Development of termination and utilization concepts for flat conductor cables. Volume 1: Development of low profile flat conductor cable connecting device and permanent splice

The development of low-profile flat conductor cable (FCC) connecting device and FCC permanent splice methods are discussed. The design goal for the low-profile connecting device was to mate and unmate FCC harness to a typical spacecraft component with a maximum height of 3/8 in. The results indicate that the design, fabrication, and processing of the low-profile connecting device are feasible and practical. Some redesign will be required to achieve the goal of 3/8 in. Also, failures were experienced subsequent to salt spray and humidity exposure. Five different FCC permanent splice methods were considered. Subsequent to evaluation of these five methods, two design concepts were chosen for development tests.

Aircraft Engine Sump Fire Mitigation

An investigation was performed of the conditions in which fires can result and be controlled within the bearing sump simulating that of a gas turbine engine; Esso 4040 Turbo Oil, Mobil Jet 2, and Monsanto MCS-2931 lubricants were used. Control variables include the oil inlet temperature, bearing temperature, oil inlet and scavenge rates, hot air inlet temperature and flow rate, and internal sump baffling. In addition to attempting spontaneous combustion, an electric spark and a rub (friction) mechanism were employed to ignite fires. Spontaneous combustion was not obtained; however, fires were readily ignited with the electric spark while using each of the three test lubricants. Fires were also ignited using the rub mechanism with the only test lubricant evaluated, Esso 4040. Major parameters controlling ignitions were: Sump configuration; Bearing and oil temperatures, hot air temperature and flow and bearing speed. Rubbing between stationary parts and rotating parts (eg. labyrinth seal and mating rub strip) is a very potent fire source suggesting that observed accidental fires in gas turbine sumps may well arise from this cause.

Integrated circuit package with lead structure and method of preparing the same

A beam-lead integrated circuit package assembly including a beam-lead integrated circuit chip, a lead frame array bonded to projecting fingers of the chip, a rubber potting compound disposed around the chip, and an encapsulating molded plastic is described. The lead frame array is prepared by photographically printing a lead pattern on a base metal sheet, selectively etching to remove metal between leads, and plating with gold. Joining of the chip to the lead frame array is carried out by thermocompression bonding of mating goldplated surfaces. A small amount of silicone rubber is then applied to cover the chip and bonded joints, and the package is encapsulated with epoxy resin, applied by molding.

Banded transformer cores

A banded transformer core formed by positioning a pair of mated, similar core halves on a supporting pedestal. The core halves are encircled with a strap, selectively applying tension whereby a compressive force is applied to the core edge for reducing the innate air gap. A dc magnetic field is employed in supporting the core halves during initial phases of the banding operation, while an ac magnetic field subsequently is employed for detecting dimension changes occurring in the air gaps as tension is applied to the strap.

Cryogenic gyroscope housing

A cryogenic gyroscope housing having gas spin-up means provided in annular discs inserted between housing shells is described. A circumferential recess in the inner edges of the discs at their juncture serves as the gas spin-up channel, and recesses in the discs at their junctures with the shells form suction channels. The discs also have inlet and outlet ports communicating with the spin-up channel and exhaust slots communicating with the suction channels. Mating surfaces of the discs and housing shells are held in position by optical contact at the equational plane of the housing. Suspension electrodes and thin-film readout loops are disposed in shells. A centering band and clamp rings provide for proper alinement and placement of parts in formation of optical contact joints.

Wind Tunnel Test Results of Fairings on A.004 Scale Model Rockwell Space Shuttle Integrated Vehicle Aerodynamic Characteristics at Mach Numbers from 0.6 to 4.96 (IA62F)

Experimental aerodynamic investigations were conducted on a .004 scale model (34-OTS) orbiter, external tank, and solid rocket booster combined as an integrated vehicle in the NASA/MSFC 14 x 14 inch trisonic wind tunnel. The primary test objective was to determine the effect of a full length orbiter/external tank fairing on axial force. Secondary objectives were to define the static stability characteristics of the mated vehicle configuration with fairings over a Mach number range of 0.6 thru 4.96. Six component aerodynamic force and moment data were recorded over an angle of attack range from -10 deg to 10 deg at 0 deg sideslip angle and from -10 deg to 10 deg sideslip range at 0 deg and 5 deg angle of attack. Plotted and tabular results are presented herein.

Development of a gas pressure bonded four-pole alternator rotor

Methods were developed for fabrication of a solid four pole alternator rotor by hot isostatic pressure welding. The rotor blanks welded in this program had complex geometrical mating interfaces and were of considerable bulk, being approximately 3-1/2 inches (0.089 meters) in diameter and 14 inches (0.356 meters) long. Magnetic end pieces were machined from AlSl 4340 steel, while the non-magnetic central section was of Inconel 718. Excellent welds were produced which were shown to be responsive to post weld heat treatments which substantially improved joint strength. Prior to welding the rotors, test specimens of complex geometry were welded to demonstrate that complex surfaces with intentional mechanical misfit could be readily joined using HIP welding. This preliminary work demonstrated not only that interface compliance is achieved during welding but that welding pressure is developed in these thick sections sufficient to produce sound joints. Integral weld-heat treatment cycles were developed that permitted the attainment of magnetic properties while minimizing residual stress associated with the allotropic transformation of 4340 steel.

Adhesion and friction behavior of group 4 elements germanium, silicon, tin, and lead

Adhesion and friction studies were conducted with thin films of the group IV elements silicon, germanium, tin, and lead ion plated on the nickel (011) substrate. The mating surface was gold (111). Contacts were made for the elements in the clean state and with oxygen present. Adhesion and friction experiments were conducted at very light loads of 1 to 10 g. Sliding was at a speed of 0.7 mm/min. Friction results indicate that the more covalently bonded elements silicon and germanium exhibit lower adhesion and friction than the more metallic bonded tin and lead. The adhesion of gold to germanium was observed, and recrystallization of the transferred gold occurred. Plastic flow of germanium was seen with sliding. Oxygen reduced, but did not eliminate, the adhesion observed with germanium and silicon.

Results of investigations of an 0.010-scale 140A/B configuration (model 72-OTS) of the Rockwell International space shuttle orbiter in the NASA/Langley Research Center unitary plan wind tunnel

Experimental aerodynamic investigations were conducted in the NASA/Langley unitary plan wind tunnel on a sting mounted 0.010-scale outer mold line model of the 140A/B configuration of the Rockwell International Space Shuttle Vehicle. The primary test objectives were to obtain: (1) six component force and moment data for the mated vehicle at subsonic and transonic conditions, (2) effects of configuration build-up, (3) effects of protuberances, ET/orbiter fairings and attach structures, and (4) elevon deflection effects on wing bending moment. Six component aerodynamic force and moment data and base and balance cavity pressures were recorded over Mach numbers of 1.6, 2.0, 2.5, 2.86, 3.9, and 4.63 at a nominal Reynolds number of 20 to the 6th power per foot. Selected configurations were tested at angles of attack and sideslip from -10 deg to +10 deg. For all configurations involving the orbiter, wing bending, and torsion coefficients were measured on the right wing.

Effect of inlet ingestion of a wing tip vortex on compressor face flow and turbojet stall margin

A two-dimensional inlet was alternately mated to a coldpipe plug assembly and a J85-GE-13 turbojet engine, and placed in a Mach 0.4 stream so as to ingest the tip vortex of a forward mounted wing. Vortex properties were measured just forward of the inlet and at the compressor face. Results show that ingestion of a wing tip vortex by a turbojet engine can cause a large reduction in engine stall margin. The loss in stall compressor pressure ratio was primarily dependent on vortex location and rotational direction and not on total-pressure distortion.
