Development of Quantum Computing Interconnect Based on Aerosol Jet Printing and Electrochemical Deposition of Rhenium

The electrodeposition of rhenium on to a metal seed layer on flexible substrates is presented as a means to creating superconducting flexible cable connectors in an enabling plug-and-play approach for quantum computing. Cryogenic quantum electronics are currently connected using masses of stainless-steel coaxial cables that are bulky, rigid - both in form and design - and lead to significant joule heating, thermal noise, and cross talk. Here, we present an unprecedented approach to integrate an aerosol jet printed (AJP) metal seed layer with rhenium electrodeposition on a flexible substrate in the advancement of superconducting interconnect technologies. Silver and gold were printed using the ‘Nanojet’ aerosol jet printer on Kapton films. Adhesion of gold was found to be far superior to that of silver and adhesion on roughened Kapton surpassed that of its smooth counterpart. Electrodeposition of rhenium was successful on both silver and gold and an amorphous Re film was confirmed by XRD. Results for both materials are presented however due to the poor adhesion of silver to Kapton it was ruled out as a viable candidate. Composite materials were characterized by profilometry, EDS, XRD and FIBSEM. Electrical measurements of the composite at ambient temperature showed a critical temperature (T c ), where the resistance drops to 0, of 5.8 K, well above 4.2 K, the temperature of liquid helium. Stress-strain tests of the Ag-Re and Au-Re composites on roughened and smooth Kapton were completed. Cyclic flexure testing (200 cycles) to 1.25% strain showed smooth Kapton samples reach a stress of ~16 MPa, while Kapton roughened with sandpaper, reaches ~20MPa of stress for the same 1.25% strain.

Interactions of a Microdischarge with a Premixed Flame (Final Technical Report)

In this project we introduced an experimental platform that facilitates the study of the two-way interaction of plasma and flame, and the exploration of the impact of the spatial location of the discharge on its kinetics, in a controlled environment. The experimental platform is a mesoscale CH4/air premixed flame burner that also acts as a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) operated by nanosecond pulsed voltage. A unique feature of this setup is that the DBD utilizes transparent electrodes, made of Indium Tin Oxide (ITO), to unlock optical access along the line-of-sight parallel to the dominant electric field. This platform is suitable to study both the forward problem (impact of plasma-on-flame), which manifests itself as a modified flame speed as well as flame wrinkling; and the backward problem (impact of flame-on-plasma), which includes plasma regime transitions, between microdischarges and uniform modes, driven by the flame passage. Prior work at MIT has focused on electrical measurements and direct imaging studies of the plasma-flame interaction through the ITO electrode. This project, which was awarded experimental runtime at the Low-temperature Plasma Research Facility (PRF) at Sandia National Laboratories, quantifies the flame-plasma interaction through temporally resolved measurement of key radicals (oxygen atom, O) produced by the nanosecond repetitively pused discharge (NRPD) in an individual microdischarge, using two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence (TALIF).

Transmission Electron Microscopy Study on the Effect of Thermal and Electrical Stimuli on Ge2Te3 Based Memristor Devices

Memristor devices fabricated using the chalcogenide Ge 2 Te 3 phase change thin films in a metal-insulator-metal structure are characterized using thermal and electrical stimuli in this study. Once the thermal and electrical stimuli are applied, cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy (XEDS) analyses are performed to determine structural and compositional changes in the devices. Electrical measurements on these devices showed a need for increasing compliance current between cycles to initiate switching from low resistance state (LRS) to high resistance state (HRS). The measured resistance in HRS also exhibited a steady decrease with increase in the compliance current. High resolution TEM studies on devices in HRS showed the presence of residual crystalline phase at the top-electrode/dielectric interface, which may explain the observed dependence on compliance current. XEDS study revealed diffusion related processes at dielectric-electrode interface characterized, by the separation of Ge 2 Te 3 into Ge- and Te- enriched interfacial layers. This was also accompanied by spikes in O level at these regions. Furthermore, in-situ heating experiments on as-grown thin films revealed a deleterious effect of Ti adhesive layer, wherein the in-diffusion of Ti leads to further degradation of the dielectric layer. This experimental physics-based study shows that the large HRS/LRS ratio below the current compliance limit of 1 mA and the ability to control the HRS and LRS by varying the compliance current are attractive for memristor and neuromorphic computing applications.

Degradation Dynamics of Perovskite Solar Cells Under Fixed Reverse Current Injection

Previous studies of reverse-bias stability in perovskite solar cells have focused primarily on voltage controlled reverse-bias tests. Here we instead present an investigation of perovskite solar cell degradation under well-defined, constant reverse-current stress. We show that the choice of hole-transport layer dictates the dominant degradation pathway: cells using thick poly(triphenylamine) (PTAA) layers with better indium-doped tin oxide (ITO) coverage can tolerate high reverse bias but quickly undergo catastrophic breakdown under fixed reverse current near their one-sun maximum power-point. In contrast, cells modified with the phosphonic-acid interface layer MeO-2PACz, with poorer ITO coverage compared to PTAA, exhibit soft, gradual, and largely recoverable degradation, regardless of the shading conditions. For MeO-2PACz devices, degradation increases with both current magnitude and duration. Importantly, when normalized by injected charge (current times duration), lower currents applied over longer times cause more severe degradation than higher currents over shorter periods. Combining electrical measurements with spatially resolved photoluminescence imaging, we argue against shunt formation and instead support an ion- and charge-mediated interfacial electrochemical degradation mode.

Benchtop-Scale High Temperature Molten Salt Electrochemical Reactors: Experimental Setup and Considerations

Molten salt electrochemical reduction (MSER) is the dominant production method for aluminum and titanium, and emerging technologies for producing other commodity metals with these highly electrified techniques have demonstrated promising results. However, the scale up of MSER of materials such as iron and silicon are limited by the challenging issues of materials compatibility and impurity control. This work describes an experimental MSER setup using both chloride and carbonate salts. This setup is designed for operations outside of a glovebox, which is practical from an industrial perspective, but creates unique challenges. This work serves as a practical guide to discuss some key operational difficulties such as temperature control, air and humidity, material compatibility, developing strong electrical measurements and techniques, and safety.
