Error-Detectable Bosonic Entangling Gates with a Noisy Ancilla

Bosonic quantum error correction has proven to be a successful approach for extending the coherence of quantum memories, but to execute deep quantum circuits, high-fidelity gates between encoded qubits are needed. To that end, we present a family of error-detectable two-qubit gates for a variety of bosonic encodings. From a new geometric framework based on a “Bloch sphere” of bosonic operators, we construct ZZ L ⁡(θ) and exponential-swap(θ) gates for the binomial, four-legged cat, dual-rail, and several other bosonic codes. The gate Hamiltonian is simple to engineer, requiring only a programmable beam splitter between two bosonic qubits and an ancilla dispersively coupled to one qubit. This Hamiltonian can be realized in circuit QED hardware with ancilla transmons and microwave cavities. The proposed theoretical framework was developed for circuit QED but is generalizable to any platform that can effectively generate this Hamiltonian. Crucially, one can also detect first-order errors in the ancilla and the bosonic qubits during the gates. We show that this allows one to reach error-detected gate fidelities at the 0.01% level with today’s hardware, limited only by second-order hardware errors.

A Study on Particle Trajectory Error in Finite-Element Particle-in-Cell Algorithms

Particle-in-cell (PIC) algorithms are widely used for the simulation of kinetic plasmas. PIC algorithms account for the interaction between charged particles in a plasma and the electromagnetic field in ambient space, including self-field interactions. The objective of this article is to study the error in charged particle trajectories present in finite-element (FE)-based PIC algorithms on unstructured meshes. We study how the trajectory error behaves according to the FE mesh resolution and the matrix solver employed in the FE algorithm. The study is performed by considering a trajectory established by a parabolic electric potential and an axial magnetic force acting on the charged particle. Under a proper choice combination of electric and magnetic field parameters, the 2-D particle trajectories comprise closed orbits. Numerical errors cause small perturbations on the trajectories, with cumulative effects. As a result, the resulting orbital trajectories exhibit distortions including spurious apsidal precession. These distortions provide a clear imprint of the numerical error. Here, we also study the numerical error in a quantitative fashion by computing the distance norm between the trajectories obtained by the exact fields and numerical fields.

Ergodic Lagrangian dynamics in a superhero universe

We present a fictional scenario that, while undeniably whimsical, provides the foundation for a unique exercise in extended problem solving, physics analysis, and quantitative model development. Starting with the foundational premise of the Wild Cards shared-world superhero universe, we demonstrate how a variety of concepts appropriate to the advanced undergraduate level—ergodicity, functional analysis, Lagrangian mechanics, and the ever-important simplifying approximation—can be combined into a rich, coherent mathematical model. The goal of this case study is to develop a useful pedagogical exercise in exploring an open-ended research question that presents, at first glance, no clear path forward. Being both eclectic and lengthy, this exercise offers a unique way for students to apply their core physics and mathematics education. It is perhaps best used within a senior honors seminar or within a brief (e.g., January term) elective class.

Wind tunnel tests of a blade subjected to midchord torsional oscillation at high subsonic stall flutter conditions

A mechanical drive system for oscillating blades in a wind tunnel at frequencies up to 767 hertz and amplitudes of + or - 1.2 deg is described. High-speed motion pictures of schlieren images of the flow over a double-circular arc blade oscillating in harmonic motion about the midchord revealed extensive shock patterns at a nominal free stream Mach number of 0.7, a mean angle of attack of 4 deg, and reduced frequency of about 0.7. A phase lag resulting from the slow response of the flow to the motion of the blade increased with increasing reduced frequency. This phase lag, based on the difference between the time the blade attained its maximum angle of attack and the time required for the normal shock to reach its extreme downstream position, was nominally 100 deg at the above conditions.

Program Predicts Mixer Intermodulation Products

IMODP is computer-aided-design (CAD) software tool useful in analysis and design of frequency-conversion schemes. Analyzes intermodulation products created by mixing of harmonics of local-oscillator (LO) signal with harmonics of another radio-frequency (RF) signal. Such mixing results in signal components in intermediate-frequency (IF) range above required rejection level. Highly interactive with user. Written in Microsoft FORTRAN.

On particle motion in an electric welding arc treated with sonic or ultrasonic oscillations

The criteria for the stability of the subharmonic, harmonic, or superharmonic oscillations determine the relation between acoustic field parameters and particle parameters. The derived formulas underlie the destruction of the fragile Widmanstatten structure in weldings and therefore the designing of the generators that must be used for this welding process.
