Projective imaging of high-energy nuclei via coherent exclusive vector meson production in electron-nucleus collisions

One of the major goals of modern nuclear experiments is to study the distributions of gluons inside nuclei at high energy. A key measurement is the coherent exclusive vector meson (VM) production in diffractive electron-nucleus collisions, where the gluon spatial distribution inside the nucleus can be obtained through a Fourier transform of the squared nuclear momentum transfer (|t|) distribution. This research aims to overcome the two main obstacles of the |t| measurement: limited precision in measuring |t| arising from the momentum resolution of the outgoing electron and the overwhelming incoherent background. We demonstrate that by measuring the projected |t| distribution along the direction perpendicular to the electron scattering plane, the effect of the outgoing electron’s momentum resolution can be effectively mitigated, and the diffractive pattern is largely restored. Furthermore, we propose to measure the angular distribution of the VM’s decay daughters to statistically remove the incoherent background.

Ion trap with in-vacuum high numerical aperture imaging for a dual-species modular quantum computer

Photonic interconnects between quantum systems will play a central role in both scalable quantum computing and quantum networking. Entanglement of remote qubits via photons has been demonstrated in many platforms; however, improving the rate of entanglement generation will be instrumental for integrating photonic links into modular quantum computers. We present an ion trap system that has the highest reported free-space photon collection efficiency for quantum networking. We use a pair of in-vacuum aspheric lenses, each with a numerical aperture of 0.8, to couple 10(1)% of the 493 nm photons emitted from a 138Ba+ ion into single-mode fibers. We also demonstrate that proximal effects of the lenses on the ion position and motion can be mitigated.

Generalized Optimization of High-Capacity Compressive Imaging Systems

One of the greatest challenges in applying compressive sensing (CS) signal processing techniques to electromagnetic imaging applications is designing a sensing matrix that has good reconstruction capabilities. Compressive reflector antennas (CRAs) are a class of antennas that have been shown to provide enhanced image reconstruction performance over traditional reflector antennas (TRAs) when CS techniques are employed. In this article, we present a unified CRA design method, which considers both the sensing capacity and efficiency of the antenna and can be used for both compressive imaging and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication applications. The unified design method is assessed for a CRA configuration in which dielectric scatterers are added to the surface of a TRA. The design results demonstrate the ability of the unified design method to enhance the CS reconstruction capabilities of the CRA.

Data Report: High-Resolution Microscopy Images of Sediments from Green Canyon Block 955, Gulf of Mexico

We took Leica microscopy images of sediment samples acquired at Holes H002 (4 samples) and H005 (1 sample) during the UT-GOM2-1 Expedition in Green Canyon Block 955, in the northern Gulf of Mexico. A total of 37 images were acquired. The images document a prevalence of spherical conchoidal minerals, cleavage planes typical of feldspar or mica, and black fragmented minerals which stand out from the surrounding matrix. Drilling mud intrusion is thought to contribute to a grey metallic matrix observed across multiple samples.

Improved head-controlled TV system produces high-quality remote image

Manipulator operator uses an improved resolution tv camera/monitor positioning system to view the remote handling and processing of reactive, flammable, explosive, or contaminated materials. The pan and tilt motions of the camera and monitor are slaved to follow the corresponding motions of the operators head.

Delineation of fault zones using imaging radar

The assessment of earthquake hazards and mineral and oil potential of a given region requires a detailed knowledge of geological structure, including the configuration of faults. Delineation of faults is traditionally based on three types of data: (1) seismicity data, which shows the location and magnitude of earthquake activity; (2) field mapping, which in remote areas is typically incomplete and of insufficient accuracy; and (3) remote sensing, including LANDSAT images and high altitude photography. Recently, high resolution radar images of tectonically active regions have been obtained by SEASAT and Shuttle Imaging Radar (SIR-A and SIR-B) systems. These radar images are sensitive to terrain slope variations and emphasize the topographic signatures of fault zones. Techniques were developed for using the radar data in conjunction with the traditional types of data to delineate major faults in well-known test sites, and to extend interpretation techniques to remote areas.

High-resolution CCD imaging and derived gravitational lens models of 2237+0305

Images of the gravitational lens 2237+0305 acquired in good seeing have resolved the system into at least five components within the central few arsec of the object: the galaxy nucleus and four point sources in a ringlike formation approximately centered on the galaxy. It is found that the four point sources are distinctly bluer than the galaxy, but that they do not have identical colors. The observed configuration is well reproduced by a simple model that assumes that the four objects are images of the quasar and that the lens is a constant mass-to-light ratio, elliptical, de Vaucouleurs bulge.

High resolution CO images of Seyfert Galaxies

The CO (J = 1-0) emission of three Seyfert galaxies, NGC 3227, NGC 7469, and NGC 5033 was imaged. The CO emission in NGC 3227 and NGC 7469 appears as compact structures centered on the active nuclei, containing substantial fractions of the single-dish flux. In NGC 3227, 10 percent of the CO flux detected by the interferometer is contained within the ionized narrow-line region. The unresolved molecular gas concentrations in the nucleus of NGC 3227 imply a CO mass of 65 million solar masses concentrated within a diameter less than 50 pc. The CO emission in NGC 5033 is not detected at this resolution, implying a CO structure size of 20 to 60 arcsec. Continuum emission at 2.7 mm is not detected in any of the three galaxies. In the center of NGC 7469, the H2 mass is comparable to the dynamical mass. Kinematic studies of the detected gas reveal a rotational motion of the gas in NGC 3227 and NGC 7469, allowing identification of the gas in NGC 7469 with a nuclear starburst. These data are consistent with the idea that interactions between galaxies cause gas to concentrate in their nuclei thereby feeding starburst and Seyfert activity.

A revised parametrization of the dispersion constants for high dispersion IUE images

An economical system of parameterizing dispersion constants spectra is derived and applied to International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) spectra by equating specific terms to geometric coordinates of an echellogram. Because of the virtual property of the IUE camera pixels, several geometrical rectifications can be performed analytically before the dispersion relations are solved for line and sample position. This permits the relations to be decoupled and reduced to two terms apiece, the simplest representation possible. A generalization of these principles allows the dispersion relations to be determined neatly in other echelle systems having certain well understood distortions. Prismatic cross dispersion, S wave distortion, and optical aberrations are some areas in which this system can be used.
