Fabrication and evaluation of large-area ultrasoft X-ray detectors suitable for spacecraft application

The modifications to the Houston/MSC design of the gas proportional counter flight electronics system are discussed. The following modifications are described: charge amplifier bandwidth improvements, power converter redesign, serial data output buffer, second differentiator, and risetime discriminator. In addition, the redesign of the stellar aspect camera is discussed along with developments in thin film fabrication.

A large area detector for neutrons between 2 and 100 MeV

A neutron detector sensitive from 2 to 100 MeV is described. The detector is designed for high altitude balloon flight to measure the flux, energy and direction of albedo neutrons from the earth and to search for solar neutrons. A neutron scatter from a proton is required in each of two liquid scintillator tanks spaced 1 meter apart. The energy of the recoil proton in the first tank is obtained from pulse height analysis of the scintillator output. The energy of the recoil neutron is obtained from its time of flight between the tanks. The detector has been calibrated with 15.3 MeV neutrons and mu mesons. The minimum detectable flux is 10(-4) neutron/sq cm/sec at a counting rate of one per minute; the energy resolution is 12% at 15 MeV and 30% at 100 MeV. The angle between the incoming neutron and the recoil neutron is measured to + or - 10 deg.

An automated system for the alignment of large area modular solar simulators

A real-time optical alignment and diagnostic system is being assembled for installation at the Space Environment Simulation Laboratory. This system will be used to measure and analyze the performance of optical components, assemblies, and full modules. This information, in turn, is used to align assemblies and modules. The system capability includes such functions as the generation and updating of a catalog, which serves as permanent record, in addition to providing the capability to predict in-chamber performance of optics combinations before they are mounted in the chamber.

A large area Thomson-scattering stellar X-ray polarimeter.

An instrument for measuring the polarization of stellar X-ray emission has been designed, constructed, and tested. The polarization dependence of incoherent Thomson scattering in lithium metal is utilized. Means for suppression of cosmic ray background effects have been provided. The apparatus has been flown in rockets to obtain data in the polarization of X-ray sources in Sco X-1 and Tau X-1.

Large area silicon solar array development.

Solar array technology has made significant improvements during the past five years in terms of the design and application of multikilowatt systems and in improvements of the specific power output capabilities of the arrays. The progress in array performance has been primarily due to array design. Experience in building, testing, and flying flexible arrays is giving confidence that they can be safely integrated into many spacecraft designs without deleterious coupling with the spacecraft control system.

Large-area CCD imagers for spacecraft applications

Backside illuminated CCD imagers with 100 x 160 resolution elements have been fabricated using double level metal technology. Detailed study of the optical performance of such arrays has been performed between 24 C and -40 C using data rates from 10 kHz to 1 MHz. A 400 x 400 array is presently being fabricated.

MTF and point-spread function for a large-area CCD imager

The MTF degradation due to lateral diffusion is calculated for a back illuminated CCD imager for typical device parameters. The discrete nature of the CCD and finite size of the photosensitive elements result in an additional MTF degradation. The Fourier transform approach is utilized to calculate the effective point spread function for these processes in the time domain. Experimental data are presented on the point spread function for a three phase, double level anodized aluminum 160 x 100 thinned and back illuminated CCD imager and compared with the theoretical results. A simple modification of the Crowell and Labuda model suggested by these results is presented.

Implementation of an advanced table look-up classifier for large area land-use classification

Software employing Eppler's improved table look-up approach to pattern recognition has been developed, and results from this software are presented. The look-up table for each class is a computer representation of a hyperellipsoid in four dimensional space. During implementation of the software Eppler's look-up procedure was modified to include multiple ranges in order to accommodate hollow regions in the ellipsoids. In a typical ERTS classification run less than 6000 36-bit computer words were required to store tables for 24 classes. Classification results from the improved table look-up are identical with those produced by the conventional method, i.e., by calculation of the maximum likelihood decision rule at the moment of classification. With the new look-up approach an entire ERTS MSS frame can be classified into 24 classes in 1.3 hours, compared to 22.5 hours required by the conventional method. The new software is coded completely in FORTRAN to facilitate transfer to other digital computers.

Large area extreme ultraviolet focusing collector

A grazing incidence one-dimensional focusing collector for use in the extreme ultraviolet is described. The collector has a field of view of 1 x 50 deg, a focal length of 3015 cm, and a total unobstructed area of 224 sq cm. The instrument employs an interchangeable detector package of either channel-electron multipliers or proportional counters which yield a limiting sensitivity of 1.0 photons/sq cm sec A at 170 A and 0.05 photons/sq cm sec A at 90 A, respectively, for one second integrations. The design and calibration of the instrument are described in detail. Data obtained by this instrument during recent rocket flights are presented.

Calibration of large area scintillation counters on cosmic rays

Construction and calibration are reported for a 6-sq m scintillation counter consisting of two pieces of clear Lucite optically joined along a common edge, sixteen squares of plastic scintillator optically coupled on top of the Lucite, and eight photomultiplier tubes for light collection. Calibration of this counter using an anticoincidence counter to exclude multiple particle events is described. Theoretical calculations for purely electromagnetic extensive air showers indicate that this counter should detect an average of 2.5 particles per event, while the calibration data yield about 1.8 particles per event. It is shown that the anticoincidence-counter calibration method must be used for counters with areas of more than a few square meters if calibration on the response from a single particle of an extensive air shower is desired.

High subsonic flow tests of a parallel pipe followed by a large area ratio diffuser

Experiments were performed on a pilot model duct system in order to explore its aerodynamic characteristics. The model was scaled from a design projected for the high speed operation mode of the Aircraft Noise Reduction Laboratory. The test results show that the model performed satisfactorily and therefore the projected design will most likely meet the specifications.

Laser-zone growth in a Ribbon-To-Ribbon (RTR) process, silicon sheet growth development for the large area silicon sheet task of the low cost silicon solar array project

The objective of this research is to fully investigate the Ribbon-To-Ribbon (R-T-R) approach to silicon ribbon growth. Initial work has concentrated on modification and characterization of an existing R-T-R apparatus. In addition, equipment for auxiliary heating of the melt is being evaluated and acquired. Modification of the remote viewing system and mechanical staging are nearly complete. Characterization of the laser and other components is in progress and several auxiliary heating techniques are being investigated.

Large area silicon sheet by EFG

Progress in a program to produce high speed, thin, wide silicon sheets for fabricating 10% efficient solar cells is reported. An EFG ribbon growth system was used to perform growth rate and ribbon thickness experiments. A new, wide ribbon growth system was developed. A theoretical study of stresses in ribbons was also conducted. The EFG ribbons were observed to exhibit a characteristic defect structure which is orientation dependent in the early stages of growth.

Slicing of silicon into sheet material: Silicon sheet growth development for the large area silicon sheet task of the low cost silicon solar array project

Multiblade slurry sawing is used to slice 10 cm diameter silicon ingots into wafers 0.024 cm thick using 0.050 cm of silicon per slice (0.026 cm kerf loss). Total slicing time is less than twenty hours, and 143 slices are produced simultaneously. Productivity (slice area per hour per blade) is shown as a function or blade load and thickness, and abrasive size. Finer abrasive slurries cause a reduction in slice productivity, and thin blades cause a reduction of wafer accuracy. Sawing induced surface damage is found to extend 18 microns into the wafer.

Development of large area CCD imagers

High performance CCD imagers with 800 x 50 resolution elements were fabricated using a coplanar, double polysilicon, electrode system. The imager was developed as a prototype to demonstrate the feasibility of an 800 x 800 array for application to deep space photography where data rates of 10K to the 2nd power and operating temperatures of -40 C are required. The performance is discussed and comparisons made to the existing 400 x 400 imager.
