Optimal placement of excitations and sensors for verification of large dynamical systems

The computationally difficult problem of the optimal placement of excitations and sensors to maximize the observed measurements is studied within the framework of combinatorial optimization, and is solved numerically using a variation of the simulated annealing heuristic algorithm. Results of numerical experiments including a square plate and a 960 degrees-of-freedom Control of Flexible Structure (COFS) truss structure, are presented. Though the algorithm produces suboptimal solutions, its generality and simplicity allow the treatment of complex dynamical systems which would otherwise be difficult to handle.

Reanalysis procedure for large structural systems

Global-basis-vector approximate reanalysis techniques for use in automated structural optimization schemes are developed and demonstrated. The vibrational response of a modified structure (MS) is estimated by lumping the design variables into a single tracing parameter, applying an operator splitting procedure to express the FEM equations of the MS in terms of the original-structure equations plus correction terms, and reducing the MS equations via a classical Bubnov-Galerkin scheme. The sensitivity of the vibrational response to structural modifications is evaluated, and the relationship between this method and the preconditioned conjugate-gradient method (Noor and Peters, 1988) is explored. Numerical results for linear static and free vibration problems involving beamlike lattices, double-layered hexahedral grids, and structural gridworks are presented in tables and graphs and briefly characterized.

Reliability analysis of large, complex systems using ASSIST

The SURE reliability analysis program is discussed as well as the ASSIST model generation program. It is found that semi-Markov modeling using model reduction strategies with the ASSIST program can be used to accurately solve problems at least as complex as other reliability analysis tools can solve. Moreover, semi-Markov analysis provides the flexibility needed for modeling realistic fault-tolerant systems.

The ISIS project: Fault-tolerance in large distributed systems

The semi-annual status report covers activities of the ISIS project during the second half of 1989. The project had several independent objectives: (1) At the level of the ISIS Toolkit, ISIS release V2.0 was completed, containing bypass communication protocols. Performance of the system is greatly enhanced by this change, but the initial software release is limited in some respects. (2) The Meta project focused on the definition of the Lomita programming language for specifying rules that monitor sensors for conditions of interest and triggering appropriate reactions. This design was completed, and implementation of Lomita is underway on the Meta 2.0 platform. (3) The Deceit file system effort completed a prototype. It is planned to make Deceit available for use in two hospital information systems. (4) A long-haul communication subsystem project was completed and can be used as part of ISIS. This effort resulted in tools for linking ISIS systems on different LANs together over long-haul communications lines. (5) Magic Lantern, a graphical tool for building application monitoring and control interfaces, is included as part of the general ISIS releases.

Large space systems in global change mitigation

The monitoring from space of such processes as the greenhouse effect and depletion of the ozone layer is discussed, as well as possibilities for active intervention in them, using space systems. Possibilities include the use of the Solar Power Satellite to reduce dependence on the burning of fossil fuels, dispersal of materials to neutralize chemicals responsible for ozone depletion, and measures to reduce the impact of local disasters, both natural and man-made.

The output of this task will be a program plan which will delineate how MSFC will support and implement its portion of the Inter-Center Computational Controls Program Plan. Another output will be the results of looking at various multibody/multidegree of freedom computer programs in various environments.

Structural optimization of large structural systems by optimality criteria methods

The fundamental concepts of the optimality criteria method of structural optimization are presented. The effect of the separability properties of the objective and constraint functions on the optimality criteria expressions is emphasized. The single constraint case is treated first, followed by the multiple constraint case with a more complex evaluation of the Lagrange multipliers. Examples illustrate the efficiency of the method.

Static second-order polarizability calculations for large molecular systems

A procedure to calculate all second-order polarizability tensor elements in static fields has been developed. The calculations are based on semiempirical Hamiltonians (MNDO) that include shaped electric fields. The technique has been applied to mono-, di-, and trisubstituted benzenes incorporating nitro, methyl, and primary and secondary amino groups.

Adaptive structures for precision controlled large space systems

The development of adaptive structural systems is reviewed and the potential of these systems in meeting some of the requirements for NASA future space missions is demonstrated. Particular attention is given to the characteristics of a viscous damper in the micron displacement regime; the optimal placement of active and passive members into a truss structure; a system identification test using the active members as excitation sources; a concept for deforming a lightweight composite honeycomb optical panel to correct for on-orbit distortions by using piezoelectric actuators attached to the back facesheet; and the results of an active member vibration control experiment in a reduced gravity environment.

Adaptive structures for precision controlled large space systems

The stringent accuracy and ground test validation requirements of some of the future space missions will require new approaches in structural design. Adaptive structures, structural systems that can vary their geometric congiguration as well as their physical properties, are primary candidates for meeting the functional requirements for such missions. Research performed in the development of such adaptive structural systems is described.
