition Delay Time Measurements at Mixing Controlled Compression Ignition Engine-Relevant Conditions

The blend of dimethyl ether (DME, CH 3 OCH 3 ) and propane (C 3 H 8 ) is a potentially renewable fuel mixture that has the potential to replace diesel in compression ignition engines. The combination can potentially reduce particulate and greenhouse gas emissions compared to a conventional diesel engine operating under similar conditions. However, detailed conceptual and simulation studies must be conducted before adopting a new fuel on a compression ignition engine. For these simulations, accurate chemical kinetic models are necessary. However, the validity of chemical kinetic mechanisms in the literature is unknown for mixing controlled compression ignition (MCCI) engine operating conditions. Hence, in this work, we studied the ignition of dimethyl ether (DME) and propane blends in a shock tube at MCCI engine conditions. Ignition delay time (IDT) data was collected behind the reflected shock for DME-propane mixtures for heavy-duty compression ignition (CI) engine parameters. Undiluted experiments spanning temperatures of 700 to 1100 K and pressures of 55 to 84 bar for various blends (100% CH 3 OCH 3 / 0% C 3 H 8, 100% C 3 H 8 / 0% CH 3 OCH 3 , 60% CH 3 OCH 3 / 40% C 3 H 8 ) of DME and propane were combusted in synthetic air (21% O 2 / 79% N 2 ). Some experiments were conducted at higher pressures (90-120 bar) to understand model performance at these conditions. Comparisons of IDT were made with the predictions of recent chemical kinetic mechanisms for DME-propane mixture, including the Aramco3.0, NUIG, and Dames et al. mechanisms. All mechanisms overpredicted IDT compared to experimental values. Sensitivity analysis was conducted with Dames et al. model, and critical reactions sensitive to IDT of DME-propane mixture near 100 bar are outlined.

Synthetic Ancillary Service Generator (SynAS) v1

The balance of demand and supply in the electric power grid is a crucial element to grid reliability. While balancing is typically provided by conventional power plants, with spinning generators, distributed energy resources (DER) and especially electric vehicles (EVs) pose a great potential to provide such service. This project conducted a field demonstration at the Los Angeles Air Force Base (LA-AFB) where a fleet of mixed-use bi-directional EVs were actively participating in the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) market for frequency regulation. While participation in regulation markets is promising, a major drawback in designing control systems and assessing potential revenue is the lack of example frequency regulation signals. This project introduces an open-source dataset for 143 days of four-second regulation data, and the SynAS Python module to synthetically generate frequency regulation signals of arbitrary length.

TEX-Chlorine Assemblies: Highly Enriched Uranium Plates with Sodium Chloride Absorbers Using Polyethylene Moderator and Polyethylene Reflector

This evaluation documents highly enriched uranium (HEU) experimental critical configurations with polyethylene moderators and sodium chloride absorbers conducted as part of the United States Nuclear Criticality Safety Program’s Thermal/Epithermal eXperiments (TEX) program. HEU-MET-MIXED-021 provides the benchmark evaluation of five TEX experiments designed to establish baseline configurations with HEU Jemima plates moderated by high density polyethylene (HDPE). The TEX-HEU experiments were designed to cover five different fission energy regimes by varying the thickness of the interstitial HDPE moderator, with varying fractions of thermal, intermediate, and fast fissions, and to be easily modified to accommodate test materials of interest. HEU-MET-INTER-013 documents the first TEX-HEU variation, incorporating hafnium in seven different experimental configurations. This evaluation covers an additional variant that incorporates absorber plates of compacted high-purity sodium chloride salt. These experiments were motivated by a criticality safety need for validation data for uranium purification by means of electrorefining with chloride salts, especially thermal and intermediate energy configurations resulting from moderator upset conditions, and their design was optimized by matching sensitivity profiles from application cases. All three experimental configurations are judged to be acceptable as benchmark cases. The main parameter varied between the configurations is the thickness of the polyethylene moderators and the sodium chloride absorbers between the HEU plates. Varying the thickness of the polyethylene tunes the neutron energy spectrum between majority thermal (Case 1 and 2) and intermediate (Case 3). The fission fractions, presented in Table 1, are determined calculationally. Case 3 is cross listed as HEU-MET-INTER-014.

Synthesis, Structure, and Electric Conductivity of Higher Hydrides of Ytterbium at High Pressure

While most of the rare-earth metals readily form trihydrides, due to increased stability of the filled 4f electronic shell for Yb(II), only YbH 2.67 , formally corresponding to Yb II (Yb III H 4 ) 2 (or Yb 3 H 8 ), remains the highest hydride of ytterbium. Utilizing the diamond anvil cell methodology and synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction, we have attempted to push this limit further via hydrogenation of metallic Yb and Yb 3 H 8 . Compression of the latter has also been investigated in a neutral pressure-transmitting medium (PTM). While the in situ heating of Yb facilitates the formation of YbH 2+x hydrides, we have not observed clear qualitative differences between the systems compressed in H 2 and He or Ne PTM. In all of these cases, a sequence of phase transitions occurred within ca. 13–18 GPa (P$\bar{31}$m–I4/m phase) and around 27 GPa (to the I4/mmm phase). The molecular volume of the systems compressed in H 2 PTM is ca. 1.5% larger than of those compressed in inert gases, suggesting a small hydrogen uptake. Nevertheless, hydrogenation toward YbH 3 is incomplete, and polyhydrides do not form up to the highest pressure studied here (ca. 75 GPa). As pointed out by electronic transport measurements, the mixed-valence Yb 3 H 8 retains its semiconducting character up to >50 GPa, although the very low remnant activation energy of conduction (<5 meV) suggests that metallization under further compression should be achievable. Finally, we provide a theoretical description of a hypothetical stoichiometric YbH 3 .

Thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties of LSCo/mullite composite contact materials for solid oxide fuel cells

Lanthanum strontium cobaltite (LSCo) is considered as a good candidate cathode contact material for solid oxide fuel cells, due to high electrical conductivity. However, LSCo has a very large coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) than the cells and metallic interconnects. As a result, poor mechanical stability is expected during thermal cycling. To minimize the CTE mismatch, we investigate a composite approach involving mixing LSCo with an inert material of low CTE, such as mullite at volume fractions from 0.1 to 0.4. Composite’s CTE shows a decreasing trend with increasing mullite volume fractions, and is consistent with model predictions. X-ray powder diffraction analysis of sintered LSCo/mullite composites exhibits no presence of other phases for samples aged for 500h at 800oC, indicating chemical compatibility. Electrical conductivity by a 4-pt method shows a decreasing trend with increasing mullite content. Contact strength of as-sintered and thermally cycled samples show that only the composite with 0.4 volume fraction has a measurable strength; the other composites have no strength. Overall, the composite approach is demonstrated in the LSCo/mullite system to lower the CTE and hence achieve thermal cycle stability. The addition of the inert phase to the LSCo matrix; however, also reduces the electrical conductivity.

Additive-Induced Morphology Change of Polymer Film Enables Enhanced Charge Mobility and Faster Organic Electrochemical Transistor Switching

Conjugated polymers (CPs) play an important role in organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) for bioelectronics and related applications, where they serve as channel materials. Currently, most successful polymers for CPs are re-engineered from traditional CPs by replacing hydrophobic alkyl side chains with hydrophilic ethylene glycol or ionic groups. Frustratingly, the enhanced ion transport often compromises the charge mobility of the original CP. In this work, we present an additive-mediated method to construct a modified poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) film to enable efficient ion migration. The additive is designed with a cleavable diazo group that releases nitrogen and 2-methoxyethanol, a volatile compound, to alter the P3HT film morphology. OECTs based on the film exhibit improved response times. Interestingly, the process also enhances the crystallinity of P3HT, leading to higher hole mobility compared with pristine P3HT. This study proposes an in situ strategy to achieve the functionality of the OMIEC via morphological regulation, offering a promising route to simultaneously enhance both ion accessibility and charge mobility.

Kilometer-Scale Hydrologic Exchange Flows in a Gravel Bed River Corridor and Their Implications to Solute Migration

In this work, a well-characterized field site along a major river corridor was used to investigate the dynamic pathways and impacts of subsurface hydrogeologic structures on kilometer-scale hydrologic exchange flows between river water and groundwater. A aqueous uranium (U aq ) plume exists at the site that discharges to the Columbia River. We performed temporally intensive monitoring of specific conductance (SpC) and U aq concentrations within the plume at increasing distances from the river shoreline and at locations both within and outside a presumed subsurface pathway of lateral hydrologic exchange. Specific conductance and U aq were utilized as in-situ tracers of hydrologic exchange and associated groundwater-surface water mixing. Monitoring data was collected for an approximate two year period during which seasonal river elevations varied by more than 2 m causing distinct events of river water intrusion and retreat from the near-shore aquifer, and large temporal variations in well-water analyte concentrations. Statistical clustering analysis was applied to identify well groupings exhibiting common time series behaviors. PFLOTRAN was implemented within a modeling domain of 3.3 x 1.9 km with dynamic flow boundary conditions and accurate subsurface topography for the basal aquitard underlying the aquifer. In-silico calculations of river water tracer behavior were performed to assess predominant flow directions and velocities influenced by river stage variations and variable aquitard topography, and their collective influences on SpC and U aq concentrations. We demonstrate complicated multidirectional flow behaviors at the kilometer scale resulting from hydrologic exchange and subsurface structure that influence plume dynamics and determine the overall system behavior.

Effects of Salt Aggregation in Perfluoroether Electrolytes

Electrolytes comprised of polymers mixed with salts have great potential for enabling the use of Li metal anodes in batteries for increased safety. Ionic conductivity is one of the key performance metrics of these polymer electrolytes and achieving high room-temperature conductivity remains a challenge to date. For a bottom-up design of the polymer electrolytes, we must first understand how the structure of polyelectrolytes on a molecular level determines their properties. Here, we use classical molecular dynamics to study the solvation structure and ion diffusion in electrolytes composed of a short-chain perfluoroether with LiFSI or LiTFSI salts. Density functional theory is also used to provide some insights into the structures and energies of the salt interactions with the perfluoroether. We observe the formation of aggregates of salts in the fluorinated systems even at low salt concentrations. The fluorine-fluorine attraction in the solvent is the governing factor for creating the salt aggregates. The aggregates’ size and lifetime change with concentration and anion. These simulations provide an insight into the structure and dynamics of perfluoroether based electrolytes that can be used to improve Li-ion batteries.

Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering at Hall A, Jefferson Lab

The Standard Model of particle physics de?nes quarks and leptons as the basic building blocks of all matter. The interaction between them are mediated by force carrying gauge bosons. Quantum Chromo Dynamics (QCD), the theory that explains the strong interaction is still not complete enough to derive the physical observables of a Quark-Gluon system from the fundamental degrees of freedom of its constituents. Experimentally observable single particle densities provide important insights into our understanding of the quark-gluon system and hence help fill in the gaps of QCD. Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) provide simultaneous information of both spacial and longitudinal momentum distributions of constituents of a quark-gluon system. Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) is understood to be the simplest and cleanest process to access GPDs. Even though the exclusive DVCS is simple to understand, the experimental process however, is complex with the Bethe-Heitler and e + p ? e + ? + N? being in the mix of the electron proton scattering e+p ? e+?+X. Over the years, 3 generations of DVCS experiments have been conducted in the Experimental Hall-A of Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). This thesis presents the extraction of DVCS cross section in 9 total kinematic points from the 3rd generation experiment (DVCS3) conducted after the 12 GeV upgrade of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) of JLab during Fall 2014 - Fall 2016.

Effects of Testosterone on Mixed-Muscle Protein Synthesis and Proteome Dynamics During Energy Deficit

Effects of testosterone on integrated muscle protein metabolism and muscle mass during energy deficit are undetermined. The objective was to determine the effects of testosterone on mixed-muscle protein synthesis (MPS), proteome-wide fractional synthesis rates (FSR), and skeletal muscle mass during energy deficit. This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. The study was conducted at Pennington Biomedical Research Center. Fifty healthy men. The study consisted of 14 days of weight maintenance, followed by a 28-day 55% energy deficit with 200 mg testosterone enanthate (TEST, n = 24) or placebo (PLA, n = 26) weekly, and up to 42 days of ad libitum recovery feeding. Mixed-MPS and proteome-wide FSR before (Pre), during (Mid), and after (Post) the energy deficit were determined using heavy water (days 1-42) and muscle biopsies. Muscle mass was determined using the D3-creatine dilution method. Mixed-MPS was lower than Pre at Mid and Post (P < 0.0005), with no difference between TEST and PLA. The proportion of individual proteins with numerically higher FSR in TEST than PLA was significant by 2-tailed binomial test at Post (52/67; P < 0.05), but not Mid (32/67; P > 0.05). Muscle mass was unchanged during energy deficit but was greater in TEST than PLA during recovery (P < 0.05). The high proportion of individual proteins with greater FSR in TEST than PLA at Post suggests exogenous testosterone exerted a delayed but broad stimulatory effect on synthesis rates across the muscle proteome during energy deficit, resulting in muscle mass accretion during subsequent recovery.

X-Ray Phase Contrast Imaging for Dynamic Material Mix Experiments, LAO-003-17, Year 3 of 3

X-ray phase contrast imaging with transmission gratings for density profile measurements has been developed and tested for dynamic experimental applications. Talbot-Lau x-ray deflectometry is a new method of measuring x-ray refraction in addition to attenuation and ultrasmall-angle scattering that has recently been developed for static imaging, primarily for medical and industrial applications. To obtain density profiles from fast-evolving systems, we must use a flash x-ray source with a spot size much larger than the continuous microfocus sources of static imaging systems, and we can obtain only a single exposure. The challenges to measuring electron density profiles of two mixed elements from a single-image, low spatial resolution system are addressed, and initial results from the first dynamic experiments with one such system, conducted on a gas launcher at the end of FY 2018 and beginning of FY 2019, are presented. In FY 2019, we designed and built a new deflectometer designed for detonator experiments to test new techniques to improve the sensitivity and reliability of the diagnostic.

Fluorine-Substituted Lithium Chloride Solid Electrolytes for High-Voltage All-Solid-State Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium ternary halides are promising solid electrolytes, owing to their high ionic conductivity and reasonably high oxidative and chemical stability. Recently, fluorine substitution in Li 3 MCl 6 has been suggested as a promising approach for further enhancing oxidation stability. Accordingly, this study outlines a material design strategy for F-substituted Li 3 MCl 6 through systematic theoretical analyses. Calculations reveal that the mixing limit of F in Li 3 MCl 6–x F x is in the range of 0.5–1.5, and the resulting Li 3 MCl 6–x F x phases can retain ionic conductivity above 1 mS/cm up to x = 1.0. Additionally, the calculations also predict that the formation of F-containing passivating phases could increase the oxidation potential for Li3MCl5F to ~6.3 V. The proposed material design strategy is validated through the synthesis of Li 3 YCl 5 F, which is confirmed to show both high ionic conductivity and enhanced oxidation stability. The design guidelines presented herein can accelerate the potential use of halide-based electrolyte chemistries in high-voltage all-solid-state batteries.

A new ductile, tougher resin for impregnation of superconducting magnets

A major remaining challenge for Nb 3 Sn high field magnets is their training due to random temperature variations in the coils. The main objective of our research is to reduce or eliminate it by finding novel impregnation materials in replacement of the epoxies currently used. An organic olefin-based thermosetting dicyclopentadiene resin, C 10 H 12 , commercially available in Japan as TELENE® by RIMTEC, was used to impregnate a short Nb 3 Sn undulator coil developed by ANL and FNAL. This magnet reached short sample limit after only two quenches, compared with ∼100 when CTD-101K® was used. Ductility, i.e. the ability to accept large strains, and toughness were identified as key properties to achieve these results. In addition, we have been investigating whether mixing TELENE with high heat capacity ceramic powders such as Gd 2 O 3 , Gd 2 O 2 S, and HoCu 2 , increases the specific heat (C p ) of impregnated Nb3Sn superconducting magnets. The viscosity, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and other physical properties of TELENE with high-C p powder fillers were measured in this study as a function of temperature and magnetic field. The TELENE-87 wt%Gd 2 O 2 S had a peak in C p between 4.3 K and 5.3 K at fields between 0 and 8 T. We have also investigated the effect on the mechanical properties of pure and mixed TELENE under 10 MGy of gamma ray irradiation at the Takasaki Advanced Radiation Research Institute in Takasaki, Japan. TELENE-87 wt%Gd 2 O 2 S exhibited exceptional radiation resistance. Impregnating an undulator coil with TELENE mixed with Gd 2 O 2 S powder will verify whether the coils' thermal stability further improves, or whether its low diffusivity will require engineering the material with high-thermal conductivity components. Short magnet training will lead to better magnet reliability, lower magnet margins, lower risk and substantial saving in accelerators' commissioning costs. Part of this study is supported by the U.S.-Japan Science and Technology Cooperation Program in high energy physics operated by MEXT in Japan and DOE in the U.S.

Li 0.625 Al 0.125 H 0.25 Cl 0.75 O 0.25 Superionic Conductor with Disordered Rock-Salt Structure

Solid-state Li-ion conductors are of broad interest in electrochemical energy storage, especially in solid-state Li batteries that serve as a promising alternative for the next-generation safe and high-energy-density batteries. Exploring solid-state superionic conductors is significant for the development of solid-state Li batteries with high performance. Herein, we report a disordered rock-salt (A 1 B 1 )-structured solid electrolyte (Li 0.625 Al 0.125 H 0.25 )(Cl 0.75 O 0.25 ) (abbr. LAHCO) that was synthesized using Li 2 OHCl and LiAlCl 4 as precursors. Neutron diffraction reveals that Li, Al, and H atoms occupy the A sites and O and Cl atoms occupy the B sites in the A 1 B 1 structure for pure LAHCO. The LAHCO compound with excess LiAlCl 4 shows the highest Li + ionic conductivity of ~10 –4 S cm –1 at room temperature due to the disordering induced by configurational entropy as well as the entropy of mixing. Moreover, LAHCO–LiAlCl 4 solid electrolyte exhibits a stable polarization voltage under a current density of 5–50 μA cm –2 in Li symmetric cells. Furthermore, this work not only explicates the importance of Li-ion conductors with a rock-salt structure but also contributes toward the development of solid-state Li-ion conductors for broad applications.
