Extreme ultraviolet quantum efficiency of opaque alkali halide photocathodes on microchannel plates

Comprehensive measurements are presented for the quantum detection efficiency (QDE) of the microchannel plate materials CsI, KBr, KCl, and MgF2, over the 44-1800 A wavelength range. QDEs in excess of 40 percent are achieved by several materials in specific wavelength regions of the EUV. Structure is noted in the wavelength dependence of the QDE that is directly related to the valence-band/conduction-band gap energy and the onset of atomic-like resonant transitions. A simple photocathode model allows interpretation of these features, together with the QDE efficiency variation, as a function of illumination angle.

Imaging extreme ultraviolet spectrometer employing a single toroidal diffraction grating - The initial evaluation

The design and test results of a high-efficiency EUV imaging spectrometer employing a concave toroidal grating which is illuminated at normal incidence in a Rowland circle mounting and has only one reflecting surface are discussed. Photographic tests and initial photoelectric tests with a two-dimensional pulse-counting detector system demonstrate the excellent image quality of the grating at wavelengths near 600 A. Applications of the spectrometer for the study of nonsolar objects and solar regions (including the chromosphere, transition region, and corona) are considered.

Development of the RAIDS extreme ultraviolet wedge and strip detector

In the next few years the Remote Atmospheric and Ionospheric Detector System (RAIDS) package will be flown on a Tiros spacecraft. The EUV spectrometer experiment contains a position-sensitive detector based on wedge and strip anode technology. A detector design has been implemented in brazed alumina and kovar to provide a rugged bakeable housing and anode. A stack of three 80:1 microchannel plates is operated at 3500-4100 V. to achieve a gain of about 10 to the 7th. The top MCP is to be coated with MgF for increased quantum efficiency in the range of 50-115 nm. A summary of fabrication techniques and detector performance characteristics is presented.

The Berkeley extreme ultraviolet calibration facility

The vacuum calibration facilities of the Space Sciences Laboratory, University of California at Berkeley are designed for the calibration and testing of EUV and FUV spaceborne instrumentation (spectral range 44-2500 A). The facility includes one large cylindrical vacuum chamber (3 x 5 m) containing two EUV collimators, and it is equipped with a 4-axis manipulator of angular-control resolution 1 arcsec for payloads weighing up to 500 kg. In addition, two smaller cylindrical chambers, each 0.9 x 1.2 m, are available for vacuum and thermal testing of UV detectors, filters, and space electronics hardware. All three chambers open into class-10,000 clean rooms, and all calibrations are referred to NBS secondary standards.

Transient coronal extreme ultraviolet emission before and during the impulsive phase of a solar flare

Transient coronal EUV emission, recorded in an emission line of Fe XI at 180.4 A, has been observed prior to and during the initial stages of a solar flare. This emission provides direct evidence of the interactions between the lower corona and the chromosphere during flare initiation. The first EUV enhancement was correlated with activation and eruption of a filament, extended over a distance of about 120,000 km, and had an emission maximum at the site of filament disruption. A moving source of EUV emission also appeared along the trajectory of the erupting filament as it accelerated through the low corona. The mass of this source is estimated to be greater than that of the initial filament or surrounding corona, implying an additional mass ejection from the chromosphere. EUV emission during the impulsive phase of the flare consisted of transient sources along the photospheric magnetic neutral line, with intervening regions of lesser intensity that are interpreted as transient coronal loops below the erupting filament.

Spectral observations of the extreme ultraviolet astronomical background radiation

Observations in the FUV and soft X-ray bands suggest that the ISM contains several components of high-temperature gas (100,000-1 million K). If large volumes of local interstellar space are filled with this hot plasma, emission lines will be produced in the EUV. Diffuse EUV radiation, however, has only been detected with photometric instruments; no spectral measurements exist below 520 A. A unique grazing-incidence spectrometer to study the diffuse emission between 80 and 650 A with resolution 10-30 A was successfully flown on a sounding rocket in April 1986, and a preliminary analysis reveals several features. In addition to the expected interplanetary He I 584 A emission and the geocoronal He II 304 A emission, other features appear which may orginate in the hot ionized interstellar gas.

Small blaze angle gratings with various surface treatments for use in the extreme ultraviolet

Three replica gratings made from a single master, including two epoxy-overcoated gratings with different thicknesses of gold and one grating replicated directly in gold, were studied by measuring and comparing the performances of the gratings in EUV light at grazing incidence angles. The results show that, in situations which require a very low grazing angle, high-quality, mechanically ruled straight groove gratings provide good efficiency and uniform blaze independent of coating thickness up to 1000 A. However, the technique of direct replication in the surface material seems to result in substantially more light scattering and does not seem to have other obvious advantages.

Spectrometer system for diffuse extreme ultraviolet radiation

A unique grazing incidence spectrometer system has been designed to study diffuse line emission between 80 and 650 A with 10-30 A resolution. The minimum detectable emission line strength during a 5-min observation ranges from 100-2000 ph/sq cm sec str. The instrument uses mechanically ruled reflection gratings placed in front of a linear array of mirrors. These mirrors focus the spectral image on microchannel plate detectors located behind thin filters. The field of view is 40 min of arc by 15 deg, and there is no spatial imaging. This instrument has been fabricated, calibrated, and successfully flown on a sounding rocket to observe the astronomical background radiation.

Medium resolution studies of extreme ultraviolet emission from N2 by electron impact - The effect of predissociation on the emission cross section of the b 1Pi(u) state

The electron impact induced fluorescence spectrum of N2 is measured in the 102-134 nm range at a 0.05 nm spectral resolution. The spectral measurements provide the emission cross sections of the transitions of the b 1Pi(u)-X 1Sigma(+)g Birge-Hopfield I-band system. The structure and vibrational population distribution of this system are strongly affected by a configuration interaction of the valence b 1Pi(u) and Rydberg c 1Pi(u) and o 1Pi(u) states. The excitation function (0-400 eV) for the b-X (1,2) transition is measured and a modified Born approximation analytic model is applied to calculate the oscillator strength for the b 1Pi(u)-X band system. With the exception of the v-prime = 1 level, vibrational levels of the b 1Pi(u) state predissociate with a branching ratio of between 0.95 and 1.00. Predissociation of the b 1Pi(u) state contributes approximately six percent of the total dissociation cross section of N2 by electron impact at 100 eV.

Contamination control program for the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer instruments

A contamination-control program has been instituted for the optical components of the EUV Explorer satellite, whose 80-900 A range performance is easily degraded by particulate and molecular contamination. Cleanliness requirements have been formulated for the design, fabrication, and test phases of these instruments; in addition, contamination-control steps have been taken which prominently include the isolation of sensitive components in a sealed optics cavity. Prelaunch monitoring systems encompass the use of quartz crystal microbalances, particle witness plates, direct flight hardware sampling, and optical witness sampling of EUV scattering and reflectivity.

Extreme ultraviolet quantum detection efficiency of rubidium bromide opaque photocathodes

Measurements are presented of the quantum detection efficiency (QDE) of three samples of RbBr photocathode layers over the 44-150-A wavelength range. The QDE of RbBr-coated microchannel plate (MCP) was measured using a back-to-back Z-stack MCP configuration in a detector with a wedge and strip position-sensitive anode, of the type described by Siegmund et al. (1984). To assess the stability of RbBr layer, the RbBr photocathode was exposed to air at about 30 percent humidity for 20 hr. It was found that the QDE values for the aged cathode were within the QDE measurement errors of the original values. A simple QDE model was developed, and it was found that its predictions are in accord with the QDE measurements.

Predicted extreme-ultraviolet and X-ray spectrum of a microflare-heated corona

Sturrock et al. (1990) have proposed that a distribution of microflares produces the solar coronal and transition-region emission. This paper presents computed EUV and X-ray emission spectra from that distribution, including the effects of time-dependent ionization. The overall agreement of the predicted spectrum with observations is fairly good, although the predicted emission from the upper transition region is high by a factor of 2. Time-dependent ionization greatly enhances the He II 304-A line, improving the agreement with observation compared with ionization equilibrium models. The predicted effects on temperature-sensitive line ratios of other ions cannot yet be tested against observations due to uncertainties in instrumental calibration and atomic rates.

Study of electron impact excitation of argon in the extreme ultraviolet - Emission cross section of resonance lines of Ar I, Ar II

In a crossed-beam experiment under optically thin conditions the EUV spectrum of argon produced by electron impact excitation is studied. The cross sections of the resonance lines of Ar I and II are measured. The resonance lines of Ar I at 104.8 nm and 106.7 nm, and of Ar II at 91.96 nm and 93.21 nm are the most prominent features of the EUV spectrum between 40 and 110 nm. The relative-flow technique is used to measure the absolute cross sections of these lines at 200 eV. The measurements are compared with previous estimates. The measured emission cross section values at 200 eV for the Ar I lines at 104.8 nm and 106.7 nm, when compared to the electron energy loss estimates of the direct excitation cross sections, establish that cascading is larger for the Ar I resonance lines than previous emission experiments have indicated. In addition, all the emission cross sections for the Ar I and II Rydberg series in the EUV are measured at 0.5 nm resolution. The FUV spectrum is also surveyed and found to consist of Ar II multiplets from simultaneous ionization-excitation.

Extreme ultraviolet performance of a multilayer coated high density toroidal grating

The performance of a multilayer coated diffraction grating has been evaluated at EUV wavelengths both in terms of absolute efficiency and spectral resolution. The application of ten-layer Ir/Si multilayer coating to a 3600-lines/mm blazed toroidal replica grating produced a factor of 9 enhancement in peak efficiency near the design wavelength of about 30 nm in first order, without degrading its excellent quasistigmatic spectral resolution. The measured EUV efficiency peaked at 3.3 percent and was improved over the full spectral range between 25 and 35 nm compared with the premultilayer replica which had a standard gold coating. In addition, the grating's spectral resolution of greater than 5000 was maintained.

Multi-Spectral Solar Telescope Array. IV - The soft X-ray and extreme ultraviolet filters

NASA's Multi-Spectral Solar Telescope Array uses various combinations of thin foil filters composed of Al, C, Te, Be, Mo, Rh, and phthalocyanine to achieve the requisite radiation-rejection characteristics. Such rejection is demanded by the presence of strong EUV radiation at longer wavelengths where the specular reflectivity of multilayer mirrors can cause 'contamination' of the image in the narrow band defined by the Bragg condition.

Polarimetry of extreme ultraviolet lines in solar astronomy

Ways are suggested in which recent advancements in the fabrication of ultrasmooth, low scatter flow-polished mirror substrates and high-quality multilayer and interference film coatings can be used to create novel optical instruments for observing linear-polarization effects in the outer solar atmosphere. Attention is given to the observational parameters of all-reflective FUV/EUV imaging polarimeters; such a coronagraph/polarimeter, operating at Ly-alpha, could yield the first measurements of coronal vector magnetic fields.

Imaging polarimeters for solar extreme ultraviolet astronomy

Accounts are given of EUV/FUV polarimetric instrument concepts for solar research which observe linear polarization in the spectral lines which originate in the outer solar atmosphere. The coronagraph/polarimeter instruments discussed employ all-reflective optical systems using ultrasmooth, low-scatter normal incidence mirrors and reflective polarization analyzers. The reflecting polarization analyzers operate at the Brewster angle.
