Mediated Inner‐Sphere Electron Transfer Induces Homogeneous Reduction of CO 2 via Through‐Space Electronic Conjugation**

Abstract The electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 is an appealing method for converting renewable energy sources into value‐added chemical feedstocks. We report a co‐electrocatalytic system for the reduction of CO 2 to CO comprised of a molecular Cr complex and dibenzothiophene‐5,5‐dioxide (DBTD) as a redox mediator, which achieves high activity (TOF=1.51–2.84×10 5 s −1 ) and quantitative selectivity. Under aprotic or protic conditions, DBTD produces a co‐electrocatalytic response with 1 by coordinating trans to the site of CO 2 binding and mediating electron transfer from the electrode with quantitative efficiency for CO. This assembly is reliant on through‐space electronic conjugation between the π frameworks of DBTD and the bpy fragment of the catalyst ligand, with contributions from dispersive interactions and weak sulfone coordination.

Synthesis, Crystal and Electronic Structure of Layered AM Sb Compounds ( A = Rb, Cs; M = Zn, Cd): Synthesis, Crystal and Electronic Structure of Layered AM Sb Compounds ( A = Rb, Cs; M = Zn, Cd)

Synthesis, crystal structure, thermal stability, and electronic band structure of four new metal antimonides AMSb (A = Rb, Cs; M = Zn, Cd) are reported. CsZnSb and RbZnSb crystallize in the hexagonal ZrBeSi structure type, in a P6 3 /mmc space group (no. 194, Z = 2) and unit cell dimensions of a = 4.5588(2)/4.5466(4) Å and c = 11.9246(6)/11.0999(10) Å. CsCdSb and RbCdSb crystallize in the tetragonal PbFCl structure type in a P4/nmm space group (no. 129; Z = 2) and unit cell parameters of a = 4.8884(5)/4.8227(3) Å and c = 8.8897(9)/8.5492(7) Å. All four compounds are air- and water-sensitive and are shown through DSC measurements to decompose between 975 K and 1060 K. Analysis of the calculated electronic band structure shows that the Zn-containing antimonides are topologically trivial narrow bandgap semiconductors, whereas Cd-containing compounds exhibit a band inversion along Γ-Z direction.

Artificial Intelligence for the Electron Ion Collider (AI4EIC)

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a state-of-the-art facility for studying the strong force, is expected to begin commissioning its first experiments in 2028. This is an opportune time for artificial intelligence (AI) to be included from the start at this facility and in all phases that lead up to the experiments. The second annual workshop organized by the AI4EIC working group, which recently took place, centered on exploring all current and prospective application areas of AI for the EIC. This workshop is not only beneficial for the EIC, but also provides valuable insights for the newly established ePIC collaboration at EIC. This paper summarizes the different activities and R&D projects covered across the sessions of the workshop and provides an overview of the goals, approaches and strategies regarding AI/ML in the EIC community, as well as cutting-edge techniques currently studied in other experiments.

GFCCLib: Scalable and efficient coupled-cluster Green's function library for accurately tackling many-body electronic structure problems

Coupled-cluster Green’s function (GFCC) calculation has drawn much attention in the recent years for targeting the molecular and material electronic structure problems from a many-body perspective in a systematically improvable way. However, GFCC calculations on scientific computing clusters usually suffer from expensive higher di- mensional tensor contractions in the complex space, expensive inter-process communi- cation, and severe load imbalance, which limits it’s routine use for tackling electronic structure problems. Here we present a numerical library prototype that is specifically designed for large-scale GFCC calculations. The design of the library is focused on a systematically optimal computing strategy to improve its scalability and efficiency. The performance of the library is demonstrated by the relevant profiling analysis of running GFCC calculations on remote giant computing clusters. The capability of the library is highlighted by computing a wide near valence band of a fullerene C60 molecule for the first time at the GFCCSD level that shows excellent agreement with the experimental spectrum.

Theoretical study of the electronic, thermodynamic, and thermo-conductive properties of y-LiAlO2 with 6Li isotope substitutions for tritium production

Lithium aluminate has attracted researchers’ interests due to its wide applications. The structural, electronic, optical, lattice phonon thermodynamic, and thermo-conductive properties of ?-LiAlO2 with 6Li-isotope substitution are investigated by density functional theory and lattice phonon dynamics. The calculated results show that ?-LiAlO2 possesses a wide band-gap of 4.63 eV. The valence band is mainly formed by p orbitals of Li, O, and Al. The calculated lattice thermal conductivity of ?-LiAlO2 is found to be in good agreement over a wide range of temperatures with the available experimental data. The calculated dielectric matrix shows anisotropic behavior along z and x (or y) axes. Due to the wide band-gap, the optical conductivity of ?-LiAlO2 is mainly contributed from the electron hopping between valence-conduction bands. Substitution of 7Li with 6Li isotope in ?-LiAlO2 leads to observable differences in the lattice phonon frequencies at higher frequencies (>8THz) and to slight changes in corresponding thermal conductivity and the infrared and Raman spectra which are in good agreement with the measured data. The relevance of these properties for tritium production through 6Li absorbing neutron in nuclear reactors is discussed.

Net Electronic Charge as an Effective Electronic Descriptor for Oxygen Release and Transport Properties of SrFeO 3 -based Oxygen Sorbents

Perovskite oxides, as oxygen sorbents, exhibit excellent potential in thermochemical redox applications such as chemical looping air separation (CLAS), resulting from their excellent redox properties and high tunability. The structural and compositional flexibility of perovskites, while making these mixed oxides highly versatile, also poses challenges for their design and optimization. Moreover, the elevated operating temperature and dynamic oxygen partial pressure swings during redox processes add additional complications for oxygen sorbent design. From a fundamental standpoint, finding simple yet effective descriptors for the effect of cation substitutions on oxygen sorbents’ redox and oxygen transport properties are of significant importance for rational optimization of perovskite-based oxygen sorbents. In the present study, a series of A/B-site-doped SrFeO 3-δ perovskites are investigated using density functional theory (DFT) + U simulations. From these simulations, an effective electronic structural descriptor, the net electronic charge (Δe) of oxygen anions, is extracted based on its excellent correlations with vacancy formation energy, experimentally derived oxygen capacity, and oxygen vacancy migration barrier. Overall, these findings provide an effective tool to correlate the oxygen sorbents’ redox performances with a simple yet physically meaningful descriptor for rational design and optimization of perovskites in the context of CLAS.

Potential Skyrmion Host Fe(IO3)3: Connecting Stereoactive Lone-Pair Electron Effects to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction

Magnetic skyrmions, which are topologically distinct magnetic spin textures, are gaining increased attention for their unique physical properties and potential applications in spintronic devices. Here we present a design strategy for skyrmion host candidates based on combinations of magnetic spin, asymmetric building units having stereoactive lone-pair electrons, and polar lattice symmetry. To demonstrate the viability of the proposed rational design principles, we successfully synthesized a Fe(IO 3 ) 3 polycrystalline sample and single crystals by using a new simplified low-temperature pathway, which is experimentally feasible for extending materials growth of transition metal iodates. Single crystal X-ray and powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements demonstrated that Fe(IO 3 ) 3 crystallizes in the polar chiral hexagonal lattice with space group P63. The combined structural features of the macroscopic electric polarization along the c-axis stemming from the coalignment of the stereoactive lone-pairs of the IO 3 – trigonal pyramid and the magnetic Fe 3+ cation residing on the 3-fold rotation axis were selected to promote asymmetric exchange coupling. We find evidence of a predicted skyrmion phase at 14 K ≤ T ≤ 16 K and 2.5 T ≤ μ 0 H ≤ 3.2 T driven by a Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya (DM) interaction, a conclusion supported by the appreciable DM exchange and the zero-field spiral antiferromagnetic ground state of Fe(IO 3 ) 3 deduced from neutron diffraction experiments. The associated magnetic modulation wavelength of the putative skyrmions is expected to be short ~18 nm, comparable to the period of the DM-driven incommensurate order. This work links stereoactive lone-pair electron effects to enhanced DM interaction, demonstrating a new approach for chemical guidelines in the search for skyrmionic states of matter.
